Bush won’t pardon Libby.

By Amanda Terkel on Jan 19th, 2009 at 7:47 pm

Bush won’t pardon Libby.

Today is President Bush’s last full day in office, and according to Newsweek’s Michael Isikoff, he has decided not to pardon Vice President Cheney’s former chief of staff Scooter Libby for his role in the leak of CIA agent Valerie Plame’s identity. The move has left many conservatives very disappointed:

cheneyb.jpg“I’m flabbergasted,” said one influential Republican activist, who had raised the issue with White House aides, but who asked not to be identified criticizing the president. Ambassador Richard Carlson, the vice chairman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a neo-conservative think tank, added that he too was “shocked” at Bush’s denial of a pardon for Libby.

“George Bush has always prided himself on doing the right thing regardless of the polls or the pundits,” Carlson said. “Now he is leaving office with a shameful cloud over his head.”

The right-wing had been mounting a fierce campaign to secure a pardon for Libby. Fred Barnes wrote in the Weekly Standard that Libby necessitated a pardon because he was “an indirect victim” of Bush’s policies. And the Wall Street Journal editorial board claimed that Bush “owe[d] it” to Libby. In July 2007, Bush commuted Libby’s prison sentence.

Hope this eventually leads to Libby talking.

    Reinvestigate 9/11 NOW!

  3. ralph the wonder llama says:

Oh, come on, wingnuts! It’s simple!

If Bush pardons him, then if called to testify, Libby can’t take the fifth.

How hard is that to understand?

  4. Jackie says:

For those who paid attention to Pat Fitzgerald during the Libby Trial, well Pat never charged Libby with all his crimes he saved some for later. Libby will go back to court and this time he wont get a pass out of jail. Bush is now looking out for himself as he has many many crimes to answer for. Cheney will be looking to cash in some of his Halliburton shares to see if a Judge can be paid off. This weekend Daddy Bush told his idiot, drunken, drug addict son he will do his best to save him but the others are on their own. Karl Rove is looking to go overseas as quick as possible.

  5. SamWeller says:

Send Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice to Hague!

    They committed war crimes!

  6. laworder says:

What more can you say about conservative values than their reaction to Scooter Libby. Here you have a guy that sold our country down the river, a traitor. A person willing to sacrifice our National Security to score cheap political points about a war that should never have been waged. This lying piece of sh*t should be in prison for the rest of his life, just like Aldrich Ames of the CIA and Robert Hansen of the FBI. What they did is no different than what Scooter Libby has done to our country. Ames and Hansen will die of old age in prison while Libby plays golf and is referred to by conservatives as some kind of hero. Pathetic.

  7. doctorTie says:

Very interesting Bush isn’t pardoning Scooter….I’d like to be a fly on the wall when that conversation was discussed. I am sure there is some diabolical, sneaky, self serving, malarky going on.

  8. ElBruce says:

Pardoning him on the last day of his Presidency would look like an admission of guilt. Plus, the fifth amendment thing. That’s all Bush really cares about. Plus, he already commuted Libby’s sentence anways.

  9. woodguy says:

OT, sorry to go off topic, but everyone should know that Keith is reporting that Shooter hurt his back moving boxes today and will attend the inauguration in a wheel chair.

The symbolism continues to boggle the mind!

There certainly is a cloud over his head, but this ain’t the reason.

  12. The Republic of Stupidity says:

    Well! This is interesting…

If Botch HAD pardoned some folks, it would have been a tacit admission of guilt. If they hadn’t done SOMETHING wrong, there would have been no need to pardon them, right? Soooooo… no pardons for some of them…

Which does leave open the possibility of being charged… heh…

Bet good money some folks aren’t going to sleep well tonight, or tomorrow night, or… heh…

Bush is gon in less than 28 hours. Why does Think Progress keep running posts on him? He’s done and will disappear. Will TP still talk about Bush after he’s gone?

Yes, until he is brought to justice.

    ElBruce Says:

Excuse me, but to accept a pardon, one has to admit to guilt.

