On the heels of tax controversies involving Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and HHS Secretary-nominee Tom Daschle, Nancy Killefer, who was President Obama’s choice to be the administration’s ‘chief performance officer,” has withdrawn her nomination. Though Killefer “will detail her reason for pulling out later” today, the AP notes that “in 2005 the District of Columbia government had filed a more than $900 tax lien on her home for failure to pay unemployment compensation tax on household help.”
This is what happens when you actually vet your nominees… maybe Obama should have gone the Bush route and just not asked his nominees about their history.
February 3rd, 2009 at 10:52 amJoe the Economist has a tax lien. Why doesn’t HE withdraw?
February 3rd, 2009 at 10:54 amNancy Killefer, whatever may or may not be her “crime,” has enough class and care for her COUNTRY to withdraw rather than cause possible problems for President Obama. She didn’t immediately proclaim her innocence, vilify the opposition, lie with a straight face, indulge in a media blitz, or kiss up to hate-radio/television barkers.

But her issue is something different, it appears.

And, finally, what do YOU care about people paying or not paying taxes? I thought you HATED taxes, in all forms, so anyone not paying them is abiding by what YOU believe in.
Sorry that you have a case of sour grapes.

February 3rd, 2009 at 11:17 amIn light of this withdraw, Daschle should do Obama a favor and also withdraw.
BTW, all of these right wing nuts going crazy over these tax issues to realize these 2 factors:
1. These are coming to light because it was part of the vetting
2. Everyone making such wild statements about paying back taxes probably ALSO have things they should have claimed and did not.
Perhaps if these accountants and IRS officials would also go back and through EVERYONE’s tax history, we would know that:
a. These nomination already paid THOUSANDS in taxes
February 3rd, 2009 at 11:23 amb. EVERYONE owes more taxes than they paid

February 3rd, 2009 at 12:01 pmIndeed, TRoS… especially regarding the Katrina scandal. This administration has yet to coldly turn their backs on their own countrymen on our own shores when they need help.

So dip$hit troll, what do you think about all the Republican’t rich people who put their money in off shore tax shelters to avoid paying income tax. And what about all the Republican’t corporations who incorporate in the Cayman Islands to avoid paying US taxes. That’s a much bigger problem for this country than people who screw up their income tax returns.
I am also willing to bet the farm that if all Republicant’s in Congress were audited, that half of them would have similar problems on their tax returns. It’s too bad that the Democrats didn’t do the same thing to all Bush’s appointees. Bush probably would have had a vacant cabinet for years. But, unlike the Republicant’s, the Democrats cooperated with Bush on his cabinet choices, for the most part.

For me personally, TRoS, it is the holier than thou sanctimony that has characterized much of Obama’s rhetoric that makes waivers for lobbyists and forgiveness of tax cheats so hard to swallow. It was all about change, right? But it sure looks like business as usual.
Another thing: it used to be if you said “Clinton did it” here you were instantly labeled a Troll. There sure seems to be a lot of “Bush did it” flying around…is that a double standard?

Fred. I agree with you here. Of course, the tax issues are embarrassing. And cast doubt on the integrity of some of the choices.
If the tax code was simpler , there would be less opportunity for people to cheat or make mistakes. Maybe a flat tax or a straight lined (sloped) progressive rate that would leave little opportunity for being ’sloppy’. And would make it a lot easier for those that actually want to pay their share.

February 3rd, 2009 at 12:49 pmI find the conservatoid trolls to be highly amusing. Everyone, regardless of political affiliation, has a skeleton in the closet. However, Bill Richardson and Killefer both had the decency to withdraw. Remember that, in the plurality of these cases, it was Obama’s vetting team that detected the tax errors. It would be another thing entirely if they did not vet at all and allowed these issues to ride forth, utterly undetected by the people.
Holder’s issues were non-existent. He made a “NEUTRAL, leaning positive” ruling in a rather complex case. Dashcle is an expert in the field, but it’s a marvelous thing to see that Obama’s team discovered his errors. We will have to see how this case progresses.
