Hoekstra leaks information about Iraq trip on Twitter.

hoekstra.jpgRep. Pete Hoeksra (R-MI), the ranking member of the House intelligence committee, broke a press embargo on Twitter when he reported on his “congressional trip to Iraq this weekend that was supposed to be a secret.” “Just landed in Baghdad,” messaged Hoekstra, who was part of a delegation led by John Boehner (R-OH). CQ reports, “Before the delegation left Washington, they were advised to keep the trip to themselves for security reasons. A few media outlets, including Congressional Quarterly, learned about it, but agreed not to disclose anything until the delegation had left Iraq.” Hoekstra not only revealed the existence of the trip, but included details about the itinerary. In a May 2006 op-ed in the Los Angeles Times, Hoekstra wrote:

But every time classified national security information is leaked, our ability to gather information on those who would do us harm is eroded. … I regret that I see little sign of intolerance for unauthorized disclosures of intelligence to the media from some of my Democratic colleagues today. … We are a nation at war. Unauthorized disclosures of classified information only help terrorists and our enemies – and put American lives at risk.

Update The post has been changed to reflect that Hoekstra did not reveal classified information.

  2. Another Joe says:

Yup, they lying liars tell lies and they routinely get away with it. Glad you point to the liars with these types of posts.

But their lies are powerless without the echo chamber of the MSM backing them up and “catapulting the propaganda”.

Real change will mean talking about the folks behind the media and not the fools in front of the cameras and microphones.

  3. VerbalKint says:

Hoekstra’s behavior during the Bush regime bordered on treason.

  4. Cats r Flyfishn says:

We had Jeraldo disclose the location of our troops. We had Rick “man on dog” Santorum disclose the location of our troops. We had traitor Rove and traitor Cheney disclose the identity of a covert CIA Agent and now we have another traitor Republican disclose unauthorized information. Dmn, you just can’t trust these Republicans with classified information.

  26. fletc3her says:

I find it amusing that for all the great progress we’ve made in Iraq it is still necessary to make all official American trips into the country top secret. I think a great symbol of a truly stable Iraq will be the day that the American President can fly in on Air Force One with a published itinerary and an official greeting at the airport.

It is rather unconscionable for Hoekstra to be leaking information like this. I hope there will be an official investigation. Though I am not very concerned about Hoekstra putting himself in danger. It is unfair to the American service people and contractors who must protect him while he provides real time updates of his position to every foreign intelligence service.

  27. kuvasz says:

simply remove him from the intelligence committee because of this. one cannot argue the fact that if this clown is so stupid as to reveal his location in a war zone, he likely is too stupid to protect national secrets.

This guy is on the House Intelligence Committee? Dam! I am just aghast at how so many Repubs seem to forget what they’ve said in the past, as if their view of US citizens is that no one is capable of payting attention or doing research on the Internet except their own staff. These people should be kept far away from any responsibility for our safety and security.

I’ll bet no one in his party will even mention this…

  37. rimhotep says:

This definitely qualifies as treason and Hoekstra should be arrested and put on trial immediately. After all, as Bush so daily articulated “this country is at war” and during wartime this kind of treasonous information means being imprisoned for a very long time.

“Hoeksra (R-MI), the ranking member of the House intelligence committee, revealed classified intelligence information on Twitter when he reported on his “congressional trip to Iraq this weekend that was supposed to be a secret.”

Simple answer here: PULL his security clearance (the FIRST thing done whenever there’s a security breach) and then kick his ass OFF the intelligence committee. He obviously ‘isn’t’ (intelligent) and, has demonstrated himself a risk to others.

    Period. End of story.

A Navy Viet Vet that enjoyed a TS (Top Secret security clearance, and, had it yanked for smoking pot). THIS guy IS a risk, I wasn’t. (EVERYONE in the Zummi Navy was toking, even straight guys (boozers, stateside) when in the PI and Vietnam, I KNOW,I partied with them. (Including a Commanders).

  50. rimhotep says:

This should be the very last time Hoekstra enjoys any kind of covert travel on the people’s dime. Hoekstra is a treasonous SOB and as stated above needs to be divested of his security clearance pronto!

This needs to get to the MSM and the people need to know that there are definitely “traitors among us” posing as civil servants….beginning with Hoekstra.

  51. rimhotep says:

    Fred wrote:

Don’t you even remember when we “won” the war and took over the government one of the things we guarantee the Iraqi people was a continuation of their 100% “FREE” health care, compliments of the US taxpayer. Yes, the Republicans are against free health care for use citizens but gladly gave it to the Iraqi’s. Part of that $750 million dollar per day the American taxpayer spends in Iraq. Yes, that’s $750 million dollar of our tax money every day, 365 days a year, going to the Iraqi people. Just think if it went to us. 2 days of money we send to Iraq would pay for a four-year college education for every Senior in high school in this country. 2 weeks of money we send to Iraq would pay for 100% of the medical bills of every person in the United States this year. Ask Congress to do that and they say we don’t have the money. Ask them to send that money to Iraq and it’s in the national interest. So, next time you have to think twice about going into the hospital remember your tax money pays for 100% health care in Iraq compliments of Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rice.

I think this is just him being clueless. It isn’t to the same level as a military unit being deployed, just a measure of protection so we don’t get our Congressmen kidnapped when they go overseas. I’d hate to see the guy being beheaded on some Al Qaeda tape. As such, it’s like, they could probably mention it to a few friends but not broadcast it in a press release. He probably thought Twitter was more like the former and didn’t realize that anybody anywhere in the world could read his tweets.

Besides, he’s a Congressman, not a soldier. I don’t think there’s a law saying they can’t mention the trip, it’s just a really really really bad idea. But I know I sure as hell wouldn’t travel with him to a warm zone after this.

Basically, he’s a stupid Republican who doesn’t understand the implications of technology or of his own actions, and who endangered the lives of himself, other Congressmen traveling with him, and their security detail. But I don’t think he actually broke any laws…

The moment they touched down in Iraq the terrorists knew he and the others were there. If you think Twitter was a problem then your naive. The terrorists have satellite phones, radios and computers. Once they touched down in Iraq the whole world knew they were there. Even the Russians and North Koreans. No secrets were divulged only the fact that they had arrived.