Oh, good. It’s been awhile since we’ve had a fake-progressive troll on board.

    Welcome.

  19. curious says:

Carlson is just now deciding Bush has a cloud over his head?
Not because of our country being in shambles, but because he will not pardon Libby. Typical Republican sense of right and wrong.

There is no end to the judgment of a Republican.

  20. barfly says:

I’m guessing this announcement will be couched as Bush’s reluctance to have an end-of-term, Marc Rich-like stain on what remains of his shredded legacy, but it’s really a big fat thumb in the eye for Cheney.

No pardon means the Plame’ civil case can continue, doesn’t it?

  21. woodguy says:

  26. ralph the wonder llama says:

He’s history and we’re judging him, just like he wants!

  28. SP Biloxi says:

    “Bush won’t pardon Libby”

lol In translation, Bush screwed Libby and his GOP buddies. Besides, Bush couldn’t pardon Libby because under the guidelines in the DOJ, Libby would have to wait 5 years to petition for a pardon. Sorry Scooter, you have to wait until Obama’s term is over which Obama would never pardon Libby. I look for certain Bush cronies who are asking for a favor for clemency or pardon to throw Bush under the bus after he leaves office.

Bush basically sold his buddies snake oil to his cronies and they bought it hook, line, and sinker.

Less than 24 hours to go until the 44th President is sworn in.

I already told you, it’s “Progress”, not “progress”. If you’re going to pretend to be a Progressive, try to do it right.

  31. zuch says:

    There’s madness to the method:

If he pardons Libby, it may well be that someone will then compel Libby to testify….

    Cheers,

  32. ralph the wonder llama says:

    I Hate Bush Also Says:
    ralph the wonder llama,
I am a progressive. Why do you attack me? Is it because I’m bored of discussing Bush.

I’m not attacking you. I’m trying to help you perform your role with more authenticity.

Maybe I just don’t like change. See, in the past whenever you’ve logged in and played this game, you always capitalized “Progress”. As in, “we can discuss helping Obama achieve Progress”.

I thought it was cute. It’s not as cute this way.

Your neocon buddies are still talking about Clinton, so by my reckoning, we have 8 years beyond the last time a neocon pundit or internet troll complains that “Clinton did it too” to talk about bush. check back then.

  41. DNFP says:

I say, Screw that. It’s time to quit going to church and start drinking again!

Oh, I’m hoisting a tall frosty one as I type, I just don’t expect the need to drown my sorrows to be as strong as it has been for 8 years.

As for church, I haven’t been back since my wedding 9 years ago. Wonder if it’s still there?

  42. ElBruce says:

“Let us Think Progress?” “I Hate Bush Also?” Yeah, cute sock puppetry there.

    .

“Let’s put it behind us and heal” is what they said after the Army-McCarthy hearings. “Let’s put it behind us and heal” is what they said after Watergate. “Let’s put it behind us and heal” is what they said after Iran-Contra.

Now we’ve got violation of habeus corpus, admission of authorized torture, admission of authorized warrantless wiretaps, extraordinary rendition, signing statements, lying to obtain authorization to use force against another nation, cherry-picking and pipelining of intelligence past analysts, appointment of industry lobbyists to all industry regulatory positions, blatant refusal to conduct diplomacy to keep the peace in the world, and much much more.

Let’s put a stop to it. Every time we gave the evil people of America a pass on the evil they’ve done to the fabric of our society, they came back a few decades later to do even worse. They must be stopped, for once and for all. Actions must have consequences. The words of our Constitution must have meaning.

I don’t think that twenty or thirty years from now we could take a sh!tstorm worse than the ones the conservatives inflicted this time. Given yet another free pass they could very well achieve their dream of crushing for once and for all everything that America stands for.

They have to be stopped for good, here and now.

That’s why we’re still talking about Bush.

  43. DNFP says:

we need to do the work and implement progress.

    Right.

So shut up and go get involved in community projects.

Prove that you love your country by ACTUALLY doing something on the local level to improve it!

It’s what true Progressivism is all about.

