Limbaugh: I Fear Obama’s Repeal Of Bush-Era Secrecy Rules ‘Make It Easier’ To Hold Bush To Account

Earlier today, President Obama issued his first set of executive orders. One of these orders instructs “federal agencies to handle requests for information from the public and press under the Freedom of Information Act [FOIA] with an eye toward disclosure, not refusal.” The order reportedly returns to “pre-Bush administration policies” regarding FOIA.

In response to the “new standard of openness,” conservative talker Rush Limbaugh said that he fears that the more open FOIA rules will make it easier for Bush to be held to account for any misdeeds he committed as president:

LIMBAUGH: What I’m afraid of is that what Obama did with this executive order is actually make it easier for the media to go get Bush documents. Because you know Pelosi and some of the guys over in congress are talking about war crimes trials and charges and so forth. [...]

What I’m afraid of is what Obama’s done here is made the gathering of the information for this kind of stuff– This is not American. This is not America. This is not what America does. We don’t– This is Banana Republic kind of stuff.

With any luck, Limbaugh’s fears of an open and accountable government will be realized. When he entered office in 2001, President Bush heralded a new era of secrecy, directing then-Attorney General Ashcroft to issue new rules that essentially neutered FOIA:

[The Bush administration's 2001 FOIA] directive encouraged federal agencies to reject requests for documents if there was any legal basis to do so, promising that the Justice Department would defend them in court. It was a stark reversal of the policy set eight years earlier, when the Clinton administration told agencies to make records available whenever they could, even if the law provided a reason not to, so long as there was no ”foreseeable harm” from the release.

As a result of that directive, the government’s FOIA compliance rate deteriorated. By 2006, 2 in 5 FOIA requests were left unprocessed, the number of exceptions cited to justify withholding information increased 83 percent, and the Justice Department’s grant rate fell 70 percent.

While a number of influential figures, including Obama, have expressed some reluctance to pursue independent investigations of Bush administration officials or programs, Obama’s FOIA order may at least provide journalists and other interested parties with the tools they need to, as Limbaugh put it, “go get Bush documents.”

    His freaking out about this makes me wonder is there isn’t something in those “Bush documents” that will reveal such items as coordinating messages and perhaps payment in support of “enhanced interrogation” (torture) and other Bush doctrine draconian policies. And in one respect, Rush is right. Many of the actions over the last 8 years HAVE been notoriously similar to “banana republics.”

    All tax dollars shouldn’t even need FOIA. There should be a quarterly budget made public listing each agency and its expenses delineating where the money was spent. Exceptions for top secret can be made; but, there should be some way in which those expenditures could be monitored, too, keeping the best interests of the country in mind.

    Close to the end of Bush’s first term a Texas newspaper reported Laura filed for an 18 month divorce as all are public information. Yes the media and reporters didn’t say a word but the people of Texas knew it. Later came the National Enquier who had photos and information from White House/Hotel that Laura had an arugement with GW and walked out. The White House so it was a personal matter. Funny during Laura’s stay at the hotel a rich Texas come to see her. She quickly had to travel but while on an island the same rich Texasn showed up and spent time with Laura. Laura was reportedly speaking to Queen Elizabeth about her failed marraige when Bush was heard saying the Queen should mine her own business.

    Now I thought some reports could be a lie until no one told the paper not to print the pictures and information. Afther John Edwards we know a paper can get sued for false information. Remember Bush still has the Texas Ranch and surprise Laura has a new home. Laura said she was going to the new home right after leaving DC, while Bush announced he would be returning to the Ranch. Yes after bloggers started talking the White House said Laura misspoke. Time tells everything and really the bad preformance done by George/Laura was easy to see they were faking their marriage. It’s not as if Bush has ever told the truth in 8 years, lying comes naturel to the Bush Family.

The arguments that cons usually seem to make are typically of the form that the facts are precisely opposite to what the facts actually are.     My first FOIA request (which I knew would be pointless during the corrupt Bush years) will be to ask the DOJ exactly how many terrorist mailings of powder in envelopes there have been since late 2001.

    Someone at the DOJ/FBI must be keeping a running tally of how many have happened and to whom they were sent.

    In December 2001, I saw a CNN news blurb scroll across the bottom of the television screen for about twenty to thirty minutes that stated that the FBI was conducting 15,000+ investigations into terrorist-related mailings.

    Someone at the Bush DOJ/FBI must have “gotten to” CNN shortly after this appeared on-screen because it was yanked and never seen again.

    This 15,000+ investigation figure was reported by CNN just a month or two after the initial lethal anthrax mailings, so except for one investigation the rest must have been copycat terrorist mailings involving non-lethal powder sprinkled into envelopes. I wondered at the time if this 15,000+ figure referred to individual investigations into multiple mailings by a person or persons unknown, or did this figure refer to the total number of envelopes mailed.

    To put it simply, someone in the Bush administration, along with complicit lapdog corporate news media CEOs (print and broadcast), decided that what American citizens didn’t know about the magnitude of these terrorist mailings (and who was being targeted…primarily liberal organizations and individuals) was preferable to anyone finding out.

