During the past few months, President Bush and his closest allies have been working diligently to shape his legacy. Their efforts have included rewriting history in the last days of his presidency, creating the Bush-Cheney Alumni Association website to “set the record straight,” and working on the “partisan” Bush library and “think tank” at Southern Methodist University.
Now, the Dallas Morning News reports Bush may be getting some help from his friends in Congress:
Texas lawmakers are pushing to name a Midland courthouse for former President George W. Bush. [...] Rep. Michael Conaway, R-Midland – Bush’s longtime friend and former accountant – is pushing the idea. All 20 Texas Republicans in the U.S. House have signed on, as well as 10 of the 12 Texas Democrats.
However, the name change would be particularly ironic considering the Bush administration’s penchant for abusing the justice system. Some of the lowlights:
– Bush directly and explicitly ordered torture, including the waterboarding of at least three detainees.
– The Bush administration repeatedly denied the rights of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay until the Supreme Court ruled that habeas corpus protections apply to detainees.
– An 18-month DOJ Inspector General and Office of Professional Responsibility investigation released in September found that the Bush administration fired nine U.S. Attorneys in 2006 for political reasons.
– Bush secretly authorized the NSA’s warrantless wiretapping program which has infringed on the liberties of ordinary Americans.
While Conaway introduced the measure last week, he pushed a similar idea in Congress last spring but “the bill died in committee.” But unlike previous local measures honoring his name, even if the bill passes, Bush “would have to share the honor with his dad and a longtime Democratic congressman.”

the name change would be particularly ironic considering the Bush administration’s penchant for abusing the justice system.
not sure I can agree with this.
I think Republicans and BushCo in particular have killed irony.

In Illinois, the day after the governor was impeached, the tollway signs bearing his name were removed.

To try and correlate from what’s happening on a television show to what the military is doing in the real world, I think that’s ridiculous.” Does he mean he doesn’t believe the reports of 24’s influence? “Well I haven’t read all those reports. But if that’s actually happening, then the problem that you have in the US military is massive. If your ethics in the military, in your training, is going to be counterminded by a one-hour weekly television show we’ve got a really big problem.” His growl grows heavy with contempt. “If you can’t tell the difference between reality and what’s happening on a made-up TV show, and you’re correlating that back to how to do your job in the real world, that’s a big, big problem.”
There ya go, straight from Jack Bauer’s mouth.

The sign-removal task should create a few jobs. Can you believe these people, Marie? They want to name a courthouse after a man who trashed the constitution and everything it stood for, including the Rule of Law? No. Make that “especially the Rule of Law”?
I would like to know exactly what connection there is to George W. Bush and a courthouse? Any courthouse. He’s been trying his damnedest to stay out of them.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:35 pmI say name the courthouse after Jack Bauer.
I think that might scare the crap out of any defendants. Especially the innocent ones.
February 3rd, 2009 at 7:36 pmMidland Texas…No quality of life at all – 5/11/2008
“I have lived many places in the US and none of them come close to the misery of living in Midland-Odessa, West Texas. This town takes stupidity, incompetence and the phrase ‘Hell Hole’ to a new level. I had the misfortune of living here for 18 months and I never knew just how bad and how miserable a town could turn someone’s life in to. The simplest, most common things become a nightmare when living in Midland.
To start, eating out is a sheer waste of time, money and mental stability. Not one restaurant was able to provide any level of customer service. Wrong orders, cold food, terrible service and incompetent staff ensure your dining experience is one you will never forget. From major restaurant chains to locally owned, customer service left Midland for another galaxy.
I have driven in New York, Chicago, L.A. and Houston and the driving there is absolute pleasure compared to Midland. Not one person in this town can drive without cutting you off, changing lanes at the last minute and thinking there doing nothing wrong. Great house elementary has mothers dropping kids off or picking them up all just to try and cause an accident. So many of them would try and run you off the road, pull out in front of you when you had right of way etc. The loop (Loop 250) is terrible, with every inbred redneck waiting until the last second before ramming you off the road for the next exit. I had a 7 minute drive to work and it was a nightmare.
Stores. Everything I bought, from furniture to tires to groceries. Nobody could sell anything without it being damaged, incorrectly ordered, not working or past is sell by date. Customer service, again, was none existent. People were so arrogant that they thought they could treat you like garbage and you would still pay up with a smile. The people are vile.
Midland is also a dump. They have an optional litter fee to help clean up the town, but the place looks like one big pigsty. At least in Great house, the garbage was everywhere. Filthy place. Of course, when you didn’t pay the optional litter fee with your water rates, the incompetent idiots in the cities billing department tried to charge you fees for not paying.
Our neighbors all had dogs that barked continuously. Despite city ordinances, which were never enforced, we were rarely able to sleep. So much for you property tax going to work, which was also as high as the local thieving council could possibly assess your home for.
Midland is close to nowhere and is literally the a** end of Texas. It earns this reputation as well. The people are unfriendly, arrogant and completely without any pride in what the do or who they are. I urge anyone who is considering moving here to think again. L.A., New Orleans – freaking Baghdad would be a better choice than this miserable hole.”

