As Economy Sheds 600,000 Jobs In One Month, Senate Conservatives Ask: What’s The Rush?

Today, the Labor Department reported that the economy lost 598,000 jobs in January, the worst monthly jobs loss since 1974. 1.8 million jobs have been lost in the last three months alone, and U.S. unemployment now stands at 7.6 percent, the highest in nearly two decades.

While President Obama and congressional Democrats are pushing for a recovery and reinvestment plan that the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office predicts would create up to 3.6 million jobs by next year, Republicans are stonewalling action to help the economy recover. Even as millions of Americans are losing their jobs, conservative Senators insist that there’s no rush to help them:

LINDSEY GRAHAM (R-SC): We do not need any more news conferences. What we need is getting more than 16 people in a room. We need to slow down, take a timeout, and get it right.

ROGER WICKER (R-MS): As Thomas Jefferson reminded Americans in his day — and I quote — “Delay is preferable to error.” Let’s not rush into doing this the wrong way.

JOHN ENSIGN (R-NV): So we need to act much more responsibly than this bill acts. It’s still time. There is no hurry.

TOM COBURN (R-OK): There’s no reason for us to hurry up, number one. There’s no reason for us not to look at every area of this bill and make sure the american people know about it.

Watch a compilation:

Speaking to House Democrats last night, Obama emphasized that the soaring jobless rates “aren’t just statistics”; they’re real people who are counting on Washington to reinvest in America’s economic future — and to do it now:

[T]hese aren’t just statistics. This is not a game. This is not a contest for who’s in power and who’s up and who’s down. These are your constituents. These are families you know and you care about. [...]

We’re not moving quickly because we’re trying to jamb something down people’s throats. We’re moving quickly because we’re told that if we don’t move quickly, that the economy is going keep on getting worse, and we’ll have another 2 or 3 or 4 million jobs loss this year.

I’d love to be leisurely about this. … We’re not doing this because we think this is a lark. We’re doing this because people are counting on us.

Jeebus! What does it take for these phuckwads to see we’re in one hell of a mess?

If we were losing 3 million jobs a month, the Rethugs wouldn’t bat an eye.

  2. fergus says:

Memo to Sen. Whicker: just a note to remind you that Delay was a mistake. So is McConnell, Kyl, McCain, Graham and all of the rest of you obstructionist conservatives. Get with the program or get out of the way.

The Republicans are trying to say that none of the problems of the last eight years are their fault and that they possess no responsibilities for the situation the country is in now. What’s even more brazenly shameful, on their part, is to claim that the same ideological failings, that led to an economic situation approaching the Great Depression in severity, is the only solution to the problems that a fanatical adherence to these beliefs caused.

Unfettered negligent free market cultists led to this economic crisis we are all facing now. The GOP are dominated by it’s worshipers. Anything less than pure doctrinal loyalty is, in their paranoid selfish eyes, socialism.

  4. Bobwurst says:

Obama rocked last night! If the republicans are squealing, he’s doing something right.

Did anyone catch the clip of Boxer calling Lindsey Graham a drama queen? It was hilarious.

  5. unbelievable says:

I really wish President Obama could start laying THEM off. Perhaps, then they’d finally get the urgency here.

3.6 million Americans (and counting) strongly disagree with the sentiments of the American Taliban Party.

    BREAKING NEWS…….7.6% unemployment.

So when are they going to start telling the truth?

  8. misshusseinmolly says:

Well, Republicans have always been the “I got mine” party…

  9. unbelievable says:

ROGER WICKER (R-MI): As Thomas Jefferson reminded Americans in his day — and I quote — “Delay is preferable to error.” Let’s not rush into doing this the wrong way.

Jefferson was the Father of the Democratic Party – I hardly think he would have agreed with you. After all, he partly wrote the Constitution!

  10. tom says:

Obama is “fired up and ready to go”. His efforts to engage the republicans and find a bipartisan solution has been admirable. At some time soon, however, it will be time to call the question and leave the seedy minority party behind. The stakes are too high to allow their political motives to get in the way of doing the right thing.

