Obama tells GOP: Don’t listen to Rush Limbaugh.

Today, President Obama met with congressional leaders from both parties to discuss his economic recovery and reinvestment program, though Republicans did not appear to be interested in compromise. According to the New York Post, Obama told the GOP members at the meeting that they have to stop listening to Rush Limbaugh if they wanted to accomplish anything:

rush.jpgYou can’t just listen to Rush Limbaugh and get things done,” he told top GOP leaders, whom he had invited to the White House to discuss his nearly $1 trillion stimulus package.

One White House official confirmed the comment but said he was simply trying to make a larger point about bipartisan efforts.

When Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) complained about the spending plan, Obama shot back, “I won,” adding, “I will trump you on that.”

Whinney, when a woman says that she “would like to have X’s baby,” she generally means it as a COMPLIMENT to the man in question. Of course, this would be difficult for you to comprehend, as I doubt that ANY woman would want to spawn something with such a venomous mysogynist as you seem to be.

Now it’s made because he not only didn’t get the nod but he’s up for re election and not looking to good back home. It seems the rich people of Cantor district admire the young black President. Cantor had problems with his wife’s involvment in the banking shady deals and kick back money. I know Cantor felt like the lowest of the low when a bimbo like Sarah was picked. With all the wealthy support of his friends he couldn’t buy the White House like Bush did. Cantor was Israel’s hope for the Oval Office as the money would keep flowing to Israel by way of President Cantor, that plan failed too.

    #27:

Congratulations on posting in a non-buttsecks thread, RaptureReady. This is so chock full of gooey deliciousness, I’ve got to spew another post just to counteract your every other word…

    RaptureReady Says:

How arrogant of you Mr. President. We already know your political status, but people believe that you should sincerely think before making critical decisions. For example, Guantanamo, how can you close the base within a year, when you do not have a plan to to incarcerate/prosecute these terrorists.

It’s called setting achievable goals, instead of refusing to have “timetables” limiting what’s expected of you.

    .

67 have already returned to the battlefield.

Citation, please? It’s my understanding that in the majority of those cases, “returned to the battlefield” included those who spoke to the press about their experience or wrote an op-ed. Did you know that and lie to us, or were you actually unaware of that fact? I’m actually really curious.

    .

Why should government make our children and their children pay. Don’t you care about inflation, as well?

Inflation and deficits are two different things. It would be nice if the deficit hadn’t been already run up so much by Bush, but it’s necessary now.

    .

Mr. President, Government is not the solution. Remove capital gains taxes for the private sector, so jobs can be created.

Reducing taxes that are primarily paid for by the rich is what’s been tried for the last eight years. Obviously, that hasn’t worked. In fact, it’s made things much worse The solution is not more of the same.

    .

Bolster our manufacturing base. The reason why we continue to lose money is because of the loss of our manufacturing base. Realistically, most products are not made in America. We import everything. We must close the financial gap through selling American made products to Americans, and exporting these products to other nations.

You may be surprised to hear this, but Obama is already in complete agreement with you on this point.

    .

    How about re-instituting tariffs, too.

You mean fair trade instead of free trade? Great idea!

    .

Before approving this bailout, we must find out what happened to the initial bailout to decide what is left, who does not need it and who needs to return our hard earned money

“A President should be able to do more than one thing at the same time.”

I agree that the initial bailout should be reevaluated and invoices issued to the unworthy. But that doesn’t mean putting a hold of the stimulus package, which by the way isn’t a bailout.

    .

We must eliminate illegal immigration, to ensure that our states do not waste money on services for non-Americans. They broke our sovereign laws.

When I see an average American-born citizen work as hard as the average illegal immigrant, then I may believe that they constitute a drain on our economy. But from all the evidence I’ve seen, they provide a massive surplus of economic benefit, overall.

In short: pick me 3 acres of lettuce in a day, and then we’ll talk.

    .

Socialism will not save us. History has proven this. LISTEN!

Partisan catchphrases won’t save us either. THINK!

    RR,

If you are such a devout follower of Jesus Christ, then why do you pejoratively refer to President Obama as “The Messiah”? Are you belittling the term? Or being blasphemous?

I don’t know too many liberal posters who call Obama “The Messaiah”. I have seen a lot of conservative hate-mongers call him that.

  90. ralph the wonder llama says:

Daryll, I have a question for you. I’m puzzled by your recent about-face with regard to the Office of the President.

Just last month, in response to a TPer criticizing president Bush, you had this to say:

    RaptureReady Says:
You should thank and praise our President. Our you a real American?

