Obama meets with some liberal pundits.

By Faiz Shakir on Jan 14th, 2009 at 2:10 pm

Obama meets with some liberal pundits.

Following up on last night’s dinner with right-wing luminaries, Barack Obama met this morning with a group of pundits that included some liberals. “The group included the Washington Post’s E.J. Dionne and Eugene Robinson, the Wall Street Journal’s Gerry Seib, National Journal’s Ron Brownstein, the New York Times Frank Rich and Maureen Dowd, and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, among others.” The participants were treated to “refreshments.”

Update Last night's right-wing roundtable included "Peggy Noonan, Larry Kudlow, Rich Lowry, Michael Barone, and Paul Gigot."

Obama met with conservative journalists, with moderate journalists, when will he meet with liberal journalists? and when will he meet with joe the plumber?

Well, well, well, do any of you Obama haters want to chime in now?

The president-elect is making the rounds, reeling in his enemies while reassuring his allies. He’s maintaining a schedule alright.

Exactly. After the past 8 years of a so-called president this is a breath of fresh air.

  12. ElBruce says:

I wonder if the wingnuts knew he was going to have breakfast with the libs the next morning? I bet Kristol would have re-thought that drunken lampshade performance if he knew Obama would be laughing about it with Maddow the next day.

    Bobwurst Says:

and when will he meet with joe the plumber?

Joe’s busy reporting from Gaza about how people shouldn’t report from war zones.

I hear David Brooks was there, and one wingnut to be named later. Maybe they ate sushi off of Ann Coulter. Yum!

Ugh! ElBruce you have a lot stronger stomach than I. Excuse me while I go vomit at the thought of that image.

  22. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

“Reaching out” is, well, reaching. Obama said during the campaign that he was going to sit down and talk to our enemies, to understand them and to find common ground. And many of us at TP praised that and voted for him in great part on the basis of that. So, why is anyone surprised and critical that he is doing what he promised, albeit with the political “enemies”? What Obama is doing is a smart form of psych-ops. He is going to neuter and neutralize the obstructionists.

  23. Fred says:

    Perry logan Says:
He should not reach out to traitors, and Republicans are traitors. That’s all there is to it.

We talked to the republicans for the 60 years they were in the minority the first time. This time will be no different.

Talking to them and taking their temperature is not reaching out to them and besides they are Americans and we have to get them to understand that their values are screwed and tell them how it will be…..

Just because you talk to someone doesn’t mean you like them or want to do what they want you to do.

That’s the whole stink over talking to Iran….basically the same thing if you think about it.

Absolutely correct! With all his talk of love, hope, forgiveness, and peace, Jesus changed the world dramatically and many of the Jews of his time followed him and, thereby, they and their descendents became Christians. So be careful, indeed. The world may change.

    Go back to Rush, seriously.

Every charismatic person is not Hitler, you blithering idiot. Didn’t you get angry when the Democratic Underground sorts called Bush Hitler? Then shut up now. You have far less to worry about from the military-industrial complex invading the public lives with Obama than Bush.

Paul Gigot? Ugh. I wouldn’t be able to eat with that smarmy pile of stupid at the table with me. I will never forget his commentary when Clinton apologized to the nation for lying about his Monica bj. Gigot said, “I don’t think he’s sorry enough.” I dropped (well, okay, threw) the plate I was washing at the time, resulting in an unholy mess of broken crockery and sudsy water in my sink.

One of my happiest days was when Gigot said good-bye to the News Hour on PBS – Brooks is much more bearable.

I wonder if Obama had to starve himself for a couple of days before this dinner? Or maybe he ate beforehand and just picked at his food. Or maybe he’s got a cast-iron stomach. Whatever, it would take something special to get through sharing a meal with a nauseating bunch like that.

Yeah, no doubt, a 473 post cyber-food fight. It just stuns me that TP doesn’t ban him, but without him that thread would never have reached 473, so go figure.

