Kristol: GOP Should Unite Against Economic Recovery Package Now To Help Defeat Health Care Later

On Monday night, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol appeared on Neil Cavuto’s Fox Business show to discuss conservative criticism of President Obama’s economic recovery plan. “I’m less certain than I was even 4 or 5 days ago” that Democrats would push the stimulus bill through the Senate without GOP support, said Kristol. “I do think it’s now a question.”

Kristol then claimed that “the loss of credibility” that Obama and congressional Democrats could incur from the process of passing the recovery package “really hurts them on the next piece of legislation.” Citing the example of Bill Clinton’s experience in the 90s, Kristol said that a united conservative front against the stimulus now could help them defeat health care legislation in the future:

KRISTOL: But the loss of credibility, even if they jam it through, really hurts them on the next, on the next piece of legislation. Clinton got through his tax increases in ‘93, it was such a labor and he had to twist so many arms to do it and he became so unpopular.

CAVUTO: Without a single Republican vote. Without a single Republican vote.

That it made, that it made it so much easier to then defeat his health care initiative. So, it’s very important for Republicans who think they’re going to have to fight later on on health care, fight later on maybe on some of the bank bailout legislation, fight later on on all kinds of issues. It’s very important for them, I think, not just to stay united at this time, though that’s important, but to make the arguments.

Watch it:

Kristol is no stranger to marshaling opposition to affordable health care for every American. In December 1993, Kristol distributed a private strategy document to Republicans in Congress, advising them that they should work to “kill” Clinton’s health care plan. Echoing conservative intransigence today, Kristol wrote that “any Republican urge to help Clinton “do something” on health care “should be resisted“:

The forces advocating reform weren’t prepared for a Republican Party animated by William Kristol’s famous memo, “Defeating President Clinton’s Health Care Proposal,” which darkly warned that a Democratic victory would save Clinton’s political career, revive the politics of the welfare state, and ensure Democratic majorities far into the future. “Any Republican urge to negotiate a ‘least bad’ compromise with the Democrats, and thereby gain momentary public credit for helping the president ‘do something’ about health care, should be resisted,” wrote Kristol.

Apparently, even a fancy dinner with the president can’t stop Kristol from plotting to undermine Obama’s agenda.

Transcript:

CAVUTO: I’ve been actually ignoring this stimulus thing. It’s a fait accompli, it’s going to happen, it could be a waste of money. But I’ve really been focused on what could be the huge and much more expensive enchilada. And that is re-doing, fixing the bank rescue fund and maybe making it a lot bigger. And some of the measures they’re going to take. We’re going to get into the details later on in this show. But that could be really where they go over the top. What are your fears there?

KRISTOL: Well, I mean I have the same fears as everyone. But I would say this, that this is where this thing could really matter. I think they could probably end up jamming the stimulus package through, though I’m less certain than I was even 4 or 5 days ago. I do think it’s now a question. But the loss of credibility, even if they jam it through, really hurts them on the next, on the next piece of legislation. Clinton got through his tax increases in ‘93, it was such a labor and he had to twist so many arms to do it and he became so unpopular.

CAVUTO: Without a single Republican vote. Without a single Republican vote.

KRISTOL: That it made, that it made it so much easier to then defeat his health care initiative. So, it’s very important for Republicans who think they’re going to have to fight later on on health care, fight later on maybe on some of the bank bailout legislation, fight later on on all kinds of issues. It’s very important for them, I think, not just to stay united at this time, though that’s important, but to make the arguments. They’ve got, they really have a chance and the American public’s focusing for the first time in a way on what Republicans are saying since the Bush administration’s left office. They’re making pretty good arguments, I’ve got to say. And I think it’s really helping Republicans build up some credibility for the times in the future they’re going to have to go to the American public and try to take on a President who remains popular. But people can distinguish. They can like and respect Barack Obama and think, “you know what? This legislation doesn’t sound too good.”

