O’Donnell calls out Rep. McCarthy on his bogus economic talking points.

Today on MSNBC, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) attempted to argue that the House economic recovery package needs more corporate tax cuts instead of infrastructure spending, arguing that it wouldn’t help create any jobs. McCarthy, however, was swiftly knocked down by host Norah O’Donnell:

REP. MCARTHY: Refurbishing a building, putting new grass down in a mall. That doesn’t create buildings. That doesn’t creates jobs.

O’DONNELL: Really? I would think you have to hire somebody to put the new sod down on the National Mall.

Watch it:

The plan to revitalize the National Mall is a very small part of the economic recovery package; conservatives are grasping at straws to justify their reflexive opposition. As the Wonk Room’s Pat Garofalo points out, “infrastructure investment creates more than 60,000 jobs for every $1 billion spent, versus just 10,000 jobs for every billion spent on a corporate tax cut.”

The only thing the mall needs is some new sod and a few public restrooms. They were talking about doing a complete overhaul and putting in all these facilities. That’s all unnecessary. Just new grass and new toilets and leave it at that.

But that someone would probably live in D.C. and so if your Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) that someone probably doesn’t exist…

now if we were talking about re-seeding golf courses in Calif.’s 22nd- well then everyone would benefit, from the Gardener hired to do the work on up to the Rep. and his buddies who torment said Gardener on the driving range…

I’m confused. If repubs are supposed to be the party of fiscal responsibility, of law and order, of strong national defense, of moral and philosophical opposition of communism/socialism, why, when they held both houses and the White House did they borrow a trillion dollars from a The Peoples Republic of China, a communist/socialist country to wage an illegal war that has made us less safe?

  6. larkohio says:

It takes workers to grow the sod, and to put it down. Ditto with rehabbing buildings. Someone manufactures materials, someone installs it, etc. etc. Their argument is illogical. They didn’t come up with any ideas, did they? Just pass the thing, here in middle America folks are hurting.

This mall thing, they’re talking about 0.03% of the overall stimulus bill.

They just want to give all the money to rich people so the rich people will give us jobs.

Now the RNC is low on campaign money so their bringing back wing nut racist Sarah Palin. John Boehner from Ohio is telling all Republicans to vote against the bailout for the taxpayers and he feels his State of Ohio isn’t that bad. Republicans have to join together and get money back to the Rich Donors who have given them money for the pass 8 years. Eric Cantor got his 40,000 dollars for his vote on the Wall Street Bailout and now is looking for more. Two States in the worse shape are Ohio/Michigan yet Republicans representing those States don’t think they need help from the President. Rush told the truth when he said it’s all about Obama failing and no one cares about the suffering of the American people.

  25. ElBruce says:

    Tracy__5 Says:

I would say how quickly these infrastructure building jobs come on line it totally relevant to the American who just lost their job.

You bet. However, it’s recently occurred to me that even if it took a while for the stimulus effects to impact the economy, that itself would bring an immediate impact in terms of consumer confidence. Knowing that there are more effects next year and the year after that, etc. would boost confidence in the stock market as well. Sometimes it’s not a bad thing not to blow your wad all at once.

However, the complaint that the stimulus bill will take a long time to have an impact (based on a lie about what the CBO says) has already been debunked in the next story down. The CBO expects 65% of the stimulus to affect the economy directly within the next 2 years.

    Thanks for asking.

    .

Min. Give $10 to someone making more than $100k and they are much more likely to hold onto the money. When they do spend it, they are much less likely to spend it on something that will lead to American jobs (see Citigroup buying a French luxury Jet).

In short, if you want to increase the economy, give the money to the people on the low end of the economy.

America might be at 25% unemployment in 6 years with this sort of thinking.

  68. Sahu says:

    Hoodathunk Says:

A fair point. On the other hand, anything I have to say about Rep. Cantor is going to be pejorative in the sense that I have nothing but contempt for him, his policies and his smug little sneers. You show me a nice, polite way of saying that, and I’ll point out that it doesn’t come close to expressing my opinion of the man (and I use that term loosely). “Pejorative” simply means using a word in a manner intended to deride or ridicule someone.

Now, if you meant “obscenity” rather than “pejorative” then we’re actually back to my point–I find nothing obscene about feminine-hygiene-product-related remarks, and I actually do take offense at the implied notion that there is something inherently “dirty” or “offensive” about using the aforementioned term in its modern, slang sense of a “self-important moron,” which was clearly my intent.

  69. Hoodathunk says:

Let’s see, current Repug theory says when the rich have money there are lots of jobs available in the country. For the past 8 years this has been the case, at least as far as the part about handing money to business.

I am sooooo glad this theory is real. (snark off)

  75. Sahu says:

Ok, let’s put it into another context and see how much water your logic holds, Hoodathunk.

You walk into a house to hear the owner speak. He delivers an impassioned appeal for human rights and the basic dignity of his “fellow man” and then, afterwords, invites his guests to join him in the parlor for a discussion of his remarks, during which he claps his hands and servants come hurrying forward, eyes-downcast to serve refreshments. When you attempt to confront him about this apparent hypocrisy, he declares that you have violated his hospitality and has you unceremoniously removed from the premises.

Now, who did the right thing here? Should you, in such a case, be silently complicit in hypocrisy out of common courtesy?

Then why should you expect such behavior here on the ‘net?

The process of getting a permit for “infrastructure” work is long and tedious and the must be the budget from the previous fiscal year for anything past design development to take place. For a supposed architect, you sure don’t know much about construction.

    New York Sites Are
Ready for BusinessWelcome to the Shovel Ready website! Here you will find information about the premier designation available through New York State’s innovative “pre-permitting” program.

Having an economic development site certified as a “Shovel Ready Site” means that the local developer has worked proactively with the State to address all major permitting issues, prior to a business expressing interest in the location. This advance work creates a site where construction can begin rapidly, once a prospective business decides to develop a facility there. By reducing the time it takes a company to begin construction of a new facility, New York State and its local partners are able to provide valuable savings to the business and job opportunities for local residents.

Didn’t O’Donnell just criticize the Mall spending, as wasteful?

    Now she thinks it’s acceptable?

Way to straddle a news item, Norah.

  85. redboy says:

Kevin is just a good old boy from Korncounty, our own little red leader.
He is just one of the gang, we elect to obstruct, and show the world how the cow ate the cabbage.
This big time liberal news people confuse our boy, he has his orders so don’t confuse him, what part of no new taxes don’t you fellers outside Bakersfield do not understand?
Kevin knows that we don’t need no stinking stimulus in Bakersfield Ca; stimulus is for wimps that don’t ever hang out at Bucks, Owens that is at the Chrystal sty.
    Yahoo, Bako!

    TP,

I noticed that the URL for this thread shows its title as “Sod ODonnell”. Shouldn’t that be something like “ODonnell Calls Out Repubs”? Are we turning British here?

  87. bogtrotters says:

McCarthy–my Congressman–is such a lightweight they have to tether him to his desk in the House. Can’t take a pee without talking points stenciled in the bowl.

  88. labman57 says:

The GOP should just eliminate all of the blather and cut to the chase, and when asked why they oppose the stimulus package, they should simply reply: “cuz….”

  89. shoeless says:

So, Tracy’s objection to building infrastructure is that it can’t be done, because some yahoos down in Texas couldn’t figger out how to do it. This attitude is why anti-government Republicans no longer run our government.

    I say, “Yes we can!”
