Foxman: George Mitchell is too ‘fair’ and ‘even-handed’ to serve as Middle East envoy.

thumb_george_mitchell.jpgThe media is reporting that former Sen. George Mitchell, who handled the Northern Ireland peace process, is being eyed by the Obama administration to be a top diplomatic envoy to the Middle East. In 2001, Mitchell produced a report on the Middle East which recommended that Israel freeze all its settlement activities. Without a freeze, a cessation of violence would be “particularly hard to sustain,” he argued. While Mitchell’s impending appointment is earning a great deal of praise, the Anti-Defamation League’s Abe Foxman complains the diplomat is too fair and balanced for the post:

“Sen. Mitchell is fair. He’s been meticulously even-handed,” said Abraham Foxman, national director of the Anti-Defamation League. “But the fact is, American policy in the Middle East hasn’t been ‘even handed’ — it has been supportive of Israel when it felt Israel needed critical U.S. support.”

“So I’m concerned,” Foxman continued. “I’m not sure the situation requires that kind of approach in the Middle East.”

  1. ralph the wonder llama says:

Wow. Foxman doesn’t even try to fool himself into thinking that blindly supporting everything israel does is “even-handed”.

Instead he sees even-handedness as inherently unhelpful to Israel, and thus, a bad thing.

Oy vey. Do these people even listen to themselves?

  2. Leftside Annie says:

    Wow. “Fair and even-handed”????

    That’s TERRIBLE!! Can’t have *that*!!!!

Jebus. What the flak is WRONG with these morons??

  3. ralph the wonder llama says:

And LameTroll_Dan shows up to voice his opposition to “even-handedness”.

    Nice work, LameTroll_Dan.

  8. katy says:

    credibiliTy… of course

  9. spencers mom says:

So Foxman is saying that the possibility of being fair and even-handed should not be an aspiration? That signalling to the Arab world that the US intends to maintain the same biased policies that have led to so much violence is the way to go?

The Middle East is aware that we “carry a big stick” with respect to Israel but the time has come to listen to all sides.

    PEACE

    ENOUGH! with the trool!

does EVERYbody have to stroke this idjit???

  13. tarazan says:

Foxman would like to see the one sided Dennis Ross who after spending over ten years as a US Middle East envoy produced nothing because he was acting as Israel’s attorney during those years isntead of being fair and balanced envoy who represents what’s best for USA interests instead.

  14. ElBruce says:

This is too ridiculous even to make fun of.

  15. Bozo The Neoclown says:

So, essentially, the anti-defamation league would love to see someone appointed who would allow the united states to be israel’s bobblyheaded puppet?

here’s a refreshing suggestion, why not appoint someone who will hold the government of israel’s feet to the fire over their policies instead of letting them play the perpetual victim?

  16. stateofthedivision says:

LTdan & Joe the Plumber, why not look at Obama’s words on Israel? From the aparkling new White House website:

Ensure a Strong U.S.-Israel Partnership: Barack Obama and Joe Biden strongly support the U.S.-Israel relationship, and believe that our first and incontrovertible commitment in the Middle East must be to the security of Israel, America’s strongest ally in the region. They support this closeness, and have stated that the United States will never distance itself from Israel.

Support Israel’s Right to Self Defense: During the July 2006 Lebanon war, Barack Obama stood up strongly for Israel’s right to defend itself from Hezbollah raids and rocket attacks, cosponsoring a Senate resolution against Iran and Syria’s involvement in the war, and insisting that Israel should not be pressured into a ceasefire that did not deal with the threat of Hezbollah missiles. He and Joe Biden believe strongly in Israel’s right to protect its citizens.

Support Foreign Assistance to Israel: Barack Obama and Joe Biden have consistently supported foreign assistance to Israel. They defend and support the annual foreign aid package that involves both military and economic assistance to Israel and have advocated increased foreign aid budgets to ensure that these funding priorities are met. They have called for continuing U.S. cooperation with Israel in the development of missile defense systems.

    Nothing about Israel’s nuclear weapons.

    Israel, the democracy that”

    1. Approved the use of .22 caliber ammunition to break up protests
    2. Banned all media from covering Israel’s razing of Gaza.
    3. Banned two Arab political parties from upcoming elections
    4. Where an influential member of the Knesset said to treat elected Arab members like Hamas.