  11. unbelievable says:

Bobwurst Says: Obama rocked last night! If the republicans are squealing, he’s doing something right.

That was another amazing speech. I’m sure the American people, who approve of President Obama by nearly 80%, were moved. Unfortunately, the Republican Taliban cannot be moved by anything except their own greed.

I think we’re gonna see even less Republicans in 2012, and they still won’t get it.

  12. civil behavior says:

    Why must we move quickly?

All the major Banks on Wall St. are seeing mounting losses and the failure of one will increase the losses of the other. They are joined at the hip and will fall like a house of cards.

Our government is covering this up. There is no way they want us to know the extent of the bad paper in the banks. This is so much worse than 1930’s. Over 600 trillion in derivatives out there. Look at that number once again. 600 trillion. Now do your math.

  13. conniptionfit says:

I’ve said it before. Obama and the Dems are making a huge mistake in handling the Re-thugs. The Re-thugs learned their politics at the knees of the likes of Newt Gingrich and Tom Delay. They have no respect for the hand held out in bipartisanship (remember they call it “date-rape”). Any Dem who does had better be prepared to draw back a bloody stump. No, the only way to gain respect and cooperation from those thugs is a fast punch in the face. Then let them mull over where the power is for a minute before offering them a hand up off the floor. Obama MUST deal with them from a demonstrated position of strength, or they will think he’s just another weak-kneed Democrat ala Harry Reid, and run right over him. It’s not pretty. It just is.

  14. conniptionfit says:

And how stuck are we with ol’ Harry, anyway?

  15. unbelievable says:

conniptionfit Says: I’ve said it before. Obama and the Dems are making a huge mistake in handling the Re-thugs.

I think you could be underestimating his strategy here.

He’s shown them inclusion, and this is how they behave? Well, now, he’s showing them that he’s not going to tolerate their antics. He slammed them in that speech last night.

He’s been gracious, and they’ve peed on the rug. Who will the American people support? Obama. Hands down.

  16. Uncle Ho says:

Meanwhile, in their districts, the newly unemployed are sharpening their axes, knives, pitchforks, making torches.

I would love to see these asshats tell an assembled crowd of laid-off workers there is no need to rush. They would not leave there alive.

  17. livelongandprosper says:

We’re doing this because people are counting on us.

Well 80% of the people. There are 20% of the people who believe the government shouldn’t be counted on at all. Right Tim43, TimmyV, Lush, Daryll…..?

  18. DRxJ says:

“As Economy Sheds 600,000 Jobs In One Month, Senate Conservatives Ask: What’s The Rush?”

BINGO! We have our sarcastic winner.
Why the rush, indeed, when you’re guaranteed your job, paid 6 figures with health and other benefits.
Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands are without employment, without health care, some soon to be without food and shelter.
It’s the mentality of “we’ve got ours, screw the rest”.

I hope and pray that those in the red states that voted for these mucking forons are paying attention.

(normally, my blood pressure stays well controlled, but man, these fcking idiot Republican Senators have angered me to no end.
The AMERICAN PEOPLE mandated change! LET ME REPEAT: CHANGE!!! Take that you Rush fellating arseholes and shove it where the sun don’t shine!)

  19. unbelievable says:

conniptionfit Says: And how stuck are we with ol’ Harry, anyway?

Harry’s got to go. Pelosi got the bill through the House of Reps very quickly, without tolerating the Republicans very much. Why cannot Reid do the same? He has the votes to get it passed.

  20. DRxJ says:

My apologies for my profanity laden post, but when you see the unemployment rate here in Michigan reach staggering heights, and nothing gets done, it makes me break from my normal composure.
I think about the kids not eating, the families not sheltered, the moms and dads stressing each and every day of what to do, and it makes my blood boil.
And these fcking CONservatives DON’T CARE!

    And that pisses me off!

  21. 5th Estate says:

It looks like the Repuyblicans are working hard to make Thrush “I hope Obama fails” Rimjob’s wish come true.

