Hoyer to GOP: Bipartisanship does not mean capitulation.

hoyerweb.jpgToday, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) had a message for Republicans complaining about the stimulus bill: “Being bipartisan does not mean having to lay down and say we’ll do whatever you want.” His comments came after President Obama met earlier with congressional Republicans to discuss their concerns about the package, which is scheduled to be voted on in the House tomorrow. Hours before that meeting, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) urged Republicans to oppose the bill unless Democrats make significant concessions. Hoyer called it “very unfortunate” that Boehner “set the stage [by saying], ‘Yeah, you’re coming up here, but we’re voting against you.’” He added, “It takes two parties and two groups to be bipartisan. Bi means two.”

OMG, a Dem with a mouth. Is there still hope?

  2. LiberalVoter says:

About frigging time! Either the Republicans start working for the country or they should be kicked to the gutter. The last 8 years is proof their way is crap.

  3. Zooey says:

So Steny, why did you so often capitulate to BushCo?

  4. Buckie Boy says:

Repukes are party first, screw the nation, they want the nation to go into a deep depression so they can get elected and make it worst….again.

  5. realpatriot says:

Great picture…was he testing the wind direction?

  6. ElBruce says:

    Prove it, Hoyer.

    .

    republicans hate facts Says:

Really? Because that’s what the GOP said it meant when THEY were in charge!! ROTFL!!

Again with the wingnuts projecting their own evil onto everybody else.

    realpatriot Says:

Great picture…was he testing the wind direction?

Why? Was a Republican standing in front of him? Obviously not since he isn’t wearing a gas mask.

  8. kasinca says:

To be a rethuglican one must have an inability to work or play well with others. Rethuglicans do think it is all or none.

  9. gitrdone says:

The Republicans are acting like they still have power and are crying like babies when they don’t get everything they want. What a joke.

  10. blue state bob says:

“Being bipartisan does not mean having to lay down and say we’ll do whatever you want.”

Seeing that Steny has laid down for the last 2 years, you need to prove that you won’t continue to back down before you can complain about being “forced” to back down.

  11. Hoodathunk says:

Folks, late to the party is better than never making it at all. This is the first indication of spine that should be encouraged.

  12. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    He added, “Bi means two.”

Well, it means different things to different people.

  13. SP Biloxi says:

Good for Hoyer. Calling a spade a spade.

  14. barfly says:

    Hoyer’s a joke.

Look closely, you’ll see creases from the last time he folded.

  15. superid says:

Wasn’t this guy one of the biggest dem cheerleaders for the war in Iraq? Apparently his idea of bipartisanship is laying down and saying go easy, I’ve only been at this since 1981.

  16. Perry logan says:

Bipartisanship implies playing by the same rules. Republicans never play by the rules. It’s amazing Hoyer hasn’t noticed this.

  17. Hoodathunk says:

I can’t believe what I am reading. A member of Congress finally stands up and says something positive and the response is…so what? Lets just send a message to all the other MOC’s…you’ve screwed up and we don’t believe you can change. We are doomed.

Is this really what this is all about?

  18. sherifffruitfly says:

Um, that would mean a whole lot more if you wouldn’t, like, EFFIN CAPITULATE EVERY EFFIN TIME YOU EFFIN COWARDS!

    Just sayin’.

  19. spencers mom says:

I have to wonder if it wasn’t Obama himself who told the Dem leadership to step up and do their jobs! After all, Dems hold both houses of congress and the white house, why does Obama have to do the heavy lifting?

    PEACE

  20. Another Joe says:

This is exactly why Obama and the dems need to quit capitulating to the repugs/neocons. They had their way for almost 8 years and nothing they advocated for was effective.

The country has a great deal of damage to undo. If the repugs want to stake their future on their failures of the past – LET THEM DO IT.

It is time to let America see them for what they are – obstructionists that don’t believe in government that works.

They stand for crony capitalism – nothing more and nothing less.