    December 14th, 2008 at 2:22 pm

Now this evening you say something as disrespectful as:

    RaptureReady Says:
How arrogant of you Mr. President.

    and

    RaptureReady Says:
By the way, MR. PRESIDENT, you stated that you were against lobbyist, and you created an executive order on this issue. Why are appointing William Lynn, who is a high level Raytheon principal and lobbyist to the DOD. Is this “DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO” action right? IT’S HYPOCRITICAL. YOU WILL NEVER GAIN BI-PARTISANSHIP IN THIS TYPE OF MANNER.

    So what gives, Daryll?

Is it okay to criticize the President if he’s a Democrat, but treasonous if he’s a Republican?

That’s what your comments sound like you’re saying.

You are attacking Obama for jaywalking and stood by Bush while he was comitting high crime like LYING to take us to war. You have no credibility here. As I recall, it was right-wing media people (like Fox News Channel, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Michele malkin) who started claiming that we on the lreft were calling Obama the “New Messiah”. Talk about arrogant!

But Daryll, we know why you think you can call our President “The Messiah”, even if your assumptions are shallow, inaccurate and informed more by your own repressed psychology than by any observation of the world around you.

But what you fail to address are Wayne’s other, more pertinent questions, namely:

don’t you think Jesus would be upset with you (for calling the President “The Messiah”)?

    and

Just how seriously are we supposed to accept that you truly believe your faith?

I think you’ll agree that these are serious questions.

  110. ucsbclassics53 says:

Cherrypicking and MANIPULATINGintelligence is considered lying…more here…and here

But since Bush did it, and since he is a Man of God, then was it God’s will to have him lie the country to war?

  111. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Proof that VP Cheney influenced the IG to give Haliburton a no bid contract, por favor. Also, once again, President Bush did not lie to Americans about Iraq. That is a liberal myth. He made his decision based on intelligence gathered by Mr. Tenet’s agency. At that time, there was a rumor around that Sadaam was a severe threat. YES WE CAN!

WRONG! Bush did lie. Bush was relying on information that other intelligence agencies around the world described at aa “useless” And he knew it was useless because our own intelligence people said so. Only an ignorant fool believes that invasion of Iraq was either legal or justified. That, RR, is a fact.

  112. Gregor Samsa says:

    RaptureReady babbles incoherently:
At that time, there was a rumor around the world that Sadaam was a severe threat.

But that was not what we were told back then. Iraq was not invaded based on a rumor.

Bush repeated, time and again, that there was no doubt Iraq possessed WMD and that Hussein had ties to terrorist groups who would use said WMD. Both claims were shown to be untrue.

    Please try to keep up.

Hi, RR. I’ve got your answers right here.

Yes. It’s perfectly fair of him to make a Cabinet appointment, and then issue an order to the people who work for him restricting who they can hire. Rules he imposes on his subordinates don’t have to apply to him. He is the POTUS, after all.

The “lobbyist problem” has much more to do with lobbyists entrenched at all government levels. He can allow one vetted and conciously selected ex-lobbyist if he wants to, but he probably shouldn’t pass off that decision.

Also, bipartisanship has nothing to do with it.

Obama is purposely allowing a total of one ex-lobbyist in the entire executive branch. Please do tell me how a Republican is in any standing to complain about that.

    .

    RaptureReady Says:

Didn’t the Messiah vote to allow illegal wire tapping?

Why do you people keep calling him that? Isn’t that blasphemy? Yes, I disagree with him over the FISA vote. I don’t see how you are in a position to criticize him over that, though.

    .

    RaptureReady Says:

I will try this again. DID THE MESSIAH SUPPORT WIRETAPPING IN FRONT OF THE SENATE? YES OR NO?

Actually, no. The new FISA bill doesn’t actually “support wiretapping.” It’s a little more complicated than that. Go read it.

Of course Hannity would love this kind of PR, but he’s not allowed off the Fox farm, so he’ll never say the truly outlandish stuff necessary to get a presidential raspberry. He’ll hint, and suggest, but Rush will bellow it out, between dispeptic belches. Obama shot himself in the foot by mentioning Limbaugh. Now anything Limbaugh says about Obama will be made as a statement of political equals, in his listeners’ ears. And in the ears of the freekin’ MSM, fer godsakes. They’ll be parroting anything Rush says, now that Obama has given them license.

    And besides…

The right wingers of America are always touting how we Americans should be able to keep our money, so when President Obama says he wants to give money to the working class of our nation, the right wingers go ape shit!

