‘I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear…’

Our 44th President takes the oath of office. There was a trivial, momentary slip when Chief Justice John Roberts asked Obama to recite the first line of the oath in the incorrect order. Roberts said “execute the office of President to the United States faithfully,” rather than “faithfully execute.” The oath reads: “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Obama paused and allowed Roberts to correct himself. Watch it:

Read President Obama’s full Inauguration Address below:

My fellow citizens:

I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.

Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents.

So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans.

That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet.

These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land – a nagging fear that America’s decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights.

Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America – they will be met.

On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.

On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics.

We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness.

In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted – for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things – some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom.

For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life.

For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth.

For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn.

Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction.

This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions – that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.

For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act – not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology’s wonders to raise health care’s quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. And all this we will do.

Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions – who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage.

What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them – that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works – whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public’s dollars will be held to account – to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day – because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government.

Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control – and that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous. The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our Gross Domestic Product, but on the reach of our prosperity; on our ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart – not out of charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good.

As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience’s sake. And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort – even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.

For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus – and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.

To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society’s ills on the West – know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.

To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world’s resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it.

As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us today, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment – a moment that will define a generation – it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all.

For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter’s courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent’s willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate.

Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends – hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism – these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility – a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task.

This is the price and the promise of citizenship.

This is the source of our confidence – the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny.

This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed – why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.

So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled. In the year of America’s birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people:

“Let it be told to the future world…that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive…that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet [it].”

America. In the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children’s children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God’s grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations.

  82. Wayne A. Schneider says:

I may be wrong, but don’t the president-elect and vice president-elect take their real oaths ahead of time, and that what we saw outside was purely ceremonial? That way, if the public ceremony is interrupted, the new president can still legally take office. The constitution only requires that the president take the oath before entering the office, not necessarily immediately before. I don’t think Chris Wallace is right. Barack Obama is legally the 44th President of the United States.

    Some interesting inaugural history at

    http://www.wallbuilders.com/LIBissuesArticles.asp?id=19942

Critics today claim that George Washington never added “So help me God!” to his oath 6 – that associating religious intent with the oath is of recent origins. After all, the presidential oath of office as prescribed in Article II of the Constitution simply states:

I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

But overlooked by many today is the fact that the Framers of our government considered an oath to be inherently religious – something George Washington affirmed when he appended the phrase “So help me God” to the end of the oath. In fact, it was universally acknowledged by every American legal scholar of that day that any legally-binding oath was overtly religious in nature. As signer of the Declaration John Witherspoon succinctly explained:

An oath is an appeal to God, the Searcher of Hearts, for the truth of what we say and always expresses or supposes an imprecation [a calling down] of His judgment upon us if we prevaricate [lie]. An oath, therefore, implies a belief in God and His Providence and indeed is an act of worship. . . . Persons entering on public offices are also often obliged to make oath that they will faithfully execute their trust. . . . In vows, there is no party but God and the person himself who makes the vow. 7

Signer of the Constitution Rufus King similarly affirmed:

[B]y the oath which they [the laws] prescribe, we appeal to the Supreme Being so to deal with us hereafter as we observe the obligation of our oaths. The Pagan world were and are without the mighty influence of this principle which is proclaimed in the Christian system – their morals were destitute of its powerful sanction while their oaths neither awakened the hopes nor fears which a belief in Christianity inspires. 8

James Iredell, a ratifier of the Constitution and a U. S. Supreme Court justice appointed by George Washington, also confirmed:

According to the modern definition [1788] of an oath, it is considered a “solemn appeal to the Supreme Being for the truth of what is said by a person who believes in the existence of a Supreme Being and in a future state of rewards and punishments according to that form which would bind his conscience most.” 9

The great Daniel Webster – considered the foremost lawyer of his time 10 – also declared:

“What is an oath?” . . . [I]t is founded on a degree of consciousness that there is a Power above us that will reward our virtues or punish our vices. . . . [O]ur system of oaths in all our courts, by which we hold liberty and property and all our rights, are founded on or rest on Christianity and a religious belief. 11

    Kennedy Collapsed

    January 20, 2009 2:46 PM

Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., who is battling a brain tumor, was taken away from the congressional luncheon in convulsions.

Kennedy was at a table with Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., Vice President Mondale and Mrs. Mondale, and others. While at the table, Kennedy began having seizures that lasted for several minutes. As they were carrying Kennedy out of the room, he was still seizing. President Barack Obama went out of the room with him, but he is back in the luncheon room now.

