At a rally in DC last week, Illinois Republican Rep. Mark Kirk joined several other congressmen in supporting Israel’s actions in Gaza. According to JTA, Kirk said, “To misquote Shakespeare, something is rotten in Gaza and now it’s time to take out the trash.” Brandon Friedman of Vote Vets responds:
People who throw around such cavalier remarks have never watched a civilian bleed to death on a battlefield after being cut down in the crossfire. To people like Congressman Kirk, combat doesn’t involve real people in real situations. Just numbers, ideologies, terrorists, and “trash.” It’s the same reckless attitude that birthed George W. Bush’s “bring’em on” statement and many others like it.
Not to worry, Mark. The trash is scheduled to be taken out early next week.

Jeezus… do they have some sort of machine that just spits them out like blobs of frozen custard?
January 12th, 2009 at 1:31 pmWhy is it that, when push comes to shove, Republican politicians all start talking like high school football players?
January 12th, 2009 at 1:32 pmIt’s an appalling thing to say, no doubt.
But, because I am a Progressive who believes in telling the truth, let me correct VoteVets on one important point.
Kirk is a Naval Reserve intelligence officer who has served on active duty in Afghanistan and Iraq.
So as appalling as his judgment and attitude is, VoteVets is wrong to say that “to people like Congressman Kirk, combat doesn’t involve real people in real situations.”
Fair is fair.
January 12th, 2009 at 1:33 pmI agree. Get in this bag, white boy.
January 12th, 2009 at 1:35 pmOMG! I don’t think bombing children has anything to do with taking out trash – ROT IN HELL MARK KIRK! ROT IN HELL GEORGE BUSH!
January 12th, 2009 at 1:35 pmHmmm. Mr. Kirk, how about we start with YOUR children – call them “trash” and take them out…?
January 12th, 2009 at 1:36 pmSo taking the HAMLET reference to its logical conclusion, Rep. Kirk plans to go mad (or maybe fake it), accidentally kill someone hiding in a closet (Larry Craig?), and then poison the Palestinian leaders and his mother and then hand Gaza over in his will to the Norwegians?
Weird…
January 12th, 2009 at 1:37 pm… or is it possible that Rep. Kirk neither understood nor thought his HAMLET reference through?
I hope that’s it.
Although, we might consider involving the Norwegians, there might be something in that.
January 12th, 2009 at 1:40 pmI don’t know but hearing a US Military officer refer to people as trash. Seems to me a certain Prince just caught some serious flack just the other day for a comment that was less inflammatory. Just as stupid though. Officer and a gentleman, member of Congress. Obviously our standards are slipping.
January 12th, 2009 at 1:40 pmGood job, Mr. Kirk. We now have you targeted for 2010. It worked with Goode, Musgrove and others. You’re next.
January 12th, 2009 at 1:40 pmTypical callous attitude towards humanity from these freaks. The spirit of the madman Hitler lives on in scum like Kirk.
January 12th, 2009 at 1:41 pmThose comments are just not necessary. So the civilians that are sharing the brunt of this offensive are “trash”???
This type of rhetoric just makes my blood boil. He should try for a second to put himself in the shoes of(civilians) the people that are suffering immensely.

So you’re saying he was referring explicitly to the civilian population of Gaza, rather than ignoring them? I wouldn’t put it past him.

January 12th, 2009 at 1:49 pmThe fact that this guy is a military officer makes it even worse. He’s not your typical cowardly republican chicken hawk, nor is he a GI. Not that that would make a difference, BUT, he’s an officer with that attitude. Makes we wonder how badly infiltrated our military is with right wing bible thumping republicans who see the war on terror as a religious crusade.
January 12th, 2009 at 1:53 pmMy mistake, it’s not a war on terror. It’s the Neoconservative/Zionist war on anyone not jewish or christian.
January 12th, 2009 at 1:56 pmWe’ve been taking out the Republican trash for over two years now; guess that some is still stuck in the House and the Senate. We’ll be getting it out in 2010. Not to worry, Mr. Kirk, you will soon be rotting in the compost bin of history.
January 12th, 2009 at 2:08 pmRacist zionist freak looks like a shorter version of the Idiot on that picture. Another zionist idiot wannabe!
January 12th, 2009 at 2:13 pmNice. Bombing children and unarmed civilians is “taking out the trash”.
Real f$@king nice.
“Moral high ground” and “comapssionate conservatism” in action for you.
January 12th, 2009 at 2:17 pmLooks like we have more trash to take out in 2010.
January 12th, 2009 at 2:28 pmHate speech.
January 12th, 2009 at 2:30 pmIt sickening to read about such repulsive remarks regarding civilian victims in Gaza…specially when it is coming from a member of US House of representatives.
May I say that his remarks are also racist.
Gazans to him are children of a lesser God,they have a darker skin than his,so their death means nothing to him.
Very shameful remarks..
Jesus was killed by Europeans from Rome,Jesus had a darker skin too, just like the Palestinians of today who lived there thousands of years on the same land.
Mark Kirk needs to start reading some history books, may be that will help him curb some of his racism, and also might be teaching him something about the Middle East which might help him in his job,and he showed that he know nothing about.
The Middle East is not all about Israel…there are other peoples who lived there for thousands of years…like the people of Palestinian Gazans whom M.Kirk called ‘trash’,but these peoples are there to stay ,forever, and we need to live with this fact whether Mark Kirk likes it or not.
January 12th, 2009 at 2:31 pmThis is the guy the repugs would like to run in the special election, should one be held, to fill Obama’s Senate seat.
January 12th, 2009 at 2:34 pmHe is a conceited jerk, a partisan ideologue.
Here’s a song by Leonard Cohen called “Everybody Knows” as found at:
January 12th, 2009 at 2:37 pmyoutube.com/watch?v=h27HRNm_r4U
It fits Kirk and the rest of his bind ilk to a “T!”
Boy, that comment is sure to advance USA – Arab relationships.
Basically, my belief is that the Arab countries use the Palestinians. But even at that, comments like his can easily be used as focal points to start fires (like a magnifying glass on dry leaves).
January 12th, 2009 at 2:41 pmHe watches alot of war movies while eating popcorn, Rambo, John Wayne etc. and knows what it takes to be a soldier on the battle field.
Chickhawk….bawk, bawk, bawk.
January 12th, 2009 at 2:44 pmI doubt Mark Kirk considers Palestinians to be “people.”
January 12th, 2009 at 2:46 pmWow, that is one ugly human being. Calling him human is even a stretch.

