Pence: ‘I Don’t Believe Rush Limbaugh Has A Racist Bone In His Body’

With hate radio host Rush Limbaugh coming under increasing scrutiny for saying that he hopes President Obama fails, his conservative groupies have been rushing out to defend him. Today, for example, Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) went on his show and said on-air, “I see eye-to-eye with Rush Limbaugh.”

This afternoon on MSNBC, it was Rep. Mike Pence’s (R-IN) turn. Host Norah O’Donnell asked Pence whether he agrees with Limbaugh’s statement that the country is being forced to “bend over, grab the ankles, bend over forward, backward, whichever” because Obama’s “father was black, because this is the first black president.” Pence refused to condemn Limbaugh, chastising O’Donnell for implying that Limbaugh is “racist”:

O’DONNELL: On that specific thing, that we have to bend over because this is the first black president, why don’t you feel that you could denounce something like that? Are you so beholden to someone like Rush Limbaugh that you can’t say —

PENCE: Oh gosh, Norah —

O’DONNELL: — that’s not the type of rhetoric when America is trying to come together to do something for the unemployment rate — in your state of Indiana it’s 8.2 percent — is that the rhetoric we need?

PENCE: I don’t believe Rush Limbaugh has a racist bone in his body. If you’re suggesting that his statement had a racist element in it, I commend you to a greater understanding of the positions he’s taken. He’s a man about opportunity of all Americans, regardless of race, creed, or color. That’s why he’s so admired and appreciated across America.

Pence never explicitly said that he wants Obama to fail, although he did say that he “cherish[es]” Limbaugh’s “voice in the public debate.” Watch it:

Maybe Pence needs a refresher on some of Limbaugh’s positions, such as his statements that minorities can get away with anything, Hillary Clinton is a “B-I-itch” who has a “testicle lockbox,” and Obama is a “little black man-child.”

Transcript:

O’DONNELL: On another matter — I want to ask you about Rush Limbaugh. He said, “I hope he fails,” talking about President Obama. Rush Limbaugh also said this. He said, “We are being told that we have to hope Obama succeeds, that we have to bend over, grab the ankles, bend over forward, backward, whichever, because his father was black because this was the first black president.” Do you agree with Rush Limbaugh?

PENCE: Let me speak specifically to what Rush Limbaugh said about America. I actually heard a little bit of him this afternoon. We all hope America succeeds. In that vein, we hope our President succeeds. I think Rush Limbaugh — who I admire, and like millions of Americans, I cherish his voice in the public debate — I think that’s what he was saying.

But, he was also saying is where Barack Obama is going to pursue the implementation of campaign promises, where he’s going to grow government, grow spending, depart from traditional values, or take positions with regard to the national defense that are antithetical to conservative values, we certainly hope there will be strong opposition from voices like Rush Limbaugh and from leaders here on Capitol Hill. We appreciate — I understand what he was saying Norah. We all hope our President succeeds, we all hope America succeeds. But that doesn’t mean we’re going to agree with what the best solutions are for the country.

O’DONNELL: No doubt you can agree with Rush Limbaugh that he’s calling the stimulus a sham and full of wasteful spending. On that specific thing, that we have to bend over because this is the first black president, why don’t you feel that you could denounce something like that?

Rush is just a waste of air. He has portrayed himself as alot of things but never human.
I think that the GA person who said he agrees with everything Rush says will probably not be reelected…..

  2. Teowens says:

Okay, did he seriously just say that? Tell that to Media Matters.

Discussing Obama, Limbaugh suggests Dems, media believe “you can’t criticize the little black man-child”:

PENCE: I don’t believe Rush Limbaugh has a racist bone in his body.

Rush doesn’t have a bone in his body, his bone is in some underage Domincan boy prostitute.

  4. ElBruce says:

TP, Rush Limbaugh does not rate this many posts in one day. Not in a week. Please make the hurtings stop.

Although it might be fun to get every GOP’er in Congress on tape and force them to deny they know him or kiss his butt, I’d rater see all of those wrapped up into one study.

  5. belac says:

Of course, the fact that Rush is a blob-like creature supported not by bones but in fact by a series of fluid filled sacs may have something to do with that…

  6. krystalviews says:

It’s not the bones that are racist, its every FIBER of his being !