We are also told that Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., the oldest member of the Senate, was so upset and distraught from what he had witnessed, that he needed to be taken out. Byrd was conscious when he was taken from the room. The two have been friends for a very, very long time.

Obama just spoke to the luncheon about Kennedy, appearing extremely sober:

“First of all, I know that while I was out of the room, concern was expressed about Teddy,” Obama said. “He was there when the Voting Rights Act passed. And, along with John Lewis, was a warrior for justice. And so I would be lying to you if I did not say that right now a part of me is with him. And I think that is true for all of us. This is a joyous time, but it’s also a sobering time. And my prayers are with him and his family and Vicki.”

An ambulance could be seen driving from the U.S. Capitol.

The idea that blacks ‘universally’ hold Lincoln in high regard is less than accurate. Lincoln only ‘freed’ the slaves in the secessionist states. He also held that blacks could not be held equal with whites. His Emancipation Proclamation was political.

If Lincoln had been truly serious he would have followed Alexander II of Russia who emancipated the serfs two years before Lincoln and without war. Nor can we ignore that Lincoln’s original plan was to send the blacks back to Africa.

The Civil War was about economics. Just as is the past 8 years of Bush. If anyone had been serious about the emancipation of blacks why did it take 100 years for it to become a reality?

Remember, history is written by the victors. The South lost and, although you folks have made an admirable effort to maintain your separate history as you see it, it is, like your “peculiar institution” a regional curiosity rather than an accepted fact of history.

Posit…a group of people who were angry about another group who were telling them they were bad because they had a different idea of how to run their business. Posit…they bought people, like they bought livestock and, for the most part treated them as a capital investment. Posit…another group that employed people, including children, at a ridiculously low wage and didn’t care if they left because there was always another one to bring in to replace them.

Posit…a President who is willing to go to war to keep things to the benefit of the moneyed class.

Let’s give some other citizens a turn, huh?

Well, Hoodathunk, I’ll always try to live up to high expectations of my contributions here, and I appreciate yours.

What I was saying was not that history can never be revisited, only that you hold a minority view of the events and factors driving them in that period of history, and it appears to be a view in large part determined by the area in which you grew up, where that view is prevalent.

To expect others to embrace that view, when it seems parochial and limited to many, is a bit much to ask.

As I said, the elements you list in the struggle are absolutely crucial to the path of history. But you ignore or downplay many others, including the force of the anti-slavery movement in the north (especially among the liberal northeastern elite).

Roberts quite obviously intentionally screwed up the swearing-in ceremony, a sore loser as well it seems. Doubtless he pulled this one for his Confederate battle flag waving buddies down South, where I’m sure they’ll be having a big laugh over the incident while drinking stolen Scotch and smoking contraband Cuban cigars.

Sorry John, there will be no repeal of the 13th amendment and reinstatement of slavery anytime soon, so the terrible oppression that the Catholics have had to endure for so long will continue unabated. Try to look at the bright side, now you can blame it all on the Negroes and their president. Doubtless you’ll find plenty of sniveling conservative allies to validate your viewpoints and commiserate over your deep-seated feelings of racial inferiority

Like everyone that the Republicans placed on the Supreme Court in recent decades, Roberts has no business sitting on that bench. He is a disgrace to the nation and everyone who calls themselves conservative in America..

No it’s not. I have always, and will always hold the Office Of The President with respect. As much as I didn’t like Clinton, he was still my President. I would have never been glad to see someone throw a shoe at him. He’s my President.

Holy jumping tacos on a trampoline, people are arguing about the Civil War? I’d be way more concerned about that damnable Peloponnesian fracas they had a while back. Cursed Greeks! Suffice it to say that the South’s application to secede from the Union was respectfully declined.

And it doesn’t matter what it was “about,” what matters is what it did. People knew what the consequences would be, and each proceeded accordingly according to their aims. Which means that regardless of whether Lincoln’s primary goal was economic rather than emancipation, he knew damn well it would lead to emancipation and that wasn’t a problem for him.

Frankly, to argue that the North shouldn’t have enforced the “United” part of the U.S.A, means that this country wouldn’t exist today. Which means that anyone who argues such doesn’t want this country to exist today. Which means Q.E.D. they’re unAmerican, aka. citizens of Fake America.

The Civil War had nothing to do with slavery. (Despite years of bickering over each new state and whether or not it should be a “slave” or “free” state.)

Anthrax attacks did not happen on US soil.

