Inhofe: Browner Is A Secret Socialist Who Belongs To A Scary Group Called The Center for American Progress

Appearing on Fox News this morning, Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) peddled the emerging right-wing trope that Barack Obama’s White House energy and climate adviser Carol Browner is a secret socialist. The source of the right-wing paranoia is Browner’s brief participation in a group called the Socialist International’s Commission for a Sustainable World Society.

As the Wonk Room’s Brad Johnson explained in a thorough debunk, the Socialist International is a “worldwide organisation of social democratic, socialist and labour parties” from Albania to Zimbabwe, intended to foster global partnerships to confront issues like climate change. Its members include the center-left New Democratic Party of Canada, the center-left Israeli Labor Party, and the ruling Labour Party in Great Britain.

Nevertheless, following in the footsteps of the National Review, Glenn Beck, the Washington Times, and Drudge, Inhofe called Browner a “socialist.” But he delved even further into conspiracy-land:

I have other problems with Carol Browner. There’s another organization that a lot of people don’t realize — it’s called the Center for American Progress. This report that came out — this is the group that’s trying for the Fairness Doctrine. Trying to, I think, dramatically upend the First Amendment. And try to stop talk radio and talk TV from being conservative.

FOX: And she was a member of that group?

INHOFE: Yes, she was a member of that group. It’s called the Center for American Progress.

In one fell swoop, Inhofe characterized Browner, the Center for American Progress, and the authors of this blog as part of a grand socialist conspiracy. Watch it:

Inhofe was holding up a copy of a joint Center for American Progress and Free Press report on talk radio, entitled “The Structural Imbalance of Political Talk Radio.” Inhofe might want to open it up and read what it says about the Fairness Doctrine. The report specifically does not call for reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine.

A key author of the report said, “There is no need to return to the Fairness Doctrine.” Instead, the report argues, “Increasing ownership diversity [of radio stations], both in terms of the race/ethnicity and gender of owners, as well as the number of independent local owners, will lead to more diverse programming.”

Hewing to the baseless concerns of Rush Limbaugh, the right-wing spends an inordinate amount of time mobilizing opposition on a matter that the left has expressed little interest in pursuing. But don’t believe us — we’re all part of a socialist conspiracy!

Update The video is now working.
Update Brad Johnson has more on the Inhofe interview.
Update Keith Olbermann named Inhofe the "worst person in the world."

I look forward to Inhofe trying to get away with this blather in the confirmation hearing itself, and the forthcoming pimpslap that Browner is going to put upside his misbegotten cranium.

This is just Inhofe, again, doing anything he can to paint Climate Change realists as radical socialist loons. Nothing we do or say will change him. But we can continue to point out that Inhofe has completely lost his marbles. FoxNews, on the other hand, will always give him a platform to spout nonsense.

I’m with the others: where do I sign up for this “vast left-wing conspiracy”? … and will we have bake sales?

Bake sales are only to be held after we decriminalize marijuana.

Basically it’s on an easter-egg at change.gov. Since right wingers barely know how to work interwebz, they’ll never find it. First you give them all of your information, like everything, because as Liberals, we all trust the government to take care of us wisely. Once you’re on the list, you just sit back and wait for that monthly government check to roll in, taken directly out of the account of one randomly selected Hard Working American (wink, wink) each month. It’s a pretty sweet deal.

Here are some talking points to use on Republicans that you know, in case they complain about the forthcoming Socialist Revolution:

    1) Conservatives are dumb, and Liberals are smart, so this system only establishes the appropriate food chain. Like cows, they can work hard to develop proteins, and we can take it from them as our natural right.

    2) Once everyone is economically equal, we’ll have more time to do important things like blog, and they can do all the labor or whatever it is those neanderthals enjoy. Drive trucks around moving things, and let us take care of more important concerns.

    3) They don’t need very much money. Since they have no taste, they can’t appreciate luxury goods properly anyways. If you need me to draw you a picture, try to imagine Dubya discussing wine.

    4) Obviously, given the ability to make choices for themselves, they have chosen monster trucks, McDonald’s, and Sarah Palin. The privilege of freedom will now be revoked for the greater good. Seriously, who would you want arranging your life – you, or Obama? He’s smarter than you anyways.

