Cheney’s Reprised Scare Tactic: Warns Of WMD Attack If Bush Policies Are Reversed

dickweb.jpgFormer Vice President Cheney sat down with Politico yesterday for his first interview since handing the reigns of power to the Obama administration. During the interview, Cheney wasted no time trying to defend the Bush administration’s unpopular (and perhaps illegal) counterterrorism policies, many of which he created. Cheney warned that if those policies are repealed (as many of them have already) then the U.S. is at greater risk of “a nuclear weapon or a biological agent of some kind” going off in an American city:

I think there’s a high probability of such an attempt. Whether or not they can pull it off depends whether or not we keep in place policies that have allowed us to defeat all further attempts, since 9/11, to launch mass-casualty attacks against the United States.”

Except we’ve seen this movie before. On a number of occasions throughout the past five years, Cheney displayed a knack for trying to scare Americans into allowing him to have his way:

– On electing Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) president in 2004: “If we make the wrong choice, then the danger is that we’ll get hit again — that we’ll be hit in a way that will be devastating from the standpoint of the United States.”

– On electing Democrats to control Congress in 2006: Al-Qaeda and other terrorists in Iraq are “trying to break the will of the American people. They’re very sensitive to the fact that we’ve got an election scheduled.”

Cheney has it backwards. It is the Bush administration’s policies that have left America at greater risk of a terror attack involving weapons of mass destruction. The 9/11 Commission criticized the Bush administration for poor performance in securing nuclear materials. Just last December, the congressionally-mandated Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism found that “the odds that terrorists will soon strike a major city with weapons of mass destruction are now better than even” and that “America’s margin of safety is shrinking, not growing.” The report specifically cited the failures of Bush administration policy :

Though U.S. policy and strategy have made progress, they have not kept pace with the growing risks. In the area of counterterrorism, our government has innovated and implemented new initiatives since 9/11, but its focus has been mainly limited to defense, intelligence, and homeland security programs and operations.

The reality is that it is the policies that Cheney has fought so hard for over the years that have made America less safe. His scare tactics are nothing more than an attempt to salvage his own conscience.

Update Steve Benen writes, "Previous national leaders, once they leave office, usually maintain some sense of decorum, refraining from attacking their successors. Cheney waited just two weeks before accusing the Obama administration of coddling terrorists and putting American lives at risk. Classy."

  2. Chuck Feney says:

This from the man that Bush tasked with the national security portfolio, but failed to hold a single meeting before 9/11 because he was too busy developing his secret, crony energy plan, including the parceling out of Iraqi oil fields.

    Susie, don’t fear the freeper.

  3. ralph the wonder llama says:

    Darth Cheney sez:

“I think there’s a high probability of such an attempt.”

Yeah, well, you also thought saddam had WMD, you thought we’d be greeted as liberators, you thought the insurgency was in its last throes in May 2005…

    Need I go on?

Oh, yeah, and you thought George W. Bush would make a great president. (well, not really — we know you thought he’d be easy to manipulate to achieve the goals of PNAC and make Halliburton rich, but you said that he’d be a great president.)

  4. Technodaoist says:

If an attack happens, it must be because Cheney and crew cared more about rhetoric than actually catching Bin Laden.

Hey Dick, You’re Irrelevant. Go away.

While I can imagine a false flag attack on the US in order to revive the dying Neo con agenda , I believe dying in a (genuine)terrorist attack is about as likely as being struck by lightening ……or a Palestinian rocket attack .

  10. CageyCretin says:

Also, this constant clamoring about imminent major attacks — that should make him a suspect to be carefully observed: he has ties all over the world and COULD certainly be involved in such a thing (if he hasn’t been already), and he also has motivation and an inclination to do so. I conclude that Cheney is a potentially very dangerous terrorist. His extreme partizan mindset would easily justify enabling a major attack on America while Dems are in charge just so that he could blame them for screwing it all up.

I REALLY hope that DHS is keeping a close eye on him, particualrly communications outside the US and with Halliburton and subsidiaries.

W was a deserter during Vietnam and Cheney dodged going in with every ounce of his body. Cowards and rejects all of them.

Let’s be honest here: Dick Cheney is a gasbag.

We were damn lucky that we didn’t get attacked again while Chimpy and Darth Cheney were in power. They got lucky on 9/11 and got handed the disaster that the PNAC crowd has been hoping for. With the attacks and the resulting fear and panic, Bush/Cheney went into full authoritarian mode and finally conservatives had the dream-presidency they’ve wanted for decades.

Dick Cheney should be arrested, frog-marched out of his mansion (or from under whatever rock he’s hiding) and put on a one-way trip to the Hague where he and Chimpy could share a cell and await their convictions as war criminals.

No one should listen to him anymore. Only hardcore dead-enders still think that he did a great job as VP.

Thank God for Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

  34. Marie says:

He’s likely a little pissed off because his war profiteering is going to take a hit.

  35. Marie says:

I think DHS should keep a careful watch on him — I would not put sabotage past Cheney.