So which is it? Do you wingers want breaks on your taxes so you can get some extra money at the end of the year? Do you want a check written to you that you don’t have to pay back to help out your ‘family’s economy’ right now? Or do you want the Banks, the Treasury, and Big Business to get the money (only to lay off people, keep the money, and then send our jobs overseas) and do nothing?

You make me sick, because you’re forgetting why over 2 million jobs were lost just last year alone and why we’re on the fast track to the bottom! We can thank the last administration who did nothing to quell the plummet, but instead who spent their days talking about Terri Schiavo when they controlled all 3 branches of government, and then when the Democrats took over, they spent their days blocking everything while George Bush either vetoed or didn’t sign the pieces of legislation into law!

By giving Americans some money, they’ll spend it and when they spend it, the companies do better. Honestly, there is no one way to save what the fascist capitalists did for years, but at least Barack is saying he thinks it’s the American people who should get SOME money, instead of giving it all to the top tier of this country (who also own the larger businesses) who will only cut more jobs!

  186. backup says:

Congratulations to progressives on Obama’s presidential victory and historic inauguration. I did not vote for President Obama, but I support him, trust him and believe he is the right person to deal with today’s challenging environment. I hope he can deliver on his vision, despite my reservations about increased government.

I understand the sentiment that because Obama won the election and Democrats enjoy a more substantial majority in the Congress that they can ‘trump’ Republicans. That’s how it goes.

I also understand President Obama (and a majority of the American people) wanting to foster a new era of bipartisanship.

But, if you consider the definition of bipartisanship:

marked by or involving cooperation, agreement, and compromise between two major political parties

How do you reconcile Obama’s call for bipartisanship and the comment: “I won. I will trump you on that.”

That doesn’t sound like cooperation, agreement or compromise.

I personally don’t find the New York Post that credible. And question whether Obama even made the statement. Or at least the context. But, if it is true, I think the American people will see the inconsistency sooner or later.

If Obama and the Congressional Democratic leadership want to use their mandate to force their will over objections of Republicans, that’s their right. Possibly their obligation. But, if that’s the intention, why not do it without the disingenuous calls for bipartisanship.

I’m trying to do the math: “a century and a half.” That would take us back to Civil War times. How “enduring” was our alliance with Japan when they bombed Pearl Harbor? during the Bataan Death March?

  192. backup says:

    Random.

It didn’t work for Bush. It was either disingenuous or maybe not possible. I believe the idea of bipartisanship may not be possible. Someone has to make the decisions. Americans have elected Democrats to do it. The answer is probably for Democrats to make the partisan decisions they were elected for.

But, if Obama is serious about trying to be bipartisan (as he says he is), ‘I won. I will trump you on that’, doesn’t sound like a positive step in that direction.

Because, as we all know, the republicans are incapable of working together and he is giving them the chance. They have already shit on it and now we move on.

The real question you should be asking is why the republicans are not on board for the changes needed. They have no solutions yet they don’t want anyone else’s idea to see the light of day……..

  197. RandomChaos says:

    Backup,
The Quote attributed to a comment given by President Obama(I love the sound of that!)as reported (not witnessed) by 3rd parties is in all most likelyhood entirely out of context. I do agree with you that, taken as presented, It shows a very partisan aspect. However, I think that is probably more a reflection of the partisanship/bias of the reporter(s) own opinions.

At this point in time, I am more enclined to put trust in what President Obama has to say to us directly. I do not put much stock in any of the National Media drivel.

  198. backup says:

katy. Explain it to me. He wants to lecture people about how they need to be more bipartisan. Then he follows it up with “I won. I will trump you on that.”

I think Obama should lead and make the decisions that he feels are best for the country. That’s what he was elected to do. He was not elected to compromise with Republicans. Many times, over compromised decisions aren’t good decisions.

Cantors got reservations about spending. Many people have those concerns. But, decisions have to be made and they are Obama’s to make.

You can’t have it both ways. The appeal of bipartisan compromise is incompatible with Obama using his mandate to ‘trump’ opposition.

But, nobody’s perfect. It is possible. Even so, it would be a very small misstep in an otherwise auspicious beginning.

  201. Zooey says:

    Captain,

You hold up one comment as an example of President Obama’s failure to act in a bipartisan manner. Ok, that’s one.

I suggest you look at the last 8 years — and the last 4 days — for examples of how the Republicans (party first, country second) have failed to act in a bipartisan manner.

    Get over yourself.

  202. RandomChaos says:

You’re out of school as usual captain. the republicans have been allowed to come to the table which is more than they allowed the dems when they were in power.

It is up to the republicans to get on board or become even less relevant in the future……I personally hope they continue until they destroy themselves completely.

