Unable To Come Up With Real Reasons To Oppose Economic Recovery, Hutchison Goes Into Auto-Attack

Caving to right-wing flailing and conservatives’ anti-abortion fear machine, President Obama is reportedly pressuring House Democrats to strip family planning funding from its economic recovery proposal — even though it would potentially save $700 million over 10 years.

This afternoon, MSNBC’s David Shuster pressed Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) about the provision, pointing out that it would help relieve states of some health care costs. Apparently unable to respond, Hutchinson launched a reflexive and knee-jerk attack on the recovery plan, defaulting to the first opposition point she could think of:

SHUSTER: When you give them [states] money to help with Medicare, it means that the states that have to balance their own budgets won’t have to spend as much of their own money to try to pour into Medicare because people are hurting.

HUTCHISON: Well, one of the big problems I have with this bill is that you don’t know which states it’s going to, there’s no allocation, it’s just going to be in the agencies and the bureaucracies to make these decisions.

Watch it:

With the family planning provision now off the table, Hutchison seemed desperate to find another reason to oppose the bill. However, the claim she stumbled onto — that “there’s no allocation” of the recovery funds — is laughably inaccurate. USA Today clearly broke down where the $200 billion in state aid would go (click through for state-by-state details):

The truth is that despite Obama’s compromise efforts, the right wing will always find a bogus reason to oppose the recovery plan, whether it’s too few corporate tax cuts, too little payback to the rich, or too much grass on the National Mall.

Three days after receiving $25 billion in federal bailout funds, Bank of America Corp. hosted a conference call with conservative activists and business officials to organize opposition to the U.S. labor community’s top legislative priority.

Participants on the October 17 call — including at least one representative from another bailout recipient, AIG — were urged to persuade their clients to send “large contributions” to groups working against the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), as well as to vulnerable Senate Republicans, who could help block passage of the bill.

What is it going to take to make these rich basturds realize that they are wealthy because of working people!!

Hutchison is another worthless person, doubly so because she is repugniscum.

She can’t even come up with a good reason!! She just does it.

  23. Stupid Git says:

    Katy,

About how that bipartisanship is working out: I was just over at “USNews.com” reading a piece about Obama’s meeting with Republicans today and was caught by the first three comments from readers:

    Crybaby
First he takes a shot at Limbaugh, now Fox News. Is it just me or does this President seem awfully thin-skinned?

They have the majority and don’t need the Repubs so why are they scared
Obama wants the Republicans to go along so he will have someone to blame since they must feel this isn’t going to work. Otherwise, they would just go ahead and pass the thing since they don’t need to Republican votes. And why does Obama always have to bring up FoxNews and Rush Limbaugh. This man is nothing but divisive. There is nothing about him that is bipartisan and nothing about him that isn’t sneaky. To me it seems so obvious but the policicans and news media people are like high schoolers that want to be cool and with the in crowd, to go along. Are their any grownups in the crowd anymore?

    The Audacity
GOP people need to wake up. This guy is going to push the most radical leftist agenda in U.S. history. This country is a center-right country and we should keep centrist policies in place. Contrary to people thinking Obama doesn’t have a clue, it’s scary to actually realize he has a clue and the first seven days of his administration should put the GOP on alert.

No playing favorites. The Dems want to silence us. We can’t just kill them with kindness. This isn’t some Student Senate from your college days.

    http://www.usnews.com/blogs/washington-whispers/2009/1/27/tales-from-the-inside-what-obama-told-republicans.html

So, for “playing nice” it has lead the right to think the Dems know the plan will fail, that Obama is a baby and that Repubs are being too nice… Seems the ice in their veins just won’t thaw no matter what you do.

  24. Craig Mack says:

Hutchinson is a tool, no doubt.

I think that, since we as taxpayers are footing the bill for this whole shopping trip, shouldn’t we get to see a complete reciept? I would really like to see where every cent, past stimulus and present, are spent. My daughter is 3, and she should be able to see (in several years) why she lives in a country thats is broke. I know I’m wishing, but am I wrong about this?