Right. And under the Constitution, the Federal goverment can delegate itself power by passing laws, removing those from the states

    Hoodathunk Says:

I am confused. This amendment seems to state that the States or the people have the rights to anything not specifically enumerated in the Constitution.

Ah, but the Constitution enumerates the right of Congress to pass laws. So the legitimacy of those laws is derived from the Constitution, and therefore supercedes those of states. But it doesn’t matter what you or I think of it anyway, the fact is that the SCOTUS has a reaaaallly long history of viewing it this way. And the SCOTUS’ rulings are final… as accounted for in the Constitution.

  363. belac says:

See, the way this country works, and did prior to the civil war, is that the majority of Tennessee citizens could VOTE for new representatives if they disagreed with the agenda of their current legislators. So to suggest that the innocent citizens of Tennessee had no voice is ridiculous.

Why is it that when this stuff gets discussed, it is rarely explicitly stated that the precious right that the southern states chose to take a stand on was that of slavery. Hoodathunk, this makes it impossible to discuss this issue of federal/states rights in the context of the CIvil War in the absence of discussing the South, slavery (or even wet clams.)

  387. belac says:

A lot of people died, yes. The South was destroyed, yes. Lincoln did everything he could to AVOID the conflict but Mr. Davis forced his hand by shelling Ft. Sumter… the South brought this conflict on themselves but in the end the freeing of the slaves was a good thing, as was preserving the Union, even if some in the South refuse to recognize the benefits they’ve received from the Federal Government.

  388. ralph the wonder llama says:

Hoodathunk, I just took a break from work to pop in here and check up, and your current argument escapes me.

First, you seem to be saying that a few million dead, the South devastated and logged into a weird ass idea that they should agree the North won outweighs the good that came from the Civil War being fought — the preservation of the union, the end of sanctioned slavery in this nation, the commercial and industrial power this nation grew into.

    Weird argument, but okay…

But the thing that really confuses me is you keep taunting others to “pick up the gauntlet”, as if no one else was addressing your arguments. belac, gummitch, ElBruce are all giving you ample push back, and you seem to be ignoring most of what they say.

At the very least, they qualify as “picking up the gauntlet”, no?

Unless you’re seeking something different as a “true believer”, I don’t know.

    Back to work. Carry on.

  389. belac says:

and I am still waiting for one true believer to pick up the gauntlet.

    What gauntlet?
    What are you talking about?

  390. Hoodathunk says:

I am talking about the gauntlet I have thrown, belac. The one I have tossed in the face of all of the folks who play here. I don’t do it as a troll and they know it. I throw the gauntlet as their equal.

    Come debate with me.

  391. belac says:

We are. See all above comments directed to you…

  392. Hoodathunk says:

as a statement, the idea I tossed out a gauntlet to my fellow progressives or anyone who might have a thought on the subject, and have received diddly in return I would say trolls keep up the pressure, they just like to trash you.

  393. Hoodathunk says:

and to those who think differently, I would rather be a troll who contests things than a goblin who agrees.

  394. dbadass says:

I could us a new pair of gauntlets. My current ones are quite old and no longer smell good

  395. Jane E. Schneider says:

Sorry, Hoodathunk, I confess that I am not well-enough informed to debate this subject with you.

  396. Hoodathunk says:

    nice co[o out Jane

  397. Hoodathunk says:

    Nice cop out Jane

  398. Hoodathunk says:

    but thanks for the thought

  399. Hoodathunk says:

Oh come one. Can’t you people come up with a better response?

  400. Zooey says:

    Wow.

    Hoodathunk,

I’ve been giving you the benefit of the doubt today because you seemed to have made sense in the past, and I’ve only been in and out today, so I really don’t know what the fuss is — but being a jerk to Jane is way out of line. What are you hoping to accomplish with that?

  401. belac says:

I am talking about the gauntlet I have thrown, belac. The one I have tossed in the face of all of the folks who play here. I don’t do it as a troll and they know it. I throw the gauntlet as their equal.

What idea? I notice you don’t include me in your equals but I’d still like to understand what exactly your talking about…

  402. belac says:

    dammit your= you’re

  403. Jane E. Schneider says:

I was serious, Hoodathunk, not mocking. History is not my strong suit, and my memory sucks anyway. It was not a cop-out.

  404. Hoodathunk says:

I’m sorry, I can’t play the Bushie game. Can’t you hammer me me?

  405. Jane E. Schneider says:

Thanks, Zooey. I, too, have agreed with many of Hoodathunk’s comments in the past, and I expect to do so in the future. However, I am woefully ignorant on many things, and the Civil War is one of them, despite The History Channel’s best efforts.

