Solis confirmation vote postponed.

Solis confirmation vote postponed.

After weeks of Republicans “burying her in paperwork,” the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee was finally prepared to vote on Hilda Solis’s nomination for Labor Secretary today. However, Politico now reports that the scheduled vote has been postponed:

Rep. Hilda L. Solis’ nomination vote has been delayed by the Senate committee in charge of vetting her for the secretary of labor position in President Barack Obama’s Cabinet.

The delay was announced moments after USA Today reported that Solis’ husband had recently paid off $6,400 in tax liens on an auto shop he owns in Los Angeles.

Yesterday, Pat Garofalo predicted that Solis was the right wing’s newest target after Tom Daschle withdrew his nomination for Secretary of Health and Human Services. Today’s Progress Report has more on Solis’s nomination here.

- Matt Finkelstein

Update At his daily press briefing, Robert Gibbs expressed confidence that Solis's confirmation will move forward as planned. Noting that Solis's husband failed to pay a "business tax," Gibbs said, "We're not going to penalize her for her husband's business mistakes."

I like the repug tactic of going after a spouse. Excuse me but he isn’t being nominated!

  2. Jim Wolf359 says:

Precisley Hooda. They are hell bent on stopping her nomination. No tactic is too sleazy for the Rethugs.

  3. Steaming Pile says:

Well, I love how the right wing moves from one target to the next to the next. Moral (for Mr. Daschle, et. al.): Surrender doesn’t end the war. It just gets the enemy further into your territory.

  4. paleolib says:

Time for someone in the White House (and someone named Harry Reid) to drop the “bipartisan” baloney and grow some balls. If a four digit tax issue involving a business owned by a spouse is fair game I suggest the Senate start strictly policing its own conduct. What say they start by expelling members caught violating laws such as say soliciting prostitutes (looking at you Vitter).

  5. Uncle Ho says:

Whatever happened to Rethuglic party outrage about cabinet nominees not getting an “up or down vote”?

  6. Keltoi says:

    From the article:

But in a statement today, HELP Committee Chairman Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) and ranking member Michael Enzi (R-Wyo.) issued a statement saying that Republicans had not placed a hold on Solis’ nomination, as they had threatened to do so.

Teddy is not a Republican, folks. The Dems do NOT want one more tax problem to come before them, three is enough and everytime it happens it blows a news cycle. I suspect they are double-double checking these revelations about her husband to make sure she isn’t tainted. The Dems control this committee, nothing will happen there they don’t approve.

  7. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

In today’s economy, I’m surprised we aren’t hearing about more businesses having tax liens put against them.

  8. tokin librul says:

SOlis will be sacrificed. She’d actually work for WORKERS…

Cant’ have that…too divisive, not post-partisan enough

Her nomination was meant only as a sop to the Liberal/Prog wing, and they are now disposable and dispensable…

  9. Hoodathunk says:

Since the Dims in Congress seem to be sharing a single set of cojones, its hard to take them seriously.

That only applies when the preznit and candidate both have R next to their name.

and I am a resident of Wi. Russ, you don’t have to wait til they pass them to you.

  12. StratRat says:

The GOP also wants Solis to stay out of the business of labor (Card Check). Thats sounds a little odd: A Commerce Sec. being asked to stay out of a ‘commerce’ related topic. The GOP is like a wounded and cornered animal – just flailing about, trying to attack anything.

Do our trolls support GOP obstruction?

  13. Tired Of Fighting says:

This is ridiculous. I knew that those who are charged to run this country would/could not get past their biases, prejudices, hatred, bigotry, whatever you want to label it and come together for the good of the COUNTRY. These moves are to embarrass President Obama and make no one outside of the Male White Wing power structure ever want to run for POTUS ever again. And the fact that there are those with voices who are so afraid to say so really makes me want to ball up my fist and knock the S_it out of a Rushpuppetcan.

Now I know thats rash but in these times its time to fight. The good ol boys (and girls) are telling the majority that we dont give a damn about how bad a shape the country is in, we’re not gonna stand by and let a negro fix it and make us look bad, to hell with that.

All it would take is for someone in the so-called liberal media (who is that btw) to frame it that way and watch out. But we know it wont happen, just pull some old video of the newly invigorized Rushpuppetcans saying the hell with bipartisanship back when the only way was their way, show some footage of Rushpuppetcans saying the hell with “letting you at the table” when they were running things, show some footage of the Rushpuppetcans saying “go Cheney yourself” you effin traitor whenever someone spoke ill of Mr. Bush and his kill the American dream policies.

Stand the eff up and fight.

Question: Do Democrats EVER pay taxes? Apparently NOT! No wonder they are QUICK to spend EVERYONE ELSE’S!! OsiSpeaks[dot]com

  15. McWars says:

It’s funny that one guy with a tax problem gets to head an organization overseeing the IRS, but suspicion out of a confirmed nominee snowballs onto nominees of posts having nothing to do with generating revenue for the U.S. government. Now we’re even branching the blame: While Solis is in Washington representing her constituents, her husband’s accounting somehow becomes her problem.

Maybe the country isn’t trying hard enough. When Obama intends to hit the ground running, congress does the opposite. I think it’s time for some real house cleaning in 2010.

You’re here to lodge a firecracker, I suppose. Blue states pay more in taxes than they take in. Red states figure out how to send the money they should be paying in taxes overseas.

  17. McWars says:

    USA Today:

We reviewed her tax returns and her tax returns are in order. Her husband had an issue.”

Do the Regressives have a mole in the IRS that is illegally prying into the nominees’ confidential records to dig up this dirt?

When is team Obama going to start playing hardball. There is no way to appease Republican terrorists. They finally are admitting they are the American Taliban. Start looking at the Republicans tax obligations and start kicking some ass.

To you two and everyone else: Ted Kennedy is not a Republican! He signed off on this delay. The Dems control the Committee – Relax! If Teddy okayed it, either there is a question he needs answered or there is fire beneath this smoke. Either, way, the last thing Obama needs is more tax controversy.

Yeah Ted signed on so what? That is tactics. I am tired of the politics of guilt by association. I made the proper point. She had no obligation to go over HIS business tax return with a fine tooth comb. SHE didnt do anything wrong. Did TED say she should resign or is he doing what is known as playing the game? The stupid trolls I responded to are worthess had they made a point like YOU did I would have responded differently but no one has shown SHE did anything wrong

My point regarding Kennedy is this: his liberalism is matched only by his political caginess. He is also a staunch Obama supporter, one of the staunchest. Lastly, the quality of his staff’s research powers and attention to detail are legendary. IF he signed off on this, which he obviously did, then there is a good chance he knows something you and I don’t. I know far more about Kennedy’s reputation than I do Solis…everyone here is screaming how this is all the Republicans work. Well, that is factually inaccurate in the first place and premature in the second.

There is such a sense of rush-rush-rush across the board on the Left…there have been enough mistakes made that measuring twice seems wise.

  36. BryanB says:

Many of you need to read past the first 10 paragraphs in news stories. Where the left biased press buries the facts. Hilda is not on hold over taxes -hers or her hubbies. Hilda is on hold because she violated House rules by acting as an unregistered lobbyist and another rule for not reporting her status on House financial forms. BTW it was not taxes for Daschle either but his working as an unregistered lobbyist for health care and others. If they say they they will be the most ethical admin ever grab your wallet -just look at the last 3 examples Clinton (only impeached elected President), Blago (only impeached IL gov) and now Obama who is full of lobbyists despite his promises!

At best Solis should be censured by the House at worst she could be thrown out.