Rush Limbaugh is indeed the de facto “intellectual” leader of the GOP.

I’m glad to see Obama is finally starting to fight back but it isn’t enough–the Democratic representatives and senators need to do the same.

The mass media is still overwhelmingly at the service of the Republicans and the Dems need to make every moment of air-time count…. they need to fight, not simply debate(as though the Republican ‘arguments’ have any merit).

The bipartisan overture has run its (unnecessary) horribly naive and mistaken course. Democrats have the power to pull this country out of the ditch without the ‘help’ of the Republicans.

  22. leftzone says:

What, nothing from their leaders? How does Joe tthe Economist feel? this’ll make Limbaugh’s go back on “pain killers” and poor Graham got the effen’ vapors yesterday, all in all a good day!

  23. celtic cynic says:

I wish there was a way that these asshats would be derived for a month or two of such necessities as paychecks, use of credit cards and utilities and transportation, then be on the receiving end of calls from collection agencies and others.
I don’t think they’d like it very much.

  24. unbelievable says:

DRxJ Says: And that pisses me off!

No need to apologize – we’re right there with you. This is appalling no matter how you look at it, and every American should be just as angry.

  25. conniptionfit says:

Mitch Mcconnell is has a new toy! And the know-nothing rethugs are playin’ with it! It goes like this: If you spent a million dollars every day since Jesus was born, you STILL wouldn’t have a Trillion dollars!
This commenter on TPM has it right and has the penultimate comeback:
“Senator McConnell is flaunting his economic ignorance because if you started the day Jesus was born and created TWENTY million dollars in wealth every day you would have the wealth created in the US economy each year. AND if you flushed TWO million dollars down the toilet every day since Jesus was born you would have the credit losses in the US economy just last year. AND if you flushed THREE million a day, you would have lost less than the money that this recession is projected to cost by the end of next year. We no longer measure boats by cubits and we should not design economic stimulus based on a Jesus’ birthday, so will the Minority Leader please either engage in a serious talk about economic policy or step aside and let the adults handle it?”
Thank you, and sorry for the theft.

  26. Rich H says:

I think we need to start an online petition. I bet we could have several million signatures in one weeks time. Even backwaters want to keep their jobs.
Does anyone know how to start one?

  27. 5th Estate says:

unbelievable: Who will the American people support? Obama. Hands down.

    So one would expect.

Except that public support really only has an effect during elections.
If Obama and the Democrats keep acting like they don’t have public support, they will lose it.
And if they keep acting like they need Republicans more than they need public support, they will lose again.
If, having been given the power to govern, they FAIL to govern, then they will lose–and then we all lose.

  28. A Patriot Acting says:

    conniptionfit Says:

But, but Mitch said not to worry. The Repubs are working on their very own stimulus package which they hope to begin rolling out sometime in the upcoming months. Take your time, Mitch. No hurry. Let me guess, the Regressive’s plan will be laden with ineffective tax cuts, cost about three times what Obama’s plan would cost, and benefit big business and the wealthy. Am I on the right track, Mitch? Mitch?

  29. Uncle Ho says:

DRxJ; I know where you’re coming from. I’m in Michigan too, and when I see a thread like this, it makes me want to explode. I’m no less guilty than you.

Stress: The confusion created in one’s mind when you resist the urge to reach out and choke the living shit out choke the living shit out of some asshole who desparately needs it.

  30. fergus says:

I think that it’s time for another Reaganville to be erected on the National Mall. I would be willing to cough up a hundred bucks to help buy bus tickets for the unemployed people to travel to D.C. and camp out in front of the Senate Office Building. Just imagine 3.6 million angry out of work citizens in one place. The obstructionist members of the Limbaugh Party would soil their silk underwear. The time for endless debate has passed. It’s now time for some old-fashioned grassroots political activisim, ie: street demonstrations, civil disobedience, sit-ins, etc. Where are the campus leaders of the ’60’s, who have the experience and know-how to organize these things? Probably, they’ve all gone corporate. Too bad.

