In case it’s the latter, I’ll explain again. Geithner apparently was supposed to pay the normally-employer-paid part of his Social Security taxes, and didn’t do that. That’s an error you or I might make if either of us were in that position. In fact, I’ve never seen or heard of such a thing until I heard about it in Geithner’s case. Neither had you. I know I’ve never seen a tax form with a line-item for “Social Security taxes for you that are normally paid by your employer but which you’re supposed to pay since they’re an international non-profit.” It’s probably on the 1040-QXZ.

Now as a conservative, I’m sure you’d agree with me that the tax code is far too complex, and should be simplified. Not (or not only) because taxes are too high, but because it can turn perfectly normal people who fail to follow all of the complicated necessary steps into de-facto criminals. As such, it’s a tool of oppression. However, if you’re going to argue that Geithner must have intentionally evaded taxes rather than making an understandable error, then you’re basically taking the side of overcomplexity in taxation, by blaming a victim of it. Which would make you a Communist.

But this is a wingnut tactic I’m noticing more and more often – hooting and jeering and blaming someone for making a mistake that you (or most people) would totally make if they were in the same situation.
