McConnell: Employee Free Choice Act will ‘fundamentally harm America and Europeanize America.’

Today in a press conference at the National Press Club, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) attacked “narrow interest groups” in Washington, such as labor unions. Specifically, he went after the Employee Free Choice Act:

I came here to speak about bi-partisanship, but this is an issue on which there will be no bi-partisanship. … This is an outrageous proposal. It will fundamentally harm America and Europeanize America and we will have a big political fight over this.

McConnell also claimed that “rank and file” union members aren’t “clamoring” for the Employee Free Choice Act to be passed. Watch it:

The Wonk Room’s Pat Garofalo noted that to back up his “facts,” McConnell trotted out statistics that he learned from former Labor Secretary Elaine Chao…who is also his wife. More on McConnell’s appearance here.

  14. ralph the wonder llama says:

Can someone help me out on this Employee Free Choice Act? Because labor isn’t doing a very good job of explaining it, from my perspective. I even saw a piece on Bill Moyers’ Journal that left me scratching my head.

Basically, the Act does away with a secret ballot among employees to form a union, if more than half of the employees sign a card indicating their support for a union. Do I have that right?

Because, I gotta say, the right-wingers seem to be winning the propaganda war on this one so far, again, from my perspective.

But if my understanding of the provisions of the Act is correct, then it’s a no-brainer. If more than half sign cards indicating they support a union, then the “secret ballot” that the Right is so concerned about (yeah, they’re soooo concerned about the rights of working people) is merely a formality.

  15. Uncle Ho says:

Yeah, McConnell, God forbid that we IMPROVE our standards of living in America to European levels. We might even imitate Sweden! EEEEEKKK!

  16. ElBruce says:

You tell ‘em, rhf. You tell the world.

I’d like to see a chart tracking per-capita GDP in real (inflation-adjusted) dollars vs. union membership in America over the 20th century. It seems like all of the best economic times enjoyed by more Americans are intricately correlated with the strength of unions during those times.

Republicans hate unions because Republicans hate America – or at least 99% of Americans.

Say, isn’t this an admission by McConnell that the EFCA would actually strengthen the likelihood of workers freely choosing to form unions? I thought their argument was to lie and say that it would remove the secret ballot option, thereby removing employee choice.

  17. blogenfreude says:

Can’t somebody please out Miss McConnell already so we can get him off the stage?

  18. Uncle Ho says:

ralph, as I understand it, all that needs to happen is for a simple majority of employees is to sign a card that they want a union, and it’s a done deal.

Yes, it would do away with secret ballots, but that has been SO corrupted by employers using threats, intimidation, etc, that system is now worthless.

So feel free to add that to the name…

    Long John b-OOOOOOOOOOOhner.

  20. ElBruce says:

    ralph the wonder llama Says:

Can someone help me out on this Employee Free Choice Act? Because labor isn’t doing a very good job of explaining it, from my perspective.

The secret ballots would still be an option. They would also have the option to form unions basically by petition.

Here’s the difference: the way it is now, management can schedule an employee meeting, give a bunch of speeches about how unions suck and they’ll have to declare bankruptcy if one is formed, and then have the employees immediately vote (secretly) on whether to form a union. The signing card system would allow workers to vote for/against at their own leisure, without being under the watchful eye of management pressure and intimidation.

Obviously, employers like it better the way it is now, when they have total control over the conditions surrounding the vote.

  21. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

McConnell should take himself and his family back to his ancestoral home because his being here is “Europeanizing” America.

  22. Shayne says:

Mitch doesn’t have to worry. Everybody in his state that wants to work goes to Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. All he’s got left are the super rich and the white welfare types. Virtually every household has somebody collecting food stamps and public aid or Social Security disability. And they don’t want to hear about people making a living wage. It will just make them feel bad about themselves.

  23. McWars says:

A higher standard of living? Oh no, republicans to the rescue!

Of note, I swung by the AFL-CIO page and was further convinced by their extensive argument in favor of EFCA and unions in general. They provide real-life examples of people harmed w/o union representation and people spared the bullet because of union representation. There is so much right about unions that isn’t out there to counteract the entrenched myths.

