Juan Williams: Michelle Obama is ‘Stokely Carmichael in a designer dress.’

Fox News contributor Juan Williams — who has complained about the “militant anger” that Michelle Obama “sometimes uses” — kept up his attacks on the First Lady last night. Appearing on the O’Reilly Factor, Williams agreed with conservative commenter Mary Katherine Ham that Obama will have to watch what she says since, according to Williams, she is “Stokely Charmichael in a dress“:

WILLIAMS: And let me just tell you this: If you think about liabilities for President Obama that are close to him, Joe Biden’s up there, but Michelle Obama’s right there. Michelle Obama, you know, she’s got this Stokely Carmichael-in-a-designer-dress thing going. If she starts talking, as Mary Katharine suggested, her instinct is to start with this “blame America,” you know, “I’m the victim.” If that stuff starts to come out —

O’REILLY: Yeah, it’ll be death.

WILLIAMS: — people will go bananas and she’ll go from being the new Jackie O to being something of an albatross.

Ta-Nehisi Coates noted that Williams’ remarks “prov[e] he knows very little about Michelle Obama and even less about Stokely Carmichael,” the civil rights leader who coined the phrase “Black Power.” Resisting “the urge to say something really nasty,” Coates simply quipped, “It’s a dangerous, dangerous thing to make a living running your mouth.”

  1. Zooey says:

Obviously, Juan Williams is deeply fearful of strong black women and men, which feeds directly into O’Reilly’s fear of everything not himself.

  2. gummitch says:

Juan Williams is a tool and fake “liberal”. No matter how illiberal his comments, he’s still getting paid big bucks for the pretense.

  3. superid says:

I’ll bet Bill O is still thinking about Stokely in a dress.

  5. Krazny says:

I would expect continued attacks on Michelle Obama and describing her as some ultra-radical violent black panther. they tried this during the election, and it looks like continuing this attack.

  6. ElBruce says:

What the hell is wrong with Stokely Carmichael?!? Man, I hate it when they take something they’re completely ignorate about and try to villainize it.

And she’s never had a “blame America” instinct. They just made up a bunch of crap for the campaign.

  7. Buckie Boy says:

“It’s a dangerous, dangerous thing to make a living running your mouth.”

O’Lielly seems to be doing very well doing that.

And they called President Obama (I really like that) the “Magic Negro”. This man goes from crying during the Inauguration to disrespecting a woman who looks like the women of his family that NEVER got a chance to not only see that day but vote for it.

Unsurprising, since Williams is a misogynist @sshole:

    (via wiki)
In 1991, Williams was disciplined by the Washington Post after several female employees at the paper claimed he directed “sexually explicit and hostile comments” towards them. Williams’ letter of apology read, in part: “Some of my verbal conduct was wrong. I now know that, and I extend my sincerest apology to those whom I offended.”

Huh. I’ll bet he’s just plain pig jealous. Michelle looks a whole lot better in her dresses than HE does in his.

  15. wiley says:

Bananas are what to an albatross? Do these people hear themselves?

  16. MapleStreet says:

I’ll admit – Michele Obama impresses me as an incredibly strong and capable person. I sure don’t want to face her as an opponent.

But Carmichael ? Come on. She’s a law-firm-type lawyer, if I remember right.

  17. mk3872 says:

I was disgusted by Williams. Her is a woman who raises 2 daughters, is faithful to her husband and doing nothing except being a good mother & wife and Williams goes off and frames her life in terms of politics and being an albatross?? For whom?? Her own husband?? Man, I cannot imagine how deeply cynical or desiring of being nasty to the Obamas that one must be to say such things. Absolutely adhorent.

I guess this is what passes for “loyal but principled opposition” these days.

    loyal but principled opposition.”

The truth is Bill O, contrary to his self wrought mythology, is a draft dodging son of an accountant while the Obamas are self made American success stories. Juan is from Bed Sty and should know better, but I guess ya got to make a living somehow. Personally I would rather clean bathrooms at Penn Station than work for Fox, but that’s just me.

  33. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Would Juan Williams think more highly of Michelle Obama if she had once shot a man just to watch him die?

  34. Marie says:

Williams fills two roles at Fox — he is their Uncle Tom and their token “librul.”
Comments like his are indicative of his low self esteem as well as his low status at Fox. One would think that he would be more emboldened to speak up for the Democratic viewpoint, but cheap shots like this show his true colors.
And this is the guy who teared up when Obama was elected — he must have gotten a message from the boss after that.

  35. ralph the wonder llama says:

Juan Williams consistently spews crap like this. I wonder how, with his track record, he failed to land a spot on Forbes Most Influential “Liberals” in the Media list.

  36. Cats r Flyfishn says:

Juan Williams can bend over and grab his ankles. This is NOT about Michelle Obama. She is off limits just like Laura Bush. The press didn’t attack Laura and they should keep their mouth shut about Michelle.

  37. Cats r Flyfishn says:

And they called President Obama (I really like that)

Sgt – Yeah, it does have a nice sound to it, doesn’t it. I like it, too.

  38. Marie says:

I remember that Stokeley Carmichael was leader of SNCC, who joined in non-violent integration in the south. He became discouraged by the continued and incessant beating of innocent blacks by white authority figures and he began to think in terms of black power, which further alienated the already racist population.

Why he was used as a negative example is simply pandering to the braid dead bigots who watch Fox.