  7. octamethyl says:

I don’t believe Rush has ANY bones in his body.
He’s more of a putrid, gelatinous blob of hate.

  8. Marie says:

Obviously Pence, is brainless, having only bones in his head.

  9. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

Rushing to the bottom? Rush is just a worthless, lying, racist pig, but his time is past, since the former dictator Bush is no longer in power…

  10. Jackie says:

Rush’s words speak for themselves. Don’t forget the racist song he gave live on his radio show and even had the RNC pass out CD’s. Rush has a problem with woman too. But Rush does like to rape little girls and take drugs. Notice his trips over seas to poor area’s where he rapes little girls. Then he still uses drugs with the help of the White House Attorney General appointees by the Bush Administration. Foley even walked away to continue to look for young boys to rape.

  11. Marie says:

Do we need any more proof that repugs do only what they’re told, that they walk and talk in lockstep, never checking into whatever it is they are defending?
    Pence absolutely ridiculous.

  12. misshusseinmolly says:

OK, this is the FOURTH Limbaugh thread today. Can we stop now?

  13. raynman says:

He’s a man about opportunity of all Americans, regardless of race, creed, or color.

Rush is an a**hole to everyone who doesn’t agree with him….

  14. Zimzone says:

This from the guy, Pence, who compared Baghdad to an Indiana flea market, with a 150 armed troops behind him & Blackhawks hovering overhead.

Rush is a parasite, sucking the goodness out of American minds.

Let’s stop letting our wonderful Country be used as the host for parasitic & perverted minds like Lush & Pence.

  15. Nevar says:

    From Wikipedia…
“During an April 2007 visit to Baghdad, (Mike)Pence and John McCain visited Shorja market — the site of a deadly attack in February, 2007, that claimed the lives of 61 people. During the visit, Pence wore a bulletproof vest and was accompanied by 100 soldiers in armored Humvees being protected from above by US attack helicopters. He described his heavily-militarized visit as being “unfettered” and “like a normal outdoor market in Indiana in the summertime.”[9]“

  16. DutchHenry says:

Priceless, waiting for Repukes to admit racism. My goosh how funny.

  17. Ape-Man says:

Here’s a guy who admires and cherishes Limba. No question he bends over and holds his ankles for him too.

  18. Jane E. Schneider says:

We all hope America succeeds. In that vein, we hope our President succeeds. I think Rush Limbaugh — who I admire, and like millions of Americans, I cherish his voice in the public debate — I think that’s what he was saying.

Well, Mr. Pence, you think wrong.

Okay, Norah, maybe I’ll forgive your other earlier remarks.

  19. Nevar says:

    flocking awesome…

  20. Daddy Love says:

Let’s not forget that Rush was forced to resign from ESPN because of his remarks on Donovan McNabb’s race.

  21. DRxJ says:

I,for one, didn’t know Oxybreath held such high power among the government officials.
And I’ll be honest, I’m tired of hearing about this Big Fat Idiot.

As for the racist thing, explain to me again why he got fired from ESPN? It wasn’t for some racist remark towards McNabb, was it?

  22. ralph the wonder llama says:

Let’s not forget when Rush tried to claim on Monday Night Football that Donovan McNabb was receiving acclaim only because he was black and the media “were very desirous” of having a black quarterback succeed.

Nothing racist in that, no sir.

He “resigned” from MNF shortly thereafter.

Thank goodness someone in the media has integrity, even if it’s only MNF.

  23. Perry logan says:

But Rush did say America would never elect a black President. So he’s not Nostradamus either.

  24. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Daddy Love – jinx.

  25. jazz lover says:

if the issue is whether that particular statement was racist, i’d have to say no.
but tubby obviously has issues with black folk and i wonder if maybe as this stuff starts to pile up, the mainstream media will pick up on it.

  26. Kid Charlemagne says:

Pence should explain that to ESPN and Donovan McNabb and the Rethugs now only getting 2% of the black vote.
They’re in trouble with Hispanics too.

  27. TheWatcher says:

    PENCE:
He’s a man about opportunity of all Americans, regardless of race, creed, or color. That’s why he’s so admired and appreciated across America.

He may be admired and appreciated by many people but that certainly isn’t the reason.

