Glenn Beck freaks out about the missing Bible at Obama’s do-over swearing in.

Today on his new Fox News show, Glenn Beck panicked about the re-do oath of office President Obama took last night, because Obama did not place his hand on a Bible. “I checked. We have never had a president sworn into office without a Bible,” he intoned dramatically. Watch it:

Beck is simply wrong. As Slate recently reported, official records kept by the Architect of the Capitol show that Teddy Roosevelt did not use a Bible in 1901; and Lyndon Johnson is rumored to have used “a Catholic missal aboard Air Force One after Kennedy’s assassination.” According to his own letters, John Quincy Adams placed his hand on a constitutional law book rather than the Bible. Beck’s vaunted devotion to research must have taken a dive when he moved from CNN to Fox.

  4. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Since the Constitution specifically prohibits a religious test to become president, there is no constitutional requirement that a Bible be used at the swearing in. That is a matter of personal choice for the incoming president. What’s Beck gonna do if Rep Keith Ellison ever becomes president?

  5. Jim Wolf359 says:

Of course, Fox doesn’t do research. If they checked their facts before they ever said anything, they would have a lot of dead air going out.

Take an oath on the McDonald’s Value Menu for all I care…
    _____________________________________________________________

Since the idea of taking an oath while swearing on some kind of document is that the document should have personal meaning for the oath-taker, that could work. Are we sure that the recent McDonald’s-loving president didn’t do just that?

Personally, I find swearing on ANYTHING to be going against the directive Jesus Christ gave us in the Sermon on the Mount. And my Muslim friends tell me the Quran gives similar direction. So I find all the religious posturing silly at best, and sinful at worst.

So we claim Bush wasn’t a legitmate president because he didn’t actually win the election and was selected by a partisan Supreme Court, and they have… no Bible?

    And they’re running with that?

  80. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Actually Constitutionally only the oath is required. The Bible is not.

The Bible is definitely not required, and can never be mandated. As for the oath itself, people are making the argument that the 20th Amendment says that he became president at 12 noon on January 20, oath or no oath. Personally, I disagree. I think the 20th only changed what date his term starts on. It did not remove the requirement that the oath be taken.

Without the oath that the president will support and defend the constitution, the constitution is meaningless.

I mean, come one. Most of Tina Fey’s lines on SNL came verbatim from Sarah ranscripts. You can’t get much more “comedian” than that.

  91. ralph the wonder llama says:

So Lushy thinks that an Ivy league grad who eschews big-money offers in Manhattan to work as a low-paid community organizer in Chicago ghettos is the moral and practical equivalent of an alcoholic C-student who was turned down by the U of Texas Law School and then put in charge of an oil company, which he promptly drove into the ground.

Okay, Lushy, I think we know where your head is at now. Thanks for sharing.

But you still didn’t explain what is so bad about a community organizer.

  102. KayInMaine says:

George Bush was SELECTED by the US Supreme Court in 2001 and then had his Oil Cartel steal the 2004 election, so technically, George Bush was never officially the president of the United States regardless if he took the oath or swore on a bible.

then again Becky Boy, we’ve never had a president to had to retake the oath because it was flubbed the first time by a preening closet queen of a chief justice who isnt bright enough to memorize multiple sentences or remember weird foreign named concepts integral to our constitution like “habeas corpus”. i really really wish roberts would let this stupidity leak into his sex life and thereby get caught trying to solicit anonymous gay sex in a mens bathroom. he’s got the same gleam in his eye that senator “wide stance” craig had, I’d bet money on it..

  116. prizepatrol says:

I have never understood why people allow themselves to be influenced by people of such low intellect and achievement as Glenn Beck. Furthermore, I don’t understand why anyone gets their panties in a wad about anything he says. However, I guess he is good for a laugh in this instance.

  117. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Ah, THERE you are, Lushy…

    So, no answer?

About what’s so bad about being a community organizer?

  118. Ozymandias says:

Wow epic fail. Not only is he throwing a tantrum over nothing, but he cant even get a simple historical fact right. He’ll fit right into the Fox News crowd

  119. Mathazar says:

I think Beck is focussing on the wrong missing item.

WHERE THE HELL IS THE FLAG LAPEL PIN?!!!

  120. ralph the wonder llama says:

Lushy, the problem I have with your assessment is that you seem to think that “community organizer” is all Obama has ever done in his life.

I agree, community organizing by itself does not qualify one for the presidency.

However, it must be acknowledged that community organizing is an excellent background for one just out of college, and can help inform one’s worldview in ways that, for instance, going straight to law school will never do for one.