  25. Jackie says:

John Boehner from Ohio feels his State doesn’t need any help and even Mitch McConnel doesn’t feel taxpayers of Kentucky need any money right now. Even Eric Cantor doesn’t need a bailout for the State of Virgina. I guess Republicans really aren’t interested in the citizens of their States but more interesting in getting kick backs for themselves. No wonder we’re broke with the Bush plan of giving all the money to everyone but the taxpayers.

  26. Wayne A. Schneider says:

This quote from Stupid Git’s comment:

    The Audacity

GOP people need to wake up. This guy is going to push the most radical leftist agenda in U.S. history. This country is a center-right country and we should keep centrist policies in place. Contrary to people thinking Obama doesn’t have a clue, it’s scary to actually realize he has a clue and the first seven days of his administration should put the GOP on alert.

No playing favorites. The Dems want to silence us. We can’t just kill them with kindness. This isn’t some Student Senate from your college days.

It never ceases to amaze me how deluded these people are, and how little they understand simple math. The Democrats won the White House by a huge electoral margin, and they won major increases in both Houses! By what twisted logic do they cling to the belief that this is a “center-right country”?

And that cryptic line “We can’t just kill them with kindness” suggests to me that the poster might be alluding to the idea that there has to be a different way to “kill them”. They like to use violent metaphors, so there’s no reason to automatically assume that this wasn’t just another thinly-veiled one.

The second guy was clearly taking dictation from Rush Limbaugh. They think Obama is afraid of Rush, because he warned the Republicans not to listen to him. Obama said what he did because Rush is the divisive extremist who wants to destroy any chance of helping America recover. Didn’t he just sign a $400 million contract? He doesn’t have to worry about where his next meal is coming from. (Fill in your own joke here.)

You are right, Wayne. ‘Killing us with kindness’, indeed! Personally, my retirement accounts felt how their policies have been killing me, but I felt no kindness. I can think of no examples of kind behavior to liberals these past 8 years.

The track record for such steps is poor in general, but they are particularly ill-suited for a recessionary period. WITH?
    I am WITH no one.
    I am conservative.

    And now you say:

    Libertarian IS right WING!

So you don’t know what I am talking about but you are a conservative right winger. Delusional much?

“Seldom has such self-awareness been exhibited by a troll on this forum.

is it possible that there’s some hope for glezzy?”

this is a good example of unintelligent insults posing as political discussion.

Your arguments are WEAK when you resort to this crap.

Coming from you, glez, that’s… well, not a compliment exactly, but it sure don’t mean anything bad. It’s actually kinda comical.

In point of fact, glez, my comment wasn’t “posing” as political discussion. It was intended as a comment on your performance here, which really isn’t political, it’s social. Whether intelligent or un, I will leave to the judgment of the good posters here at TP. I’m pretty comfortable in my level of discourse. Your approval is not really what I seek, nor is your condemnation much of a worry.

    Thanks for the effort, though.

My guess is you have listened to Professorial BS about fascism.

Yeah, because no one who has studied a subject in academia for their entire career can ever have anything meaningful to say about it.

Tell us again why we should trust you guys with education?

  94. LiberalVoter says:

If you call those, “loaded questions” you must think Mary Hart asked the Obamas the toughest questions of the campaign season on Entertainment Tonight.

Are you really sure you and 95% of the nation are more intelligent than me?

You haven’t give me any reason to doubt that estimate. You’re like a “special” kid who runs around and yells. It’s cute for a while…and now it’s annoying.

At least i don’t need a Jonah Goldberg book to know totalitarian government when i see iT!!

No, you just need to see Jonah Goldberg on TV to know his Fascism is Democratic totalitarianism nonsense. I have a big inclination that Glenn Beck is appointment TV for ya.

    He is an entertainer.

He says horrific things, advocating mass murder, racism and the complete impoverishment of America. I’d find it less repulsive if you agreed with him than if you found that “entertaining.”

    .

    glezzery Says:

    I can’t stand Hannity.

    Ha ha, awesome.

    .

    glezzery Says:

HA! Like is was going to vote for that loon Gore or that phony ass Kerry!

    Libertarians don’t vote Democrat.

Right. “Libertarians” are just slaves to their Republican masters.

    .

    glezzery Says:

Ill take it my portion of the blame, but that would require you look at the GREAT Democrat Fannie Mae scandal and admit Democrats COVERED up what was happening.