  24. Buckie Boy says:

The Free choice makes it illegal for companies to threaten employees for wanting a union, that is what repukes don’t want, as told to them by their corporate masters.

They also include rules pushed by business, and adopted by Bush Labor Secretary Elaine Chao, to make it tougher for workers to take family and medical leave and to let their bosses demand workers’ medical records’

Trolls, the companies can raise prices for any number of reasons. They executives can raise prices to give themselves a raise, Exxon can raise prices to give themselves record profits. Companies are possibly using tax payer dollars, or TARP, to pay for mergers, clearing away as much competition as possible for price strangleholds.

It’s certainly no worse to pay a little more for increasing the cost of living of millions of workers than GOP-adored regressive sales taxes. I also think it’s funny you trolls talk about product prices that may or may not increase, when your party would like to replace the income tax with a GIANT SALES TAX.

Where was he when hundreds of thousands, possibly millions died in Iraq?

    Oh, those were all terrorists.

  97. Marie says:

Aww, does this mean we have to go back to freedom fries?

  98. The Republic of Stupidity says:

    ElBruce Says:

Of course not. As liberals, we just sit around in our parents basements eating Cheetos and cash those sweeet gubmint checks paid for by the Hard Working Americans (TM) in the Republican party, who we force to pay all the taxes. They’re the ones who are screwed.
    _____________

Hmmm… it sounds as though you’re reading that out of some sort of instruction manual. Is it their side’s, or OURS?

“Cause if it’s our side’s, WOOHOO – how do I get me a copy?

BTW, if you’re working on a Mac, you can get that cool little ™ thingy w/ the Option/Alt key and the 2 key. ™ ™ ™… see?

  99. Marie says:

I think Democrats must grab microphones, call press conferences, and otherwise blast these anti-American, and anti-workers with truth and facts.
Why does the Repug opposition always get the spotlight? When Dems were the opposition, they were kept in the dark, doors were locked on them, and the media paid them no attention. But Republican opposition are treated as if they were still in power.
Hmm, I guess they are: compliant media and complacent Dems.

  100. tombaker says:

So, “all the people who work for paychecks” = “a narrow interest”. Really? How narrow? 200 million people or so?

wtf, Mr. McConnell, would constitute “a broad interest”???

  101. EugeneDebs says:

    Dynamoron

I dont know if republicans are evil but if you are any indication they sure are stupid. SKWWWAAAAKKk insert Limborg talking point here SKKKWWWWWAAAKKKK. Make a business shut down for 30 days? Did you just pull that out of your lower torso or did the Oxymoron instruct you to believe it? You wingnuts just say the stupidest things

  102. EugeneDebs says:

Apparantly LushMoron you have given up all pretences to sanity. I guess you figured you have milked the pity you for your stupidity thing as far as it can go and now you are going for the pity you because you are insane. You are just a stupid brainwashed moron who repeats the ignorance you have been programed with by the Limborg. You always knew you were too stupid to actually discuss anything so you gave up on even ATTEMPTING to be funny as pathetic as that was and turned full aggressive ignorance. I guess a pathetic ignorant trolls gotta do what a pathetic ignorant trolls gotta do and this act isnt any sadder or more pathetic than your last act. It is time for your nap. In you car, running in your garage. Save our gene pool from the corruption of your stupidity and immediatly raise the colletive IQ of the planet. Take that nap

  103. EugeneDebs says:

    LushInterior Says:

My oh my how things change…….
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Some things dont change. YOU for instance are still as stupid, pitiful and pathetic as ever

  104. EugeneDebs says:

LushMoron. Thanks for giving our hearts a break. It is so sad to read your pathetic posts and be reminded that there are unfortunate morons like you that are so ignorant and pathetic

  105. EugeneDebs says:

I already told you LushMoron. You dont USE a colostomy bag you ARE a walking colostomy bag.

  106. Anonymouse says:

I wonder if Mr. McConnell has ever had a real job.