  28. ralph the wonder llama says:

Racist NEVER see their own racism.

  29. Leftside Annie says:

Amazing, isn’t it, that the current reichwing meme is that “libs are afraid of Rush Limbaugh!!!”…

But the exact OPPOSITE seems to be the real truth – conservatives and Repukes falling all over themselves to kiss Rush’s as—er, RING.

So tell me again – WHO is afraid of El Rushblob??

  30. ralph the wonder llama says:

    jazz lover Says:
if the issue is whether that particular statement was racist, i’d have to say no.
but tubby obviously has issues with black folk and i wonder if maybe as this stuff starts to pile up, the mainstream media will pick up on it.

Perhaps, if the statement was viewed in a vacuum, devoid of any surrounding context or history, one could make that case, giving the benefit of the doubt, of course.

But racism is revealed through patterns of behavior and of statement.

Rush gave up the benefit of any doubt on this question long ago.

  31. Hoodathunk says:

TP, I agree with ElBruce. Enough already.

  32. Bozo The Neoclown says:

consider the source, this assclown in from georgia. racist is a realtive term here

  33. hanshiro says:

PENCE: I don’t believe Rush Limbaugh has a racist bone in his body.

I agree. There are several…around 206, but not “a” bone..

  34. sectionop92 says:

    Pence may be anatomically correct.

It’s Rush’s bone marrow that is racist and his bones that support bigotry.

Then again, Pence is another Republican obstructionist who will scream that the sky is falling all the way until 2010.

I’m afraid they might run out of material for that in the very near future at this rate.

  35. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Bozo The Neoclown Says:
consider the source, this assclown in from georgia. racist is a realtive term here

    Pence is from Indiana.

Racist is a relative term there, too, but not quite the same as in Georgia.

  36. sectionop92 says:

    ralph the wonder llama Says:

Racist NEVER see their own racism.

They don’t know who is who, even when they have an opportunity to take off the hoods at the KKK potluck dinners.

  37. DRxJ says:

    whoops.
    My bad.
He wasn’t fired from ESPN. He was asked to resign. And he did so, voluntarily.
    FOR MAKING A RACIST REMARK!!!

  38. sectionop92 says:

    Leftside Annie Says:

So tell me again – WHO is afraid of El Rushblob??

Besides the numerous chairs, floor mats and steel girders that need to be replaced on a monthly basis at his studio…about everyone with the ability to form their own thoughts.

  39. Shayne says:

I don’t believe anybody could find a bone on Limbaugh’s body if they had to. Not even a 10 year old Dominican boy.

  40. Shayne says:

These are the same old white farts that called Michelle Obama racist for saying for the first time she was REALLY proud of her country.

  41. Bozo The Neoclown says:

ralph, let’s meet at the common ground…both are repukelicans, ergo, racist sacks of crap.

  42. sectionop92 says:

You could probably find the corpse of a Dominican boy if you fished into the seas of fat on Rush.

  43. belac says:

    Enough already.

The issue isn’t Rush himself… the issue is why do elected members of Congress feel the need to supplicate themselves to an ill-informed, racist “entertainer” on A.M. radio…

On a positive note, If the “base” of the Republican party is so far out of touch with reality, both general and electoral, that they continue to push R’s in Congress further to the Right they will only succeed in helping more R’s in Congress exit stage right… for good, I hope.

  44. NoMoreBush says:

Uh, he got canned from Monday Night Football from making rascist statements about Donavan McNabb. I mean, c’mon.

  46. MapleStreet says:

But he sure has an anti-woman, anti-gay, anti non-white, anti-poor full skeleton.

    NoMoreBush Says:

Uh, he got canned from Monday Night Football from making rascist statements about Donavan McNabb. I mean, c’mon.

He got fired from ESPN’s Sunday Morning Countdown. Believe it or not, history might be a bit kinder on Rush’s stance thanks to McNabb’s failure to succeed on the field and the media’s constant affinity to still look on him as more than what he is off the field than what he is on it.

  49. Wayne A. Schneider says:

And don’t forget that Rush once, very early in his career, told a black caller “Take that bone out of your nose and call me back.”.

Oh, yeah, Rush definitely crosses the line from time to time.