Fannie Mae didn’t cause the massive failure of the mortgage/banking/CDS-swap industries. The industries overall did, because of deregulation.

    .

    glezzery Says:

Fascism, Socialism, Communism are all Leftist.

Except for fascism. That has always been a right-wing phenomenon. At least when it’s been tried in Italy, Germany, Spain, Romania, Japan and… well, yeah, everywhere. Right wing. Every time.

Calling fascism left wing would be like me claiming that communism is right wing. It’s just ridiculous.

    .

    glezzery Says:

When your points are “you suck!”, you have nothing to say.

But what if you really do suck? Your suckage is relevant.

    .

    glezzery Says:

On a political scale on one end TOTAL government and on the other NO government, where do Republicans and Libertarians fit?

There have been many right wing dictatorships. If you define yourself as being for “NO government,” then you are an anarchist. Please, defend anarchy. Let’s do that.

    .

    glezzery Says:

Gee, you complain the Republicans are in the minority and still have some power and then turn around and argue Democrats had no power in the minority!?!?!

Our complaint about the Democrats in Congress, expressed many times here, is that they are not nearly as good at leveraging power when they get it as Republicans are. It seems that Republicans get their way whether they’re in the majority or not, and Democrats just take it and let them every time. This upsets us.

    .

    Xisithrus Says:

Family planning is up to you and assistance is available

Actually, assistance with family planning is precisely what the Republicans are trying to stop. If they get their way, no assistance will be available to people who can’t afford it. That includes neo-natal care. Republicans hate babies.

    .

    glezzery Says:

Well then tell me again why Mussolini and Hitler named there organs “SOCIALIST”?????

    Huhh.
Explain to me what is right wing about Fascism?

Socialism then referred specifically to what we would call “corporatism” today – that is, a close working relationship between government and corporate interests. In both cases, many people switched back and forth between running companies and high government positions. The corporations supported the constant war efforts of the government, and the government favored the largest corporations with no-bid contracts. Fascism has always been also associated with strong nationalism and jingoism, an obsession with normative culture to the point of excluding all other cultural influences, unwarranted military aggression, and dividing the populace to pit the majority against all minorities.

Does any of that ring a bell?

  105. Shayne says:

You lost for a reason – see above.

Now get on board or STFU!”

Way to distort the liberal position. but hey, I can dig up one too…I take it you’re against government regulation, right? Then may I assume that you are for e.coli poisoning and dangerous corporate products that hurt and maim our citizens? YAY! But, in the end, what he is really doing is taking the wind out of their “we are the victims” sails, that ALWAYS comes after a big bill like this. He is letting them in on it, giving them face time, getting their input, seeking their counsel, hearing their considerations, listening to their suggestions, “bi-partisaning” ™ until they have no more. We knows the bill will pass, and he knows that these bi-partisaning interludes will only have to get LESS, not more, as his administration develops, since with each passing one, he keeps reaping the reward of their media self-eggrandizement.

I don’t think they’re on their lazy asses, I just think they’re too busy governing to take time to point out the Republican hypocrisy.

Or, alternatively, perhaps there’s some validity to the idea that Obama is letting the Republicans harm themselves with their public comments, and he has asked Dems to refrain from doing what the Repubs are doing. That is, until this stimulus package gets passed. Once obama sees how the Republicans stab him in the back, the hounds will be released. I love watching Barney Frank talk about Republican stupidity.

  155. adviceguy_07 says:

I can’t believe that some still want to blame Bush for everything. Could there be any more variables involved with this problem? Could the Chinese manipulation of the currency markets have had anything to do with it? Could the metoric rise in energy prices, driven by speculation, not supply and demand helped the problem? Could corrupt fund managers and bankers that were only interested in showing immediate gains on the balance sheet without caring about the risk caused part of this problem. Could our representatives in congress been swayed by big money lobbyists to maybe look the other way when they should have gotten involved in regulating or investigating the financial institutions?

IMHO we need to clean house (and senate)of all of the scoundrels that allowed this to happen under their watch. We need representatives who do not make a career of being a politician. We need people that won’t vote themselves a raise when the rest of the country is hurting…I could do this all day…