Be sure to share these arguments with every Republican you know. Remain glib and chipper while repeating them. Deflect any complaints – typically, “that’s already been taken care of” is a good reply, because it lets them know that we’ve already worked out whatever they’re blathering about in committee, and don’t care. If they continue to argue, just turn around and leave as if they had vanished, or let your gaze fall on something more interesting, as a subtle and polite hint that they don’t matter any more.

See, PNAC is comprised of fiercely loyal neocons who want absolute rule of America so that they can lead the world through military and corporate might. They would NEVER EVER be involved in anything that would harm America, without a really good reason anyway. Collateral damage and all, you know. Unfortunate, but necessary to propell the propaganda and lead the world into the new age of American rulership over all living things and even space and (one day, they dream) time itself. For THEY and ONLY THEY know what is best for everyone in the world, and if everyone would just act like good slaves and do as they say, it would all be just fine, a utopia of golden parachutes which land softly on the broken bodies of the worthless workers who are ungrateful for the miserable lives of toil the corporate masters allow them to suffer until their ultimate demise. Mr. Intellectual, or #50:
Gross generalization. First, I’ve seen no one call “everyone” a “fascist” or a “pig”, just particular people, especially those making virulent “anti socialist” statements like Inhofe.

    Second, define “normal”.

  52. rocks911 says:

  53. CageyCretin says:

    glezzery Says:

well, now. This is a site where mainly left or progressive people post. It is biased and is meant to be. This topic (and others) does not rate a high level of discourse, therefore most of the comments are entirely or partially tongue in cheek 9that means, not serious).

The little you said does, however, seem to indicate that you are of the belief that socialsim is evil. Please explain, if you can. Define socialism, and include in that definition specific reasons as to the evil of the ideology. Also, how it cannot be used in conjunction with other ideololgies, and how we in America do not have anything that is socialist in structure (you will find that you do and will benefit from socialist programs here in the states). And you could include explaining how socialist type programs can’t be introduced into America (again, noting that we already have some).

No single political system is perfect: none. And all fail miserably when they try to operate within pure ideology, because they all mis-calculate human nature at some point in their thinking, and most have basic flaws to begin with.

If you came here for a purely serious discussion, then you are in the wrong place.

    _________

The Constitution is a document housed under several inches of bulletproof glass at the National Archives. It would be extremely unlikely for it to be even remotely pathogenic.

I also find it highly unlikely that it would be either pro-socialism or anti-socialism, as it describes the basic mechanics of a system of government rather than an economic system. However, it does enumerate in the Preamble and Article I several duties and powers to the federal government that would suggest a hands-on rather than a laissez-faire approach to economic policy.

No, it’s actually been scientifically confirmed. He set a record in the world trials, and then broke it again in the final competition. Also last year, Inhofe received the Nobel Stupid prize, “for unrelenting and awe-inspiring achievements in the area of moronic bugf**kery, and for having the temerity to consistently ‘go full retard’ in public discourse.”

  96. jpopphan says:

Is this what the right-wing movement has come to? “Socialism is scary”?

    *sigh*

The frank truth is that we do indeed need socialism! Most of our allies have adopted smart, socialist policies that make the lives of their citizens better, healthier and safer.

A nationalized health care system would eliminate the worries of the millions of Americans who current lack any health insurance. A nationalized energy company would reduce the fluctuation of prices, which most of the time are not the result of changes in supply but in manipulation of supply. A nationalized education system would allow every American who is capable to get an education through the post-graduate level without going into deep debt in order to do so.

We need more socialism and much less of the crap we have now.

The decay started eight years ago. I read in the Dallas Morning News the other day that it would take 40 consecutive years of the amount of surplus left by president Clinton in the federal coffers to break even from what that putz in the White House has left us. The worst president in our countries history. Why did it have to happen on my generations watch?

  103. LibertyLover says:

The decay started eight years ago…

more like 28 years ago. It all began when Reagan stated that government was the problem…

WE ARE the GOVERNMENT in this country.

  104. ElBruce says:

    glezzery Says:

I don’t know how folks go from regulating interstate commerce and promoting the “general” welfare to socialism?!?!

Me neither. You guys are the ones who keep using that word. And yet, any two wingnuts will give you two different definitions of it.