  205. Hoodathunk says:

If, by reminding a minority member of the Congress that he has won and is in charge, the president is displaying a lack of bipartisanship you are claiming he is telling the person to shut up I think you misread the statement.

It sounds to me like he is saying, buddy, learn to play nice with others because things are changing.

  206. backup says:

Zooey. (et al). I agree Obama is doing a good job of trying to be bipartisan. I also see the Republican partisanship of the past.

I’m assuming progressives have higher standards for Obama and Democrats than comparisons to Bush and Republicans.

This posting and many of the comments seem to applaud Obama’s ‘trump’ comment. I’m just saying that if Obama is serious about bipartisanship, that comment is a misstep and a turn back towards the status quo.

    Obama is better than that.

  207. Hoodathunk says:

The republicans lost, it is up to them to show that they have America’s best interest at heart.

You used to hammer dems for not having a backbone, now just the opposite….sounds like the same mantra and methods that the republicans are famous for. Talk bi-partisanship when they are out of power, etc.

The dems have always been less partisan, simple fact. When you talk about changing your ways and being bi-partisan, you are only talking to republicans…..simple, unavoidable fact.

Sad for the republicans but they earned it.

Please get on board to get the republicans, who have no idea how they destroyed our country but want to be heard, to understand that they, and they alone, will have to get on board with basically the rest of the country.

  212. Hoodathunk says:

Fred, I didn’t say any of them weren’t closer to what might be right. Nor can I think of a group further from it than the repugs.

  213. backup says:

Fred. I agree that elections have consequences. The American people chose Democrats to lead the country. They should lead and drop the facade of bipartisanship. I disagree that Republicans need to ‘get on board’. You probably wouldn’t agree that Democrats should have just gotten on board with Bush policy over the past 8 years. There are real ideological differences. The majority decide the debate and now favor Democratic leadership. But, the ideological differences remain. If Obama and the Democratically controlled congress show effective leadership and positive results, they will enjoy continued dominance. If they do not, the ideological pendulum may swing back. I hope Obama is successful and the American people are better off for it. But, it is the opposition that provides an alternative to ensure those with the power keep working to promote the general welfare.

You trust the politicians who represent your interests, period. It doesn’t matter who you are. America no longer trusts the republicans……with good reason.

yeah because democrats need a patriarchal figure to tell them who to listen to and what to think. Most americans know that is the uncontested realm of repukelicans. otherwise, there wouldn’t be people on public airwaves like rush baggyballs, bill loofah-boy orally, sean insanity, tokyo rose malkin et.al

I must protest, a bit. Foul creatures, like Daryyl, are not made by gods, demons, ghosts, spirits or specters. They are made by evil people and each other. They deserve ALL the blame for their vileness.

As for allowing them to participate in discussions because they provide insight to what the enemies of reason are up to? I don’t buy it. There are plenty of sources which keep us informed of the foul fundamentalists. Allowing them to participate in civil discussion serves no other purpose than to legitimize their actions in their own defective minds. They can’t be shouted down, only shut out.

katy. Explain it to me. He wants to lecture people about how they need to be more bipartisan. Then he follows it up with “I won. I will trump you on that.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

You make the mistake of seeing things in black and white AGAIN. Bipartisanship does NOT mean giving up and uniting behind THEIR previous stated positions. He said that AFTER one of the GOP guys started complaining. NOTICE where it says they were in NO MOOD FOR COMPRIMISE. Bipartisan is trying to work with the other side not compitulating to them. Telling they HEY I won the election the people are on my side is making a good point it is NOT antithetical to bipartisan. If THEY think just being stubborn and obstructionist will get them their way they NEED to be reminded it wont.

I think Obama should lead and make the decisions that he feels are best for the country. That’s what he was elected to do. He was not elected to compromise with Republicans. Many times, over compromised decisions aren’t good decisions.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

True but if there IS a decent comprimise to be had one way to get to it is to remind the other side that YOU have the stick of public opinion on your side.

Cantors got reservations about spending. Many people have those concerns. But, decisions have to be made and they are Obama’s to make.

You can’t have it both ways. The appeal of bipartisan compromise is incompatible with Obama using his mandate to ‘trump’ opposition.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.

NO IT ISNT. Didnt you read the part where it said directly they were in no mood for compramise. Pointing out that he has the popular opinion on his side is NOT imcompatable to bipartisanship. It is getting them to remember that they NEED to work with him and not just be obstructionist jerks

  226. ppatt says:

They can hardly worship Saint Ronnie and the rogues gallery of wingnuts on steroids both without glaring contradiction that is bound to get them in even deeper.