  31. Uncle Ho says:

    let me rephrase that;
Stress: the confusion created in one’s mind when you resist the urge to reach out and choke the living sh!t out of some a$$whole who desparately needs it.

    Fed up in Michigan

  32. larkohio says:

Obama is right, people voted for change. If tax cuts (the Republicans only solution) worked we would all be rolling in clover right now! Republican solutions don’t work!

  33. avchavis says:

These repugnant a$$wipes don’t feel a sense of urgency because they’re not hurting for cash. They don’t know what it’s like to be unemployed, homeless or hungry. These repugnant republicans have no clue and neither do they give a shyte about it. If Graham, Coburn, Wicker, or Ensign had to go through being unemployed or underemployed their attitude would be different. These rat bastards should all burn slowly in hell!

  34. JohninOregon says:

Given the stakes, Congressman Wicker should consider the appropriateness of Jefferson’s warning that “Delay is preferable to error”. He should also note that Jefferson was the president who—when informed of Napoleon’s offer to sell the Louisiana Territory—did not say, “Hmmm. We’ll think it over, take a close look at our budget, form a committee, and get back to you when we’re good and ready.” Instead, he moved quickly to nail down what has been called the greatest land deal in history.

Right on! Now that the Bush Administration gave away trillions to the financial industry without oversight or accountability, there’s no rush to help the very taxpayers who must foot the bill.

Besides, the longer Republicans string this out, the worse it gets, and they will blame Obama. After all, he didn’t give in to their call to make permanent tax cuts for the uber rich the centerpiece of the economic stimulus package.

  48. NutWrench says:

The Republicans deliberately tried to conceal how farked-up the economy was from us during the last election. Remember John “The fundamentals of the economy are strong” McCain? He was saying THAT as late as July of last year.

  49. MapleStreet says:

Admittedly, the Wall Street Bailout was rushed through without control or thought (kind of like the Commander and Chief that engineered it). We need to spend money where it is going to have effect. and perhaps Congress actually sees its mistake on the Wall Street debacle.

At the same time, things ARE urgent and have to be pushed through. Obama has been quite generous in trying to work with everyone only to be met with obstructionist tactics.

  50. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

It’s very simple really. For the republicans to admit that we are on the brink of collapse would be for them to admit they have been the cause of it for the past eight years and they will never admit to this. Selective memory and denial runs rampant in the republican party.

    Gopny

Wasn’t the money that went to the wall street and bailed out their corruption a terrible burden on tax payers? It’s about paybacks to trial lawyers and unions? WTF. If your lucky you’ll never need a lawyer and as for unions, our country wouldn’t be in such a mess if Reagan didn’t see fit to start breaking them. Repealing constitutional rights to Americans – you’ve got that confused with the reppublcans actions of the past eight years.
Aethism and religion? Are you kidding me? Look what the religious fanatics have done to this country. And last but not least, killing babies. Oh my god are you off the deep end. I really don’t think you’ll find anyone at TP that has any idea what your talking about.

  54. Leftside Annie says:

    Yeah, Goopy, that’d work.

Starve children, let old people die, and spend a whole bunch of money rounding up, imprisoning and deporting people who would not only cripple the agribusiness in states like California and Texas — but they’d come right back anyway.

You are ignorant. Truly. You just aren’t smart enough to post here. Get back under your bed, you moron.

its about paybacks to unions and trial lawyers.
its about repealing constitutional rights to legal americans.
its about pushing forth atheism and bashing religion.
    its about killing babies.

Thank God that we have gooperknee to explain this proposal! And all this time, I’ve thought it was about promoting democracy [government BY CONSENT OF THE GOVERNED]; rebuilding America; opening a way for would-be residents of the US to become viable and productive parts of the economy; easing the terrible burden of debt with which THIS generation is already saddled and which could continue for decades; stopping the overpay to industries and banks who have received bailouts; giving unions a chance to fulfill their purpose [the trial lawyers will have enough to do prosecuting the crimes perpetrated by gooperknee and his ilk]; PROTECTING the Constitutional rights of “legal Americans” from Patriot Act trashing of the last 8 years; ensuring freedom of religion; educating people about birth control–that’s CONTRACEPTION, gooperknee, PREVENTING rather than ending pregnancy–what your mother should have practiced. . . silly me. I thought the plan was intended to RESTORE the US to Constitutional guidance after 8 years of violation.