  107. EugeneDebs says:

NO DynaMoron Obama isnt as incompetent and ignorant as Bush he isnt going to realease all the prisoners at Gitmo you ignorant cretin he is going to try the ones that need a trail and let go the ones we should have let go long ago. Not even the Pentagon is sayin all those realeased have returned to fighting the key is being smart enough to know the difference. Now since President Gump was so stupid he tortured some of them we may NOT be able to bring to trial some we should but it doesnt matter since morons like you will blame Obama for all of Gumps stupid mistakes anyway and the SANE 70% of Americans are through buying the rightwing idiocy that makes up your delusional fantasies. Take a pill, nothing can be done about your stupidity but at least it might calm you down.

  108. EugeneDebs says:

LushMoron. NO ONE takes you seriously. Feeling the natural pity we do for you is NOT the same thing as taking you seriously.

  109. Bonnie says:

As an American Indian, this country has already been “Europeanized”.

  110. ucsbclassics53 says:

    ucsbclassics53 Says:

Where was he when hundreds of thousands, possibly millions died in Iraq?

    Oh, those were all terrorists.

Oh yeah, I must not have gotten that memo…

  111. Buckie Boy says:

As a Native American I agree with Bonnie.

  112. Hoodathunk says:

All of this whining reminds me of an incident that took place when I was in high school. They brought in a bunch of frogs and baby chicks for use in Biology class and a small group of ‘concerned citizens’ felt this was unjust and cruel so one afternoon they snuck back into school and ‘liberated’ the poor creatures. Exactly why they thought releasing all those critters on the third floor was going to be beneficial for them…well, let’s be kind and say their enthusiasm got the better of their judgment.

The next day the principle, who had only started in the job a month or so before, called a group of students together for a talk. (It was remarkable how accurate his gathering was.) He then presented his position to the young band of eco-terrorists.

“I don’t know exactly what happened here last night but I intend to find out. Until I do, I want you all to know that it will not happen again.”

Then the group was given the task of both cleaning up the mess and tending the new batch of ‘volunteers’ with the pointed suggestion to all present to look for assistance among concerned fellow students.

Do you have any idea of the number of places a chick can get to in a high school?

  113. ElBruce says:

I like how EugeneDebs needs seven semi-consecutive comments just to tell Dynamo he’s dumb. Heh.

    .

    The Republic of Stupidity Says:

Hmmm… it sounds as though you’re reading that out of some sort of instruction manual. Is it their side’s, or OURS?

“Cause if it’s our side’s, WOOHOO – how do I get me a copy?

You sign up for your monthly gubmint checks through an easter egg on change dot gov. As a liberal, I’m sure you’ll be able to find it. Republicans can’t locate it ‘cuz they all type with their foreheads.

    .

    The Republic of Stupidity Says:

BTW, if you’re working on a Mac, you can get that cool little ™ thingy w/ the Option/Alt key and the 2 key. ™ ™ ™… see?

    Nope, I’m on a PC. I ain’t that much of a commie.

    .

    Hoodathunk Says:

Do you have any idea of the number of places a chick can get to in a high school?

My head exploded once I reached 147 possible punchlines for that question.

  114. Hoodathunk says:

You have a twisted mind, ElBruce. I suppose I should have said ‘baby’ chicks.

BTW, it was lots more than 147. The librarian still hasn’t recovered or forgiven.

  115. greenpagan says:

The Employee Free Choice Act will fundamentally harm the Neo-Confederacy and Europeanize America? Whaaa…??? And that’s supposed to be a bad thing?

    ====

  116. pluege says:

    universal healthcare
    retirement security
    guaranteed education thru college
starting employment with 6 weeks vacation

I think we could use a little more of that Europeanizing.

  117. kuvasz says:

Screw McConnell, let’s push the Overton Window and call for a repeal of Taft Hartley. The Employee Free Choice Act is a pigmy compared the repeal of Taft Hartley.

  118. shoeless says:

    Europeanize?

Screw you Mitch. Your eyes look like piss too.