  44. Bobwurst says:

  46. DNFP says:

Looks like LUTP wants to try to “scoreboard” us.

True progressives don’t brag about their “social work”, but lying sack of shit concern trolls always do.

So what if I out-donated, out community serviced you, and out-volunteered you?

That’s not important. What is important is just simply being involved.

    Idiot.

I’m curious, you (or the other you) keep saying “let’s do more progress” over and over again. I’ve never heard a progressive refer to “progress” like that, as opposed to specific positions on specific issues. What progressive areas are you most interested in advancing and why?

I’m taking your bait. Let’s do us up some progress. You pick an issue, a position, back it up, and we’ll echo-chamber you all the way home.

  49. SP Biloxi says:

Other Bush cronies are hosed for a pardon or clemency:

Junk-bond king Michael Milken, media mogul Conrad Black, former Illinois GOP governor George Ryan and former Louisiana Democratic governor Edwin Edwards. Bush also apparently turned down a last-minute plea from Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski to pardon her former GOP colleague Ted Stevens for his recent political corruption conviction.

  50. sgwhitefla says:

LTH and IHBA are trolling against investigating Bush. Unfortunately too many people want Bush and his cronies investigated. Propaganda on a blog won’t change that.

  51. VerbalKint says:

Perhaps Bush, in trying to secure his legacy, will try to avoid issuing pardons that look too much like a slap at the rule of law. Or perhaps it is because pardons do constitute an admission of guilt, and if he pardons his co-conspirators, it could put him on the block later.

  55. Hoodathunk says:

Why is it such a bad idea to investigate the possibility (choke) of wrong doing? Whenever I hear someone say move forward, forget the past, I figure they have a pretty good reason for wanting to ignore the tiger about to bite their ass.

    Satchel Paige was right.

  56. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Whenever I hear someone say move forward, forget the past, I figure they have a pretty good reason for wanting to ignore the tiger about to bite their ass.
    _____________

That would be my take on it too. Experience teaches that those most fond of forgiving and forgetting are those who stand to be convicted and do some serious time…

  57. sgwhitefla says:

I have mentioned this on other progressive blogs and maybe at some point someone with enough clout can get this done but has anybody other than me noticed that there are polls about everything under the sun nowadays EXCEPT a poll on whether the people in this country want to see the Bush Administration investigated and prosecuted? There has to be someone keeping a lid on that kind of thing because the truth is if a reputable polling company releases numbers that say an overwhelming majority of folks want to see them investigated then Obama and Congress won’t have anything to hide behind. Right now they can say that people might see it as partisan. But I have talked to Republicans that want to see them investigated just as bad as I do.

  58. Hoodathunk says:

    sgwhitefla Says:

I’m guessing there aren’t enough diapers in the world that would contain the hemorrhage that sort of poll would cause.

Besides, they only ask questions people could care less about the answers.

  59. stateofthedivision says:

Bush has ’til noon tomorrow to issue more pardons. Stay tuned.

  60. ElBruce says:

    Lines from IHBA/LUTP:

I agree IHBA (first thing LUTP said)
Bush sucks, let us focus on helping Obama get his progressive program passed.
We need progress and enought about Bush.
Let us move forward to progress!
TP should focus on progress and not Bush.
That way we can discuss helping Obama achieve progress.
I hope Think Progress focuses on its mission of spreading progressive ideas for America.
Obama is juts a spokesman, we need to do the work and implement progress.

See the common thread there? Not one single time did the sockpuppet tagteam say what it meantt by “progress.” It couldn’t actually bring themselves to type out any actual progressive position. Just “let’s have progress.”

If I went to redstate and started saying “let’s stop picking on Obama and focus on doing conservatism,” or “let’s have more conservatism instead of all this Obama-bashing,” they would realize in an instant that either I was ignorant or unwilling to actually post a real conservative opinion.

Mind you, I could pretend to be a conservative, because I understand their positions thoroughly, but I’m not so evil as to be able to do that or so stupid as to think it would have a positive effect of any kind.