I think the symbolism of O. meeting with the Right one day and the Left the next is really cool. I also liked the point made by a poster last night that when you say nice things about those you disagree with, it makes it much harder for them to say bad things about you.

The only thing cooler than this bit of stagecraft would have been if he could have met with ALL of those writers and pundits at the same meal. THAT would have been really interesting. You might flip someone off on the highway, but you never do it in the grocery store. Getting all those people in the same room might have made them think about toning it down in the future.

Yes, very impressive. There was a thread about Obama and Lincoln earlier, but O.s actions thus far seem quite Lincolnesque, especially in regards to my favorite of all of Lincoln’s many quotes.

After the Second Inaugural, for my money the greatest, kindest speech in American history, a maimed Union soldier approached Lincoln and asked how he could not hate the South. Lincoln’s immortal reply: “Do I not Destroy my Enemy by making him my Friend?”
Such wisdom. Lets hope some of it permeates our government for the good of the people.

  52. Keltoi says:

    Hoodathunk Says:

Keltoi, just one question. Does you bold face homage to Lincoln apply to everyone?

    Every one except RHF… :)

No, seriously, it SHOULD apply to everyone, but I am not nearly as Christ-like as Lincoln was. Some crimes, some deeds, in my view, cannot be forgiven. Desmond Tutu said of the White Apartheid SS who had murdered and tortured his people: “These people have committed monstrous acts, but they are not monsters, not demons, they remain human beings.” Again, I am no Saint. But in terms of politics and simple ideology? Yes. I am friends with lots of people here who I strongly disagree with. I see that as the heart of what it means to be an American. The more you can embrace Lincoln’s quote, the better person and the better American you become, IMO. But everyone draws their own line.

Its like our talk about the Taliban yesterday, Hoodathunk. I am willing to talk to them, “destroy” their enemy status by making them friends. But bear in mind, Lincoln didn’t beg the South to cease its rebellion, he used force, and when they surrendered he was gracious in victory. There are some things you cannot allow to continue.

anyone hear the guy on randi rhodes just now???

    it goes like this:
just as boosh was able to take advantage of the world with the help of right wing pundits – whom he met with, twice – after 9/11, … so is obama planning an even bigger 9/11 of his own.
just get ready for it. … he asked randi to just be sure to tell it like it is, when it happens – and she answered “why wouldn’t i?!?”

then she brought all the sense back to the situation with the obvious conclusion – “WHAT’S LEFT TO STEAL?!? NO…”

    .

she opened the show with the news about last night’s righty dinner, and stirred a bit of a tempest about it… i called to tell her to look at ThinkProgress and the news of this meeting… the guy said he had just showed it to her…
i said “i know she’s not real keen on correcting herself, but it would be neat if she did”, and he said she would…
waiting for her to bring it up…

  61. katy says:

the guy asked randi if she though 9/11 was an “inside job”… she doesn’t go into the “conspiricy theories” – there are too many things we KNOW about that need attention…

but, she got to bring up her own favorite “theory” – in light of the drama of the past days of the pilot who ditched his plane which was immediately followed by 2 jets until it crashed…

where were those jets that morning when 4 passenger jets went out ot whack… eh?

    that’s all on this.

You answer like a politician, no substance or an actual relevant example. You may recognize this,

    Strengthen civil rights enforcement:

Obama and Biden will reverse the politicization that has occurred in the Bush Administration’s Department of Justice. They will put an end to the ideological litmus tests used to fill positions within the Civil Rights Division.

So where is the explicit detail you mentioned? If you would like, there are many more examples on the same website, http://origin.barackobama.com

He is good at touching people at their emotional core, but hides some facts. Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t heard a politician yet that hasn’t spoke in mostly half lies. McCain had his share too. What bothers me is that most will take what he says as the absolute truth. Mistake.

