Bush Claims He Feels Uncomfortable Saying, ‘I Know What God Was Thinking’

Yesterday on Fox News, host Sean Hannity asked President Bush whether it was the “destiny” of certain people to become president. Bush responded by saying that he wasn’t sure, noting that he was uncomfortable presuming to know what God was thinking:

BUSH: I think — first of all, I think that those who say — you know, I am very reluctant to say, of all the people in the world, I have been picked out by the Almighty. And the reason I’m reluctant to say that is, one, I don’t know. Secondly, far be it for me to put myself in the Almighty’s shoes or position. [...]

Some — some believe that. I have real trouble, as I repeat, I have real trouble, you know, saying, Well, I know what God was thinking, because I don’t.

Watch it:

But the past — when trying to convince the American public that he is right — Bush has had no problem pretending that he knows what the Almighty believes. Some examples:

I feel like God wants me to run for President. I can’t explain it, but I sense my country is going to need me. Something is going to happen… I know it won’t be easy on me or my family, but God wants me to do it.” [2000]

We are in a conflict between good and evil. And America will call evil by its name.” [6/1/02]

“[T]he former Palestinian foreign minister Nabil Shaath says Mr Bush told him and Mahmoud Abbas, former prime minister and now Palestinian President: ‘I’m driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, “George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan.” And I did, and then God would tell me, “George go and end the tyranny in Iraq,” and I did.’” [6/03]

“I don’t see how you can be president at least from my perspective, how you can be president, without a relationship with the Lord.” [1/11/05]

“This struggle is waged with the technology of the 21st century, but at its core it is the ancient battle between good and evil. … No one who prays to the God of Abraham could strap a suicide vest to an innocent child, or blow up guiltless guests at a Passover Seder, or fly planes into office buildings filled with unsuspecting workers.” [5/16/08]

Transcript:

HANNITY: And I was thinking about this very elite club that you’ve been a part of. And do you think there’s a certain destiny? Because I know you’re a man of deep faith. Is it a destiny —

BUSH: Yes.

HANNITY: — or can you aspire to be president?

BUSH: I think — first of all, I think that those who say — you know, I am very reluctant to say, of all the people in the world, I have been picked out by the Almighty. And the reason I’m reluctant to say that is, one, I don’t know. Secondly, far be it for me to put myself in the Almighty’s shoes or position.

I mean, that — I have received a lot of comfort as a result of my faith, but never have I felt like I was any better than anybody else as a result of my faith, or I was, you know, the person as a result of my faith.

Some — some believe that. I have real trouble, as I repeat, I have real trouble, you know, saying, Well, I know what God was thinking, because I don’t. And so, no, when you run for president, it’s a combination of, obviously, the experiences you’ve had in life, the principles you believe, and the desire to get something done.

And we all come with different philosophies and different backgrounds. But I would say the common — the common — the common ground with all of the people who have been president is there has been a desire to get things done on behalf of the American people.

And, you know, I — there’s a lot of talk about faith in politics. I always say one of my favorite Bible passages, when it comes to political figures, is I should not be taking a speck out of your eye when I have a log in my own.

HANNITY: That’s good for everybody, though.

BUSH: It really is important.

Why do I get a queasy feeling in my stomach when Hannity starts talking about 'destiny'??

  3. McWars Says:

In other words, Bush felt comfortable saying it.

Has this moron even read the Old Testament? The God of Abraham told people to do far worse things than any of that.

  5. barfly Says:

Well, I know what God was thinking, because I don’t.

And a president as incompetent as you, saying you were chosen by God, only reaffirms that God must be either crazy, or nonexistent.

  6. Nevar Says:

Dubya can thank the lord for giving him the jawbone of an ass.

  7. ElBruce Says:

George seems to have missed those other messages about stuff like helping the poor, doing unto others as you would have them do unto you, avoiding loud displays of piety, promoting peace, and all like that.

“This struggle is waged with the technology of the 21st century, but at its core it is the ancient battle between good and evil.

I also believe this. Republicans are the face of moral evil today.

"God would tell me, 'George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan.' And I did, and then God would tell me, "George go and end the tyranny in Iraq,' and I did."

    George, have another pretzel.

Holee kee-rap! Man, if somebody was able to quote me what God personally said to them, I'd want them locked up for their own safety. Also, maybe not running the free world.

  9. Zooey Says:

Why give up blasphemy now, Chimpy?

  10. tarazan Says:

Such thinking of 'good' vs.'evil'is very dangerous, specially when one like Bush thinks that God chose him always to be on the 'good' side but his opponenets, adversaries and enemies are on the side of 'evil'.
Such thinking excuses people like Bush from any guilt ,remorse or any feeling about what they do because they think always they are on the side of good fighting evil.

  11. rmwarnick Says:

Of course, the people who believe in God also believe that He sometimes visits punishment on humanity-- "chosen by God" could mean as an instrument of doom. Seems to have turned out that way.

  14. Bobwurst Says:

Bush used to know what god was thinking, until God went and picked that nigra, and now bush doesn't know what to think.

  15. TXProgressive Says:

For cripes sake, he wasn't picked by "the almighty" he was picked by the supreme court.

    What a moron.

  16. Jackie Says:

The lyrics of the song '"Viva la Vida" should be Bush's theme Song. With his actions over the pass 8 years you can be sure God isn't interesting in George W. Bush or his Family. George W was picked out but it was by Satan and the Republican Christian Based followed him. Yes the bible did say Satan would use people but most Christians didnit bother to read the bible. Israel calls themselves God's chosen people and we see them now invading Palestine and committing a Palestine Massacre all while using God's name and lying about everything. I guess murdering children is ok with Bush and Israel.

