Tammy Duckworth tapped for Assistant VA Secretary.

tammy_duckworth_wheelchair.jpg Today, the Obama administration announced that the President intends to nominate veteran Tammy Duckworth to be Assistant Secretary of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Duckworth, who lost both her legs serving in the Iraq war, is currently director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs and ran for the House in the 2006 elections. From the Obama team’s press release:

As assistant secretary, Duckworth will direct VA’s public affairs, internal communications and intergovernmental relations. She also will oversee programs for homeless Veterans, consumer affairs and special rehabilitative events.

Duckworth was appointed director of the state Veterans office in Illinois in 2006. In previous testimony before Congress, she expressed her commitment to Veterans and the need for transformation of the Department. “The VA system faces new challenges as a result of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.” She also noted “the patient profile is changing. More wounded soldiers are surviving very serious injuries.”

Wonderful, I can’t think of a better person to be able to relate to these soldier’s problems. And she’s a fighter!

  5. Uncle Ho says:

    Bravo! Congrats to Tammy.

I can’t think of a better person in such a position than a disabled veteran. She KNOWS what it’s all about.

She could have been VA Sec by herself. Good to see Obama got her in there somewhere.

#7, is that a real quote pr just a prediction? who can tell the difference between reality and Limpbag’s reality anyway…

  9. mk3872 says:

Meanwhile, why these fantastic picks are buried in the press, we’ll hear over & over & over from Politico, Drudge, FoxNews, CNN, etc. about how Obama has broken his promise of “change” by selecting Daschle and Richardson.

  10. misshusseinmolly says:

The juxtaposition of this item with the “Joe the Plumber” story just below it should hit everybody right between the eyes. The Obama team is making use of qualified people to serve their country. The GOP is making use of clowns to distract and entertain their base.

  11. Uncle Ho says:

I have NO doubt that the big, fat, idiot will call Tammy a “phoney soldier”.

    Proclaims the phoney patriot.

She gave the best speech back at the convention. I’m convinced she could whip the ass of any given goper politician any day of the week.

  22. Canny55 says:

Absolutely stunning. Tammy Duckworth is an honorable woman who, as a veteran of Iraq herself, knows the issues and the costs of forsaking our men in uniform after their tours. Mrs. Duckworth and Mr. Shinseki will make a stellar team.

  23. texaslady says:

Hooray ! Now we need Max Clelland to also advise. With 400,000 vets needing help, only someone who has been there will get the BS out of the way.

Lets see how Fox noise plays this and Rush who supposedly is the champion of the soldiers.

I AM SOOOO HAPPY that Obama wants this lady as Assistant Director of the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs !!!!!!

It is a “Loss” for Illinois, because she is our current Illinois Director of Veteran’s Affairs—BUT—It’s a COMPLETE ***WIN*** for America, and for men and women American Veterans !!!!!!!!!

What a GENUINE HEROINE and ROLE-MODEL this woman is, especially for Veterans returning from War who are maybe thinking that their life is forever messed up—LOOK what this lady did with her life !!!!

EXCELLENT NOMINATION CHOICE, President Obama !!!

P.S. My 89-year old Mother was a World War II Women’s Army Corps Veteran living at the Illinois Veteran’s Home in Quincy, Illinois—-and she and the women Veteran’s there are SURELY PROUD of Tammy Duckworth and what she represents———-Women Veterans have come a LOOOOONG WAY, Baby !!!!!!!

  25. curious says:

This woman is perfect for this. They could not have made a better choice. I wonder if she paid her taxes. No sarcasm here, just hoping nothing comes up to derail her.

  26. Marie says:

    This is a good move.
    Congratulations to Tammy.

  27. Proud American Liberal says:

Well done, Mr. President. A great warrior gets recognized. She will make her country proud, once again.

  28. enough says:

Well done, Ms. Duckworth. Thank you for your willingness to help us try to make things right (given our inability to turn the clock back to 1990).

  29. wiley says:

Let’s hope she doesn’t owe fifty cents in back taxes.

  30. cd says:

I look forward to the day that Senator Webb is VP and Major Duckworth is head of the VA.

  31. peaceandcharity says:

Outstanding choice for a very important position at a critical time. Namaste.