  39. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    Cats,

You are right. We (liberals on blogs) kept bringing up Laura Bush’s lethal driving record, not the media. They even ignored the rumors of their (Bushes) marriage falling apart. (BTW, are George and Laura living in the same city right now?)

Has the First Lady actually made any public appearances and said anything since moving into the White House. What did she say to bring about this “anger”?

This appearance is what gives Juan his high value to Faux News.

I can see the concern he raises, however, I agree with O’Reilly.

    There’s two surprises.

she isn’t going to be a loose cannon on deck. She will be a fine first lady. She’s not an undisciplined sidekick like Rosalyn Carter was.

    “An undisciplined sidekick”?

    Rosalyn Carter?

Oh, wait — it’s drew3rd, who has an unnatural hard-on for trashing a Nobel Peace Prize-winning, Sunday school-teaching former president. Never mind.

I am wondering if Juan Williams would dare say what he said about Michelle Obama straight to her face? Nope, he wouldn’t. Like most GOP folks, he must hide behind o’reilly. What a tough guy he is. GOP folks are simply pussies. The last 8 years have proven that beyond any doubt.

  43. CParis says:

GSD Says: Uncle Juan mofo loser. He must spend his nights wearing a jockey uniform and holding a lamp on Rupert Murdoch’s doorstep.

Too true. And I wonder how many of FauxNews braindead viewers even know who Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture) was?

  44. Hoodathunk says:

Even more telling is that even at the height of his unpopularity, no one in the media attacked his wife. Bush was a grade A, Prime, #1 butthole but the media treated Laura with deference and respect. Had to, she had to put up with the jerk.

Anyone ever notice that the only time First Ladies are fair game is when they aren’t Repugs?

    Class act

  45. Hoodathunk says:

also, I have a feeling picking on the First Lady will get a rise out of the President.

Absolutely. If he was on the air with her he’d be kissing ass like there was no tomorrow. I suspect that Michelle Obama wouldn’t let him get away with that for a minute, which would of course earn her another round of third-hand sniping when she was safely out of the room.

Republican “truth” = the 28% in this country who have such low ego strength they need a strong father figure (the Republican party, Rush Limbaugh, et al) to tell them how to think and how to act. I think that pretty much sums up this idiot troll.

Fortunately for us the remainder of the people in this country have a pretty good hold on what is truth and what is BS being fed to them by Republicans.

Michelle Obama, you know, she’s got this Stokely Carmichael-in-a-designer-dress thing going. If she starts talking, as Mary Katharine suggested, her instinct is to start with this “blame America,” you know, “I’m the victim.”

  62. Cal Gal says:

“Williams is no faux democrat. ”

Of course not. He’s a real ReThuglican.

That he’s presented as “liberal” just shows how faux Faux News really is.

  63. Cal Gal says:

“She’s not an undisciplined sidekick like Rosalyn Carter was.”

Aside from the slight error in characterizing Rosalyn Carter as “undisciplined” (WTF? Unless he means disciplined in a S&M way), I think Michelle Obama will be more like Rosalyn Carter than any other first lady in my memory. Smart, well-spoken, and eventually dedicating her life to important global work.

  64. Jess Wonderin says:

Faux pulls Uncle Juan out to show America a “fair and balanced newscast” . . . . like painting the lawn jocky pink . . . we still get it.

  65. ElBruce says:

Some info on Stokely Carmichael, for any aspiring FAUX pundits who think maybe knowing what the f**k they’re talking about might be an interesting idea:

In 1960, Carmichael went on to attend Howard University, a historically-black school in Washington, D.C., rejecting scholarship offers from several white universities. At Howard his professors included Sterling Brown, Nathan Hare, and Toni Morrison. His apartment on Euclid Street was a gathering place for his activist classmates. He graduated with a degree in philosophy in 1964.

He joined the Nonviolent Action Group (NAG), the Howard campus affiliate of SNCC. He was inspired by the sit-ins to become more active in the Civil Rights Movement. In his first year at the university, he participated in the Freedom Rides of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and was frequently arrested, spending time in jail.

Regarding his connections to the Black Panthers:

In 1966 Carmichael journeyed to Lowndes County, Alabama, where he brought together the county’s African-American residents to form the Lowndes County Freedom Organization (LCFO). The organization was an effort to form a political party that would bring black residents of Lowndes — who were a majority in the county, but held no elected offices and were locked out of local politics — into power. The organization chose a black panther as its emblem, ostensibly in response to the Alabama Democratic Party’s use of a White Rooster. In the press the LCFO became known as the “Black Panther Party” – a moniker that would eventually provide inspiration for the more-well known Black Panther Party later founded by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland, California.

More than most, Carmichael never played the “victim” card. Buy neither did he play the “blame whitey” card.

Let’s be very clear here: anybody who would villainize such a career is fronting for the disenfranchisement of all African-Americans and a return to Jim Crow. He’s only scary if what you’re afraid of is equality.

Next thing you know they’re going to be complaining about that uppity Martin King fellow.

I think the only solution to MSM incompetence is to support shows that focus on the last ridiculous thing that somebody said in the MSM. That’s the main reason the Daily Show is so popular. It doesn’t have to be done as comedy though; I could stand to see a cable meta-news show that basically consists of “did you believe that guy said that? here’s the research.” Then have the people that said the stupid thing on and make ‘em dance.
