Fulfilling a campaign promise that was relentlessly attacked by the right wing, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice said today that the Obama administration will engage in “direct diplomacy” with Iran in order to curb the country’s alleged nuclear program:
“We look forward to engaging in vigorous diplomacy that includes direct diplomacy with Iran, as well as continued collaboration and partnership” with the other four permanent members of the Security Council — Britain, China, France and Russia — plus Germany, Rice said.
‘Not since before the 1979 Iranian revolution are U.S. officials believed to have conducted wide-ranging direct diplomacy with Iranian officials,” notes the AP. Rice “warned that Iran must meet U.N. Security Council demands to suspend uranium enrichment before any talks on its nuclear program.”
So when will Obama be accused of serving the interests of the Ayatollahs?
January 26th, 2009 at 4:19 pmSince the Media, Law Makers and even the White House are so stupid they have been attacking the President of Iran for so long it’s good to know Obama who is smart will deal with the Supreme Leader. Yes he rules Iran the President of Iran is like our VP. Good news only one American Leader has met him but it was after he left office. Bill Clinton met with the Supreme Leader who requesting help for Aide for Africa. Since Americans have been brain washed and the Supreme Leader doesn’t deal with ignorant people it makes sence that the Bush Administratiion never talked with them. The Supreme Leader is most likely still laughing at how Americans accept Bushims as an excuse for Bush’s ignorance over the 8 years. Now the World knows our Law Makers can’t spell either. Most don’t even know how many States make up the United States. Ignorance runs deep in the USA.
January 26th, 2009 at 4:22 pmDiplomacy from an administration?
BRING IT ON!
So nice to have a grown-up running the government again…
PEACE
January 26th, 2009 at 4:22 pmThroughout history, we have spoken to our enemies. The only reason someone would be against the practice is if they had nothing to say.
January 26th, 2009 at 4:25 pmUh Hello! This is the same EXACT policy of the Bush administration.
“We’ll have negotiations. But first, Iran must do everything we want. Then we’ll talk.”
Is it really diplomacy if one of the requirements for talks to begin is that one side gives the other side everything?

HUH??
a spellchecker and some punctuation might render this rant somewhat more comprehensible. I’ve read this three times, and I STILL have no idea of whom or what you are attacking.
January 26th, 2009 at 4:29 pmIt’s a good time to be an American! Go Obama!

January 26th, 2009 at 4:33 pmIn the coup of 1953 in Iran we, US, helped pull that off so Iran would not nationalize their oil for their people’s use. In my opinion, that is where our relations with Iran dissolved. Reminds me of, I think, Falwell wanting to execute Chaveze as Venezuelan nationalizes their oil.
Becoming energy independent is our only answer towards peace.
January 26th, 2009 at 4:35 pmHmmm, I predict more wingnut heads exploding.
Good thing they’re empty – otherwise, we’d have a whole lot of toxic waste to clean up.
January 26th, 2009 at 4:36 pmObama didn’t seem to want to negotiate with the children that were killed by the air-strike in Pakistan.
January 26th, 2009 at 4:38 pmOops, rethugs, the grownups are incharge…suck on that.