Joe Kennedy was one of the most influential people in his time. Correct, he did not speak directly to the masses, but his puppets used his words. Even more dangerous. How many sheeple did he get elected to carry out his vision?

Once again, no direct examples, just like Obama. You are driving my point home. If you, or anyone, can lead me to the details you speak of, I will be glad to read them.

According to the constitution, politicians are supposed to protect the country and the liberties of the citizens. I don’t see that part about being a visionary. In fact, the founding fathers tried very hard to limit the responsibilities of the executive office. I learned that from high school, not some puppet master like Rush or Chris.

You are responding to my opinion, and facts, by trying to put me down and make me look stupid. Calling me names and telling me I can’t think for myself. Why, when truth is much more effective. Maybe truth is more on my side?

When I served in the military I was a infantry squad leader and all of my team made it home alive. Both in Panama and Desert Storm, despite the efforts of the news media. So, I must be able to make some good observations and decisions.

Note: Con artist make a living by selling the CONCEPT

Folks, keltoi is not your basic troll. We are talking an uruk-hai. A mega-mutant troll. He posts how Lincoln was right about making an enemy a friend while he holds that war against afghans is the only answer.

“But bear in mind, Lincoln didn’t beg the South to cease its rebellion, he used force, and when they surrendered he was gracious in victory. There are some things you cannot allow to continue.”

Gracious in victory. God forbid that a group of states would take exception and walk away. Fire on Sumter, the only thing they understand is violence. Evil is rampant, they own slaves and better than 90% of Northern industry is based on child labor. He used force! The North hadn’t a single commander who could beat the South in tactics so he hired Butcher Grant who just kept throwing human lives into the fray until the South folded.

That isn’t rant. The only reason the North won is they had more lives to sacrifice.

Just like now. The Civil War was fought between an agrarian society and an industrial society. The North had the money and the bodies. Just like today. The big bucks boys have more resources. Doesn’t make them right, just lets them win.

  73. Hoodathunk says:

if Lincoln was so right, why did it take 100 years for his ‘dream’ to get a chance?

He posts how Lincoln was right about making an enemy a friend while he holds that war against afghans is the only answer.

He said that while Union troops were trampling all over the Confederacy. He wasn’t a pacifist by any stretch. He just wasn’t vengeful and wanted recouncilliation.

God forbid that a group of states would take exception and walk away. Fire on Sumter, the only thing they understand is violence. Your history is dead on, but what is your point? That Secession and Slavery was good? Are you, perhaps, a resident of the Old Confederacy?

Just like now. The Civil War was fought between an agrarian society and an industrial society. The North had the money and the bodies. Just like today. The big bucks boys have more resources. Doesn’t make them right, just lets them win.

We are rehashing yesterday’s argument. The Taliban government was as repressive and evil as Southern Slavery. As a pure percentage, it was worse since women make up 50 percent of the population and about a third of the South was enslaved. But we did nothing about it til 911 when AQ, which they harbored and embraced, attacked us.

if Lincoln was so right, why did it take 100 years for his ‘dream’ to get a chance?

What, Lincoln wasn’t right? You are taking the side of Jefferson Davis and Stephen Douglas over Abe Lincoln? Really? Are you sure you are on the right blog?

BTW, getting his head blown off 5 days after the end of the War did put a damper on Lincoln’s efforts to realize his ultimate vision for Reconstruction. JW Booth did more to harm the South than any Southerner in history when he killed Lincoln.

