Earlier today, President Obama signed an executive order directing the closure of the U.S. military prison at Gitmo. Asked during a news conference for his reaction to the order, House Minority Leader John Boehner made it clear that he wasn’t even sure why anyone would want to close the prison in the first place. After all, he explained, the detainees there get “more comforts than a lot of Americans get”:
QUESTION: A lot of members of Congress on both sides of the aisle say that Guantanamo Bay has just given the United States a black eye on the world stage. Isn’t that part of the problem, too? [...]
BOEHNER: I don’t know that there’s a terrorist treated better anywhere in the world than what has happened at Guantanamo. It is — we have spent hundreds of millions of dollars to build a facility that has more comforts than a lot of Americans get.
Boehner has not been paying attention. Just last week, Susan Crawford, the top Bush administration official in charge of deciding whether to prosecute Gitmo detainees, revealed that she had concluded that Mohammed al-Qahtani was tortured by the U.S. military and consequently could not be prosecuted. As the Washington Post reported:
“For 160 days his only contact was with the interrogators,” said Crawford, who personally reviewed Qahtani’s interrogation records and other military documents. … Qahtani “was forced to wear a woman’s bra and had a thong placed on his head during the course of his interrogation” and “was told that his mother and sister were whores.” With a leash tied to his chains, he was led around the room “and forced to perform a series of dog tricks,” the report shows.
The Post also reported that al-Qahtani’s treatment was so extreme he had to be hospitalized twice and at one point his heart rate dropped to 35 beats per minute. In 2007, an FBI report found that detainees “were chained hand and foot in a fetal position to the floor for 18 hours or more, urinating and defecating on themselves.” Similarly, in 2004, the Red Cross reported “cruel, inhumane and degrading” treatment which was approaching “torture.”
Boehner’s conception of a Club Med-style prison camp at Gitmo is pure fantasy. He should spend less time listening to Rush Limbaugh and more time focusing on the actual realities of detainee treatment and abuse.
Boehner’s Alternate Reality: Gitmo Detainees Get ‘More Comforts Than A Lot Of Americans Get’»
– - Actually, the rest of that statement was edited out. It read, “…due to Republican economic, social and legal policies of the last 8 years.”
January 22nd, 2009 at 3:43 pmGood lord. The Boner is truly delusional, ain’t he??
January 22nd, 2009 at 3:46 pmLOL! OMG! These guys are certifibly nuts. How do these sub-humans get elected? The righties are going nuts. Limpballs, Hannity, Malkin… They are freaking out. Kind of sad. (Not!)

January 22nd, 2009 at 3:51 pmBoehner’s an idiot.
He’s got no more chimpy checks to give out on the floor of the house and he’s feels lonely…
If he keeps this up like Cornyn in the Senate, both will soon get the message: Chimpy isn’t in charge anymore. You’re not in charge anymore. Sit down and shut up before you get squashed like the bug you are..!!!
January 22nd, 2009 at 3:51 pmSweeeeet… Stay classy, Republicans. We’ll see ya in 2010.
I’m not sure whether he’s being completely delusional or just really doesn’t care about how bad things are for “a lot of Americans.” Or some of both. Either way, I’ll take it.

You know, when they were the majority party and this stuff got passed on uncritically, most people I knew just shrugged in despair, like “it sucks but nobody can do anything about it.” They don’t have that cover of the illusion of invulnerability any more. Making ridiculous statements actually hurts them more, now.
I hope they never stop.
January 22nd, 2009 at 3:53 pmHe’s just drunk again.
January 22nd, 2009 at 3:54 pmYes, I was just thinking the other day as I was kneeling on the ground, my hands cuffed behind my back and a hood over my head, trained attack dog patroling unseen, that those guys at Gitmo have it so much better than so many like me here in America. At least those guys get to wear those sunny, upbeat orange jumpsuits.

January 22nd, 2009 at 4:09 pmFocusing on the salacious bra and panty aspects does not really do justice to the reality of our treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay and other prisons. Those antics are reprehensible and show the general lack of discipline which extended from the Commander-in-Chief all the way down to Specialist England. Inmates in United States custody have been tortured to death, permanently injured, or become psychologically deranged all in some cases without any evidence of wrongdoing. This is a national tragedy and sunlight must be shined on these abuses.
January 22nd, 2009 at 4:10 pmThe fact is if Bush had his way completely, most of us in the US would be treated the same way as the detainees. I am an adult, so you will notice I have not made fun of this mans name. Let’s see, Bowler, Bofer, Bonor, Bonar. Oh Well!
As long as there are cameras and someone stupid enough to interview these Republican morons, they will speak. They will speak when common sense should say to them, “shut the hell up before people realize how stupid and shallow you really are.”
Sorry about that run on sentence.