  21. fletc3her says:

The Democrats need to get some spine. The Republicans are not going to budge an inch. The Republicans would rather see this country continue on the road into another great depression than to help us find our way out of the morass that Bush has found our way into. Rush Limbaugh speaks for the Republican party when he proclaims that he would like to see America fail.

  22. barfly says:

Anyone wanting to see repub’s idea of bipartisan cooperation, tune in C-span. The congress is debating the package, and there hasn’t been a single repub speaking in favor of any part of the bill. Crazy Eyes Bachman’s on right now…

  23. bonzo 1958 says:

2 parties steny? For some reason, I thought YOU were a republican.

  24. Hoodathunk says:

And there is one guy who stands up and says no. Maybe if folks back him, it might get to be contagious.

Or have we forgotten…’Yes, We can!’

  25. madmax says:

Regardless of Steny’s supposed show of strength, the Dems will compromise. They got the power and don’t know what to do with it. Ultimately, the citizens lose, again, again and again.

  26. Hoodathunk says:

One of the first positive posts on the site and folks go Eeyore. A week into the administration and there is a glimmer of support and progressive folks are either silent or negative.

Time for a repost…”America is not made, it is in the making. Mere passive citizenship is not enough. Men must be aggressive for what is right if government is to be saved from those who are aggressive for what is wrong.”

We don’t always make the right decision the first time around.

  27. barfly says:

The repubs are still pushing that bogus CBO report.

At this point the repubs are playing to their base, and want the economy to tank, to prove they are that important to the issue, so just pass the damned thing, and let’em squeal. It will be their worst electoral nightmare.

  28. Marie says:

What we need are more comments like this from Dems on the Hill.
People need to be told – repeatedly – about just who is being bipartisan and who is being obstructionist.

  29. helenahandbasket says:

    Five stages for rushpublicans

Rush and Hannity are still in the “anger” stage.

Canter and Boehner are bouncing between “anger” and “bargaining”.

“Acceptance” may be another election cycle away.

  30. Hoodathunk says:

Ya know, I did a quick scan of posted stories here and while this is not a scientific study, it seems the negative posts get lots more attention than the positive ones.

    Why is that?

  31. LiberalVoter says:

Hoodathunk, I think we are all still in shock from the last 8 years of the Bush administration and 12 years of Republicans controlling Congress. Hopefully we will get our sea legs soon and either the Republicans work with Democrats to fix the mess they got the country in or they should be kicked to the gutter.

  32. Hoodathunk says:

ty LiberalVoter. I can appreciate your response. There is a lot of shock to overcome. Isn’t it up to the rational thinking types to lead the way?

  33. LiberalVoter says:

    Hoodathunk, agreed. Hang in there.

  34. Hoodathunk says:

Ok, I’m a bad boy with questionable credentials. I have a great deal of respect for the big dogs here. Everyone has gone to dinner?

  35. Theresa says:

And there’s nothing more Bi than Lindsey Graham…

  36. Anacher Forester says:

It’s almost amazing that Hoyer doesn’t realize he’s an anachronism. Almost.

Keep it up, Steny! You and your entire approach are obsolete. All on your lonesome you continue to set your party back another five years.

  37. questioneverything says:

ENOUGH! If you make the bill bad enough that 10 Democrats vote against it, you have cut off your nose to spite your face. It’s one thing to ask for input. It is quite another to bend over for the same treatment this country has gotten for 30 years. Screw em. Tell them they will be punished for being unAmerican, then pass the most effective version of the bill possible.

And shock has nothing to do with it. Could Hoyer actually be pulling out of his Stockholm syndrome? Will wonders ever cease?

  38. Mathazar says:

Sorry Hoodathunk, seems we’re all pretty cynical still.

I guess we’ve been let down too often the past few years.

  39. LiberalVoter says:

questioneverything, the shock I was referring to was ours.

