Will the American public get all ‘emotional’ over Bush’s farewell address?

On Thursday night, President Bush will give a 10-15 minute prime time farewell address. However, just a few weeks ago, in a Dec. 18 interview with C-SPAN’s Steve Scully, Bush said that he might avoid a farewell address because he didn’t want the American public to go through a “real emotional goodbye” with him:

SCULLY: Will you deliver a farewell address in this office?

BUSH: Thinking about it. Thinking about it. A lot of Presidents have, and I’m giving it serious thought. I don’t want it to be — you know, kind of a real emotional goodbye. If I give it, it’s going to be trying to leave behind some lessons learned.

Watch it:

White House spokesperson Dana Perino said yesterday that Bush will “uphold the tradition of presidents using farewell addresses to look forward — by sharing his thoughts on greatest challenges facing the country, and on what it will take to meet them.” However, as recently as the C-SPAN interview, Bush didn’t seem to have any idea what he was going to say. Scully told him that there was “a great tradition of presidential warnings,” and Bush eagerly replied, “[T]hank you for giving me some ideas.”

Update Yesterday on Fox news, Sean Hannity asked Bush, "When you know you have just a few days left, do you get emotional?" Bush replied, "I don't get that emotional at this point, because I've been saying goodbye to people for a couple of weeks now. And I'm sure I'll get emotional as we get to the end."

Yeah, a real emotional goodbye…like dancing in the streets!

    Is ‘outrage’ an emotion?

  4. Hoodathunk says:

I wonder. I suppose it will be a private thing with just cameras. If he gave it in front of a crowd they might have to institute the old Japanese custom of leaving your shoes at the door.

“Sorry, ma’am but those stiletto heels are a dangerous weapon.”

“Hey buddy, drop that steel toe!”

  5. raynman says:

I wonder if TV sales will spike upward Friday from people having to buy new televisions after throwing their shoes Thursday night….

I think most of us have learned a lesson. No more dumbasses in the Oval Office.

I’ve been emotional about George Bush for at least 8 years….

A perfect opportunity to host a digital television change-over party where everyone gets to throw their shoes at the old TV set during the Idiot-boy-king’s farewell.

    Got to start making invites…

  12. Hoodathunk says:

Someone should point out to the man he is leaving behind enough lessons. Reminds me of a dog I used to have. I wonder if they will have to replace the carpet in the Oval Office?

  13. greenpagan says:

Just tune into CSPAN’s Washington Journal to hear all the brainless Bushies blubbering for their dear departing Dubya. Unbelievable cornpone-fed rubes oafs louts yokels ninnies hillbillies hollowers and bible-barfing bumpkins. True dummies. The harder they get it stuck up and broken off the better they like it.

Somehow I doubt that many people are going to tune in. Watching Bush speak is pure torture. Why put yourself though it?

  17. Marie says:

The emotion I will feel will be one of great relief that he’s gone and great hope that we begin the long slog out of the hole he dug for us.

There is an internet effort going on to simultaneously give Bush the one-finger salute all across the nation as he leaves the White House.

    Points taken.

It’s just that the “cornponers” are working people who’ve been bamboozled hoodwinked and snookered. E.g. Joe Plumber and his wife Josette the Plumper…They’ve been washing that cornpone down all their lives with snake-oil laced Kool-Aid…And hallucinating all the way…

I personally know how much the limo & caviar (on baked potato?) set have been impoverished by Bushonomics (totally irresponsible unprecedented wartime tax cuts, etc.) Some of them are even down to their last $100 million…

Can we get an annual holiday declared? Every January 15 will be “The Night of the Flying Shoes” I can see the marketing now. Maybe we can get it made into a Religious Holiday!

Agree fully that I will have very strong emotions – joy, relief, elation, etc.

But I can’t get over that Shrub is holding a line that he won’t have any sort of grief over leaving – after 8 years there.

Either he is WWWWAAAAYYY too detached. Or he is really out of touch with his feelings. Or both.

  41. Leftside Annie says:

The only emotions I feel when I watch that bastard are rage and the urge to kill.

You must have heard him say that “elitists don’t like him” like it’s just a few of us fringe types who are pissed. He’s got right wingers all over talking about all the things other presidents did that were worse than what he’s done. Setting the bar lower for the next Republican president.

  43. Hoodathunk says:

Wouldn’t that be something. Americans gathering on the streets, in stadiums and then at the end of the address, the comes alive with flying shoes.

Loafers would be appropriate with the odd slipper thrown in. Maybe a jackboot or two?

  44. Hoodathunk says:

oops…the ‘night sky’ comes alive. Got lost in the image for a moment there.