What an idiot Boehner is…

Bingo. If there are lots of Americans worse off than these prisoners, people like Boner share a huge amount of responsibility for perpetuating their condition. But he doesn’t care about those Americans any more than he cares about the internees.
January 22nd, 2009 at 4:17 pmMight I suggest the what most are missing, that from time to time the public finds out that memebers of Congres might be paying money to have a “women or some strong man dressed as a Marine tie me up, urinate on me, and make me wear women’s clothing, and shout at me etc etc etc”
So it is perfectly logical some in DC and perhaps some posters might not find the treatment down at GITMO all that bad.. and there is the ref to “Better them some in USA” etc. But being a kindly sort, I will let your own ideas dance about the motive of that one. So it seems some might actually be jealous of such treatments, or at least at their level of such things.. more so if they pay for it and from what has been out there.. such things do happen,,, sometimes more, sometimes less, even at airports?
So be kind, as it may be envy no more then upset that some gettin for free what some pay for..Kind of a GITMO welfare program for the kinky in their eyes..and other body parts.
But then we all know that of course those we elected are above such.. if it their turn on top?

Boner was born 50 years too late. No doubt he would have been a loyal, devoted Nazi party member were he graced with the opportunity of being born into a world and a country where ideals like his flourished. And I’m not kidding here. Some may think this sort of comparison over the top but unfortunately its not. Our fathers fought his kind in WWII, but they keep coming back.

January 22nd, 2009 at 4:23 pm
That’s an excellent question. The problem is that in order to answer it, we have to know the truth about what happened. Only when we know what crimes were committed will we be able to see if they are still prosecutable. If it turns out that there were crimes committed (hardly an “if”) but that the statute of limitations ran out, then we need to amend the law to extend or eliminate the statute of limitations where federal officials are concerned. There is no excuse for letting a corrupt federal official go free because they managed to stall for three or four years and prevent us from learning that they even committed a crime.

January 22nd, 2009 at 4:49 pmThe conditions of confinement could include 3 15 course meals a day, prepared by a French trained chef, served on fine china to the purported “enemy combatants” held in gold encrusted cells, with diamond locks and emerald toilets which flush with finely scented perfumes . . . that still would not take away the following: every person there has been there for years, all but a handful have never been charged with anything, and if Boehner and his crew continue to get their way) will be held there indefinitely without ever being charged. This though everyone (but Cheney apparently) KNOWS that many people held there are not and were not ever “the worst of the worst.” That’s why so many have been released.

But saying we have all these “terrorists” in Gitmo supports the we kept America safe (since 9/11) narrative. I think that’s what the Republican party has to protect. Now he’s claiming that if we move the terrosists into our US prison system, that they’ll recruit new terrorists. It’s hard to argue with such delusional people.
Now he’s claiming that the Army Field Manual is known by “every single one” of the terrosists that the CIA picks up, and they know how to defeat those methods. He is also claiming that Obama should keep the interrogation methods “approved by Bush”. Apparently he is unaware that Bush committed War Crimes with those interrogation techniques.
“No one wants to follow rules approved by the President and the Attorney General”. (He’s getting really delusional now.)
He’s also claiming we shouldn’t investigate Bush because “we don’t go back and look into Clinton.” Hey, Bond, you wad, Clinton didn’t commit War Crimes!
TP, you might want to get ready to put up this idiot’s appearance, happening right now on hardball.

We should let all of the prisoners that remain in Prison Gitmo go free, with credit for time served. Haven’t they been tortured enough? The only problem that we had with the Taliban regime in the time of Clinton and bush 2 was that they wouldn’t let our oil companies build pipelines across their territory. I guess in the mindset of the neo-cons like Bush 2 and liberal imperialists like Obama, that maekes them “terrorists.”
We (USA) have been terrorizing the residents of many third world countries for over a century now. Since 1898 in the Philippine Islands, when we murdered hundreds of thousands of residents there to enforce our imperial will.

January 22nd, 2009 at 7:08 pmBoehner should take serious heat for his remarks. Contrary to the evidence, he’s not Glenn Beck who can just shoot Firt Amendment swill — he’s an important elected official who has a responsibility to be truthful to the American people. If there are Americans who suffer less comfort than the Gitmo prisoners do, I want Boehner to point them out & explain why he isn’t moving heaven & earth to help them.