This was only 55 years ago. Iranians remember this like it was yesterday.
Obama didn’t seem to want to negotiate with the children that were killed by the air-strike in Pakistan.
Bush didn’t negotiate with the civilians killed in Iraq. Nor did he negotiate with the civilians killed in Hamas. Unlike him Obama expressed sympathy for both Isreal AND Hamas.
Finally, a goverment that does operate on a “shoot first and ask questions later” basis. Its been a long time comin’.
January 26th, 2009 at 4:47 pmSorry, meant to say doesn’t. :)
January 26th, 2009 at 4:47 pmB-b-b-but BUSH!! I mean B-b-b-but CLINTON!! I mean… wait, how does this work again?
January 26th, 2009 at 4:49 pmSusan Rice is not the one who decides whether we talk to Iranians or not; it is all in the hands of Hillary Clinton, who promised to obliterate Iran,if Iran attacks Israel.
January 26th, 2009 at 4:50 pmHow ironic is that Hillary is counting on Neocon Dennis Ross to the job of talking to Iranians.
It will be nothing but a trick,to show that Iran refused to live up to its negotiations promises, and later diplomacy will be called a failed attempt and we have no other alternative but to use force.
Just like when Clinton administration invited Yugoslavians to the table..then few motnhs later ..the bombs began to fall on Belgrade.
Bush showed no signs of talking to Iranians..now the new approach is yes we can talk, but war plans are still on the table when Iran is found not ‘responive’,an elastic word that Hillary,Ross and Obama can use to rally Americans and Europeans to start the war with Iranians on the basis that we talked, but talks have failed….!!
Here’s some free advice: If you want to be thought of as witty, your statements have to make sense. All you did was Mad Lib the OP. Try again.

January 26th, 2009 at 4:51 pmOfficial and tribal sources insisted all those killed in the missile attack were local tribesmen. They said Dil Faraz, his three sons, two nephews and some guests were killed in the attack.A Wana-based official of the political administration said the drone had probably missed the target and killed only innocent people. He said four children also lost their lives in the attack.
January 26th, 2009 at 4:52 pmOMG… you mean the United States is actually going to start acting like a global leader instead of a spoiled child?
January 26th, 2009 at 4:55 pmThis was what they did with Iraq. The negotiations were all demands that Iraq give up all WMD programs. Saddam said they didn’t have any WMD programs and UN weapons inspectors couldn’t find them. Didn’t matter. Saddam didn’t give up any WMD and so we invaded.
They then tried the same thing on Iran. They told Iran to give up its nukular weapons program. They said they didn’t have any weapons program and have UN inspectors looking over their uranium enrichment. Didn’t matter. The US was going to use the UN process as a justification for military force.
Look up what Scott Ritter has written and said about all this. He’s the best source for the use of this silly process to use the international legal process to start wars.

Uhmmm. I am most certain that a person cannot negotiate with someone who is deceased.

Yup. Obama didn’t waste any time getting blood on his hands.
He’s in the cool kids club now.

in the movie Truman, when Israel was being formed in 1948, Truman himself put Israel and Arab oil in the same sentence. That certainly has not been forgotten.
Obviously, Arab nations hate US for our deceitful, manipulative and lying actions, not our freedom.

This, it is correct. We’ve been screwing them over for more than half a century and then acting like we have no idea why they’re mad at us.

I do have a problem with it, particularly the conflicting reports I’ve heard as to how much involvement the President actually had. Whatever the case, I hope that he will rein in the CIA’s drone war in Pakistan. You don’t win hearts and minds by remote-control missile attacks.

The problem is that you can’t bomb people in a country, and then 4 years later, claim “hey, it wasn’t us, it was the previous President”. The relatives of the deceased won’t say: “Oh, that’s OK, then. No biggie. Have a nice day”.
This also applies to countries that have been screwed (or that perceive themselves to be screwed) by the USA without the use of bombs, obviously.
I fear that Obama will inherit a big part of the hate that Bush created in the last 8 years.

Very true and I think Obama knows this, therefore, we will see what actions Obama takes and how these actions will be viewed. I think it’s obvious that Bush didn’t a rats ass what the world thought. Obama does.

Also, maybe come clean on the real truth of why Israel was placed where it was ( for oil) and apologize for and acknowledge our participation of the Iran coup ( for oil) in 1953. If we continue to side step the real issues and continue to arm Israel, we only further insult the intelligence of Iran and add fuel to the fire.
People, turn the tables… this is why we are so hated.

Thank God we’re finally talking to Iran. I’d want nukes too if Bush called me the “axis of evil.” The nuke Israel thing is just a ploy for attention, anyway. Iran probably just wants our help getting them out of the dark ages.