  61. Hoodathunk says:

LUTP, how about we go one step further and remove health care as a profit center? Quit paying for insurance companies and HMO’s taking health care dollars for paperwork? Then your Beamer would have a lower tax on it.

So what’s your proposal to pay for heealthcare? DO you have a better idea?

look, li’l feller, I don’t for one second believe you’re an actual, sincere progressive. neither does anyone else who’s been around here for more than a week.

But on the bizarre chance that you ARE for real, here’s a little advice: true progressives think seriously and deeply about issues as complex as health care. They don’t characterize them as flippantly and carelessly as you just did. If you really believe in progressive causes, you will develop some sophistication in the logistical anlysis and in the principles that underlie the positions.

That way, you won’t log in to a progressive blog and sound like a right-wing plant who seeks to post stuff that makes progressives look like the foolish cartoons that right-wingers convince themselves that we are.

How’s that work fer ya, li’l buddy?

How about you just cut to the chase and plead for us all to urge Obama to kill more babies and promote support for terrorist rights? That’s where you want to go anyway.

    You know you do.

  72. tbone says:

It sure would be nice to hear Libby testify, but that is unlikely to happen. My guess is we will never fully know what went on with the Plame (or have our suspicions confirmed anyway). Surely any emails or papers regarding the matter have been deleted or shredded.

Speaking of which, can we expect a story in the next few days about missing documents/files that didn’t make the transition?

  73. DNFP says:

I say let us discuss this.

Wouldn’t a regressive like yourself rather spend the rest of your life defending torture, rendition or the benefits of a Unitary Executive?

Yeah, you said the before. Only that time you also included a soup kitchen and some other generic “good work”.

I didn’t believe you then, either.

And a real progressive wouldn’t think that working on a single national campaign made them automatically “more progressive” than someone of whom they know nothing other than some posts on a blog.

  76. Hoodathunk says:

  80. Hoodathunk says:

Ok, LUTP. That one is just enough to trigger a response. Being somewhat new to this place I am just a bit more forgiving, willing to give someone a chance that they are new to the whole idea of progressive thinking.

I’ll go out on limb here and say there are many here who sympathize with the plight of the people of Gaza. And there are those who would understand the frustration Hamas must have. I don’t think you will find any who would consider them a progressive group or believe they are beloved.

I’ll bow to those more experienced…go back under your bridge.

  81. pete says:

I thought that smell was familiar. Now it’s confirmed.

  82. DNFP says:

Sales taxes are regressive, and defining “luxury goods” is arbitrary. The income tax scale should be more progressive either way. Why do you “believe in” these things? I have my reasons, but I’m interested in yours.

    .

    Let us Think Progress Says:

I agree, the government should run the healthcare industry. It’s a human rifgt for all to have health care.

Don’t see the connection. Services aren’t necessarily rights, no matter how fundamental and important they are to everyone. But regardless of the vast public interest in universal health care, there’s no particular reason that we would need the government to provide the service directly, rather than to pay for it. That is, rather than nationalize hospitals, we’d just have national insurance.

    .

    Let us Think Progress Says:

Think Progress is all about Bush. It has the ability to promote progressive views like support for Hamas and Legalized Drugs. I say let us discuss this.

OK. Nobody here has ever supported Hamas. Ever. The only ones who think we do are wingnuts. You totally screwed up there, wingnut.

    Try again. :)

No you didn’t. There’s no way to absolutely prove that you were even in the Obama campaign or not – if you were a true progressive, you’d already know that the PLO-inspired cell structure established by ACORN and implemented at mybarackobama.com would make it impossible to prove either way, unless you can recite the Seven Principle Truths of Marxism that opens every meeting. Post ‘em and we might believe you…

  86. Fred says:

Boy, the glory of the Democrats taking power and a black man becoming the President of the US is just more than the righties can take isn’t it.

Funny and pathetic are our trolls these days.

    At least they are funny.

  87. The Republic of Stupidity says:

    Man… it’s gotta SUCK ROYALLY to be a GOOPer tonight… tee & hee…

Wish I could say I feel the slightest bit of sympathy for Botch and the rest of them, but I DON’T!!!