January 22nd, 2009 at 8:52 pmI would honestly like people like Boener (long list!) to spend even one week in Gitmo, under the conditions that exist there, and treated like suspected terrorists. One thinks you are a little confused. The Republicans only gave away 350 billion. The other 350 billion will be handled in a more open and professional manner by Obama. This money will go to help main street rather than wall street.
January 22nd, 2009 at 11:02 pmMore comforts than some american citizens get.
Not quite a shining endorsement of how we treat our citizens.
January 22nd, 2009 at 11:14 pmLet us raise the bar:
I propose that Boehner AND HIS FAMILY including kids, grandkids, etc. take a trip to Gitmo for at least a year.
While there, be subject to the techniques of the Bush Cabal.
They could have family “swimming lessons” as they go around the room and waterboard them one by one.
January 22nd, 2009 at 11:15 pmAnd right wingers like Boehner made it possible.
Does Boehner want to send Americans to Gitmo to make things better?
Now he knows quite well that Americans will never see the actual (real)day to day treatment in Gitmo.
January 23rd, 2009 at 3:39 amDoesn’t boner know the conditions at Gitmo are now of little concern? Maybe conditions are great, that’s nice, whatever. He should be in there helping to sort out the innocent from the guilty before more time is lost. We’re only talking about a couple hundred innocent people maybe, that could be freed to wherever on some kind of parole.
January 23rd, 2009 at 3:59 amThe republican “Gitmo is great” mindset assumes, always, that every person in there is “the worst of the worst” — because Bush and Cheney SAID so. That makes the issue easier for them to think about: it is acceptable to them because they assume guilt of every person detained there.
While boner’s assessment (and not just his — we have heard this cannard before — wasn’t Cheney touting this line a few years back?) is a less than ringing endorsement of the state of American citizens, isn’t this also complete hypocricy? I thought the important thing was that we don’t “serve them cookies and milk”, and that harsh methods are necessary.
But according to Boner (and many others who have argued this “Gitmo has great treatment” angle), isn’t that exactly what he is trying to paint this as? That, gee, these poor brown people from countries worse off than us being detained at Gitmo, and who are the worst terrorists in the world, are being treated like American royalty while in their captivity, at the American taxpayer’s expense.
So — which is it? Are they treated with “cookies and milk” or are they being treated harshly like the republicans believe they deserve? because the “cookies and milk” approach does not require the Gitmo facility. The torture approach does. And torture trumps cookies and milk (so, if they are tortured and THEN given cookies and milk — they were still tortured).
January 23rd, 2009 at 7:25 amBoehner supports the coddling of suspected terrorists.
Boehner wants to nationalize ClubMed
Boehner wants to move thousands of hard-working Americans to Gitmo so that can have a better life
Boehner wants to move the detainees currently housed in Gitmo to his home district in Ohio so that his district’s comfort level is increased
Boehner is a blowhard. Period.
January 23rd, 2009 at 9:05 amI have always felt that people in JAIL should be treated well, because they are people awaiting trial. In an actual justice system, people in jail are not considered criminals, because no crime has been proven. They are being detained to prevent flight, and (in the case of violent criminals) against the POSSIBILITY of violence against the public.
January 23rd, 2009 at 10:03 amGuantanamo was not a prison, but a jail. NO ONE AT GUANTANAMO IS A CRIMINAL, because no one has been convicted of a crime in a court of law–and most have not even been tried by the Stalinist show trial kangaroo ‘courts’ set up by the Bush junta.
The fact that anything other than confinement occurs at a jail is a crime in itself.
Silly fascists – let us all call them out!
Expose them for what they are – ignorant, easily maniopulated by hate – 21st century Nazis – no difference!
January 23rd, 2009 at 11:14 amLook on the bright side. One need not have to construe Boehner’s statements as proof he’s either a clueless idiot or a mendacious prevaricator. This can be taken as Boehner’s epiphany: he now supports universal healthcare and nutrition assistance for all Americans.
January 23rd, 2009 at 12:20 pmFor ANYONE out there that thinks that treating detainees like this is ok, you need to get your heads out of your @$$ and think for a change!
January 23rd, 2009 at 1:48 pmIf this kind of treatment was done to one of our guys, all of the neo-con right wing wingnuts would be swinging from the rafters and screaming bloody murder.
We can not do this to others and NOT expect the same treatment to our people.
rddaos Says:
Are morons like YOU ignorant and soulless? Why yes you are. Got any evidence all those at Gitmo are jihadis? Why no you dont. You can show yourself out in disgrace moron.
January 23rd, 2009 at 2:07 pmGuantanamo Bay might be a good solution to housing these Republican War Criminals after the republic is restored and all the war crimes trials are held. Spandau is no more so this might be a good idea.
January 23rd, 2009 at 11:47 pmConsidering how many foreclosures there have been and how far south the economy’s gone, I’d say that Boehner’s not very far off the mark.
