Can you say “puff piece?” The American Prospect piece doesn’t mention how a whore automatically qualifies to know reform. There’re mentions of bodies buried, but that works both ways, as Daschle has a few the industry could exhume too.

The point I had heard previously was that Daschle was extremely wonky about health care stuff and he knew how to get stuff through the Senate. If Obama wants universal health care – or even something close, then Daschle’s background will be a plus, not a minus; it’s not like he would or could go against it.

If Obama fails to deliver on health care (and mind you, he never promised universal, but I expect a lot more than we have), I’ll be glad to grab a torch and pitchfork along with everybody else. But cabinet picks aren’t bills. Criticizing his cabinet pics as if they constituted a policy in and of themselves is only reasonable if you think that all of the government agencies are going to be allowed to wander around creating their own policies without any control from the White House. This is not the case.

Most of the discussion I saw on Daschle’s fitness in case Obama was going to pass UHC was from over a month ago. At the time I never saw anything claiming he was a pharma/insurance ogre… until now. As such, it’ll take me a while to go back and find those old links, seeing as how they’ve been buried by people whining about his old tax returns.

I’m just asking what his connection to the firm is, and to what degree he can be associated with everything they’ve done. I don’t see how FISA is relevant anyways. But most of the stuff he’s being criticized for in your cited article is the sort of thing that anybody who’s an expert on health care would be expected to do – advise and give speeches regarding health care details. Either he’s an experienced health care wonk, in which case he’s probably in intimate contact with various segments of the industry – or he’s an outsider, in which case he probably doesn’t know how to make the sausage.

It’s the same problem Obama had with the intelligence picks – everybody’s basically either a criminal or they don’t know what’s going on.

But my main point is that Cabinet members don’t get to just make up policy. Their job is to implement the President’s policies. If Obama tells Daschle to push a bill that’s bad for Big Pharma, then that’s what Daschle is going to have to do. Here’s an old article pointing out why Daschle is good for that role. Happy now?