Thanks, gooperknee. Now go away. And take your repug friends with you.

You know, if Jefferson is “spinning like a turbine in his grave”, he’s probably been doing it since 2001, when chimpy decided to start giving away our nations wealth to the already wealthy and privileged through tax cuts they didn’t need. His RPM’s would have increased noticeably when chimpy decided to sacrifice the blood of our sons and daughters in unnecessary wars to enrich defense contractors. releasing smallpox is a bad idea. It is a little random, takes too long, and may end up spreading to unwanted sectors.

Better plan is to simply gun down the homeless. A few fly-by’s over tent cities, dropping some “surgical strike” type armaments.

Better yet, round them all up (man, woman, and child), and use them a live target practice training for the military, so they are better prepared to do battle. Repugs are ONLY concerned with the ’sanctity of life” when it is in the womb — so the “man, woman, and child” bit would not bother them at all. Add to that the repugs LOVE of seeing people killed by munitions and military actions, and you have the repug wet dream.

Illegal aliens pay payroll taxes usually under phony social security numbers so they never get anything back from them. It’s just free money to the rest of us.

And the Bronx like many working class areas had good schools back then because there were factories around that paid taxes. Well guess what, Einstein, all the factories are gone.

goop, thanks for showing all of us here that the Great Society worked. You went to school, like most of us, when Americans understood that a great country was something we needed to pay for. We all got a great education, because we all bought the best schools in the world. But education didn’t go downhill under Jimmy Carter. It went downhill under Reagan. In my state it was Deukmejian who began carving millions out of school budgets year after year after year, followed by Pete Wilson who continued the process for years beyond that. The schools my children go to now are a shadow of what they were when their parents were there. DEMOCRATS BUILD SCHOOLS, and like they do everything else, REPUKES TEAR THEM DOWN AND THEN BLAME SOMETHING ELSE.

Pay attention, people, this is an excellent illustration of a primary troll technique: scattershot stupidity. Our lovely assistant GOP Pony has offered us a melange of falsities here, hoping to draw fire in several different directions, thus dissipating its effect. For instance, if one pushes back on both the absurdity that Bush didn’t enact tax cuts, on;y “tax rebates” during his disastrous presidency and that Jimmy Carter somehow changed the direction of this nation from that established by conservative icon Richard Nixon and caretaker Gerry Ford, then the impact of either retort will be diminished.

On the other hand, if we push back only on the foolishness of Bush’s non-tax cuts and ignore the foolishness of “your failed jimmycarter ahole. thats when the ruination of this country began” then that bit of intellectual flotsam has a chance of slipping through the lines undetected.

It’s a clever strategy, really. Too bad the strategy is the only thing about the comment that’s clever. Clever strategy works best when married to sound execution. It doesn’t look like that’s something we have to worry about from GOP Pony.

I’m guessing that after these miserable long years of rethuglican abuse, there’s not much left of Thomas, maybe just a tibia ricocheting around inside his coffin.

A sad image, though one I agree with completely vis Bush’s Presidency. Truth be told, Jefferson would probably not understand what became of us that we had not revolted long ago. Philosophically, we would in all likelihood had backed secession in 1860. And he sure as hell would have advocated armed insurection with the passage of the Income Tax in 1913.

Remember, folks — this is a GAME!!!! Wheeeeeee!!!!! And it is ALL about whose team wins and whose team loses. The republicans are on the defense this quarter, but you know the old addage: the best defence is a good offence.

See, if the dems get a bill passed, then that is a score for them, so the republicans have to bolster their defensive line and block all possible passage to the goal posts (its harder for them to move the posts around nowadays, as they are not in charge of the field).

    GO TEAM!!!!!!!!!!