    .

    glezzery Says:

What does hands-on mean exactly? Like control?

Like, appropriate regulation and enforcement thereof.

    .

    glezzery Says:

There is nothing in the Constitution that suggest the government control free markets.

There’s that “promote the general welfare” thing you mentioned a second ago. Also, there’s nothing there whatsoever to say that it shouldn’t.

    .

    glezzery Says:

Yeah, look at the Great Democrat Fannie Mae Scandal!

Breaking news, that was one of scores of majore financial institutions to fail at the same time. Sorry be the first one to inform you about the massive across-the-board crash in the mortgage and financial markets.

    .

    glezzery Says:

    More like predatory home buying.

This is what reasonable people refer to as “blaming the victim.” It’s what you Republicans do whenever you get caught: pull up your pants and whine that she was just asking for it. Quit sobbing on behalf of the (still) incredibly wealthy.

Basically, you’ve selected about 3% of the relevant facts, and are completely ignoring the other 97%.

Like bundling risk into Credit Default Swaps, so the holder didn’t know what the buyer’s position was, and therefore both sides were blind to their risk exposure. Like the fact that most financial corporations were simultaneously buying and selling CDS Protection, basically dumping money into betting up or down on the value of other people’s assets. Like ratings agencies being paid by the people whose assets they were rating and – surprise, everything’s just peachy! Like the fact that none of this was regulated, so all actors in the market had zero transparency or information about who they were connected to. Like the fact that the “everybody’s doing it” mentality once again caused a full-on lemming situation, just as it did during S&L Deregulation and the Great Depression, both also caused by Republican control of government.

But let’s look at the buyer side. How about all those “house flippers,” so prevalent they were getting their own reality TV shows? Or the other reality TV shows about kids selling $5M houses for $8M? Or, real estate values inflated so much that people were paying twice what houses should have cost, at every level across the board? Remember the news reports about how people couldn’t afford to move, and other people were dumping their life savings into second and third houses because homeownership was so lucrative? Everybody on both sides was betting that the continuing inflation in real estate equity would lift them out of being overleveraged. Clue: when everybody bets on the same thing at the same time, everybody loses.

First-time homeowners were responsible for about 4% of the failed mortgages, even less of the total value of holdings (since those were the cheapest houses). The rest was the usual Republican administration party time that we’ve seen over and over again.

Besides dude, if we knew we could take down the Man and his entire corporate system just by taking out a few risky mortgages, we’d have done it in the 70’s!

  105. LibertyLover says:

    * The President set a goal to increase the number of minority homeowners by 5.5 million families by the end of the decade. Through his homeownership challenge, the President called on the private sector to help in this effort. More than two dozen companies and organizations have made commitments to increase minority homeownership – including pledges to provide more than $1.1 trillion in mortgage purchases for minority homebuyers this decade.
    * President Bush signed the $200 million-per-year American Dream Downpayment Act which will help approximately 40,000 families each year with their downpayment and closing costs.
    * The Administration proposed the Zero-Downpayment Initiative to allow the Federal Housing Administration to insure mortgages for first-time homebuyers without a downpayment.

This administration is responsible. and Most Especially. Phil Gramm… who wrote the laws that took away the regulations that prevented predatory lending..

Sure there were people that got in over their heads and borrowed over their limits, but without banks’ greed, it never could have happened.

  106. ElBruce says:

Oh yeah, I totally forgot to mention Bush’s “ownership society” drive, if you really want to blame first-time homeowners.

I mean you really do HAVE to be stupid to call us names then beg us to attack you then in some bizzare indication that you need the help of a mental health professional tell us you like it when liberals are nice or when they WERE nice. Did you mean you thought it was a much better time when Liberals just TOOK the insults and personal attacks of your spokesdemons like Annie Gangleskank Coulter, Micheal Weinerdog Savage who ALSO called liberals brownshirts or the Oxymoron Limbaugh who does little else besides denigrating liberals and we DIDNT fight back? Perhaps those were the good old days for you. I dont think they did the left any good. I also dont think you have the good sense God gave the common dog. Gee I thought Bush and right wingers had control of all branches of the government for 6 years.

Why is it that right wingers never hold Republicans accountable and then somehow think left wingers have the same attitude towards Democrats? I would be just as horrified by what has happened in the last 8 years had it been a Democratic controlled government. Of course it wasn’t. So what, you still want me to blame the Democrats?