  36. DRxJ says:

Dick always states the hypothetical to try and scare us.
But he purposely forgets that it was during his (and Dubya’s) watch (and failed policies) that the United States of America lost 3000+ innocent lives in 1 day.
    This is known as FACT!

  37. Marie says:

Let’s not forget that the exposure of a CIA agent was directed from the traitorous Cheney’s office.

  38. 666lattes says:

  44. ElBruce says:

That sounds an awful lot to me like Cheney’s threatening to attack the U.S. with a WMD if we don’t meet his demands…

    .

    CageyCretin Says:

I conclude that Cheney is a potentially very dangerous terrorist.

How could we find out if he was a terrorist for sure? I’m told there’s only one important tool to be used for getting information out of terrorists.

    .

    Marie Says:

I think DHS should keep a careful watch on him — I would not put sabotage past Cheney.

Ha! The DHS doesn’t just “keep a careful watch” on terrorists. Nor do they pussy-foot around the issue by calling people suspected of terrorism “suspected terrorists.” They’re just straight-up terrorists form the get-go. Then they throw ‘em in Gitmo and torture ‘em to find out if they really are terrorists. So far, they’ve had a 100% success rate with this method.

  45. ralph the wonder llama says:

The thought just occurred to me… I could always see Cheney orchestrating an attack such as 9/11 (not saying he did, mind you… just saying he could) for personal gain or ideological advantage.

But now I’m looking at this article and reading these responses, and it I suddenly realize… if Cheney feels marginalized and ridiculed, I’m sure he’s fully capable of orchestrating an attack just to prove that he was right.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

  46. ralph the wonder llama says:

Obviously, I’m not the only one who feels this way…

  47. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Nova had an interesting program about the NSA last night. It appears that it was the NSA under Michael Hayden who kept important terrorist information from the CIA and the FBI. Strange how the NSA was never mentioned in the ‘official’ 9/11 report or given any blame.

  48. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

I have changed my mind about Gitmo. It should remain open but with two substantial changes: 1) Obama should put Cheney in charge of running it and immediately send him to his office there and 2) all the current detainees should be transferred out for trial.

  49. marlow says:

Shitbird, you had bin Laden surrounded, and presumably his inner circle as well. And you pulled back the troops and sent in a ragtag bunch of Afghanis to do the job. And you didn’t seal the border with Pakistan. So OBL just walked over the border, we’ve all seen the video. Your team of zeros failed utterly; they haven’t attacked us here, because they have been attacking us and training against our bogged down forces over there. You did everything OBL hoped you would do; trampled our freedom, spent trillions of dollars, bogged down our military, and destroyed our credibility abroad. We are isolated, impoverished, and ripe for another attack that no doubt you’ll be overjoyed to exploit again for political gain.
hopefully, hopefully, you’ll clutch your chest, say something stupid like “Eep!” and fall flat on your sneering face before that happens. In God’s name I pray.

  50. mary says:

“When we get people who are more concerned about reading the rights to an Al Qaeda terrorist than they are with protecting the United States against people who are absolutely committed to do anything they can to kill Americans, then I worry,” Cheney said.

What are you saying Cheney?! Are you implying that Obama cares more about terrorists than his fellow Americans? Because if you are, that’s some charge you just threw out there! Barack, I think it’s time to call Cheney in for a chat. And if he has to come with his wheelchair too bad.

It’s hard to not come to the conclusion that both Darth and his evil, more rotund twin, Rush, are actually HOPING for another attack.

Talk about HATING this country, huh?

Darth’s worried about war crimes trials. That’s why he keeps saying this sh*t.

“It was necessary… it was necessary… I made so much money… oops… did I say that outl oud?”

  55. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Think about it. If we have another attack in our country before 2010 or 2012, which party would that favor? Throw in the financial crisis we find ourselves in and the republicans hell bent on bringing down the Obama administration and…

Look what 9/11 did for the republican party. They politicized it to the bone. They held a vote to go to war with Iraq a month before the mid term elections (or was it the Patriot Act?)

The republican party along with the neocons in reality took advantage of and preyed off of the fear, the sorrow and the grief of the American people after 9/11.

  56. The Dogfather says:

Dick clearly has information that we need to get in order to protect American citizens. He should be immediately renditioned to Israel, or disappeared to Gitmo where he can be introduced to “enhanced interrogation techniques” — preferably of the wet variety…

  57. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Mr. Cheney, don’t call us, we’ll call you. As in, “will the defendent please rise…”

  58. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

How do you fight a war against a criminal act?

  59. CageyCretin says:

    ralph the wonder llama Says:

Obviously, I’m not the only one who feels this way…

Not at all! I agree. Wasn’t Cheney involved in the Northwoods project? And I can clearly see him, of all people, willing to kill thousands of innocent people just to “prove” that he was right. Personally, I take this comment of his as direct threat to America — seriously. He is attempting to blackmail the American people through a not-so-veiled threat.

The question is not WOULD he orchestrate such an attack(because he certainly WOULD).

The question is WILL he? He has enough personal allies and cronies.