  406. ralph the wonder llama says:

Hoodathunk, that response to Jane was bullshit.

You’re starting to sound like a troll now — ignoring sound responses to your posts as if they didn’t exist, belittling other, well-intentioned posters who decline to take up a subject as “copping out”.

What are you looking for in a debate that belac, gummitch, Wayne, or ElBruce haven’t offered?

It seems you’re the only one who knows what you’re looking for. Good luck finding it.

  407. Hoodathunk says:

and the bottom line is, meet me with the whole thing.

  408. Hoodathunk says:

and no one has called me.

  409. ElBruce says:

    IALib Says:

Hopefully Roberts is better at leading the court than administering oaths.

    Not so much.

    .

    Hoodathunk Says:

as a statement, the idea I tossed out a gauntlet…

Huh? Before you were arguing that the Constitution forbids the Federal government from passing laws that restrict the states. I seem to have won that debate… So now you’re arguing that we’d be better off if the South had successfully seceded? Is that it?

OK, but this is your second one, which means you’re officially out of gauntlets. No more gauntlets for you!

I think most of us would agree that there are some things we’d like to have gone down differently in American history. But I’d the successful resolution of the North in the Civil War must go in the category of things that define us for the better. Had the South seceded, the we’d have two countries right now (if not more) – one with slavery, and another that turned its back on slavery rather than put an end to it. I don’t consider that to be a better outcome. I don’t believe that either of those nations could ever make any claim of moral authority for the rest of their existence if that had been the case.

If we believe that the ideals of America are a good thing, then we must view also view the outcome of the Civil War as good, since that is what helped shape a significant portion of them. In their better moments (such as today) our better politicians often talk of the crises that have put America at great risk and ultimately shaped it for the better. Chief among these is the Civil War.

  410. livelongandprosper says:

I don’t know the details of the subject at hand. From my perspective, The North won because, to paraphrase President Obama in his inauguration speech today, the South was on the wrong side.

  411. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Hoodathunk Says:
and the bottom line is, meet me with the whole thing.

    WTF?????

  412. belac says:

    Thank you ElBruce, well said.

  413. Zooey says:

I’m with ralph. I can’t make sense of what all this is about.

    Have fun, y’all.

  414. livelongandprosper says:

ElBruce says: If we believe that the ideals of America are a good thing, then we must view also view the outcome of the Civil War as good.

A few million dead, a hundred years before the “supposed responses” might have an impact, yah, I am delusional. I suppose that things only are important when they mean dollars in someone’s pocket.

  416. DNFP says:

My favorite battle from the Civil War:

    Antietam

“The bloodiest single day in American history with more than 6000 soldiers killed.”

Basically the final turning point in the Confederate defeat (their only hope in the end was that the British would intervene – what a bunch of un-American pseudo-patriots!)

And no, Lincoln was no REAL friend to the slaves. But he knew their freedom would be another major blow to the South’s desire to secede. Secession – yet another wimpy, un-American idea.

Stupid, inbred southerners (I should know, I’ve lived among them my whole life).

  417. belac says:

A few million dead, a hundred years before the “supposed responses” might have an impact

but it had an immediate impact- slavery was ended and the Union was preserved.

  418. Hoodathunk says:

the outcome of the Civil War as good.

  419. belac says:

the outcome of the Civil War as good.

This seems to be in opposition to everything you and J. Davis have been saying on this thread…

  420. wiley says:

A good friend just expressed his awe at the hideous troll posts at a site he was visiting. Guess we got the civil war trolls, he got the Planet of the Apes trolls. Jiminy effing Cricket, these people are sick.

  421. Hoodathunk says:

Belac, go back 150 years, stain your skin dark and have a good time. Then come forward and ask the people who worked with MLK if they believe you. Just a thought.

  422. gummitch says:

    Hoodathunk Says:

the outcome of the Civil War as good.

Have you been in the sauce? I ask this as someone who has occasionally gotten carried away and Posted While Drunk. I can tell there is a problem when I have to peer at the keys to figure out which one I want to strike — and then have to delete and try again.

Because what you’ve been writing for the last hour or two makes no sense at all. You’re demanding that people debate you, and when they do, demand that they debate you, and you have yet to actually state what it is you want debated — other than an apparent conviction that the South should have been allowed to go their merry way and destroy the fairly-new Republic.

I honestly don’t get this whole South Shall Rise Again argument. Invariably, the same people who pack their sons and daughters off to war, and paint themselves as super patriots and anti-war citizens as anti-American make up the group that thinks the South should have been able to pack up and leave whenever things didn’t go their way.

