hanshiro – I have a question – you feel spending whatever sum is in a stimulus bill to provide contraception (although I feel this type of spending should be in a separate bill, not one to stimulate the economy) would save money on our future welfare costs to take care of unwanted children. I guess my perspective would be – why should we assume we are to take care of the welfare, childcare costs etc of people who refuse to take responsibility of their sexual choices? I think that the creation of this whole welfare system has only encouraged women to have children they othewise would not have. It does not take an intelligent person to figure out the birds and bees what with all the sex ed in school. We should know that sex causes pregancies – we dont need to counsel people about a fact of life to the tune of billions of dollars. If they choose not to take precautions and do not have a partner to help with the costs, we shouldnt assume to pick up the bill. Am I missing something?
I remember riding on the train when I was pregnant, and listening to these young women brag about how the state was paying for the delivery costs of the child, how they are getting a check and apt costs, and how they are lying about not having contact with a father. This is wrong. The father should be located and made to pay, not the taxpayers. Here I was working fulltime, single and paying my own insurance – and my taxes were being used to pay for them.
Just my own little worldview – pay to play has a different meaning to me— you play YOU pay, not me.

3) Citibank reference-Geithner’s poor management sunk them. He did not pay his taxes properly. I assume he is a Dem as he is Sec. of Treas. now.
4) How does this spending stimulate the economy? Maybe a little but from the comments here it seems many people are more interested in either a handout or an appeasement to a voter base

The majority of the American People voted to oust Republican foolishness and stupidity as their ideas have proven toxic to this country. 1. Emphasized how dire a situation our economy is in, the first stimulus plan didnt work, wants another one, maybe even more. Analysis: This like a kid who touches a hot stove gets burned, and then repeatedly returns touches it again and gets burned each time. Diagnosis: ABNORMAL. Phrase: If you always do,what youve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got. Throwing taxpayer money (our childrens and their childrens that is) at a problem will never solve it. Solution: What has always worked in the past: GOVERNMENT GET THE HELL OUT AND LET MARKET FORCES PREVAIL. THOSE WHO CANT SURVIVE WILL LOSE THEIR CUSTOMER BASE AND THOSE THAT DO, WILL GAIN THOSE CUSTOMERS THAT LEFT THE FAILING INSTITUTIONS…works every time. Nobody here is happy with CITIBANK getting a bailout and spending it on what appears to be superficial items, jets, re-decorating etc. In anger, People say “dont pay your CITI credit card bill”…thats a great idea if Government isnt planning on getting involved with them, because they would go bankrupt…however, this sdministration fully plans on pumping more money into them, so NOT paying your credit bill wound ends up beng a self inflicted wound…and it sucks…LEARN FROM THIS AND re-think what the GOVERNMENT (UNCONSTITIONAL) approach to solving this crisis is…you and your kids (and your kids kids) will be better off for it.
2. Obama is now officially a WAR Criminal (using the same measuring stick we used against BUSHY). 18 INNOCENT civilians killed (including women and children)in an attack in Pakistan on Obamas orders! If Bushy was a war criminal, then so is Obama and he now has the blood on his hands to prove it.
3. With the knowledge we are in a horrendous economic down turn of epic proportions, one of Obamas first Executive Orders was to send money to Europe for amongst other things..abortion dollars. Now call me a critic, but at this point in time during our “DIRE” economic struggles, this IS NOT the time to be sending money out, that we DONT HAVE. Especially for NON-ESSENTIAL “SUPPORT” MONEY to foreign nations. This is pure politics and one could begin to question just how severe our economic crisis ACTUALLY is with actions like this from our Chief Executive. After all why would we EVEN think of funding other nations, when we cant EVEN fund our own nation??? Hmmm.
4. Cabinet appointments. Lets see, we put a law breaker in as Attorney general. A tax cheat in as Head of the US Treasury. A politician in as head of the Intelligence Agency. Need I say more…Im sure their all competent (except those who got caught…oh I forgot…that was all of them!)
5. Controversy. What is it with Obama and controversy. he is the first US president to be plagued with criminal controversies before he was even sworn in…this does not bode well for us, in that he stll has four years to go and already he is mired in the sewage of corruption.

If you believe that it makes sense to spend millions of dollars overseas on other country’s “healthcare” needs while we are in a steep recession, you are beyond trying to rescue. Boy, the school system in this country has deteriorated more severely than I thought if this sight represents “progress”.

Amazing. The minority seems to be successful in killing this, are on tract to kill the labor bill, and have poisoned the TARP with tax cuts for the rich. I’m not sure I can take many more victories for the left like this.

He was in on a weekly conference call with Bush for the duration of his Presidency. They were talking about policy. That makes it politics.

There are a lot of these “religious leaders” who blur the line between religion and politics. It starts as soon as they start proclaiming that religious people should be in public positions and that their religious services and symbols should be mandated in public places. It continues to the degree that Republicans give them extra access and consideration of their goals.

Look at Ralph Reed for the most evenhanded example – although he doesn’t preach, he very much straddles the line between being a religious organizer and a political hack.

Actually, I don’t even think that Dems even see it as being a problem. It saves health care costs, because access to preventive women’s health care and prenatal care is the cheapest health dollar out there. I think Dems are just crunching the GDP numbers and putting in what works. The Republicans fruitbat religious concerns (like preferring all women to be sick, poor and subservient) aren’t really on the forefront of their minds.

I can see the family planning portion having been put in there so the republicans can get all worked up and then we say “ok, we’ll compromise with you by leaving it out”. They get what they want and can’t complain Obama is not listening. He gets his stimulus pkg. Family planning gets put in somewhere else, perhaps in a health care plan and we get what we want. Negotiation tactic, I think.

There is no special “family planning” part of the stimulus bill. Family planning is part of Medicaid in 26 states. Those states have obtained waivers from the Federal government to include family planning in their Medicaid services. It is a regular part of what those states do. To remove family planning, there would have to be language inserted saying that no part of the Federal money could be used for family planning. But then the states could just use their own money. Better to put language in the bill that prohibits states from providing familey planning with Medicaid funds, thus reversing the waivers. This would only be the right thing to do, as the Republicans won the election, validating their policies. BTW, taking this out won’t get you a single Republican vote.

This stimulus bill should be clean so in that sense I wholeheartedly agree with removing family planning from this bill and inserting it back in a later bill dealing with other social issues. With the business tax cuts the devil is in the detail. We have to be careful that the legislation doesn’t encourage job cuts so businesses gain tax credits for hiring the employees they just fired. It wouldn’t be the first time such a shell game has been played. On the other hand, I would not oppose business tax cuts targeted to things like green iniatives. It is like I said, the devil is in the details and I have not seen them spelled out yet.