The republican party is a party of admitted traitors to America and to the Constitution. They will obsruct on partizn lines. They will accept measures with ONLY 100% of their ideas or none at all. They will obsruct as political manuvers, playing politics with an unprecedented national crisis (FAR worse that 9/11). Didn’t Bush dodge the immigration issue and ultimantely came up with a lame half baked policy??

For one thing certain business needed illegal (guest worker or whatever you want to call them) to keep costs down and profits up.

There is the slaughterhouse industry where the union labor was gutted and illegal immigrants were/are being used so we can enjoy cheap meat in fast food restaurants as one example.

Farm labor in general have kept our produce costs down for years.

Another would be the construction industry (semi skilled and laborers).

The problem isn’t so simple as just getting rid of illegals.

Unless we are willing to pay a higher price for labor, and therefore creating an inflationary situation in a recession?

    gopny Says:

how will giving 4.6 billion dollars to ACORN ’stimulate’ the economy???

Please cite in the bill where that line-item exists. Because it doesn’t, yet you people keep saying it does. So maybe you’re looking at a different bill?

Also, ACORN is awesome and does good work. They deserve public funding, even though they’re not getting it.

    .

    gopny Says:

actually only 37% of americans currently support the shitulus

Funny, the Rasmussen article you cited said their results were “very similar” to the Gallup poll on the subject, which showed 38% wanting to pass the bill as proposed. But that glosses over the following:

A strong majority of Americans (75%) want Congress to pass some version of President Obama’s economic stimulus plan, but this group is split down the middle on whether it should be passed as is or with major changes.

So while we have some disagreements about this or that detail, the bill overall is actually quite popular.

    .

    gopny Says:

    My solution:

    Cut Medicaid Spending by 25%
    Cut Scohool aid by 15%

    Reduce entitlement program spending

First of all, your math is off by a couple orders of magnitude. Which is typical of a wingnut, and an important reason why you people should be kept far away from any major economies.

Look, you guys are the “run government like a business” party, right? You ever heard of any successful businessperson who rose to the top solely by cutting costs? Typically a slash-costs-only approach signals a huge downturn for any company. Businesses do well by investing spending wisely (aka. high ROI) to attract revenue. That’s the idea behind this stimulus bill.

It’s also the idea behind the things you want to cut. Businesses can’t thrive in an environment that lacks a healthy educated workforce.

So far, everything you’re suggesting is designed to depress the economy further.

    .

    gopny Says:

    deport all illegal aliens.

All illegal aliens caught by law enforcement are deported. It’s already the law. That’s hardly an “idea.”

    .

    gopny Says:

payroll tax cuts would put immediate money into the pocket of every WORKING legal american.

Actually, that would save money for their employers, but it wouldn’t direct any more money to employees. Those are not the same thing.

So far, everything that you’ve said is incorrect.

  98. CageyCretin says:

O.k. Mr. president, sir, with all respect: the republicans are NOT your friends — they are… well, let’s just paste it in their own words (and i am so stunned that this statement was made, AND that there has been no legal action following it):

Sessions said… “I simply said one can see that there’s a model out there for insurgency,” …(and)… that Republicans “need to get over the idea that they’re participating in legislation and ought to start thinking of themselves as ‘an insurgency’ instead.”

So, their intention is to NOT participate in legislating, but to act like a radical theocratic terrorist insurgency.

Mr. President, sir, this is not just a bunch of silly words. This is not even “just” (?!?!) thinly veiled racism. This is a clear declaration that they, as a party, are no longer serving the interests of the country, nor are they upholding their oaths of office. They do not want to do the business that they were hired to do — they want to work on gaining power and encating their self-motivated policies ON, not for, the country. This is not the only comment along these lines or of this caliber from these traitors in the last few weeks (we could go back farther, but no need — the rabid anti-American sentiment has been prominent in them recently).

Something must be done. They want the office of the president to fail, they want the majority party to fail, and, most importantly, they want America to fail.
And if the majority party, and the president, do not recognize this AND act upon it appropriately, legally, then they will succeed.

