The Treasury Department’s $700 billion financial sector bailout program is shortchanging taxpayers by about $78 billion. Treasury has “received bank assets worth about $176 billion in exchange for capital purchases of $254 billion under the Troubled Asset Relief Program.” Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) said, “These are massive handouts to favored institutions to try to make up with taxpayer money the mistakes they made with investor money.”

President Obama will name the members of his Economic Recovery Advisory Board today, which will be led by former Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker. The panel, which is modeled after the Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, will include businesspeople, labor experts and academic economists. Obama adviser Austan Goolsbee will serve as staff director and chief economist for the 15-member board.

A bipartisan group of about 20 senators spent yesterday in a committee room on Capitol Hill to candidly discuss “how to broker a political bailout of the economic recovery legislation.” But “notably absent” from the negotiations was Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) “who has dug in against the stimulus package and on Thursday lost an effort to rewrite it on the floor.”

The country’s largest labor and Hispanic groups are ratcheting up the confirmation fight over Labor Secretary nominee Hilda Solis. “Enough is enough, the gloves are coming off on Friday,” said one official with the AFL-CIO. ThinkProgress has already been engaging in the battle — check out our posts here, here, and here.

“A growing number of states are running out of cash to pay unemployment benefits, a sign of how far social-welfare systems are being stretched by the swelling ranks of the jobless in the deteriorating U.S. economy,” the Wall Street Journal reports. Seven states emptied their unemployment-insurance trust funds in recent months while “another 11 states are in jeopardy of depleting reserves by year’s end.”

“We are writing to affirm our continuing commitment to enacting comprehensive health care reform this year,” Sens. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Max Baucus (D-MT) wrote in a letter to President Obama yesterday. “As you have emphasized, we must act now.”

“Facing a furor in Parliament, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband all but confirmed on Thursday that the U.S. had threatened to break off intelligence sharing if details were revealed about the alleged torture of a British resident held at the Guantanamo Bay military prison.” The U.S. embassy denied threatening the British, but a spokesman said that even with a new president, “I don’t think the position on the confidentiality principle will change.”

The New York Times writes, “With the recession on the brink of becoming the longest in the postwar era, a milestone may be at hand: Women are poised to surpass men on the nation’s payrolls, taking the majority for the first time in American history.” Eighty-two percent of the job losses have hit men, although women still earn less than men in the workforce.

President Obama’s stimulus plan will pump $1 billion to states to help them hire more police through the Community Orienting Police Services (COPS), a program “all but eliminated” by Bush. “In police hiring, nearly 100 percent of the money goes to creating jobs,” Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said, noting that “many police departments are already reporting increases in crime and cuts in their budgets and their forces.”

And finally: The Washington Post reports, “With permission from the Secret Service, the National Park Service has been in hot pursuit of a pack of raccoons spotted roaming the manicured grounds near the White House.” These critters are most likely just “passing through” and “looking for food,” according to the Humane Society’s John Hadidian. President Calvin Coolidge, however, had a pet raccoon named Rebecca, who “often sat on his shoulder or was cuddled by the first lady.”

It’s pretty much the biggest bank robbery in the history of this country.

This seems like a perfect assignment for Paul Krugman. Let’s hope that Obama isn’t too pissed at him to tap him for one of the board seats.

And who would want McCain there? After his bizarre reaction in September to the economic crises we knew for sure he should not be in charge of economic policy. As Bob Cesca points out, McCain and his fellow repubs have ZERO CRED on the economy.

For those who argued against equal pay, this gives pause to think. Could women be kept on the payroll because they’re being paid less to do the same job as men? It is certainly a possibility that this form of reverse discrimination is occuring as business seek to cut labor expenses.

Of course, the employer could aways say there was no discriminatory motive: he merely looked at two employees doing the same job, and kept the one drawing the smaller salary.

Visa, Mastercard or American Express? Or maybe a credit card from JP Morgan Chase?

Wall Street CEOs, lawyers, bankers and media executives chalked up thousands of dollars in prostitution charges on their corporate credit cards — swiping their cards for $2,000 an hour prostitutes, according to a New York madam who plead guilty last year.