  47. DRxJ says:

Oh. There will tears alright. Tears of sorrow for having allowed this particular a-hole to lead our country into a war that had nothing to do with 9/11, for abusing our rights, for supporting torture, a recession, apathy toward the poor,…I could go on and on.
The real tears shed will be for those poor souls who lost their lives on a terrifying day in September, all because a leader and it’s administration failed to pay attention.
The real tears shed will be for the families of our brave men and women, for some 4000 will never come home.
The real tears shed will be for the countless hundreds of thousands Iraqi’s, whose lives were lost, and whose families will never be the same.
The real tears shed will be for those poor victims of Katrina, who could no longer survive because of the federal government’s slow response.

But there will be tears of joy. Of gratefulness that this so called leader and it’s lock and step administration will never govern again!
There is hope. There is change. It begins this Thursday with Dubya’s farewell address. It officially commences a week from today.
And, my hope, is it concludes with trials, justice, and persecution.
NEVER AGAIN, my friends. Never again!

  48. Shayne says:

Throwing shoes at W is all well and good as is Marie’s salute and #18. For Cheney though I’d rather send him a dead fish wrapped in paper ala The Godfather. Go sleep with them sucker.

  49. nofltwlt says:

Oh we’ll be emotional all right!

We will be jumping up and down, cheering and celebrating Bush’s departure with absolute, uncontrolled glee.

The only thing that will be better than the end of this horrible president and his horrible adminisration and his horrible appointees will be their criminal trials – I would pay to see their prosecution.

  50. The Dogfather says:

Dumbya’s farewell speech should consist of only two words: “Just kidding!”

I mean, there’s really no other explanation for the last 8 years, is there???

  61. Jackie says:

At the last Press Conference Bush gave with many empty seats and him sounding like a lunatic and someone who needs medical help it’s called a do over. Americans and the World watch President Bush not only argue with reporters but even had several convercations with himself, as he said so many stupid things one of his aides should have stopped his maddness. We saw Bush lie, change history and attack reporters on a short time. Most of this is he’s jealous of the attention given to Obama. Bush has even had Connie Rice send letters to World Leaders telling them their not invited to the inauguration. After 8 years of having people suck up to him Bush now knows he was used to and as he said don’t believe your friends are really your friends. In the Bush Family their taught to use people like Bush has done all his life now the reality of life is he’s nothing, an embarrassment, not wanted and people will remember him for the evil, criminal things he did not only stealing two elections.

  62. A Patriot Acting says:

“George Bush’s record as a student, military man, businessman and leader of the free world is one of constant failure. And the part that troubles me most is he seems content with himself.
He will leave office with the country $10 trillion in debt, fighting two wars, our international reputation in shambles, our government cloaked in secrecy and suspicion that his entire presidency has been a litany of broken laws and promises, our citizens’ faith in our own country ripped to shreds. Yet Bush goes bumbling along, grinning and spewing moronic one-liners, as though nobody understands what a colossal failure he has been.”

  67. Tired of being lied to says:

I don’t think I’ll get really emotional – more like gastrointestinal.

I once thought Bush was arrogant and unaware. Yesterday, the man looked just plain unstable.

Thank God for the 22nd Amendment.

  71. DaTruth says:

Worms have no emotions. He shows no emotions for what is happenning in Gaza, why should he be emotional about his exit from the White House? The American people just can’t wait for this national disgrace to conclude. This illegitimate unelected war criminal ruler is a pest!

He may shed a tear or two for his fellow Zionist partners in crime that helped him throughout the entire failed presidency! He’s going to miss working with them.

  72. Tallygirl says:

I think the dancing in the streets with the “Nah nah nah nah…” song will be very emotional. I’m looking forward to it.

  73. P.D. says:

Who gives a crap about what Bush Thinks? I will be opening a bottle of Champaign!

  74. NutWrench says:

That’s just Bush’s handlers managing the spin right up until the last possible second. They’d rather cancel the whole farewell address than take the chance that someone in the audience is going to tell Bush to go fark himself.

The last thing they want to see, recorded for all time, is some guy yelling “and don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out!”

  75. Zooey says:

I will shed tears of relief that I will no longer have the hatred of this scum eating away at my soul.

  76. Jackie says:

He can leave now! As for anyone sorry he’s gone count the grave sites of our Military soldiers and the gaves of millions killed in Iraq then go over to the Palestine Holocaust Massacre and ask what they think of George W. Bush leaving office.

For those who support Bush don’t worry you will still hear him speak at his Trial for War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity being held by the International Court.

  77. Johnbo says:

I think there are going to be thousands of TVs smashed by flying shoes as we get our last chance to “get emotional” with the Chimp.

  78. SP Biloxi says:

Emotional? No George. A big sigh of relief and a grin from ear to ear. This country and folks all around the country will be glad that Bush is gone for good. 7 days and counting.