To be fair, there are probably a few albinos who have darker skin than Rep. Kirk’s.
January 12th, 2009 at 2:56 pmKirk, just like his boss, el Boosh, has ‘little man’ written all over him…

Very. Extremely. A lot.
January 12th, 2009 at 3:19 pmNo, Captain Kirk, there is something rotten in Congress and it is YOU. 2010 is just around the corner and you are now in the cross-hairs. No human being should be called trash, ever. It is wrong. Just like Israel’s heavy-handed tactics against the Palestinians.
There was a cardinal recently who referred to the Palestinian state as a concentration camp and got a lot of flak for it but would not retract his statement because he knew in his heart that he is right. 13 Israeli deaths, 10 of them soldiers after the conflict started, vs over 950 Palestinian deaths, with half of them civilian? It’s like using cluster bombs against people who are throwing stones. What do they expect when they treat these people worse than dogs? That they are just going to roll over and let their rights to live decently be flushed down the shitter? This ideology must end.
January 12th, 2009 at 3:21 pmIs Bush’s head really that big, or has the picture been “photo shopped”?
January 12th, 2009 at 3:34 pmIf You are not WHITE, WEALTHY and CHRISTIAN you are hated by the REICH WING-NUTS……..especially guys like this “SHRUB” wanna be.
January 12th, 2009 at 3:40 pmSort of like that “give me liberty or give me death” shit we are supposed to indoctrinate american kids with in class…
January 12th, 2009 at 4:57 pmIt was an extremely poor choice of words for a rare Republican with some dignity.
January 12th, 2009 at 5:08 pmUnlike Bush, he doesn’t have a habit of this sort of thing.
I backed Seals in his two runs against Kirk, but Kirk is far better than 95% of the people in the GOP.
Rep. Kirk knows exactly what he’s saying. He said Obama should be shot on site, yes the soon to become President of the United States. It’s an old comment Kirk learned as it was said about Blacks in the 50’s and 60’s. Kirk has some criminals friends such as Delay, Nay and Rezko. For Kirk’s strong support of the War Crimes committed by Israel it’s all about the money to him. Kirk has been making big kick backs and his pockets have been lined for his out spoken support of terrorism done to Palestine and his hate for minorities. Well be interesting to see how he treats the new African American President. No telling what Kirk might do if he’s paid enough money by his racist friends.
January 12th, 2009 at 5:10 pmWar crimes?
January 12th, 2009 at 5:47 pmLobbing shells into Israel is an act of kindness?
Kirk made a stupid comment, but let’s not forget how this thing started.
Nations have a right of self-defense.

Someone else starting it does not give you free license to do just anything you want; there are still allowable limits. “Starting it” is only one category of war crimes.
January 12th, 2009 at 6:18 pmWhy Mark is talking about himself again!
January 12th, 2009 at 8:03 pmWow. Very progressive of him to be looking forward to seeing the end of the Bush mis-adminstration. Kudos.
Oh, wait, did I misunderstand?
January 12th, 2009 at 8:19 pmMark Kirk is a well known degenerate Republican.
January 12th, 2009 at 8:20 pmSkeeter1 Says:
Kirk made a stupid comment, but let’s not forget how this thing started.
Sure.
Let’s not forget all the Palestinian people living in camps for all of their lives because the Israelis went and settled in their lands after the Six Day War.
Let’s not forget the hundreds of “accidental” killings by the IDF which have been investigated by the IDF and where IDF judges have decided that, surprise surprise, the IDF soldiers did nothing wrong.
Lobbing rockets into Israel is wrong. Bombing whole blocks to take out one or two militants is more wrong.
January 12th, 2009 at 8:46 pmThe trash in my home is the stuff that has been consumed and is no longer necessary as it will clutter, disease or harm my family if it remains. The same can be said of Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, etc. It is a fine analogy and one with which I agree. People who wish to kill the civilian population of any country appear to me to be trash. No one here has had any problem referring to Mr. Bush in such a way so why are your sensibilities so offended when referring to terrorist organizations? Are you pro terrorist? Maybe you believe baby killers are really freedom fighters? That’s one of my favorites. Especially since you are all so fond of Vietnam vets here. Hypocrites!
January 13th, 2009 at 8:55 amWoodguy, that is a great post. Republic of stupidity, a descriptive perchance? This guy could whip your A$$ any day of the week. Be careful in judging people by how they look, you openminded, tolerant, lefty you.
January 13th, 2009 at 9:00 amInteresting how a troll like Drew decries deliberately targeting civilians yet supports deliberately targeting civilians.
Only in blithering idiot neocon Bizarroworld can such hypocrisy be spouted.
Of course if it REALLY feels that knuckle-dragger Kirk is right about his statement, it-Drew-can go over and get in on the ground fighting in Gaza.
However, since that would require something other than physical cowardice, I wouldn’t expect it to actually do anything of the type.