The Republicans have nothing to offer this country but obstruction. I so dearly wish the American people would pay closer attention. Eight years of Republican rule have brought this country to its knees. Now they are trying to prevent the recovery we so desperately need from occurring. As the leader of the Republican Party, Rush Limbaugh, intones, they will be happy with nothing less than the failure of America.

Billy, you think we are the same people we were in 1993??? Your an idiot plain and simple. The Repugs will (are) fall like a ton of bricks and the proof is in the pudding….Joe the Plumber attending a economic conference….What a F&^6 joke my friend.

    From TPM’s David Kurtz:

“It occurred to me while reading Politico’s interview with Dick Cheney, that the GOP’s plan to regain political viability in the short term rests on two disaster scenarios: the failure of the financial rescue efforts (stimulus, TARP, and other bailouts) to stave off complete economic collapse and a new mass casualty terrorist attack — both of which they are positioning themselves to blame Obama for.

Without one of those two, they have to figure it’s going to be a long time wandering in the political wilderness. Now think about the curdling effect, the blight on the soul that comes with rooting for such disasters to befall your country. The rot is now eating at the party’s very core.”

Win at any and all costs, right ‘Pugs?

I’m not clear as to why what this guy says matters any more than anything we post in our respective political blog comments. I’ve seen commenters in the blogosphere with far more insight and analytical acumen than anything Kristol has done in the past 9 months (can’t speak to anything before that because I never really paid much attention). Those people are not treated to regular television appearances. When I see him,he is either wrong or silly and typically both.

Both he and Dick Morris remind me of some drunk sorority girl at a college house party who chatters constantly and loudly about her slutty escapades just hoping to be noticed. No embarrassment, no concern whether the attention is positive or negative, occasional hyperbole, and no thoughts about her reputation. That is Bill Kristol. His will to be outrageous gives him a public venue, even when it is something most Americans desperately disagree with.

24-hour news is the worst idea of the last 50 years.

  20. The Dogfather says:

All Billy is doing here is spouting the Squash Limburger line in different words — “I hope Obama fails”.

Hoping the economic recovery fails. Hoping health care reform, providing affordable health care to all Americans, fails. This isn’t just politics — it’s hoping that the American way of life, or at least the recovery of our way of life pre-BushCo, fails.

That’s not just politics, darladooner — hoping that our country doesn’t recover and doesn’t advance just to prove a political point is unpatriotic and potentially treasonous. And that’s what’s so wrong with what these a$$hats are saying and doing, and trying to convince the 23%’ers to follow along with…

  21. A Patriot Acting says:

The Republican party and their BFF’s the neocons have shown the American public these last few days specifically that they do not care about the economy, the People’s will or the day to day troubles that we face as a Nation. Their only concern is regaining power and furthering their warped agenda to it’s conclusion which apparently would mean the incidental demise of America. They don’t care though, all they want is to defeat Democratic legislation…that’s IT! Whether or not it could help struggling Americans gain a leg up is irrelevant to their arguement. Krystol, Rush, Hannity, Beck, Drudge and all their GOP minions on the Hill pray that Obama (and the rest of the US by the way) fail and will work tirelessly to ensure that no help to the downtrodden will be forthcoming. They actually see this as a strategy? Don’t they realize that if America/Obama fails there won’t be any future America for them to regain power in? 12 years of Republican dominance followed by their gleeful obstruction of much needed legislation and we are expected to seek bi-partisanship?? Go Cheney yourselves dry GOP and you can shove your neocons and “think tanks” far up your collective @ss-pipes! We tried your way and now it’s time once again to clean up your mess. We do not need your help, your input or your obstructionism. We DO need to prosecute, convict and make a stark example of some of you though, so don’t go too far. Just sit down, shut the eff up and a grand jury will get in touch with you eventually.

Good plan kristol, 80% of Americans want health care fixed and you come out against it….

    wrong again….not classy but predictable.