  17. Nevar Says:

George: "I always say one of my favorite Bible passages, when it comes to political figures, is I should not be taking a speck out of your eye when I have a log in my own."

There were a lot of things you should not have been doing with the logs in your eyes...
Reading intelligence briefings, looking out an airplane window at hurricane damage, riding bicycles....

  18. RUCerious Says:

    Got golden calfs?

  19. Nevar Says:

Maybe the burning Bush thing is starting to make him squeemish....

Bush's God lives in a bottle of Jim Beam.

  21. coskibum Says:

God knows Georgie, you're an Evil Doer(did you hear that-- I know I did)... Anytime anyone tells you they know what God wants, turn, run and take cover...

  22. Roket Says:

George Bush doesn’t even go to church for Christ’s sake. He has no clue that the God of Islam, Christians and Jews are one and the same. Besides, I prefer to think of him as more of an AntiChrist.

  23. Leftside Annie Says:

    Poor God.

    He gets blamed for everything.

  24. ralph the wonder llama Says:

After hearing some of the stupid shit that comes out of Bush's mouth, I'd think he'd be uncomfortable just saying what HE thinks, let alone what God thinks.

And I think I'll need Daryll to check on this for me, but I don't think that God really wears or has need for shoes:

" far be it for me to put myself in the Almighty’s shoes or position"

  25. Nevar Says:

    At least not open-toed shoes...

  26. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Here's something people who say God spoke to them can't answer: How do you know that it was the God that you pray to that spoke to you? Better still, how do you know it wasn't the Devil who told you to do all those ungodly things?

  27. Perry logan Says:

It's not God, George. It's just your earpiece.

  28. Bob Says:

He's just subtlely dropping the facade that religion was anything more than a bargining chip to be used or discarded as necessary.

  29. moonsha Says:

Well, God will probably tell Bush there is no room at the Inn.

  30. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

I have real trouble, as I repeat, I have real trouble, you know, saying, Well, I know what God was thinking, because I don’t.

That's funny, George, because I heard God says the same thing about you.

  31. The Dogfather Says:

"We're on a mission from God."

At least when Elwood Blues said that, it was in the context of a comedy, not a tragedy...

  32. konchster Says:

This guy gives God a bad name

  33. And Yet... Says:

One phrase always came to mind immediately for Georgie Bush's claims of talking with "God" (simplest explanations are sometimes the most accurate)-

A DRY DRUNK STONED ON PILLS TALKING.

  34. shoeless Says:

That's good. I've always felt uncomfortable whenever Bush claims he knows what God is thinking.

  35. Danko Ramone Says:

Lemme see if I have this right...you expect honesty, and for that matter, words that makes sense, to come from that man's mouth?

  36. Marie Says:

    WTF?
He always spoke as if he had a special "red phone" to his "higher father." He said God told him he wanted him to be president. He said he was on a divine mission in Iraq.
Really -- the man is delusional. He has lost all sense of reality.

  37. livelongandprosper Says:

Some God told me I should kill Bush. Fortunately, I don't believe in God, so I ignored Him.

Also the God of Abraham is the same god the Muslims and the Jews worship. That is why all 3 religions are called the Abrahamic Religions.... Doh!

Perhaps he doesn't understand that the more goofy things he says aren't "cute" or show his "human side" but just plain weird and crazy.

  43. Buckie Boy Says:

If you think 'God' is talking to you, you need to go to the doc, you've got some real problems...

    ....isn't that right, RupteredRectum....

....Phuckabee is going to be President elect.

  44. green Says:

I wonder what Georgie's god has to say about torture?

  45. Marie Says:

At the risk of starting another religion diversion -- I am compelled to say again that religion is at the root of this. It's all a version of some kind of "my god is better than your god" or "my god leads me to do this or that"
or "I prayed to (my) god and I received his direction."

There is something very primitive, very superstitious, and childishly un-intellectual about it.

    That's all I will say.

  46. tomcat27834 Says:

Ahhhh, level with us Bush....you know Karl Rove was bent on getting a "dry drunk" elected...its such a rush!!

P.S. No offense to "dry drunks".......its an INCOMPETENT, PARANOID dry drunk that is the problem.

Well then, I guess that makes Georgie both a criminal and a hypocrite.

    Judges 16:30

And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might; and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people that were therein. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than they which he slew in his life.

The first suicide bomber was in the Old Testament. Try again bushie.

I wonder what Georgie’s god has to say about torture?

Oh, he's cool with it. He said so to George once during a massive dump.

  52. curious Says:

Uncomfortable. Really? I remember when he said he prayed to God and God told him the war was righteous. Well at the same time, the late Pope said that God told him the war was immoral and wrong.

You see what happens when religion takes the place of cogent thought and sanity? All through history there are MEN who speak for God. The arrogance and hubris and plain nuttiness never ends. There are always people who commit the worst crimes because the voice of God told them to. This is no different. And death is usually the result of hearing that voice. It doesn't matter if the rationale comes from a President, or someone who has just killed a group of people after talking to God.

    Ah, religion!!!

  53. dbadass Says:

What is this with the whole deal of leaders trying to somehow link themselves to one as if they are somehow closer to?. Did the pharoahs start this shit or has the whole premise from the get go been that as leader I get to be "cooler" than you? Food For Vail...

  54. sectionop92 Says:

How come all of these Republicans and Evangelicals have this magical direct connection with the Lord God Almighty, yet other real religious leaders preach some temperance in how God's will (according to them) actually works?

How come I think the answer to my question comes down to #1 money and #2 power over the lemmings!?