Those are from the last week or two. A scroll like list exists of other undemocratic acts. The U.S. ignores it all.

Hamas athletic supporter, a simple yes or no will do:

are you the type of person who believes democracy is a good thing only when your party gets elected?

you do realise one of the drawbacks of democracy is the leaders elected aren’t always the best representation for the benefit of the populice. Example: the last eight years of our government.

  28. Bozo The Neoclown says:

“They support Gay Rights, Women rights and Freedom of religion.”

Hamas supports these issues about as feverently as the modern repukelican party. nice try assclown.

According to your hero, FORMER president gwb, there’s a democracy in Iraq

Bush ponders how democracy will survive in Iraq

Mon Jan 12, 10:11 am ET
AP – President George W. Bush speaks during a news conference, Monday, Jan. 12, 2009, in the pressroom at …

WASHINGTON – President Bush says he isn’t certain whether democracy will survive in Iraq.
Summing up his legacy as president, Bush told a news conference he did the right thing in sending an additional 30,000 American troops there to lower the level of daily violence and to stabilize life in the wartorn country.
Bush told reporters that, “The question is, in the long run, will this democracy survive, and that’s going to be a question for future presidents.”
The president has come under harsh criticism for the Iraq war, now in its sixth year. There have been over 4,000 U.S. deaths since the invasion and toppling of Saddam Hussein in 2003.

  33. ElBruce says:

Headline: Abe Foxman of the ADL claims that Israel is unfair.

This is great. The chief criticism of Obama appointees is that they’re “even-handed.” Next we’re going to hear complaints that they’re too intelligent, qualified and reasonable. Keep it coming, wingnuts.

Oh, and “Hamas Supporter?” Flaggy flaggy.

  34. gummitch says:

    That’s rich.

Gawd, how can repugs be so dumb?

obama = the death of israel”

    Same old song and dance.

  46. Jackie says:

Mitchell should be fair. Israel/US plan went very well. Israel admitted they used fire bombs on citizens and of course the Cluster bombs to kill as many people as possible. All this was to last until Obama took office. Things would have been different if McCain/Palin has won. Israel knew Obama wouldn’t support murder of woman/children so now that Palestine is destroyed Israel is happy. Israel looks for more support from the US to finish off Palestine at lease with the Law Makers who are the cells. President Obama’s first call to a Foreign Leader was to Abbas of Palestine oops not Israel.

These fools make fun of peace and hope.

  52. Leftside Annie says:

Well, now, crap, y’all – we can’t (we just can’t!) have someone in there who is willing to be fair with both sides — all the Palestinians aren’t dead yet. Sheeeit! What’s wrong with you guys??

(The above was brought to you by Snarktastic Productions, Inc.)

  53. winddancer says:

It seems to me that the Israeli government’s real objective is to drive the Palestinians completely out of Israel (formerly known as Palestine). The massive damage in Gaza, now that we are able to get some photos out is beyond belief. The Gazans suffered 1,300 deaths, 100 times that of Israel. Of those, at least 50 percent were civilians, and of those, 50% were children. Meanwhile, in Israel, 3 civilians were killed and 10 soldiers. The “good” Palestine in the West Bank, under Fatah, is a ghetto. With illegal settlements cutting traditional villages apart from each other, with olive trees and Palestinian homes bulldozed to make room for more settlers, with excellent roads and highways built for the settlers, that Palestinians are NOT ALLOWED to drive on, and are severely punished if they do so. In a much earlier post, under a different name, I stated that while I once supported Israel wholeheartedly, over the years I have lost respect for it. And because I see them now behaving, in many respects, like the ones who put many of their ancestors in ghettos, took their rights away, stole their property and killed THEM back in Germany, and Poland, and other areas invaded by a government that had no respect for the lives of others, and considered them sub-human. We, the U.S., do no favors for Israel by continuing to support their behavior. Ultimately, it can only increase hatred toward Israel and toward us as well, and in fact, such blind support is becoming a clear danger to our own national security.

  54. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Only a madman would say that a man known for being fair and even-handed would be the wrong person to bring peace to a centuries-old conflict. So, only someone biased and unfair could solve the rpoblem?

The first step toward solving the centuries-old conflict in the Middle East is to stop listening to people who are not looking for a fair and even-handed solution.