Among the names the network says it confirmed…

    * an investment banker at JP Morgan Securities who “loves Brooke” and spent $41,600
    * an investment banker at Goldman Sachs who “only wanted all-American girls” and spent $27,000
    * a managing director from Merrill Lynch who saw “Lana” using the name “Nataly”
    * a managing director from Deutsche Bank “who called about seeing Nataly again”

    I’m totally paraphrasing here but:

Paul (mild incredulity in that Krugman way): Where have you been for the last eight years?

Joe: Bush wasn’t a true conservative!

Paul (raised eyebrows): Then you don’t know what a modern conservative looks like.

Joe (defensive): (Can’t remember what his protest was.)

Paul: Where is this mythical conservative of which you speak?

Olbermann had Russell Tice on to his show a couple of nights to discuss his allegations that the government was spying on Americans, and in particular, journalists, even though Tice had flunk a psych eval and been let go by the NSA before he ever made any of the allegations about domestic spying.

O’Reilly and Fox sent a reporter to talk with Tice over the past couple of days, but Tice refused to talk with O’Reilly or offer any proof of his allegations.

If Tice is a whistleblower that wants to expose inappropriate spying by the government, why wouldn’t he want the opportunity to get that message to the millions of people that watch Fox?

Tice refused to offer any proof of his allegations to O’Reilly. Did Olbermann consider what proof Tice had? Especially in light of the possible conflict from the previous failed psych eval, suspension and termination (that were unrelated)? Did Olbermann even ask?

What is more important to Olbermann, helping to inform the American public, or simply airing those with a message that furthers his agenda, regardless of the credibility or validity.

Olbermann gave Tice a couple of nights, and I believe he didn’t question Tice’s allegations or his credibility on the issue. Only gave Tice a platform.

Maybe, I’m unaware. Did Tice ever offer any proof? Wouldn’t the fact that Tice went to a psych eval, because he believed a co-worker was a Chinese spy, he continued to raise the unfounded issue, after it had been dismissed. Questioned the competency of the FBI on their handling of his unfounded charges. Failed a psych eval. Was moved to the motorpool, base on his concerns of Chinese spies, and eventually threatened the NSA to go to the media (over the unrelated whistleblowing) unless he got reinstated to the NSA with his security clearance back.

All over issues that had nothing to do with wiretapping or domestic spying.

After all this, he comes up with the charge that the government is spying on journalists and regular people. Olbermann doesn’t think to question Tice’s credibility on the issue. Don’t the psych eval and the firing serve as possible motivations for false allegations?

I’m not familiar with Nacchio or Larson’s statements. Regardless of how credible they are, it doesn’t explain Olbermann complete lack of interest in getting to the truth about Tice and his allegations, but only interested in hearing a story that matches his world view.

And both Limbaugh and O’Reilly are notorious for doing the EXACT same thing – only interested in hearing a story that matches their world view. Hell… they’ll both gladly MAKE UP a story that fits their world view if they can’t find one, as evinced by their totally contrived hysteria over the Fairness Doctrine.

I was listening to O’Reilly’s radio show one night back in 2005. It was right after a particularly nasty incident in which several immigrants had been beaten to death in Florida during a botched robbery. O’Reilly started to argue w/ a caller and when the caller pointed O’Reilly had said something to a previous caller, BillO erupted on him.

Billo claimed “we don’t take calls on this show”… think about it for a minute. Doesn’t take calls? Huh? Is BillO delusional? He said this DURING a call he had taken. Just… amazing… why does this man have even an aura of respectability about him?

Would YOU go on his show if you knew he wasn’t the least bit interested in the truth of what you were saying, but rather had an agenda? Do you REALLY think O’Reilly is the least bit interested in the truth on this subject matter? Or just in winning imaginary fights, like his crushing victory over “teh libruls” in the “War on Christmas”?

As far as Tice’s psych evaluation goes… gee, wasn’t that a preferred method for destroying your adversary’s credibility in the old Soviet Union? If you can discredit the messenger, you don’t have to take the message seriously.

You speak to us of “less than credible”? Seriously captain, you are just trying to be a grain of sand but you are just childish in your attempts.

I don’t know about the others, but Tice is way less than credible.

Again, I am forced to ask… why such a need to label Tice? You seem bent on personally trying this man, here, on TP. I have to say, the more you complain about him, when this really isn’t on anyone’s radar right now, the more you will raise flags, Captain. I for one, now wonder, why is backup so obsessed w/ this one person? It’s called ‘blowback”….

You’re probably right ros, good to see you here today..