You came armed with the usual talking points that were programmed into you by those who do your thinking for you. I never saw Bush mentioned at all it is however incumbent on the brainwashed morons like YOU to talk about liberal hate as you were TOLD to think that. You are far more conditioned than any of Pavlovs dogs ever were. You call us names then beg us to attack YOU then even though you got mostly reasonable responsed keep pretending that the response you HOPED for is the one you got. I mean we already know you are stupid. You have proven you are stupid. You are apparantly unduly PROUD of how stupid you are. It really isnt our fault you are stupid. I dont know what else besides proudly parading your stupidity that your continued stupid posts are supposed to prove but really it will only prove it to your monumentally substandard brain. Please get help immediatly. I know that usually stupid isnt a terminal illness but in YOUR case it might be severe enough that you forget to breathe.

  113. LibertyLover says:

And then blame everything on Bush.

    Nope I blame:
    Milton Friedman, Hayek, Burke, Locke…

Bush just put their stupid libertarian/elitist/ruling class BS into action.

Funny thing is, their policies run totally counter to democracy. And since you seem to be a Randian…. there has never been a successful society based on free market ideas. Not one. They all fail.

Studies have already shown that Fannie and Freddie’s policies had little to do with the mortgage meltdown.

  118. LibertyLover says:

I would love to have a sit down discussion with you, but you obviously have had your head filled with nonsense. And make assumptions about people that you know nothing about.

Yes, zero down is predatory, if the person borrowing cannot sustain the house payments because they don’t have the income to support it. And if and when the housing bubble burst from all the speculators in the marketplace, and they end up upside down in their homes and cannot make the payment or refinance… it makes it SO much easier to walk away from the house if they have NOTHING invested in it.

But never mind, I will not convince you of anything and I have certainly heard all of your arguments before.

    Peace out.

  119. dbadass says:

    5. Its economic unfeasibility.
    6. The fact the government is not smart enough to control things.
    7. Bread lines…
    8. Also, that little thing called a Republic?!?!

(numbering added by me for responses)

    1. Private property exists under socialism. As with all guaranteed rights, it’s a minimum limit beyond which the state can’t transgress, not a maximal principle.
    2. That’s “dictatorship,” not “socialism.”
    3. Yeah, those damn brutal Swiss… Actually, every belief system, whether economic, religious or otherwise, has a long murderous history with the body count in the millions.
    4.
    5. How’s that unregulated free market working out lately? Nah, that’s unfair. Let’s look at another period instead, say, the Great Depression, also caused by unregulated free markets?
    6. That’s because sometimes we keep electing Republicans. Once we stop doing that and start electing smart people, things will be much better.
    7. What do you have against bread? You mean those bread lines they had in the Great Depression? The one caused by unregulated free markets?
    8. Tell you what, before we go any further, could I have your definition of Socialism? Because I’m not sure I understand what you think it is. Sounds like you have it mixed up with gonorrhea or something.

  141. dbadass says:

  142. Angry McAngus says:

What benefits the social group of the human species is individual rights.

Uh, oh, sounds a little liberal.

  143. ElBruce says:

    glezzery Says:

    The states.
This an argument against Private Property in general?!?!

Nope. I don’t believe there shouldn’t be private property. Just that some types of human endeavor are in the public interest. Some property should be public, because no private entity is incentived to develop it. Assets held by the state constitutes public property. Roads are extremely useful to many private entities because they help them transport goods and services. But they’re not useful enough to any one private entity for it to assume the cost and risk involved to create them. Therefore, either the state must develop a road system, or there will be no road system, and therefore a vastly poorer economy. Your argument favors the latter option.

    .

    glezzery Says:

Exactly. Someone said studies show Fannie Mae is not the central cause of…
so i asked for burden of proof.
If you asking for proof it is, it is forthcoming.

It’s not a “who asked first?” situation. The extroardinary claim is the one that requires proof. An “extraordinary claim” would be a positive statement, such as that a given single specific agency was the cause of the financial meltdown.

For example, if I say that the meltdown was not caused by UFO’s, I shouldn’t have to prove it to you. If you then claimed that it was, you should have to prove that.