  40. christopher wiwi says:

Ok folks remember we all were lied to about everything that went on during the Bushco crime family era,I just hope the dems stop capitulating to the Reich, especially on the tax cuts in the stimulus.I clicked on the links at the top story with K.B.H,the article proves to me that tax cuts at this time for the wealthy will not help because nobody is investing so no capital gains. These guys are all about their Reich wing ideology and their hatred of Obama, the middle class and America.

  41. ElBruce says:

Well, now the Dems have ditched both the Washington Mall facelift and Medicaid family planning spending from the bill. Which means the Republicans are 2 for 2 on killing things by lying and whining.

Of course, the two things the Republicans chose to pick on constitute a microscopic spending amount of the overall bill. It’s possible that Obama sprung a trap by dropping those two items the R’s were complaining about in return for their votes on the bill. So he gets 99.9% of the bill he wants anyways, which is pretty good. Unless they’re untrustworthy bastards, aka. Republicans. We’ll see.

And it’s not like the Washington Mall infrastructure can’t be put into a yearly budget and the Medicaid family planning thing go into the upcoming healthcare bill anyways…

You know, if the Republicans really believed in their economic theory about how government spending is always bad and tax cuts are always good, they could drop any opposition to the stimulus bill so when it didn’t work they could say “told ya so!” The fact that they feel they have to go out of their way to make it suck means that at some level, they know their philosophy doesn’t work.

    .

    Hoodathunk Says:

…it seems the negative posts get lots more attention than the positive ones.

    Why is that?

    1. Trolls attract comments.

    2. Throwing feces and screeching is hella fun.

  42. Max-1 says:

    .

    Dear Steny Hoyer (D-MD),
Funny, when the Republicans were in charge the Democrats practically submitted themselves to the whims of those in the majority. The “opposition party” virtually disappeared. Thank God for this “change” for it means that the Democrats will no longer be seen as behooving the whims of the Republicans, NO? I mean, of course the Democrats know what bipartisanship means…
    … COMPROMISE!

    .

  43. ucsbclassics53 says:

    TOO LITTLE, TOO F***ING LATE!

in a related note, Obama’s bipartisanship is dangerously close to the Democratic game of surrendering to the GOP in the name of bipartisanship. If he can cave when it comes to the National Mall and this, how will we know that he won’t cave on something like the Employee Free-Choice Act or the middle-class tax credit that would benefit those workers who do not earn enough to pay income taxes, but pay Social Security taxes?

  44. ucsbclassics53 says:

although to be fair, I have not given him a chance to see what he does about how he said that some things were not negotiable…like the middle-class tax credit.

Hey glezzery, you’ve got something on your chin.

  47. A Patriot Acting says:

Hey glezzery, Rep. Boehner called and said for you to get the f@ck back under his desk. Hah…Boehner, now THAT’S a funny name!

  48. A Patriot Acting says:

    Boehner…on glezzney’s chin….

  49. jayjaybear says:

Steny must have cleaned out his garage…he seems to have finally found his spine, back in among the Christmas wrapping and Easter decorations.

  50. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    glezzery Says:

Steny!! His name is STENY. HOYER!!
Like a cartoon character, from Cuba!

    Un-American to the teeth!

“Steny” is a variant of his Danish father’s name, Steen. Boy, you sure are showing just how ignorant you are. I would pity you if I could muster up enough energy to care if you ever recover from your delusions.

  51. Leftside Annie says:

Nice try, Steny, but you can’t reason with rabid dogs or Republicans.

  52. Bushie says:

“Being bipartisan does not mean having to lay down and say we’ll do whatever you want” he stated as he bent over while handing “Boner” the 150 grit petroleum jelly.

  53. Marie says:

glezzary, which sounds like a skin disorder, is mocking Steny Hoyer’s name.
Pathetic and pointless – it just comes to post here to be a nuisance.

  54. Jane E. Schneider says:

Yesterday Dems didn’t want “to lay down and say we’ll do whatever you want.” Apparently the Republiskunks must have given the Dems the date rape drug, because they’re more than ready to lay down and do whatever the ’skunks want today.