The South started a war because they lost an election, for god’s sake. The Republicans (ironically) won and the Southern states began to realize that the iron grip they’d held on the federal government was beginning to slip. The new government was not going to allow the South to keep spreading slavery as they destroyed their land with cotton and poor farming practices, so the Southern states threw a hissy fit and decided to leave. There’s nothing noble about that.

  423. ralph the wonder llama says:

Is it just me? Or is it like the Hoodathunk who began this thread was a cyborg, and now its circuitry is fried and the little alien at the controls inside is desperately struggling to hide the dysfunction?

  424. ElBruce says:

    Hoodathunk Says:

the outcome of the Civil War as good.

Just how much have you had to drink today? Be honest.

    .

    wiley Says:

…he got the Planet of the Apes trolls.

    Awesome! Wait – what?

  425. belac says:

Belac, go back 150 years, stain your skin dark and have a good time. Then come forward and ask the people who worked with MLK if they believe you. Just a thought.

    What?
I can guarantee that the people who worked with MLK would agree with me that the ending of Slavery was a good thing- I don’t need to time travel to tell you that.

  426. Hoodathunk says:

For those of you who have missed it, I have tusks that hang below my lower lip. I think Rush is going to let me become a member of the RNC. And I am a nasty troll who none of the usual troll haters has burned to the ground.

    Pardon me for whatever.,

  427. ralph the wonder llama says:

And our next contestant on “Grasping For Straws”…

    please welcome Lush Interior!

    (theme music)

  428. ralph the wonder llama says:

On second thought, it looks like the little alien has all he can do just to keep the Hoodathunk unit from crashing into furniture.

  429. ElBruce says:

    LushInterior Says:

    PBHO inauguration speach 1/20/09

“We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you.”

Sounds like the “cowboy” is coming out in PBHO.

Sounds to me like he’s talking about the Republicans.

  430. ralph the wonder llama says:

I don’t recall Lushy ever using the acronym PGWB to refer to Ex-President Bush, do you guys? Is this something from El Lushbo, er, I mean… El Rushbo?

  431. ElBruce says:

    Hoodathunk Says:

For those of you who have missed it, I have tusks that hang below my lower lip.

Like a walrus? Koo koo ka-choo.

    .

    Hoodathunk Says:

    Pardon me for whatever.,

No. But I’ll consider commuting your sentence after five years if you behave.

  432. Game of Life says:

    Lush,

Keith just announced that chimpy had over 1800 unused tickets to his little shyte in TX. And the tickets were free.

    HAHAHAHAHAHA

  433. ralph the wonder llama says:

Can anyone make a lick of sense out of what Hoodathunk is saying?

I think gummitch and ElBruce are on the right track. Reads like a coupla glasses of vino to me.

  434. belac says:

I’m hoping that Hoodathunk just got backed into a corner defending state’s rights and things kinda just spiraled out of control… but then at the end there, I dunno…

  435. wiley says:

Yes, Bruce. I hope the hospitals are stocking up on thorazine.

    Here is a sample:

“Something is wrong with my TV. Every channel is playing that Planet of the Apes episode where they take over the White House”.

    Followed by “amen”s and “I concur”s.

Perhaps the problem with the South is the way they are taught the Civil War leaves them with the impression that they lost on a technicality.

  436. Hoodathunk says:

    and Ralph, nice ditch.

  437. belac says:

    Hoodathunk Says: nice ditch

    then stop digging.

  438. had enough says:

During the inaugural parade,I was impressed with the talent and creativity of the lesbian and gay band association on cnn.com/live… that is until cnn cut their performance short to give an update as to where Bush was. Could not believe it and hope I can find a rerun on you tube.

  439. Hoodathunk says:

as a final farewell, I saw in several other posts where the big dogs here challenged the sock puppets. Repeatedly. And they were vindicated because no challenge was forthcoming.

I have challenged the titans of TP and not one has responded. Enjoy your position folks.

  440. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

I didn’t know that 2 million died during the Civil war, wow that’s news to me.

  441. gummitch says:

    Hoodathunk Says:

I have challenged the titans of TP and not one has responded. Enjoy your position folks.

Ah, the three monkeys. Now I get it. If you don’t read the responses, then they don’t exist.

  442. Hoodathunk says:

Oh come on, you guys can laugh at me. Toss out various resons why I am a sock puppet. ElBruce, Dr Matt, somebody can respond to me.

  443. ElBruce says:

Is there a Rosetta stone for this shit?