    .

    glezzery Says:

    Whatever.

    Oh, SNAP, Miss Thang!

    .

    glezzery Says:

    Government EQUALS Country!??! Nonsense.
Do you have to love Communism to love Russia?
    Good Luck with that notion.

“Country” consists of: geographic region, government, culture and history. What is it that you love? You may have to think about that for a while, but we can wait.

    .

    glezzery Says:

Skepticism of and freedom from intrusive government is the bedrock of America.
Am i wrong here? and if i am, let’s hear it lmao.

That statement sounds pretty good to me.

Hey, even the Left has a strong tradition of “question authority.” But that’s not the same thing at all as hating all government, or believing it’s useless, etc.

Freedom from intrusive government is the basis of many if not most of our Democratic institutions. But that’s not the same thing at all as hating all government, or believing it’s useless, etc.

    .

In general, you seem to be using a dialectic approach which presupposes that either we must have the most liberty possible or fall under the sway of a completely intrusive dictatorship. I submit that these are not the only two options, and in fact that neither option has ever really worked for anybody.

A maximal concept of liberty actually has a name in political discussion: it’s called “Anarchy.” You are arguing for Anarchy, but only in the area of property rights – basically, economic anarchy.

The rest of us are merely pointing out that there is a degree to which the rule of law should govern economic transactions, and also that certain human endeavors should be undertaken publicly, rather than leave everything to individual interests all the time, no matter what.

That’s a far cry from immediately jumping to the opposite end of the scale and insisting that unless there is no government, we’re all crushed beneath the thumb a brutal Soviet-style system.

You’re [sic] individual rights end where they put others at risk.

So you will admit to a concept of the “common good”?

Dammit, Angry McAngus broke my combo.

  147. dbadass says:

So than I am also not free to pollute that private property by pooring my dirty motor oil in the back yard right?

Now as to recreational drug use, gay marriage, and assisted suicide. how come the great nation of individual rights isn’t really holding up the bargain on that shit either?

Sorry, mon, didn’t see it coming. :)

Because when you get high, have gay sex and/or help someone end their life with dignity, you may not realize it, but you’re actually infringing on the religious rights of people who believe as an article of their faith that you don’t get to do those things. Violation of religious freedom ain’t cool, man.

    ;)

The RepubliCon Inhofe is an A$$wipe for Big OIL, enough said.

  151. dbadass says:

So one the wonders on all things nonSocialistic why do those nations up there in the cold seems to do so much better on so many indicators of quality of life?

  152. dbadass says:

So why do I not have the individual right to end my life. Your whole premise resides on individual freedoms doesn’t it. Now how the hell is not being jailed because you are homosexual related to not being allowed to marry in the very place you claim to be based upon individual freedoms? Am I forced to call bullshit?

  153. greenpagan says:

    Inhofe is an insufferable ass.

  154. LibertyLover says:

Your Nick is LibertyLover yet you are a Marxist

Please. I am closer to a Democratic Socialist like one might find in Sweden or Finland. You can’t paint me with that brush.

I happen to like socialism as it applies to oh, say, roads, and police departments and fire departments and the post office. To me, that is the common good.

And although many years ago, your ancestors hated FDR, he kinda saved capitalism from itself and the cancer stage where unregulated greed caused the First Republican Great Depression…(ooh, and built the interstate road system, to boot) Hopefully the Second great Republican Depression will not be as bad as the first, but since we don’t have manufacturing jobs in this country anymore… it could be a tough sell. Guess we’ll just have to rely on what worked for thousands of years before Reagan got into office… raise wages to a living wage, so we can buy more goods and services, so we can increase demand for things so we can produce things, so we can create more jobs.

I love a good tax break just like anyone else, but it only puts money in my pocket. It doesn’t create jobs. Never did, never will.

  155. kassandrasduplex says:

And what exaclty is wrong with socialism? After 25 years of failed Reaganomics (the top 5% of Americans owning or controlling some 90% of American’s wealth) socialism is looking really good these days.

  156. lespool says:

… What with the “liberal press” being so biased — why aren’t the republicans clamoring for some Fairness Doctrine?

  157. sheen says:

I couldn’t get excited about this election… I think we are in a mess. I hope God will help us. Obama is just a man.. black, white etc.