  23. MapleStreet says:

The only problem with Kristol is that he doesn’t go far enough.

Instead, the electorate should unite in a conspiracy to make sure the economic recovery fails. If you can’t nuke the banks, at least take all your money out and bury it in the back yard. Take out massive amounts of debt and then default. Give all your money to the rich so they can put it in offshore banks and arrange for their retirement in other countries. When the economy fails, we will have shown those liberals how detestable they are.

If we can get the USA to fail, we will triumph into a glorious new future. Osama ben Laden started the process. Now we can drive the stake into the dragon’s heart.

  24. ElBruce says:

In 1977, Jimmy Carter entered office with one of the worst economies in history waiting for him. In his first four years, the Republicans (even though still horribly discredited due to Nixon and Ford’s pardon) obstructed and blocked every attempt he made to fix it. Carter made things easy for them by being too nice. By 1980, things were only slightly better by the numbers than they had been four years earlier, but were much worse in the public imagination. People were sick and tired of having a crappy economy for that long. So Carter got blamed (for not fixing the Republican mess) and the Republicans won in a landslide in just four years.

The cycle is simple: Republicans destroy everything in two terms, a Democrat wins, the Republicans stop the Democrat from fixing what they’ve destroyed, then the Democrat takes the blame and gets kicked out after one term.

They screwed up their system by winning in 1988 with G.H.W. Bush. He inherited Reagan’s recessionary mess (which should have gone to a Dem), and was blamed for not fixing it in four years, so Clinton manage to slip in. Hitting the economic upswing, Clinton managed to ride it for two terms. If he had chosen to reverse the cycle and left the country a smoking shambles in 2000, that would have left chimpy a one-term President and set up a Dem for two terms to follow.

If Obama fails to push his plans over the Republican speed bump, there’s a very real threat that he will end up in the same trap, and we’ll see a big R victory in 2012. Obama needs to show significant results in his first term.

  25. nanlichi says:

These ideologues are bordering on treason. To oppose the recovery of your country because it’s the other side who will get credit seems treasonous to me. It’s not a case of, “How is the best way to recover” and throw out some ideas, it’s, “I hope they (we) fail”.

And now for a little hyperbole…Shoot the bastards and let them rot where they fall.

TP, you do realize that you may have had the only television in the country not owned by Neil Cavuto that was tuned to Fox Business don’t you? That network gets worse ratings than some public access shows. Kind of a pity because I want lots of voters to see Republican shills like Billy openly plot against the programs of a popular newly elected president. I don’t care if the shills are self-styled patricians like Billy or trailer tards like (not) Joe the (unlicensed) plumber. That’s not the point at all. It is absolutely critical to keep the light on the strategies of Republicans, particularly when they are blatant about the motivations for their behavior. As the post makes clear, Kristol was instrumental in Republican obstructionist strategy in the previous Democratic administration and is simply giving voice to the current strategy.

  34. hanshiro says:

The republicans have declared de facto war against the American public. The corporations will work to undermine any policy that affects their stranglehold on industry, from pharma policy to insurance policy to farm policy. To religious policy.

These aspects are meant to impose limits on public rights. The 5th estate was considered the last bastion of uncovering and speaking truth to power, but as anyone who watched the last 8 years, that notion has been chloroformed.

Because the culture, backed by corporate formula, has conditioned the public to virtually depend on corporations exclusively, (how many people would survive if the local grocery shut down?) there exists little the public can do to directly challenge the monolithic control of conglomerates; with the legal status of a person, but the resources of a god.

Make no mistake, as ADM once put it, the corporations consider the public/customer as the enemy:

The Justice Department’s case hinged on a company executive turned FBI informant, Mark Whitacre, who secretly taped meetings that allegedly included the younger Andreas, Wilson and executives of rival companies. “The competitor is our friend; the customer is our enemy” was a favorite saying around ADM, according toWhitacre.

