Rep. Mark Kirk (R-IL) on Gaza: ‘It’s time to take out the trash.’
At a rally in DC last week, Illinois Republican Rep. Mark Kirk joined several other congressmen in supporting Israel’s actions in Gaza. According to JTA, Kirk said, “To misquote Shakespeare, something is rotten in Gaza and now it’s time to take out the trash.” Brandon Friedman of Vote Vets responds:
People who throw around such cavalier remarks have never watched a civilian bleed to death on a battlefield after being cut down in the crossfire. To people like Congressman Kirk, combat doesn’t involve real people in real situations. Just numbers, ideologies, terrorists, and “trash.” It’s the same reckless attitude that birthed George W. Bush’s “bring’em on” statement and many others like it.

But, because I am a Progressive who believes in telling the truth, let me correct VoteVets on one important point.
Kirk is a Naval Reserve intelligence officer who has served on active duty in Afghanistan and Iraq.
So as appalling as his judgment and attitude is, VoteVets is wrong to say that “to people like Congressman Kirk, combat doesn’t involve real people in real situations.”

There was a cardinal recently who referred to the Palestinian state as a concentration camp and got a lot of flak for it but would not retract his statement because he knew in his heart that he is right. 13 Israeli deaths, 10 of them soldiers after the conflict started, vs over 950 Palestinian deaths, with half of them civilian? It’s like using cluster bombs against people who are throwing stones. What do they expect when they treat these people worse than dogs?