  444. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Hoodathunk Says:

Can you please explain how “no one has responded”? What do you consider the posts of the aforementioned belac, ElBruce, gummitch, Wayne A. Schneider, et al. if not responses?

Were you really interested in a debate?

Or were you just intent on proving that no one here was capable of debate,a nd so you have to insist that this is the case, in the face of much evidence to the contrary?

Can anyone make sense of this Hoodathunk post?

  445. dbadass says:

I suppose I could throw down the gauntlet of WTF is being yammered on about and why should I care?

  446. gummitch says:

    ElBruce Says:

Is there a Rosetta stone for this shit?

Check the medicine cabinet. There’s bound to be something in there.

  447. ralph the wonder llama says:

I notice, Lushy, you didn’t answer the question: did you use that particular construction for the former-president?

  448. dbadass says:

Hey I have an idea. Let’s go in circles for 3 straight days trying to prove atheism a religion. That sure was far more amusing than this weirdness..

  449. Tim Vaculik says:

Actually, I kinda felt sorry for President Obama – he undoubtedly had the oath of office memorized…

  450. Hoodathunk says:

    Hoodathunk Says:

Maybe none of you cares about this but I never wrote this. I have no idea where it came from but it was not from my fingers. If believing that a president may have run our country into a war that could have been avoided 140 years ago makes me a troll, ok. But I did not post this.

  451. Jane E. Schneider says:

What happened here? I’m not sure that I understand exactly what Hoodathunk wanted some to debate about, but I know that I would have been inadequate to the task. Hell, I’m probably the only person in the world who has never seen Ken Burns’ The Civil War. (Just saw him on Keith, otherwise I wouldn’t have even thought of it.)

    Um, Happy Inauguration Day?

  452. barfly says:

If republicans want to return to political relevance, they must first deal with their own attitudes regarding race.

The virulence of the criticism of Obama isn’t because he’s black. It’s because he’s half-white, and so personifies republicans’ innermost subconscious fear: diminuition of white America, through intermarriage and immigration. A black candidate would also have been attacked, make no mistake – but the fact that Obama is half-white made him an especially tempting target for republicans, because he represented the fruits of a bi-racial, liberal legacy which will shunt their offspring into the demographic minority, in the coming decades.

  453. Hoodathunk says:

I thought this was a decent site. This post proves me wrong. Anyone who wants to look back at my posts can see this. Somebody is afraid.

  454. ralph the wonder llama says:

Well, speaking for myself, Hoodathunk, I certainly care whether you wrote something under your name or not. If you were name-jacked, that makes a big difference in my understanding of who you are and what you mean.

It also helps explain the bizarre turn into incoherence that your posts seem to have taken in the last hour or so.

Is that the only post under your name that you didn’t author?

  455. Game of Life says:

    Lush,

Look how mooseyak aged since a few short months.

    HAHAHAHA

  456. Hoodathunk says:

Ralph, I will debate anything with you but that post is pure poison and and I would like to believe that anyone who has read my posts would wonder.

  457. ralph the wonder llama says:

Again, Hoodathunk, I ask, as straightforwardly as I can — is that one “poison” post the only comment that appears under your name that you didn’t author?

  458. livelongandprosper says:

Hoodathunk, I am with you on the shite post. This used to happen regularly a long time ago. This would be the first occurrence for a while. Please contact TP and tell them.

  459. Tim Vaculik says:

I caught portions of our new President’s speech from news clips, but what I REALLY liked was how the show I listen to interspersed his talk with President Ronald Reagan’s speech.

WOW! What a stark contrast between a man who understood that government wasn’t the answer to our country’s problems and one who thinks more government is always the answer!

It’s hard to fathom just how far we’ve fallen in just 20 odd years.

  460. citizen_pain says:

    Barfly @ 523:

Pretty succinct analysis. I’ve long said that the underlying cause of Republican/Conservative/Southern hatred towards anything different from them is their petrifying fear of becoming a minority.

Bottom line is America has changed, and you either roll with the punches or you get KO’d.

  461. Shayne says:

Talking about cherry picking history. On every slave ship about two thirds of the humans on board died before they reached their destination. Spain and England had already outlawed slave trading decades before the civil war.

Africa did fine as a tribal nation before white men decided to spread Christianity and agriculture that spread turned forest into ever increasing drought and desert.

Slaves had been rebelling for a very long time in the islands and either the slaves or the owners as well as property were routinely destroyed.

If we had let the south secede the slaves probably would have eventually freed themselves