  50. StratRat says:

Pence is correct. But here’s the deal: Pence, himself, is a racist so he cannot condemn another racist. Those who are racists never see how they are bigoted. They never question their beliefs – they merely question YOUR reaction to THEIR beliefs. See how it works? Both Limbaugh and Pence are racists, so they cannot see the error in their beliefs and words. Bottom line on this: The GOP is running faster to gain and maintain Limbaugh’s approval – rather than their own constituants. I guess the GOP works for Limbaugh now, huh?

Oh how the mighty will fall.

  51. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Sorry for the bad link. The second one should have gone here. Enjoy.

  53. belac says:

Even if he was racist, is racism a crime?

    It sure can be, yeah.

However, please do continue to tell all your friends and acquaintances that Rush’s racism is not a ‘crime’… actually the more you can talk about racism and Rush, the better… thanks!

  54. citizen_pain says:

Much like a cornered and wounded animal, Rush and his ilk will wail louder and louder until they finally and thankfully fall silent.

The fact that the GOP praises a man who perhaps is most responsible for poisoning the public discourse and fanning the flames of hyper partisanship, speaks volumes to where the party is heading. A small minority of ultra-right wing kooks, and fossilized hold-overs from the racist 20th century angry white man demographic.

I say this is a good thing. Let them keep groveling for piggy’s sloppy seconds, anointing a TALK-RADIO SHOW host to be the de-facto GOP mouth piece. It’ll take a while, but eventually they will marginalize themselves.

  55. shoeless says:

(Reprint from post #50 in the Gingrey thread)

This shows that President Obama was correct.

Does everyone now see what is going on here? There is such a leadership vacuum in the Republican Party that Rush Limbaugh has become the de facto leader of the party! These guys don’t give a crap what John Boehner or Mitch McConnell say, because Boehner and McConnell themselves are taking marching orders from Limbaugh. They will follow their fat idol to the ends of the earth, and is just where he is leading them. I hope all of America is watching this absurd spectacle.

    Entertainer my a$$!

Gawd, I hope “LT” doesn’t apply to some military rank, cuz I’d h ate to think anybody would ever have to depend on your judgment.

By “his mentors,” I presume you mean Rev. Wright, posibly Rev. Lowrey?

Correct me if I misunderstand you, please.

Or do you mean Ronald Reagan, of whom Prez.O has often expressed his fond admiration?

  59. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    LTdan,

Why don’t you try to beat up a black guy while calling him racist names, and see how much extra prison time you can get. Yes, racism can be a crime.

And there should be no doubt about Limbaugh’s racism. He has demonstrated it on numerous occasions. Sometime in the 80s, he said, “Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?”

Yeah, try to tell me he’s not racist.

  60. KayInMaine says:

I think it’s terrific that the neocons in America cherish Rush Limbaugh, because it will be a sure win for the Democrats in 2010. Thanks neocons! Keep publicly stating how much you love Rush!

  62. Kid Charlemagne says:

One thing is for sure, Rush’s boner isn’t racist; just ask the Dominican Republic.

  63. StratRat says:

The reason LTdan is scared of others is because he knows they would grind him up and spit him out. All bigots are scared of competition and the possibility that another person is smarter and more accomplished than he will ever be. It is purely an instinctual reaction to a perceived threat. Of course, LTdan could always better himself through education and work, but hey, that takes effort – something our troll doesn’t understand. Much easier to stand back and throw rocks at those who are making history. Way to go troll!

Exactly! Middle America is sick to death of right-wing extremism. Yet, the idiot Republicans think they lost the election because they weren’t far right enough. Now, they have fully embraced Rush Limbaugh as their standard bearer, and the whole world can watch them march away into the sunset.

  96. Shayne says:

It’s pretty safe to say that the RNC is paying a nickel a post to trolls like LittleTurd. When they stopped paying they’d lose interest after one of two insults. But when it can buy them a bottle of malt liquor to take back to the double wide they get all kinds of energy.