Of course, if one spends some time as a low-paid community organizer, and then goes on to, say, Harvard law School and finishes first in his class and is chosen as president of the Law Review, and from there goes on to work as a lawyer and to teach constitutional law at one of the most prestigious law schools in the nation, and THEN goes on to win election to state office and then the US Senate, building a solid reputation for intellect, judgment and integrity along the way, I’d say that such an individual might make a fine president.

So I’m not sure why right-wingers feel the urge to throw around “community organizer” as if it were some kind of insult.

Is it because that’s the worst thing you can say about the man? If so, I’d say that’s a pretty good indication of his character.

  121. ralph the wonder llama says:

So, Lushy… you still haven’t explained why you seemed to use “community organizer” as an epithet.

You’ve admitted that there’s nothing bad about the position, and you’ve even admitted that you’ve never known or even heard of one before. So how did it become a sort of “go-to” insult for you people? I’m confused.

A couple other points… if you’re not a right-winger, you certainly sound a lot like one when you post, so maybe look at that, mmkay?

And as far as waiting for government to do anything for us, you fall prey to another popular right-wing — oops — uh, non-partisan misconception that we are sitting on our hands, waiting for government to fix everything. Contrary to the cartoonized version of progressives that many right wi– er, opposition commenters here seem to hold, progressives are active in our communities and also – ahem – work for our livings.

We do, however, expect our government to be competent and to handle the problems for which it is best suited, with efficiency and clarity of vision. And when Democrats are in power, that ideal seems closer to being realized than it does when Republicans are in charge. Although, to be fair, Republicans don’t set the bar very high in that regard.

So perhaps you’re not a right-winger. But you seem to hold many of the same preconceived notions, ideals and assumptions as most right-wingers who hang out here (including that old chestnut, “I got mine, I don’t care about anyone else”).

So you might think about making friends with some right-wingers. Maybe you’ll find yourself an ideological home.

    Best of luck.

  122. The Republic of Stupidity says:

    LushInterior Says:

… I think most of you will soon be in trouble if you are waiting for government to do anything for you…….time to take responsibility for your selves as Obama will start telling the masses.
    _______

See… that’s the problem w/ you. You constantly make that assumption – that we’re all just sitting around waiting for handouts. I haven’t seen you make ONE serious point since you stumbled into the place months ago. Just the same snide, sneering, generic put downs over and over again, which is why I NEVER take you seriously.

I’ve been working for a living my whole F-in’ life. The bits and pieces I pick up from other regular posters here would indicate many of them are hard-working folks who simply have – ***GASP*** – “liberal” sensibilities.

That doesn’t translate into “Welfare handouts, Please!”, no matter what the fat drug addict screams everyday.

You embarrass yourself w/ your endless, one-dimensional stereotyping, Lush. You don’t have the FOGGIEST idea of who we are, because you NEVER engage us in a meaningful conversation. Just generalizations.

We, on the other hand, have a very good idea of who you are… and Gawd, is it pointless and boring.

  123. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Damn, TRoS.

This is the second time today I’ve had to acknowledge that someone said pretty much the same thing that I said, but better.

    Yo, Lushy! What TRoS said!

  124. ElBruce says:

Doesn’t matter anyway. The 20th Amendment supercedes Article 2 (hence “amendment”). The 20th Amendment states that Obama “assumes the office” on noon, 1/20. The Oath of Office is done more out of a sign of respect for the Constitution rather than in accordance with it.

  125. Robt says:

For a FREAK like Glenn Beck,

“Freaking out ” is what he does.

  126. Razor_Boy says:

Why any oath?….it didn’t mean a damn thing to Bush.

  127. MoonElf says:

Obama is still doing better than Bush. Bush thought he put his hand on the Constitution and swore to uphold the Bible. I’d feel better if religion was kept out of all of it.

  128. barfly says:

Ok I guess thats good news for the Intel and Microsoft employees just layed off. 35,000 citi bank employees will soon be needing shovels and hammers so there might be a few Home Depot positions open up….

It’s called re-education, comrade. Some will be doing the first honest work in their capitalism-driven lives. Isn’t this conservative-created workers’ paradise a wonder to behold?

Or would you rather they become black-market criminals, instead?

  129. zxbe says:

Interesting how the right-wingers suddenly care about the constitution. Not surprisingly, it still doesn’t appear that any of them have actually read it.

  130. X.Ecks.X says:

Beck needs to start drinking again… at least get a prescription for Zoloft.