    Someone at the DOJ/FBI, though, must have compiled the statistics covering these copycat terrorist mailings (which have invariably required a response by authorities even if non-lethal powder spilled out of an opened envelope).

    Local news outlets have reported on these local incidents. One report several years ago was posted online after Al Gore’s office in Tennessee received one of these copycat terrorist mailings. One of the first responders was quoted saying that this terrorist incident was just one of 400 similar terrorist letter incidents that he had responded to in that area.

    The national news media, following the lead of the corrupt Bush administration, decided to keep a lid on any disclosures about the high incidence of copycat terrorist mailings over the past seven years, so we haven’t seen a single report detailing how many have actually occurred nor who have been the recipients of over 98 percent of these terrorist mailings (i.e. liberal organizations and individuals).

    I figure that the total number of terrorist envelopes mailed since late 2001 must by now be in the hundreds of thousands…and one can bet that with Democrats now in charge at the White House and in both houses of Congress that this figure will continue to rise, probably increasing exponentially.

    So, I’d like to know from the DOJ/FBI exactly how many copycat terrorist mailings have occurred as well as what success they’ve had in tracking down some of the radical right-wingers responsible for sending terrorist letters to some of their fellow U.S. citizens.

Most people here want to see those in the government of Israel held accountable for the needless death and destruction they have been imposing on innocent Gazan women and children in the final days of the Bush Administration. I think I can safely say that most of us do not (seriously) want to use violence to resolve disputes. There are peaceful ways to resolve differences, if you are willing to look for them. I, and many others, believe that some of the main actors in the conflicts of the Middle East do not want to see it this way. They wish to use violence to make their points. And many of us feel that this is wrong. And it is wrong of you to do the same.

    For the record, I do not approve of calls for violence against Bush and Cheney and all the other law-breakers of the past eight years. I do support bringing them to justice for their crimes. I believe that long prison sentences are a great disincentive to break the law, especially when holding an office of public trust. It helps us make sure we can trust you. And as soon as we start locking up the people responsible for bringing widespread death and destruction to the world, be they in Washington, DC, or Tel Aviv, Israel, the sooner our world can become a more peaceful place to live.

    Sarah Palin destroyed herself by opening her mouth and speaking. And, it seems, she continues to do so. If she wants to have any chance of getting the 2012 nomination, her best course would be to go back to Juneau, run Alaska for a while, learn some things about the US and the rest of the world, and STFU for a couple of years. If she can emerge as an intelligent-sounding woman, she might rehabilitate herself.

    Samuel J. Wurzelbacher destroyed himself from the moment he stepped in front of the media and lied about who he was and why it was so important to question Candidate Obama about the rumors he heard about the tax plan. That exchange lasted several minutes, but I bet you heard only one thing – “spread the wealth”, and now your panties are in a twist. Since then, he has pretty much made a fool of himself every time he opened his mouth in front of reporters. I do not understand why you consider reporting what somebodty says as destroying them.

    And George W. Bush destroyed himself the moment he decided to abandon his oath of office, and use illegal and unconstitutional methods to carry out his agenda, which was not the one he ran on, and which was never approved by the country. Bush alone came up with the pre-emptive, first-strike policy known as the “Bush Doctrine”. (You know, it might have helped Sarah Palin to be aware of that, bt she clearly wasn’t.) Had he run on a platform calling for that, he never would have gotten elected. And don’t try to say that the threat from terrorists wasn’t as severe when he was running for president, because you guys have been saying that Clinton was the one who failed to stop 9/11. (That’s an absolute lie, BTW.) You can’t have it both ways. If the threat wasn’t severe enough for Bush to campaign on what would become his Bush Doctrine, then how can you blame Clinton for how far terrorism went eight months into Bush’s first term? And if the threat was that severe, then why didn’t Bush say it was what he wanted to do? And why would he have not wanted to do that if he knew while campaigning that the threat was severe enough? You guys are trying to have it both ways on defending Bush and his “I kept us safe since Sept 12, 2001″ strategy. Make that “I unconstitutionally kept us safe” and we might believe it.

    Perhaps, instead of the word “DESTROYED”, you meant the word “EXPOSED”.

    The Wall Street Journal evacuated its newsroom Wednesday after the delivery of about 13 envelopes containing an unidentified powder, a spokeswoman said.

    Police and a hazardous materials team from the fire department were investigating at the business daily’s New York headquarters, spokeswoman Ashley Huston told AFP.

    “There were approximately 13 white envelopes with suspicious powder delivered to the general office today. They were addressed to several general executives. Some of the envelopes reached the offices of the recipient and some did not,” Huston said.

    Two floors housing the newsroom, the editorial offices, and executive offices were evacuated, Huston said.

    Journalists “are all meeting right now to figure out about working from home,” she said.

    Huston said that a couple of the envelopes were opened before the alarm was raised. They were all postmarked from the southern state of Tennessee.

    In 2001 letters containing anthrax killed five people in the United States and spread panic.

    Since then, police and fire officers have been called out on thousands of occasions to investigate suspicious mailings — most of them harmless.