  119. Mathazar says:

    Mary, #104, sorry, I just couldn’t think of a good b.s. story.
My best guess is I inadvertently touched those keys as I posted. As I read it myself I thought WTF ? Would you believe I actually went back and reread coment #9 ? I wonder if anyone
    else did as well. Duuuuh

  120. Hesperion says:

Republican ALWAYS use national crises to their best advantage. When there is a terrorist attack they use the opportunity to tear down the Constitution and Bill of Rights and start imperial wars. When there is a financial crisis they use the opportunity to blame the American workers and smash the Unions. They have always been opposed to the American common people but at least they are consistent about it.

  121. shoeless says:

    glezzery Says:

Bush has made all the tough decisions

When did they change the definition of “tough” to mean wrong?

  122. EugeneDebs says:

    glezzery Says:

Employee Free Choice Act! What a strange name for an act that decreases workers rights and choices.

Had to be named by a Lib unable to name it properly and honestly.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Leave it to a con to be too stupid to know what he is talking about. The card check bill does NOT decrease worker choice. You are a liar and a fool.

  123. EugeneDebs says:

    glezzery Says:

Wow what an explosion of ignorance. Bush made all the WRONG choices. We didnt use anything but his own stupidity and incompetence as a REASON not exucuse to attack the WORST president of my lifetime by FAR. Your delusional fantasies do not become reality just because you post them

  124. christopher wiwi says:

Hey Mitch, what is wrong with wanting to unionize? For the last 28 years wages have fallen as profits have gone through the roof, intimidation from management is running rampant, management is spending tons of money on union busting and our middle class way of life is in the shitter because of trickle down supply side economics that hasn`t worked, so now it`s time to give it a try our way, with good paying jobs, protectionist trade that works for all invovled and just go away Mitch and take your labor hating Reich Wingers with you. Also his wife was on the board for Northwest Airlines where we are currently going through unionizing with Delta labor since we merged and Delta is spending some serious cash on union busting instead of spending it on fuel hedging and other issues to save money and turn a profit.People educate yourselves about the EFCA.

  125. Old Goat says:

Ya know, the whole Gitmo detainee thing is rehash. Come on thugs, ya gotta have something with more substance than that. It’s like the baby boy who finds his own willie and clutches it until he cries. He just can’t let go of it.

See kids, ya gotta get your news from different sources and find the common thread in all. The detainees aren’t gonna be released to run free like gazelles, or republican cronies. They are going to receive something that I know is alien to you… it’s called “due process of law”. And while I know it’s a big word, you may want to also look up something called “Habeas Corpus”.

Time to relearnify… (have to phrase that in a language you can understandificate).

  126. roscoe says:

If this guy is the poster boy for the repug. party, they are in trouble. This cracker couldn’t even pussy slap Lindsey Graham.

  127. Mosaic says:

Let’s be clear. We WANT to Europeanize America, that means a higher standard of living for all Americans. Regressives like this moron want to keep us in the stone age of peasant workers working for the man, the top 1%. That is bulls@it and we shouldn’t stand for it anymore.

  128. drew3rd says:

As a union glazier I want to say that I agree with Mr McConnell and that, anecdotally speaking, he’s right. I know that at our Union, District 21, Local 252, the vast majority of the men don’t want to have their votes go public. We sometimes disagree with management and we don’t want them banging on our door when we vote against their agenda. Try avoiding “get out the vote” drives. This would be much worse than that.

  129. drew3rd says:

Mosaic, which country has a higher standard of living? You need to travel more. The rest of the world blows. It’s all old and broken. Toilets suck, electric is basically rationed and the comfort level of everything goes way down once you leave the U.S.

  130. LiberalVoter says:

drew3rd, your generalization is flat out wrong. You need to get out more. I have traveled extensively and while there are places around the world that would fit what you mention, there are a lot of those kind of places right here in the US as well. I have been to some very nice places in other countries and I am not talking about luxury resorts but everyday places.

  131. stateofthedivision says:

Old Goat, #146. Thanks for the laugh!