Op-ed piece by Mickey Edwards a long time confidante of Reagan tells how the current crew of Republicans is a wispy perversion of the Reagan to whom they regularly pay homage.

It is a perfect matching bookend to this report:

    http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/commentary/la-oe-edwards24-2009jan24,0,3344794.story

Let’s just hope they keep going down the path they are on.

They are so spiteful that they cannot read the writing on the wall…they just do the opposite of what Obama recommends. At least that lets Obama control them. He compels them to continue taking orders from the wingnut like Limbaugh bu suggesting they do otherwise. This is the same sort of reverse psychology one would use on a pre-schooler.

    Apparently it is working.

  227. TLG says:

Now, why in the world would anyone think that Obama would give the GOP good advice? They already didn’t listen to Rush and nominated “Maverick” John McCain.

It’s really chilling when the someone in the highest office in the land tells you not to listen to someone. This is just the first salvo in taking away your right to freedom of speech. Next, it will be the “fairness” doctrine.

After that, look out Second Amendment! Obama, the so-called constitutional scholar, said that he doesn’t believe that the US Constitution pertains to the rights of the individual. This is the same man that makes a rule banning lobbyists in his administration the same day he nominates a lobbyist to Deputy Secretary of Defense.

The GOP doesn’t get it. They lost the election because their candidate was not a conservative. Soon, it will dawn on the Republicans that they need to get back to their conservative roots. That’s why California’s Proposition 8 passed even though California voted for the socialist Obama.

Notice the precondition in the second amendment that doesnt exist in the rights of the first amendment now it may be arguable. I dont care one way or another what you think about it the bald statement that it is Obamas position is ridiculous is plain stupid. Obama was editor of Harvard Law review. Where did you get YOUR degree in Constitutional Law again? Oh you dont have one? Imagine my surpise.

It is another bone ignorant argument that the GOP lost out because they werent rightwing ENOUGH. I am begging the GOP to follow YOUR lead and run nothing but rabid rightwing ideologues from now on. Good luck with that.

  236. kali90 says:

personally, I think the President made a mistake here.. complaining about Rush Limbaugh is like lighting a fire under those nutty ditto-heads.. one thing that would be really cool, in my humble opinion, would be for the President to call Limbaugh’s show unexpectedly one day, and thus catch Limbaugh off-guard…

  237. Middleoftheroad says:

I’d absolutely LOVE for BHO to call Rush. Actually, I’s sit down with BHO ANY DAY and debate economics with him. I’d literally expose him for the Socialist/Marxist he is. All of the taxpayer money that got him through Harvard, and he knows nothing about economics. He couldn’t get a security clearance because of his affiliations with Ayers, yet now he has the highest clearance one can have.

I don’t listen to Rush very often, but many of you here don’t either, so you don’t even realize you’re shooting the messenger because of the message.

Socialism/Marxism and Keynesian economics have NEVER worked.
You think that America was just overwhelmed that they were hiring a Black man (he’s really Arab/African)? Believe me, if it were Clarence Thomas who was running it would have been totally different. It was because after 35 years of public “education” (as evidenced here, and on Kos and Huffington), too many Americans believe that government is the answer….. that just because they breath oxygen, and have needs, that they have the right to rob, by the threat of government force, from people who have earned their money, to pay for what you feel you have some non-existent “right” to.

As outlined in the 2nd Amendment, and as George Mason said, the “militia” is “the whole of the people. In fact, Constitutionally, the FBI, DEA, DNR…. and every government agency EXCEPT the Armed Forces, has NO RIGHT to carry weapons. The 2nd Amendment is the reset switch on the Constitution. When government is afraid of your weapons, then it’s doing it’s job correctly. When the government is no longer afraid of Americans having weapons, the “The People” better beware, and be prepared for another civil war.

The Dems, and BHO in particular, absolutely HATE The Constitution, as it puts limits as to what they can and cannot do. Everything in the supposed “stimulus” bill is unconstitutional. But most all of you here don’t care a bit.

REPLY: Since you haven’t owned a business (as I do) or been told the truth in History class: reductions in the tax rate has worked EVERY TIME it has been used. It worked for Queen Elizabeth the 1st; and for Kennedy, and for Reagan, and for Bush Jr. Go back and check out the entire gamut of the economy from 2003 to 2006. There was a recession (almost a depression) in 1920. The president lowered tax rates, cut government spending. and what happened? …. the Roaring Twenties. FDR’s policies took America from a medium-sized recession into the decade-long Great Depression. and, no, it wasn’t WWII that got it out of the depression; WWII ended the New Deal, and THAT got America out of the Depression.