The republicans, who represent the interests of the corporations ultimately and exclusively, will shamelessly do anything to regain position, only during the bacchanal of the bush years did the mask of pretense slip and reveal the truly callous nature of the Corporate Party.

Kristol is issuing a “call to arms” to defeat the growing grumble against republican obstructionism. Like the degrading success of the AT&T sponsored iPhone immediately following the revelations of AT&T illegally disclosing personal records, Kristol is banking on a hubristic distraction to detour an easily manipulated public.

Usually, the repetitious noise machine is enough. Propaganda.

The question is, would you know what to do if the grocery shut down? The grid? If not, whom do you blame? The grocery, the power company, or yourself for allowing the instinct of common-sense survival to be eroded by the ease of teevee, bulk chips and pizza delivery?

Plant a garden this year. Get a solar device of any sort. Re-familiarize yourself with self-sufficiency. The corporate party is banking on your weakness to keep you tethered to their real constituents; “bush’s base.”

I agree Mary and often wonder about this myself. The bailout was announced in September. Two months before the presidential elections. Could it have been used as an attempt to sway voters away from the less experienced democratic candidate? Just as I believe the Georgia/Russia conflict was started.

Was the Bush administration trying to hide the true shape of our economy until Barack became president so that he and the democrats would take sole blame for it? How many months did Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson tell us that the economy was going strong? How long did President Bush deny that we were in a recession. Perhaps the administration tried pulling the wool over the American peoples eyes but the economy became so bad thanks to the Bush policies, they could no longer hide the fact that they’ve destroyed the economy which is why they needed a massive bailout. Or that as you say, it has been planned all along.

Maybe it needs to get done, but if you look at the costs, it seems like we are in uncharted territory.

So what is the Republican Health Care plan???

If Billy boy is giving his expertise about health care (a non position position)like he did to “validate” the invasion of Iraq (using dubious “sources”), we are really screwed!!!!

  62. wiley says:

“Lose their credibility” how? If everything isn’t peaches withing a week of the bill passing?

  63. Quizmos says:

More drivvel from the Hope America Fails Crowd (HAFC). These guys should start facing some of the heat the Dixie Chicks faced when they practiced their right to free speech. After hoardes of death threats, I think Bush said something along the lines of people having the right to free speech, but not being able to control the response that the public has.

Time for these HAFC types to either leave the stage or face the hook. But if left in the hands of corporate media, they will remain front and center, as though the American People’s decision last November never happened.

Good ‘ol landslide Kristol. When has this guy ever been right? He needs to take himself less seriously.

    drew3rd Says:

Exactly. I am glad to see Billy say this. Since he hasnt been right about a single thing other than his name for about 8 years it bodes well for Dems

    53. Perry logan says- Not to put too fine a point
on it, America has been in a state of civil war ever
since the Republicans stole the 2000 election.

I agree. It looks also like a class war (and boy, do
they hate to hear those words!) Why, I wonder? The
truth hurts. Especially when they’re trying to hide it.

It’s a civil war between classes.

This makes them traitors. Back in 1994, Newt Gingrich
and his pals wrote a little thing called “The Contract
With America.” I heard people say it was more like a
contract ON America. Then there’s the Project For A
New American Century or PNAC. Google it. I think Billy
Kristol’s name is on it. Names of members are at the
    bottom, so scroll down.

hanshiro’s advice is good, about becoming self-suffic-
ient. I’m having to move back into my car in order to
pay for it, and I’m going down to Arizona in case I
have to run for the border. Canada requires a certain
minimum income to emigrate there, but Mexico doesn’t. I I’ve have never been out of the U.S. and won’t go if I don’t
have to. I have other reasons for moving to Arizona
and one is because there is fairly cheap land in east
    central Arizona.

I tried to go to bed a little while ago, but couldn’t
sleep. This mess has got me upset.
of the U.S. and won’t go unless I have to.