  60. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Not necessarily. Remember 9/11, when Bush’s approval rating topped 90%? If we had a similar attack, basic patriotism would mandate that everybody got behind Obama. Anybody blaming him would be pushed to the extremist periphery and universally derided as America-haters. That’s just how it goes in the short term. 98. Hoodathunk says:

Let’s look at the track record…an administration that pointed ignored warnings of a terrorist attack, said group then touted a series of lies to engage us in a war that has cost the US billions and transferred a great deal of that to private corporations. The same group defied the Constitution and ratified treaties, ignored input from our allies, defied the UN and then gave $350 billion to private corporations with no strings attached.

So tell me, why does thinking these same jokers would be complicit in a new attack on the US make you a candidate for a tinfoil hat?

Seems to me it isn’t paranois if they really are out to get you.

Man, I wish there was a better edit function here. ‘Pointedly’ and ‘paranoia’. Sheesh.

    Goebbels would be proud.

  101. wiley says:

Big talk from Cheney. Under Bush’s watch we have a missing nuke. An undercover CIA agent investigation nuclear issues in the Middle East has been outed. And we were attacked on 9/11.

It is preposterous for him to equate the prisoners at Gitmo with a nuclear attack.

What he never seems to address is the obvious: Why did our air defense system fail on 9/11? Why has there been no court martial? Why aren’t we being reassured that that failure has been addressed and remedied? Why are we being molested at air ports, when NORAD and the FAA is responsible for our air space?

  102. evenkeel says:

    Dear Mr. Cheney,

Please just shut up and quietly fade away.

    Thank you.

    The American Public

  103. green says:

Yeah right, and there goes that creepy Cheney again attempting to suggest the we have to continue the illegal activities of his administration or face another attack. What hogwash! What is Darth planning anyway? Another false flag operation? Unleashing more anthrax on senators with D’s after their names and journalists who attempt to do their jobs? Will we ever know?

This terrorist needs to be transported to GITMO ASAP!

    rddaos Says:

Look MORON. You are a braindead cretin. You are stupid and have no idea what you are talking about. You are just a coward who learned everything you know about foriegn policy from watching John Wayne movies. You are an idiot. Buhs’s policies have been disasters. Only someone truly stupid like YOU thinks we should do more of the same. You do what is right because it is RIGHT. I know an ignorant coward like YOU wont understand that since it is a moral principle. You just repeat what you were told to believe because you are ignorant. The term Islamofascist is meaningless. It is a made up term that is an oxymoron you were programmed with. We get that you are just stupid and regurgitating is your duty but dont think anyone who knows what is going on is going to take you seriously as anything but comic relief

  105. EugeneDebs says:

Time for Darth Cheney to disappear behind the prison cell door he so richly deserves

  107. Shayne says:

Dickless is getting a lot of negative press for this game he’s playing. Keep talking while you can, traitor.

  108. curious says:

I must say I am surprised that he is still in America. Haliburton is now in Dubai, the land of terrorists financing. I thought he would be gone by now.

We can only hope that all the hate and vitriol he expends might stop his pacemaker. I never in my life have seen such hatred for this country as the Republican party have. Things might change. After all they are now taking advice from Joe, the non plumber. And they are so far down, they are going to groom Sarah, I can see Russia from my window Palin.

When you get this low you can reach up and scratch the belly of a snake. Go ahead Dick, scratch.

  109. sonjafrom texas says:

This whole interview makes me want to throw up. What we have put these “detainees” through is unforgivable…months of torture…for what? Where are the guilty verdicts??? Why is this discussion with war criminals continuing?

  110. vonni77 says:

Scare Tactics work for those who believe liars! This is nothing more than a game of deception. For once the American people appear to be unified by one common goal
_ improving the economy and sustaining a family. They want to divide us and I do hope we don’t fall for it as we’ve done before.

Justification is the key here people as with anything our government decides to do! They need our unified support to do wrong! By any means necessary even if it means planting something and blaming it on an outside faction for them to gain support. The aim is the same, control_ control the masses so they will have them focus on something other than their present situation.

Ending the campaign of terror did exactly what it was suppose to do; make up an enemy and cause the people to hate anyone who did not believe in anything that they believed in. Following liars does not feed our families people!

  111. RescueGirl says:

Our lovely dick failed to mention to pertinent facts: 1) 9-11 happened on HIS watch, in spite of a brief buried on Bush’s desk that clearly warned of the attack; and 2) Terrorist attacks have been foiled without such legal atrocities as the Patriot Act. Case in point: the Clinton Adminstration foiled an attack on LAX planned for New Year’s Eve, 1999. I find it both ludicrous and infuriating that the dick and his dickettes have managed to twist the facts, making a majority of Americans believe Republicans are the only ones who can keep our country safe from future terrorist attacks.

  112. Wang111 says:

I can’t believe Cheney is still free after all of the crimes he committed.

And Cheney is ranting about WMD after participating in the WMD lies that led up to the illegitimate Iraq war?

    Cheney is disgusting.

The American people have been happy to hear that Cheney has been in a wheelchair.