  99. DallasNE says:

Wicker obviously misspoke. He meant to say he wants to delay into the wrong way.

As President Obama clearly pointed out yesterday, we tried it his way for the last 8 years and that is why we are in the messs we are in. As I have been posting for weeks, each 1 week delay results in another 150,000 people joining the unemployed ranks. Delay is a clear enemy. It would be better to clean up a few small “wrongs” after the fact than to have any further delay. Such is the nature of the consequences.

    2) Our children will be happy to worry about the debt when they’re old enough to do so. Right now they’ll be grateful for a roof over their heads and a full belly every day.

    3) “Entitlement’ was invented and perfected by the rich and/or powerful.

This has been true throughout history, and is demonstrated by the quick passage of the bank bailout bill with little or no oversight of the banks who accepted the money, no plan to administer the bailout and the ‘I want my bonus even if I have to take it from the taxpayers!” mentality of the mental midgets who drove this country to financial destruction. So socialism, when it bails out the wealthy and powerful is ok, but when it helps anyone else, is not.

President Obama’s economic recovery package will actually hurt the economy more in the long run than if he were to do nothing, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said Wednesday.

CBO, the official scorekeepers for legislation, said the House and Senate bills will help in the short term but result in so much government debt that within a few years they would crowd out private investment, actually leading to a lower Gross Domestic Product over the next 10 years than if the government had done nothing.

I’m extremely underwhelmed by the quality of the discussion on this board. Except for rare posters like GOPNY who actually interject something factual into the discussion, it’s seemingly a collection of ignorant, foul-mouthed louts.

Of course you GOPers always have to cut education, because you want a stupid populace that will only take marching orders and because critical thinking is anathema for the GOP…

This is not a Education bill. It’s the liberals controlling the school system in this country. That’s why Johnny can’t read but he knows how to put a condom on.

The school system collects approx 1 trillion dollars a year in revenue in this country and yet Johnny still can’t read.

Talk about marching in lock step. Your to stupid to see that it’s the Liberals who control the subject matter in the public school system. They have one of the largest unions in this country and yet you still can’t make a trillion dollars a year work. What do you want, another trillion a year?

You must be a product of that great educational system. Oh did I call you an idiot? I’m sure I meant to.

We’re not going anywhere. Deal with it.

You control the House and Senate. You don’t need us Republicans except to blame this bill on when it fails because of all the PORK in it.

When the people in this country get hit with the tax bill for this boondoggle it will solely be on the shoulders of you Liberal Socialists. I’m going to jump up and say “I told you so”. The devil will demand his payment.

Latest poll shows that this bill has a 20% approval by the American people as passed by Queen Nancy of the Fairy Lands.

What’s wrong? Has Obie lost control of things? Lets see, Soldiers are still being killed, Bin Laden is still sitting in his Lounge Chair drinking Ice Tea, and the jails are still full at Gitmo. Yup, Obie’s magic pen is a wonderful thing isn’t it?

    You Liberals are such Idiots.

Not everyone in this country marches in lockstep with the Liberal Socialists.

Everything that’s wrong with this country is because of the lunatics (such as yourself) in the republican party. I could go over everything line by line and refute your perverted logic. By why bother. It’s enough to say your an ahole. Go somewhere else where delusional thinking is appreciated. It’s not appreciated here. Democrats like to fix things not totally fu*k them up like your party.
By the way, go fu*k yourself.

Folks Rich’s post shows the Liberal mindset when confronted by an opposing opinion. He uses Vulgarity and insults instead of facts. It’s a Liberal tactic that I am very familiar with. All mouth.

I chose this very site because of the amount of Liberals here and their type of responses.

Lets see 1st Amendment. Now does that mean anything to you people who are constantly trying to silence those who don’t believe as you do.

Try this one on. Article IV, section 4.

I’ll check back to see if your intelligent enough to understand the English language.

Then again, the con’s (not beliving in science, physics and other useless knowledge)never have understood that little used principal “for every action there’s a reaction”. They soon will.