One of the reasons his first wife left him was because while he was unemployed (and collecting from the government), he couldn’t get his lazy ass off the couch, stop eating potato chips that he bought on a credit card from the local gas station, and mow the lawn. (I am not making any of that up, he said all of this himself on one of his shows.) I am not aware right now why his second and third wives left him, but I wish them well in their personal recoveries. Oh, yeah. He met his second wife (I think, if not the third) over the internet. He was pouring out his soul to her, and she felt sorry for him, and they ended up being married. For a time. I hope she’s okay now. (shudder)

The more that this is brought to the attention of the MSM, the better. Especially when more people just see him as he does his vile schtick. Remember his short-lived TV show? It had to have gone off the air so quickly for the simple reason that even his fans couldn’t stand to look at him, though they’ll hang on his every word on the radio machine.

  110. ralph the wonder llama says:

    sectionop92 Says:

Believe it or not, history might be a bit kinder on Rush’s stance thanks to McNabb’s failure to succeed on the field and the media’s constant affinity to still look on him as more than what he is off the field than what he is on it.

We can debate the relative merits of McNabb’s performance on the field (and as an Eagles fan, i have been witness to a good chunk of it) but the simple fact is that the explanation Rush came up with for McNabb’s popularity was that it as because of his race.

Whether you believe McNabb has gotten more attention or praise throughout his career than was merited or not, I doubt if many reasonably thoughtful observers would attribute that attention to his race.

let’s put it to the test: if McNabb generated more praise because he was black, then other black quarterbacks in the league over the last decade should have received similar accolades, right?

Quincy Carter is a good place to begin. drafted in the second round, started for the Cowboys as a rookie… why didn’t he get the same media attention as McNabb? Maybe because he didn’t win games.

Troy Smith. 2006 Heisman Trophy winner. There’s a guy you’d think the media would get behind, if that was what the media was concerned about. But Troy lost his opportunity to start in preseason and Joe Flacco took over and guided the Ravens to the playoffs.

Jason Campbell has done all right for the Washington Redskins, took them to the playoffs in ‘07 and is a consistent NFL quarterback. Why no media hoopla surrounding Campbell? I mean, if that’s what the media wants, they should swarm the guy. But they don’t.

Perhaps Rush is wrong, that McNabb’s notoriety comes not from his race, but from his personality as a leader, his quiet personal charm as a commercial spokesman and, most of all, his record of having led the Eagles to five NFC championship games in eight years, and one Super Bowl, without a marquee receiver for most of that time.

I don’t know if Rush is racist or not. But, I believe many of the racist comments that people object to is his distain for people being treated differently because they are different.

I think his parity of Barack the Magic Negro, originated because the phase was coined by a black columnist for the L.A. Times. I believe his issue at the time was ‘why can this columnist get away with saying something non blacks couldn’t.

I listen to Limbaugh’s show when black listeners call in. My experience that he doesn’t have an issue with race – he has an issue with liberal ideology. If you consider that 90-95% of blacks vote Democrat, you could see how that difference could be blurred.

  125. backup says:

This is from a Feb 2003 column from Thomas Sowell:

The liberal vision of Rush Limbaugh is that he is some guy who appeals to ignorant rednecks and Joe Sixpacks. As with so many things that liberals believe, they feel no need to test their notions against reality. Actual research on Rush Limbaugh’s audience has shown that they are above average in both education and income.

Anyone who actually listens to Rush’s show knows that those listeners who phone in are usually pretty savvy folks, and clearly a cut above those who phone in on other radio or television programs. But many liberals have such a sense of superiority that it would never occur to them to listen and learn.

Some years ago, the New York Times’ Anthony Lewis denounced Rush Limbaugh in one of his columns — and then admitted, days later, that he had never listened to him. Who needs facts when you are one of the anointed?

Many of the comments sound racist. Sowell is a black man that thinks some of the judgements are misinformed.

I agree that when some of Limbaugh’s comments are taken out of context, they sound racist.

Is Limbaugh a racist? I’m not so sure.

  126. backup says:

And whether or not the ‘parody’ is in fact in ‘parity’ with the column in the LA times is debatable… but the comedy isn’t… Rush should stay away from comedy… and cheetos… both just make him look bad…

what am I saying? How can he stay away from comedy? The man is a walking parody!!!

I think his parity of Barack the Magic Negro, originated because the phase was coined by a black columnist for the L.A. Times. I believe his issue at the time was ‘why can this columnist get away with saying something non blacks couldn’t.