HEEEEEEEY!!! GOOOOOOOOPers… EAT FLAMING CHENEY and DIE, ya worthless *ss clowns from Hell…

  88. Fred says:

Bush is a Coke Head Says

Funny that they think they might fool someone. Guess they are just so used to being lied to and believing that they think it works on everyone….

Another funny thing is that they actually think they have something to defend. What sucess by bush et al can they hold up for the world and be proud of? I guess bush did help some with aids in Africa although of course it was with fundie strings attached.

  89. telestai2 says:

Scooterites: have we not established that “he was following orders” does not count as exoneration? Mr. Bush has just done one of the few “presidential” things of his 8 years, in refusing to blanket another criminal’s crimes under a Federal pardon. Treason and betrayal such as all the garbage around outing Plane, and then lying about the fiasco, deserves punishmenta commensurate with the crime.

  90. ElBruce says:

    telestai2 Says:

Scooterites: have we not established that “he was following orders” does not count as exoneration?

I’ll accept it. Who gave ‘em? My principle at the moment is, “following orders” is a perfectly acceptable defense, provided that we can replace your spot in the prison cell with whoever gave you those orders. If they were following orders too, they can trade out for their superior, etc.

  92. Buckie Boy says:

….wow, this is fun, ok, we will go for it, let’s see what you low IQ slugs got for us.

  96. Zooey says:

    Joe,

“George Bush has always prided himself on doing the right thing regardless of the polls or the pundits,” Carlson said. “Now he is leaving office with a shameful cloud over his head”.So this piece of $hit Richard Carlson an Ambassador and the vice chairman of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, a neo-conservative think Tank knows nothing about Democracy muchless defending it,what a joke. Why don`t all you trolls stay out in the sun tomorrow and turn to stone,So Obama can do his thing and get America going again.

  99. EugeneDebs says:

    I Hate Bush Also Says:

    ralph the wonder llama,
I am a progressive. Why do you attack me? Is it because I’m bored of discussing Bush.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

You are a concern troll. If Bush gets away with his trashing of the constitution and crimes what will stop the NEXT ethically challenged incompetent president from doing the same.

    You are a concern troll.

Nah. You give this infantile POS too much credit. Every so often it does some special favors for its pimp/pusher and gets rewarded with an extra line. Then the civilized world needs to endure a flurry of sock-puppets until the buzz wears off.

Its mommy must be soooooo proud. One would think she would learn to require a password to access her computer but, some folk never learn. She’ll remain blind until the feds drag her misbegotten progeny away.

    Hmmm… here’s a teory for ya…

    1. The trolls are indeed listless, dispirited, and well… just kinda sucky.

    2. Hundreds, even thousands of depressed Bush staffers, GOOP lobbyists and general RNC losers are being, how shall we say, unemployed daily right now.

Ergo… these latest trolls are just unemployed Republicans so desperate for ANY job, they’ll even blog for nickels. And feel lucky to get that much.

I mean… look at the utter incompetency exhibited by Bochtistas over the last 8 years… now compare that to this latest wave of listless, disinterested trolls.

    Similarities abound, huh?

Glad all you fellers were able to find some sort of job… heh…

  103. The Republic of Stupidity says:

    That’s “theory” above… “theory”…

  104. Keith says:

“Media Matters for America has repeatedly noted, White House press secretary Scott McClellan told reporters on September 29, 2003, that the president would fire anyone who leaked Plame’s identity, not just those who were found to have “broke[n] the law”: “The President has set high standards, the highest of standards for people in his administration. He’s made it very clear to people in his administration that he expects them to adhere to the highest standards of conduct. If anyone in this administration was involved in it [the leaking of Plame's identity], they would no longer be in this administration.’”

  125. Jane E. Schneider says:

This troll isn’t worth getting out my mallet (or rolling pin, heh.) Maybe in the old days, when he used to try harder, but now…nah. Besides, his schtick is so pathetic a flyswatter would do, not a mallet.
