Earlier this week, under pressure from conservatives, President Obama agreed to remove a provision expanding access to comprehensive family planning services for low-income women from the economic recovery package. But TPMDC reports that at yesterday’s Lilly Ledbetter Act signing ceremony, Obama assured attendees “that the family planning aid would be done soon — perhaps as soon as next week, when the House is set to take up a spending bill that would keep the government funded until October.” As ThinkProgress reported earlier, the CBO estimates that this provision would save the government around $700 million over 10 years.
Good.
January 30th, 2009 at 12:55 pmIf at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
January 30th, 2009 at 12:57 pmWonderful. There was no reason to take it out in the first place, except to appease the republicans. Since they won’t vote for it anyway, he might as well just put it back in.
January 30th, 2009 at 12:59 pmWhich leads me to believe it was always intended to be yanked from the stimulus bill to begin with. Put it in there, then show how magnanimous you are by taking it out (knowing it’ll come back).
They (Dems) knew the sex/genitalia obsessed tightwingnuts in the House would pounce on it – and they performed like the diseased Pavlovian lil’ dogs they are. lol
January 30th, 2009 at 1:02 pmGood for you, President Obama. :)
January 30th, 2009 at 1:04 pmtightwingnuts
Uhhhh, rightwingnuts. Or maybe I meant to call the righties tightlywoundnuts.
Who the hell knows?
January 30th, 2009 at 1:04 pmlokidog, I doubt there is anything tightly wound in a Repug.
January 30th, 2009 at 1:06 pmObama never intended to drop the funding, just changed the spending bill in which to include it.
More than one way to skin a cat. Obama and his team can be described in one word – BRILLIANT!
PEACE
January 30th, 2009 at 1:07 pmThe righties do get mighty tightly wound when discussion turns to genitalia. Insecure much?
January 30th, 2009 at 1:07 pmA slap to the House Republicans, perhaps?

I stand corrected:)
January 30th, 2009 at 1:13 pmGood for Obama. He tried to be bipartisan with the Republicans and he tried to play nice. Now it’s time for him to take the gloves off.
January 30th, 2009 at 1:29 pmEvery compromise made for repubs should be retracted. As long as they are going to continue their partisan, obstructive ways, they shouldn’t get any concession. The family planning funding should just be put back in, it should be increased.
January 30th, 2009 at 1:29 pmIt’s a fair tactic. Offer them concessions, and if they don’t vote for the bill with concessions, reverse them in the next bill down the line. Repeat as necessary.
That way Obama gets everything he wants so long as the Republicans remain recalcitrant, which is the exact opposite of the effect they’re going for. Their only chance of having any impact on legislation would be to deal. Hopefully eventually that will sink in to their exceptionally dense craniums. But even if it doesn’t, he continues to look bipartisan, they continue to look obstructionist, and he still gets all the legislation he wants.
Reminds me of this picture, which is good to look at whenever you start getting worried.
January 30th, 2009 at 1:31 pmHa! I thought he would, or family planning would be added to a more generic medical-aid bill. It was moronic and cruel of the Repugs to oppose it.
January 30th, 2009 at 1:33 pmI love that picture, ElBruce. Thanks!
January 30th, 2009 at 1:34 pmAnyone surprised?
RWer’s love zygotes!! They just adore those teeney, weeney, microscopically cute dots! After you’re born, eat TRASH!

___________
Or introduce it as a separate bill and name it for the single mother who gave herself octuplets.
January 30th, 2009 at 1:41 pmEXCELLENT!!! If the GOP won’t play ball, then they don’t get any of their incentives. Restore the bill to its original form and leave Boehner crying in the dust.

Or put them on. Like the old Greco/Roman cestus. Padded gloves are for wussies.
January 30th, 2009 at 1:45 pmWho already had 6 children before that. Misuse of our medical care in America…women taking fertility drugs while other children die of preventable diseases……the inequity is appalling.
January 30th, 2009 at 1:50 pmObama is our Road Runner! He is always out foxing Wile E. Coyote…

January 30th, 2009 at 2:05 pmHow cool is it to have a president that understands the process because he’s been there??? He KNOWS how to make the “sausage” and is using this knowledge to outwit the forces of evil.
January 30th, 2009 at 2:06 pmNow…..reinstate more infrastructure and reduce tax cuts in the stimulus package and we’re good to go !!
Hell yes! The phony Chistyun Repukes don’t care enough about their stated position to honor their own negotiations. Besides it is very expensive to have unwanted children.
January 30th, 2009 at 2:06 pmHa, funny. I hope they pull this a lot. Take it out of a huge bill so Republicans will shut up, then introduce it as its own thing later so it gets some attention and then when the Republicans don’t vote for it again… who cares? With a majority it’ll still pass through.
Yay.
January 30th, 2009 at 2:50 pmThis headline if true is fantastic!
That’s leadership. Proud and true.
May it be the beginning of a new trend. Democrats with spine.
Republicans wetting the bed and sucking their thumbs.

Do the world a favor. DO. NOT. BREED.
January 30th, 2009 at 3:08 pmI think Obama is taking his cues from the posters at TP ! I have been very favorably impressed by most of what I have seen since he was sworn in !

January 30th, 2009 at 8:22 pmThen who makes up the “just barely over” 50 percent?
Whites? The majority?