Because the phrase “magic negro” has a specific meaning in the context of literary criticism. I’d explain it, but presumably you can find an Internet yourself. Or not. But you don’t get to just lift it and use it in other contexts, applying it to anybody for any reason. That’s like saying that since the NAACP has “colored” in their name you can run around talking about “colored people.” You don’t even understand what you’re defending here.

I personally feel “El Rushbo” fooled everyone w/ that bit about McNabb.

I watched MNF a couple of times when Rush was still on. Talk about a fifth wheel. He looked SOOOOO uncomfortable in that booth w/ REAL athletes, and they looked like they had no idea why he was there.

I think it was just matter of time before Rush got the boot, for all the right reasons, and he knew it and was afraid it would be embarrassing, on a NATIONAL basis. So he manufactured a non-existent controversy as a smokescreen.

I mean, really… does Donovan McNabb need to defend his record as a pro quarterback? How many times has he played in an NFC championship game? How many Pro Bowls has he been to?

If Donovan had just laughed at Rush and asked him when was the last time Rush had seen the tops of his own shoes, everyone would have LAUGHED at Rush and seen right thru it. As it is, Rush got waaaaaay too much mileage out of that nonsense.

The best way to deal w/ Rush is to laugh at him. And not in a good way.

  144. ralph the wonder llama says:

Wow B-cup, you certainly have a high level for the burden of proof of racism.

    Look at the pattern.

Everyone in the public eye is going to check impulses that might threaten a career. No one with any kind of sense of career self-preservation is going to meet the burden of proof you have set here. Racist thoughts will be couched in language just obscure enough so that your like-minded audience will get what you’re saying, but your statement can be defended before fair-minded folks like yourself who are willing to give the benefit of the doubt.

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “dog whistle” right?

But the pattern is clear. The fact that a single far-right columnist who happens to be black and thinks Rush is a super swell guy hardly excuses the long, long pattern of racist comments and attempts at humor that constitute Rush’s body of work in this area.

  145. backup says:

ralph. Here’s from the link when people were calling in to congratulate Rush on his 20 year anniversary:

HUTCH: Hey, Rush, how you doing? This is The Hutch. Just wanted to call and congratulate you on 20 years. That’s come from the only true black friend you have. And don’t even go down the road about Bo Snerdley. He works for you. You pay him. He has to smile at you. But I am the man who does it for free. Hey, bro, congratulations, and when I get my jet certification, I’ll even fly your jet for free ’cause that’s the only way we gonna hang out. Love you. Have another great 20 years, and I hope I’m here to hear every one of them.

Does this really sound like the kind of relationship you would have if you were a racist?

I’m not dismissing the comments. My point is that they have an ideological origin, not a racial one.

So… your point is that because Rush lets some like-minded black folk hang out with him, he’s not racist?

Again, B-cup; racism is not limited to an active and public aversion to other races. Since that kind of attitude went out of fashion among decent society a few decades ago (in most parts of the nation, at least) anyone who harbors any racist feelings and wants to be part of decent society (or wingnut society, as the case may be) will avoid expressing those attitudes. But they will come out, especially if one makes a living talking extemporaneously over the radio.

  150. backup says:

rhf. you can insinuate that Clarence Thomas, Ken Hutcherson, Bo Snerdley, Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams are ‘uncle toms’ based on there relationships with Limbaugh – and you consider him the racist?

    Backup Says

My experience that he doesn’t have an issue with race – he has an issue with liberal ideology. If you consider that 90-95% of blacks vote Democrat, you could see how that difference could be blurred.

no, b-cup, I don’t see how that difference could be “blurred”. If Rush had a problem with liberal ideology he would criticize that ideology. He would not have to mention race at all.

Yet he calls the president a “little black man-child”.

He revels in a parody song “Barack the Magic Negro”.

He attributes Donovan McNabb’s success to his race.

He says that he and his fellow pundits are supposed to “bend over and grab their ankles” BECAUSE THE PRESIDENT’S FATHER WAS BLACK.

That’s not “blurring a line”, B-cup. That is focusing on race as a defining characteristic of other human beings.

    THAT is racist.

  152. backup says:

Wayne. Republicans have a problem with the associations you mention. They need to do a lot more to distance themselves from those characterizations. you’re right.

  153. ralph the wonder llama says:

B-cup, why do you keep insisting that having black folks in your circle of friends means you’re not racist?