Hey YOU told us not to be sheep then snivelled that I told you directly that you dont think for yourself for parroting a particularly stupid rightwing meme? Are you kidding? I DID give examples. Iran, taxes the economy. I assume you DO know what a search engine is. YOU made the accusation the burden of proof is on YOU not for me. Why do I need to do your research for you. I know I listened to his speeches and heard plenty of specifics when they were appropriate and broad statements when THEY were appropriate. I notice the constitution doesnt specify that politicians have a pulse or breathe either does that mean they arent necessary. Your example of conmen is also frankly stupid. Get away drivers have to drive well does that mean driving well has no positive uses? The black/white Manichean thinking that everything is either unrepenetently evil or absolutly good is stupid. I am not trying to make you look stupid you are making yourself look stupid with just like with that stupid example. It has no relevance and makes NO SENSE. Are you really telling me that the President ISNT supposed to sell the concept? DID Roosevelt begin rural electrification with tons of specifics about how and where he was going to do it or did he sell the CONCEPT FIRST? You arent making sense.

Thoreau said if you are one who builds sandcastles in the sky GOOD, that is where they belong, now put their foundations under them. ( a paraphrase from memory) THAT is what good politicians do. That is what good politicians have ALWAYS done. Did Kennedy begin the space program with specifics about every dime NASA was going to spend or did he say We are going to the moon? The meme is frankly ignorant. First because there ARE specifics and either you didnt look for them or you cant recognize them and decided to regurgitate the talking point that some screechmonkey TOLD you to believe. I dont care WHAT you did in the military you are exhibiting all the symtoms of a brainwashed demented mynah bird repeating what you were TOLD to believe.

I’ll give you Dionne and Rachel, but do the rest really count as liberal journalists? They’re more or less not-conservative journalists, as Yglesias points out. Some of them are really moreso cultural critics, or people who spend as much time hitting at the left as the right and not always for good reasons. I don’t think our side was repped well.

Seek help fast. You are so stupid you are an object of pity. I feel so sorry for you. It is an amazing feat of astonishing self delusion that you think you are clever instead of understanding how utterly pathetic and ignorant you are. You will always be stupid. That is your lot in life. It is the burden you have to bear. You are like the begger showing off his amputation to get money when you show off how pathetically stupid you are to get attention. Please stop humiliating yourself this way. You are setting new world records in pathetic stupidity

The same thing he was thinking when he invited Krauthamer but not O’Reilly. It seems he was largely talking with print journalists.

    This is from http://www.barackobama.com/issues/foreign_policy/index.php#iran
This is not detailed, is it? Or is that the actual plan? To continue doing what we are doing now, only stepped up? we will step up our economic pressure and political isolation.??

    Iran

    * The Problem: Iran has sought nuclear weapons, supports militias inside Iraq and terror across the region, and its leaders threaten Israel and deny the Holocaust. But Obama and Biden believe that we have not exhausted our non-military options in confronting this threat; in many ways, we have yet to try them. That’s why Obama stood up to the Bush administration’s warnings of war, just like he stood up to the war in Iraq.
    * Opposed Bush-Cheney Saber Rattling: Obama and Biden opposed the Kyl-Lieberman amendment, which says we should use our military presence in Iraq to counter the threat from Iran. Obama and Biden believe that it was reckless for Congress to give George Bush any justification to extend the Iraq War or to attack Iran. Obama also introduced a resolution in the Senate declaring that no act of Congress – including Kyl-Lieberman – gives the Bush administration authorization to attack Iran.
    * Diplomacy: Obama supports tough, direct presidential diplomacy with Iran without preconditions. Now is the time to pressure Iran directly to change their troubling behavior. Obama and Biden would offer the Iranian regime a choice. If Iran abandons its nuclear program and support for terrorism, we will offer incentives like membership in the World Trade Organization, economic investments, and a move toward normal diplomatic relations. If Iran continues its troubling behavior, we will step up our economic pressure and political isolation. Seeking this kind of comprehensive settlement with Iran is our best way to make progress.

Again, if you could simple point me in the right direction, I would love to see the plan. Do you have a web address or anything specific?

Why do you use the word stupid so much? Truth is a better way to make a point. Calling people stupid is only a distraction from the truth and suggests that you lack the ability to communicate your thoughts. So, the other person is stupid for not understanding like you do. You seem like your smart and you certainly have passion, so why try to belittle rather than persuade?
