Fred Hiatt on Kristol: ‘I thought he wrote a good column.’

hiattweb.jpgToday, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol wrote his final column for the New York Times and — despite a dismal record with the facts — will soon take up residence at the op-ed pages of The Washington Post. Noting that “[i]t’s extraordinary to see the job security someone like Kristol enjoys,” Steve Benen asked, “In what universe does the nation’s second most prominent newspaper decide it wants to pay and publish the failed cast-off of its chief rival?” Perhaps a universe in which Fred Hiatt is boss. The Post’s editorial page editor explained the decision:

I think he’s a very smart, plugged-in guy,” Hiatt told Politico, “and the question of how and whether the conservative movement and the Republican party are going to right themselves, and redefine themselves, will be one of the really interesting subtexts of the Obama era.” [...]

I thought he wrote a good column,” Hiatt said, of Kristol’s work at the Times.

It does seem fitting that Hiatt — whom Forbes magazine has said is the nation’s third most influential liberal — would think highly of Kristol. After all, both fervently advocated and continue to support the Iraq war, both defended the Bush administration’s leak of Valerie Plame’s CIA identity, and both seem to have trouble making sure their editorials are 100 percent truthful.

If only the people who were right about Iraq could get this level of respect.

  5. raynman says:

It’s amazing to me how many of these Republican ‘pundits’ keep getting recycled from media outlet to media outlet when liberal and progressive ‘pundits’ aren’t even allowed in the door.

  6. StratRat says:

The famous brother-sister act of Hiatt and Kristol. Both wrong, all of the time. Both still employed? So much for the fact based community of reality. Could you be wrong 80-90% of the time and STILL keep you job? Me neither.

  7. Buckie Boy says:

Kristol: ‘I thought he wrote a good propaganda column full of lies and misdirection.’

There fixed it…Kristol is part of the problem in this country.

  8. MysteriousTraveller says:

    Klown.

Hiatt is one of the people that Forbes listed as an “influential liberal” in one of the most ridiculous lists ever compiled by man or beast.

  9. kasinca says:

Wingers have never allowed the truth, reality, or facts get in their way. Case in point FAUX Noise and Weekly Standard.

  10. AmiBlue says:

I had no idea hiatt is considered a liberal in some quarters. He has been nothing but a rightwinger in his wapo editorials.

  11. Peter C says:

The list in Forbes is completely pathetic. When will the media stop asking rabid conservatives what liberals think?

Yeah, yeah, I know … when the media isn’t run by rabid conservatives.

On zionist war pig supports another zionist war pig.
    What a surprise…

  13. EnnuiDivine says:

I would put too much faith in a list that INSISTS Andrew Sullivan and Christopher Hitchens are “liberals”…or in any list that still refers to progressivism as liberalism. Wankers. Study your political theory, you establishment hacks.

  14. lokidog says:

“I thought he wrote a good column,” Hiatt said, of Kristol’s work…

…and I think GW Bush will go down in history as one of our greatest presidents”, continued an obviously inebriated Hiatt.

  15. stewarjt says:

Billy Kristol continues his comedy writing, intentional or not, at the Washington Post.

Helen, Rw’er……you just make shit up to fit your lie don’t you? Tell the truth, you do don’t you?

  17. hanshiro says:

*Gasp* A media figure propping up the distorting media pundits that perpetuate the media’s slant on military/industrial imperial aspirations of multinational corporations which own…media companies.

    No one could have predicted…

Umberto Eco. Now, that’s an impressive biblio reference.

  19. ElBruce says:

“I think he’s a very smart, plugged-in guy,” Hiatt told Politico, “and that I’m presently floating in a six-dimensional landscape of magical colors while tiny cats eat my brain.”

Is it any wonder newspapers are dying?

There are a lot of unemployed people who could write a better column than Kristol. In fact, you could go pick a random homeless person out of a cardboard box and they could write a better column than Kristol. Or Hiatt.

I couldn’t find such a thing on the Internets. Can you provide a hyperlink to your imagination? Thanks.

    Jebus. If that’s a liberal…then I’m the friggin’ Pope.

  21. shoeless says:

“I think he’s a very smart, plugged-in guy. I thought he wrote a good column,” Hiatt said, of Kristol’s work at the Times. Hiatt went on, “I also think if you hear the cry of an owl, someone will die soon, and that if I swallow my gum it will stick to my ribs.”

  22. Bozo The Neoclown says:

lil Billy kristolmeth is one step closer to his final destination…the washington times where he will be the reverand sum yung moon’s beyotch boy for the rest of his pathetic life.

  23. VerbalKint says:

Little man Fred Hiatt is no liberal.

  24. VerbalKint says:

It’s a shame Kristol didn’t stay on, as a perpetual reminder of far the NYT has fallen.

  25. MarkD says:

    Hiatt’s a liberal? Since when?

The folks at Forbes apparently think anyone who didn’t vote for McCain = LIBERAL! As does a majority of the media in this nation. It’s the only way an admitted conservative like Andrew Sullivan can keep being labeled as a liberal.

It’s sad, really, that we’ve become so polarized as a nation that people who disagree with conservatives on one or two issues — and only one or two issues — are no longer considered conservatives, while anyone who agrees with one or two liberal positions are automatically considered liberal.

Life ain’t that either/or. Not sure why all these stupid lists need be.

  26. The Dogfather says:

Hiatt’s completely out of touch — as are the rest of the right wing screechers he employs at WaPo (Krauthammer, Will, etc.). The fact that he felt he had to add yet another pompous a$$ to his stable is yet another reason why I’m cancelling my subscription to WaPo (it’s down to Sundays only at this point, which will soon be one day a week too many…).

  27. ken melvin says:

    Fred Hiatt’s a Neocon.

  28. WillowOrchid says:

    “I think he’s a very smart, plugged-in guy…”

    Plugged in to what?

  29. moondancer says:

The WaPo second most prominent paper in US? Not for more than twenty years. It is neck and neck with the Moonies WaTimes in the race for irrelevance. Oh, and I’m betting on the Moonies in the long run.

  30. Bullsmith says:

And of course Fred Hiatt is a liberal. Just ask Forbes magazine or a Republican.

  31. upside99 says:

    Hey windsor,

Why don’t you state your position on something instead of cutting and pasting?

    Or do you only
share the same ‘wide stance’ position as Larry Craig?

It’s just a silly game that right-wingers have enjoyed playing for some time. They go around calling each other liberals, then spew some stupid, vile, right-wing bullsh!t in order to discredit liberals.

It’s a dumb gambit, but there are enough dumb people to fall for it that it is worthwhile for them to continue.

  34. wiley says:

Kristol is an icon for the faithful.

  35. republicanSScareme says:

Isn’t the Weekly Standard published by Mad Magazine? Word is that Fred Hiatt is an Alfred E. Neuman wannabe.

  36. BearCountry says:

I don’t recall seeing Windsor before, but I believe that his #14 is supposed to be a joke because it is so opposed to reality.