Hey Rich. Enlighten me on why all those Liberal Democrat run States are all bankrupt. You guys are so great at economics and spending money.

And there you go again. 1.2 trillion dollars. You couldn’t handle the 800 billion you got last September. You Socialist are really smart. No kidding. I bow down to you. I just had another good Idea. Why don’t you put Chris Dodd and Barney Frank in charge of the Mortgage industry.

    Now you’re cooking.

Rasmussen Poll: Only 37% Now Support Existing Stimulus Plan
    February 4th, 2009
    By JOE GANDELMAN, Editor-In-Chief

    Print
Pollsters vary in their findings, and Rasmussen’s polls don’t always agree with Gallup’s — but this clearly shows a steep drop in support for the present incarnation of President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus plan:
Support for the economic recovery plan working its way through Congress has fallen again this week. For the first time, a plurality of voters nationwide oppose the $800-billion-plus plan.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 37% favor the legislation, 43% are opposed, and 20% are not sure.
Two weeks ago, 45% supported the plan. Last week, 42% supported it.
Opposition has grown from 34% two weeks ago to 39% last week and 43% today.
Sixty-four percent (64%) of Democrats still support the plan. That figure is down from 74% a week ago. Just 13% of Republicans and 27% of those not affiliated with either major party agree.
Seventy-two percent (72%) of Republicans oppose the plan along with 50% of unaffiliated voters and 16% of Democrats.

The two main shifts seem to be the continued mobilization of GOPers back to the party line as articulated by members of Congress and talk show hosts. Some will say it shows how easy it is to push a button and turn on the partisanship light. The other is the erosion in support from independent voters.
Just as George Bush couldn’t be successful morphing from a Texas governor who was popular among people of both parties, Obama will need to retain his bipartisan appeal to succeed. It has also been evident in recent weeks that — so far, at least — Obama has not used the bully pulpit and all of the tools at his disposal to clamor (not ask) for the bill’s passage and/or to get Democrats to seriously fine tune it and peel off some of the Republican opposition.
Look for a VERY unhappy day at the stock market if this comes to a vote and fails to pass or is fillbustered and doesn’t come to a vote.

I guess if you give the people of this country the time to read the bill the more they think it is full of PORK.

OBTW the ACORN funds remained in the new bill. How do I know? Long hours of boring reading.

  146. professorj says:

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Two new national polls suggest that support for an $800 billion stimulus plan to pump up the economy has slipped since mid-January, but may have stabilized in the past week.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Oklahoma, works with his aides on the economic stimulus package. Polls show support for the bill is slipping.

1 of 2 Fifty-one percent of those questioned in a CBS News poll released Thursday evening approved of the stimulus package. That’s down 12 points from a poll taken January 11-15, the last time CBS asked the question. Thirty-nine percent opposed the plan, up 15 points from the previous poll, taken before President Barack Obama was inaugurated and before the House of Representatives passed an $819 billion stimulus package, with no Republican support, on January 28.

A new USA Today/Gallup poll, also released on Thursday, shows virtually identical numbers to the CBS News poll — 52 percent favoring an economic stimulus plan and 38 percent in opposition. Fifty-two percent also favored an economic stimulus plan in a Gallup poll conducted on January 27, a week after the inauguration and the day before the House passed the bill that the Senate is currently considering.

“These two polls, taken together, indicate that support for a hypothetical stimulus package dropped once an actual piece of legislation was introduced and debated in the House,” said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland. “Opinion about the specific bill that is now before the Senate has remained consistent since the details of the House bill were made public. A slight majority favor the current package, with just under four in 10 opposing the bill.”

Obama fires up Democrats to help push stimulus bill
The public often changes its mind about proposals made by a president or by Congress once the details are known, Holland added. “It’s easy to express support for a bill when the goal is clearly stated but the details are not well known. Traditionally, the bigger the bill, the more there is in it that will eventually turn some voters off.”

And the USA Today/Gallup poll seems to indicate a desire for a smaller bill. Forty-eight percent favored Congress cutting the size of the bill by up to $200 billion, with 41 percent opposing such a move.