This is what I meant by your incredibly high burden of proof of this judgment.

For someone to be characterized as a racist for you, it seems one must behave like George Wallace or Sheriff Jim Clark.

rhf. you can insinuate that Clarence Thomas, Ken Hutcherson, Bo Snerdley, Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams are ‘uncle toms’ based on there relationships with Limbaugh – and you consider him the racist?

Interesting. I’m going to have to watch All in the Family again, this time with a new understanding of Archie’s open-mindedness.

    Thanks, b-cup.

  155. backup says:

ralph. I disagree. If you consider the little black man-child comment, the McNabb comment, and the grab you ankles comment – he is refuting the idea that equal treatment isn’t being exercised in those instances. If he thinks (rightly or wrongly) that Obama or McNabb are being held to a different standard due to there race, it seems legitimate for him to refuse to accept what he believes is a double standard.

The Barack the Magic Negro was a statement about the double standard of how a black liberal columnist from the L.A. Times could call candidate Obama a Magic Negro and conservatives could never get away with it – another double standard.

I think the comments set Rush back. I think they hurt the Republican party, because of what Wayne says above. And they definitely fuel Liberals.

But, to the heart of the thread, is he personally a racist? I think there is enough evidence from his personal relationships that cast doubt on that assertion.

If he thinks (rightly or wrongly) that Obama or McNabb are being held to a different standard due to there race, it seems legitimate for him to refuse to accept what he believes is a double standard.

The point is, b-cup, that he thinks they’re being held to a different standard because he’s focused on their race. If there was some demonstrable disparity of treatment in either case, you might have an argument. But both statements are patently absurd.

Obama was elected president, we’re in a national crisis, and conventional wisdom says to support our new president, who happens to be very popular. The pressure to support him and to see him succeed has nothing to do with his skin color. Yet that’s all Rush sees.

The Barack the Magic Negro was a statement about the double standard of how a black liberal columnist from the L.A. Times could call candidate Obama a Magic Negro and conservatives could never get away with it – another double standard.

Why does this have to keep getting explained? The column in question discussed a well-known literary device and suggested Obama might be filling that “wise and serving black man” role for many. The phrase “Magic Negro” is a useful one in criticism and not a simple racial epithet.

Is this the sense in which the parody song uses the term? No. It uses it to cast ridicule and scorn on the Democratic candidate for president based strictly on his skin color.

In other words, B-cup, the columnist used the term responsibly, the “parodist” simply used it as a punch line.

I think the comments set Rush back. I think they hurt the Republican party, because of what Wayne says above. And they definitely fuel Liberals.

But, to the heart of the thread, is he personally a racist? I think there is enough evidence from his personal relationships that cast doubt on that assertion.

Yeah, the pattern of racial comments means nothing compared to who’s in his “Five”.

    Good point, B-cup.

    Was I wrong about that?

Are you still yapping? Did you want to talk about anything specific?

  160. dbadass says:

I like ralph’s questioning technique. What do you think glezzery?

  161. dbadass says:

Liberals don’t get to tell folks who they should or shouldn’t listen to.

    —-
Than why should conservatives care who I do or do not F uck?

OUCH! That’s gonna leave a mark.

  163. labman57 says:

    Racist bone? Perhaps not.

    Racist brain? Definitely.

    backup Says:
Wayne. Republicans have a problem with the associations you mention. They need to do a lot more to distance themselves from those characterizations. you’re right.

NO—-they use such characterizations to gain a certain percentage of votes—-those of the racists. “Vote for liberals and your children will have to go to school with Blacks.” “Vote for liberals and Blacks will take your job.” “Vote for liberals and a Black man will marry your daughter.”

They realize it is best to use code. That way they can get the votes of racists and not lose the votes of people who oppose racism.

    glezzery Says:

I understand COOLING when i see it!

So regardless of the data, you’ll only accept global warming when there’s no longer any such thing as “winter.” Brilliant.

    .

    backup Says:

ralph. did you consider my point that because blacks vote Democrat at a rate of 90-95% that the distinction could be blurred?

That was only this election. Have you considered that black people have been driven away from the Republican party in droves by all of the racist behavior of Republican mouthpieces and elected officials? The party has control over what kinds of people it attracts, through its positions and behavior. Although it has made a few overtures at attracting black people, those are quickly undermined by a wide variety of slights and clueless behavior.