February 3rd, 2009 at 8:06 pmWhy name the courthouse after Bush? Is there something terribly wrong with it?
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:09 pmAgree with the sentiments here. It’s Texas so not surprising and honestly couldn’t care less what they do in Texas because they’re all friggin’ nuts anyway.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:11 pmlet me tell you. if i ever had a court date in a courthouse named after 43, i would hightail it out of the state. you know they’d torture your arse gitmo-style in the holding cell.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:11 pmYou’re giving Texans way too much credit if you think a war crimes charge would make them change the poorly chosen name to anything else.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:16 pmWhat’s the surprise..?!!
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:16 pmIn Texas there are schools named after Bush the father,Ronald Reagan..and even a school in Houston named after mother Barbara Bush…,another one in San Antonio also named after her.
This is to raise a whole new ganeration that is going to be in love with Republicans in general, and the Bushes in particular.
But I’m still waiting to see a square named after Bush,Jr. downtown Baghdad by jubilant and freed Iraqis, as Chief NeoCon Richard Perle once said the Iraqis will do.
Midland TX?
Really?
If he’d settle for that, and then just go ghe phuque away, it’d be a small price to pay.

February 3rd, 2009 at 8:31 pmNothing surprises me about these people, even naming a library after Joe The Plumber.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:31 pmLet’s come to a bipartisan compromise. They can name the courthouse after Bush if they have a video playing of someone being waterboarded.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:36 pmI think it would be more fitting to name a Chucke-E-Cheese after these clowns.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:37 pmI think every dump and sewer treatment plant should be named after Bush and his buddies, that way future generations will know exactly what this administration produced.
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:42 pmProblem is that there are no longer any dumps. Still can we name all the “sanitary landfills” after him?
February 3rd, 2009 at 8:47 pmwell, the SCLM has managed again to change the subject…

February 3rd, 2009 at 9:14 pmWhat is it with Republicans that they can not even wait for the f**k to die before name something after him.
February 3rd, 2009 at 9:57 pmI hope they do. Hope they rename the entire state after this war criminal. We need to always remember what state gave us that nightmare.
February 3rd, 2009 at 9:57 pmJeez wasn’t that sewage plant in California enough?
February 3rd, 2009 at 10:11 pmWell, after surviving the eight years that future historians will simply refer to as, The Terror, I suppose a little trash talk about Texas was inevitable, but it’s time to tap the brakes my Democratic brethren. Remember, the Bush cancer may have started here, but it needed interstate cooperation to metastasize. So bag the cheap shots and consider all the money and votes that insurgent Texans smuggled north during the Battle for BHO, not to mention all the bar fights we got into and eventually lost over that movie that came out in the 90’s, The Big Lewinsky.

February 3rd, 2009 at 10:31 pmPolitics under the overly long run of the Democrat and Republican party has turned government into a fantasyland. They don’t understand how many people are sick of them and on to them. They want to do something truly constructive with Bush’s image? Etch his portrait in the bottom of urinals. That would give the patrons something to aim at and make a little less work for the custodian.

February 3rd, 2009 at 11:54 pmWho are the Texas Democrats that voted to help with this sterling effort? How do you resurrect a corpse? Shame on them. Texans or not they should know better. Although if they knew better they would not live in Texas. They are actually Republicans.

PeorgieTirebiter 10-4 on the pliers. “In the beginning there were hot lumps. . . cold and lonely. . . they whirled aimlessly through the silent halls of space”. . . and they became Republicans.
February 4th, 2009 at 12:57 amName the State of Texas after Bush and it still won’t help him repair his legacy. He is the most disrespected President in history. In fact his entire 8 years in that venerated office was an expensive JOKE. I’m beginning to wonder if Democracy isn’t also a joke. Obama’s government is having it’s share of political upheaval. But at least, Obama can put together a sentence and he seems to believe his own message. Obama thinks that Republicans will eventually step up to the plate and cooperate. I think he’s dreaming. They will never knuckle under no matter what the consequences. They are self serving criminals and should be treated as such.
February 4th, 2009 at 1:16 am.
In times where up is down, in is out and the right is correct, how fitting that a court house be named after the most lawless, war criminal of a president this Nation has ever seen. I say let them name it after George Worst Bush as a fitting reminder for generations to come, that it was this man, George Worst Bush, who destroyed Justice not only in America but it’s effects world wide.

He established a rule on his employees that they could not hire ex-lobbyists without his personal approval. How many officials worked in the Bush administration who had been lobbyists for the same industries they were supposed to be overseeing? Hundreds? Thousands?