  131. Leftside Annie says:

    Re 145 and 146…

    Ralphie? TRoS?

I worship at your feet, guys. Keep ‘em coming.

    Your fan,

    ~A

  132. Davey says:

“Is there no bible in the White House?”

    wink-wink-nudge-nudge

More “secret Muslim” fearmongering from Beck.

    Here’s a more apt question:
Is there no honor in Glenn Beck?

  133. EugeneDebs says:

    J.Davis Says:

Wayne,I made an effort at dicussion. At least I tried to understand those that hate me. Like I said before,we don’t belong in the same country together.Do you agree?
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I dont agree. We dont HAVE to agree on everything. Like Jefferson said. Timid men prefer the quiet of despotism to the boisterous sea of liberty. IF our boisterous sea of too tough for ya. I suggest you get the hell out.

  134. EugeneDebs says:

    LushMORON Says:

Lush as usual shows just how ignorant and pathetic he is. I think a psychatrist could write a book on his strange obsession with seeking pity from us compassionate liberals. He is like the legless begger that shows off his lack of legs for money except he showcases his ignorance and lack of a brain for pity. He makes lame stabs at humor but only comess up with incredibly stupid. Humiliating himself is actually his aim. He KNOWS he is far too stupid to enter an actual discussion so he tosses what he thinks in his vastly substandard brain are quips. They are only inane stupidity since that is all he is capable of but he thinks he deserves a pat on the head.

We ALL pity you LushMoron. We all get how sadly pathetic and ignorant you are. Since you have already established your astonishing stupidity and are capable of nothing else why do you punish yourself with constant humiliation? Have you no sense of shame? No self respect? My GOD you are the most pathetic creature I have ever encountered.

  135. EugeneDebs says:

Whatsamatter LushMoron you are just another of the many pitiful hiveminders without a brain.

  136. EugeneDebs says:

    J.Davis Says:

Now I know the progressive movement. You have confirmed my fears.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Oh please you dont know anything. You came in here whining and begging us to hate you for some odd reason. As Zooey pointed out. You dont even EXIST in our universe beyond a few inane comments on a message board. Get over yourself. If you want a discussion SAY something and stop the pitiful whining it is pathetic

  137. EugeneDebs says:

My GOD LushMoron you are such an ignorant loaf. I am begging you to stop being such a stupid clownshow. Even the electrons you waste are embarased for you at this point.

  138. EugeneDebs says:

    LushInterior Says:

You couldnt fix a sandcastle. You are stupid and you are a punk. The stupidest most pathetic punk the internet has ever seen. You are a retarded troll with the IQ of dryer lint. So stupid you dont even know how stupid you are. What I need is a break from feeling pity for you for every post you ever make. Do the world a favor, go to your garage and take a nap in your 78 Toyota and leave the motor running

  139. bonncaruso says:

And I see that Glenn Beck’s lobotomy was a raging success…

  140. EugeneDebs says:

    ralph the wonder llama Says:

So, Lushy… you still haven’t explained why you seemed to use “community organizer” as an epithet.

You’ve admitted that there’s nothing bad about the position, and you’ve even admitted that you’ve never known or even heard of one before. So how did it become a sort of “go-to” insult for you people? I’m confused.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

That is easy. Things like Lush have no ability to think for themselves. They know they are too stupid. So they tune into the screechmonkey of their choice, my guess for Lush considering how utterly stupid he is would be Rushing down the drug addiction mountain, to let THEM do their thinking for them. He heard Sir Oxymoron use it that way and was stupid enough to find it clever and too brainwashed to even WONDER why it would even make sense much less be funny. So he did what propaganda parrots do. He regurgitated it all over the first liberal he could find. It is the reason for being for a hivemind moron like Lush.

  141. Gregor Samsa says:

So what if there was no Bible? Obama was elected President, not Pope.

The presidential oath should be a legal, secular procedure free of any religious undertones.

There shouldn’t be any religious test to hold any public office.

Oh, and Beck is an idiot. But we knew that already.

  142. Shin Gallon says:

I’d rather the oath be required to be taken with a copy of the Constitution. It would be both more fitting and more, daresay, Constitutional?

  143. Barbara Santee says:

There is a picture of LBJ being sworn in on Air Force One, and his hand is on a book that looks suspiciously like a Bible. If it’s not a Bible, does anyone know what it is? See the picture at:
    http://www.mcmahanphoto.com/lj100.html.

  144. villageatheist says:

Glenn Beck is an idiot. He’d probably have thrown a hissy fit for it not being a Mormon bible as well.