    .

    backup Says:

rhf. you can insinuate that Clarence Thomas, Ken Hutcherson, Bo Snerdley, Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams are ‘uncle toms’ based on there relationships with Limbaugh – and you consider him the racist?

I don’t know too much about the other guys, but I can definitely assert that Clarence Thomas is an “Uncle Tom” based on his long and distinguished career as one. But none of that absolves Rush from the things he says on the talky-box.

    .

    backup Says:

If he thinks (rightly or wrongly) that Obama or McNabb are being held to a different standard due to there race, it seems legitimate for him to refuse to accept what he believes is a double standard.

The assertion that there is a double standard, based on no evidence, is a racist assertion. There is no other reason for it than Rush’s own cognitive filter.

    .

    backup Says:

The Barack the Magic Negro was a statement about the double standard of how a black liberal columnist from the L.A. Times could call candidate Obama a Magic Negro and conservatives could never get away with it – another double standard.

I already discussed this. There are appropriate contexts in which certain terms may be used, and you should know that to lift them out of those contexts amounts to a racist insult. The phrase “magic negro” as used in the LA times article was employed in the appropriate context. It was not appropriate the way it was used in that song. In fact, the use of the term “negro” in the original context intentionally points out the racism inherent in the use of that literary device.

Rush just said it because he thinks its funny to say “negro” a lot, and he is ignorant enough to believe that the LA Times article gave him a free pass.

    .

    backup Says:

But, to the heart of the thread, is he personally a racist?

As opposed to what, just professionally? I would think you’d have to actually be one to do it as a career.

  166. ucsbclassics53 says:

AHHH, glezzery, you never answered my question. Do you support e.coli and salmonella?

Rush Limbaugh has a racist bone in his body every time Bill O’Reilly mounts him.

    LTdan Says:

Even if he was racist, is racism a crime? If it was, obama and his mentors would be in jail for being so racist.
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Did anyone call for his arrest? The rest of your post was so boneheaded and ignorant that it embarasses our entire species. You pompous, ignorant, lying, racist, moron.

  170. EugeneDebs says:

    LTdan Says:

You are a liar and a fool and an ignorant piece of garbage. Do the world a favor and take a swim toward Hawaii

  171. EugeneDebs says:

    LTdan Says:

Strat rat, obamas making history alright, history of being the worst elected official EVER. And I doubt barrack is smarter than me.
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

After about a week as president? You really are a world class cretin. He will have to try HARD to be worse than Bush. He couldnt possibly be by accident. As for the rest you monumentally ignorant punk. My GOLDFISH is smarter than you and he is DEAD.

  172. EugeneDebs says:

    backup Says:

I don’t know if Rush is racist or not. But, I believe many of the racist comments that people object to is his distain for people being treated differently because they are different.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Really? Can you explain his comment to a caller to take that bone out of his nose and call him back or his idiotic claim that Donovan McNabb was only considered a really good QB because he is black even though his stats made him one of the top four of five QBs in the league?

I think his parity of Barack the Magic Negro, originated because the phase was coined by a black columnist for the L.A. Times. I believe his issue at the time was ‘why can this columnist get away with saying something non blacks couldn’t.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Well you are wrong. I assume you mean parody except it wasnt a parody it was an excuse to call Barak a negro over and over and NO it wasnt coined by the columnist. I read the term used by Spike Lee at least a year before that column came out. He was complaining about a type of character like Bagger Vance or the character in the Green Mile that is black and supernatural and exist to serve the white man. I think his argument was strained but it was a legitimate race relations discussion. What Limbaugh did was flat out racist and it is just silly to accept his self serving argument that he was just doing what the columnist did because that is not only dumb it is an outright lie. The columnist WAS using the term as it was meant to be used even if HE also strained logic to make his argument. Rush just used the term to call Barak a negro over and over and there was NO legitimate point to it.

  173. heard_enough says:

Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a man’s sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true. -Martin Luther King, Jr.

  174. ucsbclassics53 says:

LT Dan! I’m glad you’re here. Surely since you are a Bible-fearing pious man, you would condemn Delaware’s credit card companies for profiling their customers and charging high interest rates. After all, usury is forbidden!