  55. curious says:

Foxman wants nothing that does not have a gun or a bomb as a persuader. He worries that Mitchell or anyone can do more by talk and reason then Bush and his wars.

The Republicans want war and chaos. This is all they know or understand. Peace is an alien concept.

  56. WillowOrchid says:

It seems obvious that Israel does not want peace, they want the Palestinians land, which “God” gave them. Too bad he didn’t give them southern New Mexico.

  57. Winski says:

Foxman AND the ADL in this cases comes across looking/sounding worse than they already are! This is LUNACY.. MAYBE they could have whizzed in Chimpy’s ear on this kind of issue but he’s in texas with his thumb up his own ass NOT IN DC !!

So Foxman – BITE ME !

  58. ElBruce says:

“So I’m concerned,” Foxman continued. “I’m not sure the situation requires that kind of approach in the Middle East.”

Really? How has the alternative been working out so far? Doing well over there right now, hmmm?

Mitchell sounds perfect. The current Israeli/Palestinian situation is directly analogous to Northern Ireland on so many levels.

I call reading stuff like this a “McEnroe Moment”.
    YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!

  62. colindale says:

er … who is this Loxman fella? Although living in the UK, I thought I had a handle on all the important elected people in the States, but we never heard of a ‘Loxman‘ here. Is he some guy that works for an Israeli bagel charity or something? If so, he needs to know that the Israeli embassies in NY, London and Paris etc are posting hundreds of propaganda stuff all over the web – so he doesn’t really have to exercise himself unduly. It’s all all taken care of – so they think.

  63. escapefrombushistan says:

Abe Foxman is a foreign agent in the service of Israel. He should be deported post haste to that country which is a boil on the ass of the earth.

  64. danielet says:

At a Jerusalem Conference on how scary it is to be a Jew in the world– at the very time when Israeli takns were smashing innocent Palestinians in Jenin– Abe Foxman, head of the ANTI-DEFAMATION LEAGUE begged forgiveness for not fighting for Zionism because his group was too busy fighting against “ASSIMILATION” of Jews in Amweica. At the funeral of Dr. Goldstein– the man who machine gunned the Jersusalem Mosque, killing and wounding many innocent men and boys at prayer– the rabbi leading the service declared that one Jewish finger nail is worth a hundred thousand Arab lives. This is the racist operative term that Livni, Olmert and Brarak thoughlessly associated with in their repeat of the Warsaw Ghetto, massacring innocents in a surrounded and strangled Gaza when a few HAMAS decided to fight back with “garbage-can rockets.” Foxman typifies those who can only bark for a living accusing Americans who fight for their freedoms of anti-Semitism but never replacing them on the combat line. Let us not forget the motivation of these professional witch hunters. They seek to imprison American Jews in mental prison of fear so they don’t “assimilate” with their fellow Americans. But that these loudmouths speak for no one is now clear. While they slandered Obama as an anti-US terrorist Muslim, a proportion of the Jewish American voters as large as that of blacks voted for Obama. US Jews are Americans first. Any Zionist attempt to stampede them in fear to Israel by fueling a backfire of anti-Semitism in an economically depressed America will fail. Mitchell’s wise and fair assessments on the Mideast were silenced during the Bush-neocon years….NOT by Jews, for the neocons speak for no one but their small clique. Mitchell will replace fraud with truth and destruction with construction. Obama kept his word by putting such a reputable man to expose any attempt to rule Israel by such racist sentiments as quoted above. Jews are as American as apple pie and want MEANINGFUL DIALOGUE on the Mideast just like everyone else. Do not be fooled by the howls of this plump and loud professional promoter of fear and slander. Let the MEANINGFUL DIALOGUE on Gaza begin and disregard such balls of hot air, who speaks for no one. JEWS ARE LOYAL AMERICANS WHO WANT MEANINGFUL DIALOGUE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE.

  65. dickdata42 says:

What “House of Roberts” said, 1000 times over.

  66. leonel says:

    1. US cannot be fair and open minded because it is a christian-Jewish country. 2. Look up “Jewish end days” in Wikipedia, they have 240 years or so to get their dreams settled, sometime before then, they will have their Messiah and they will disarm themselves and live in peace. 3. Therefore: look for Israel to remain in limbo or purgatory until then. Obama is smart enough not to get involved too closely in this presently lose-lose situation. Help the Palestinians and hold down the killing.
