After discussing sexism toward women journalists, Kurtz asks Couric about her ‘new hairstyle.’

Yesterday on CNN, media reporter Howie Kurtz and CBS Evening News’s Katie Couric discussed the criticism Couric has received as the first woman to anchor a network news program. “I’ve always had enough confidence in my abilities and my work to know that sometimes there are larger issues at work here about the role of women in society,” Couric said, adding, “I always sort of feel bad for them, that this is how they spend their time.” Yet somewhat ironically, Kurtz then asked Couric if her new hairstyle has something to do with her most recent successes:

KURTZ: We’re going to put up some pictures of you over the years, and I’m going to ask you whether you think at all a factor in your recent success could be this new hairstyle.

COURIC: I don’t know. You know, you should ask Charlie Gibson about how he’s changed his part a little bit, or how Brian looks more tan on the air. I really don’t know, Howie.

The ensuing photo montage Kurtz aired contained one photo of Couric while pregnant. Watch it:

Yes, Kurtz, her hairstyle did it all. Don’t you wish the Grecian Formula worked as well for you?

  3. Rich H says:

Yet another reason I don’t watch CNN. What a joke of a network (second only to FOX).

  4. Hoodathunk says:

Fact is, Katie is a doll and most guys wouldn’t kick her out of their bed for eating crackers. The real surprising thing is they would actually listen to what she says first. The lady has a mind and a heart. I wouldn’t mind listening to her journalism.

  5. Nevar says:

Good grief… who phucking cares… media personalities stroking each other…what’s next, running for president?

  6. spencers mom says:

Good for you, Katie! Perfect retort!

And thank you for doing your best to show the nation, no, the world, what Palin really was… or wasn’t, as was the case.

I still don’t watch you, but I appreciate you anyway!

    PEACE

  7. SKdeA says:

What a dick you are, Howie. Jealous?

  8. Buckie Boy says:

Well hell, we all know that the Corporate Controlled Media is not about NEWS….

…unless you are a brain dead moron who can’t think your way out of a paperbag…

….then it is just the thing for you.

…and now for some shots of women in bathing suits….or a puppie…or endless coverage of some swimmer who hit on a bong…

…but news of Bush/Cheney torture war crimes….don’t have time for that.

  9. Juan C. says:

Not trying to stir the sh*t and somewhat off topic, but women can’t make the important decisions in Christian, Jewish and Islamic religions and women in those religions don’t seem to care.

  10. zathrus says:

Is it really completely off limits to discuss physically appearance at this point? So, it’s completely uncool to suggest that tall men make more money than short men? Newcasters are “talking heads”, and the appearance of that head does matter to viewers. Note that they are called VIEWERS, and not LISTENERS.

  11. coskibum says:

Gee Howie hows your rug holding up? Still dying the sides to match?? What a moron!

  12. Nevar says:

Thus is the mold of the patriarchal system of that religion, Juan C.

(I now consider, in light of the past few decades, those three mentioned religions to be one and the same. They have the same origin, and have become little more than bickering factions fighting over the same rock in the middle of Jerusalem.)

COURIC: I don’t know. You know, you should ask Charlie Gibson about how he’s changed his part a little bit, or how Brian looks more tan on the air. I really don’t know, Howie.

    – - Couric, (reading between the lines): “STFU, you misogynist pig, Howie.”

  14. Rich H says:

Juan, what’s the point your trying to make?

Zathrus, wouldn’t it be funny if a woman got promoted over you because she had a new hairstyle?

  15. Wayne A. Schneider says:

What happened, Howie, did you run out of intelligent questions to ask her?

  16. Perry logan says:

I’m a bitter man because nobody ever asks me about my hairstyle.

  17. Nevar says:

    I just wear a hat.

  18. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Don’t be bitter, Perry. What’s your hair-styling secret? Looking at the pics of you on your blog, I’m guessing you threw your combs away. :)

  21. Rich H says:

    Zero

Pretty sneaky putting Palin and Coulter in there with qualified educated women.

  22. dbadass says:

    Hi Zero.
If time permits might you do me a solid and post a list of man jobs? A list of woman jobs might also be interesting.
    Thanks in advance…

  23. Leftside Annie says:

Gee, I’m surprised he didn’t call her “sweetie.”

    Crikey. What an asshat.

  24. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    Zero Says:

Katie, never send a women to do a mans job, you’ll never be take seriously. Just ask Palin, Coulter, Hillary and Schlossberg.

Of course Maddow may be the exception that proves the rule.

    February 9th, 2009 at 5:39 pm

    Zero,

Did you know that in that context, the word “proves” actually means “tests”, not “establishes genuineness”. In fact, that Rachel Maddow has been successful shows that the assertion that you should “never send a woman to do a man’s job” is bunk.

Regis Philbin and Oprah Winfrey. Which one is doing the “man’s job” and which one isn’t? (They pretty much do the same thing.)

    Juan C. Says:

Not trying to stir the sh*t and somewhat off topic, but women can’t make the important decisions in Christian, Jewish and Islamic religions and women in those religions don’t seem to care.

Hi Juan. Obviously you haven’t met too many Jewish women/mothers. In fact Jewish women can even be Rabbis so I think they can make important decisions. I’ve even seen them decide what their husband should cook for dinner.

  26. Constant Weader says:

Couric had a perfect comeback, unfortunately probably because she’s had to invoke it so often. Thanks for posting this.

  27. Game of Life says:

So President Obama’s bill passed. Is this his bill or the cut bill?

So if repugs want to play this little partisan game then go right ahead. All that is needed is one lousy stinkin repug vote. Coming soon more dems and less obstructionist repugs.

    No more concessions for repugs

  28. Game of Life says:

    That was fun nee!

I bet he didn’t see the irony of it.

    Who is Brian?

  29. Hoodathunk says:

Never send a woman to do a man’s job? Katie does a pretty fair job all by herself. Why is it the converse has never become an axiom?

  30. Nevar says:

    “Who is Brian?”

    Just follow the sandal…

  31. Hoodathunk says:

Besides, I haven’t seen any ‘men’ stepping up to the journalistic plate.

  32. Game of Life says:

    Hoodathunk Says:

Fact is, Katie is a doll and most guys wouldn’t kick her out of their bed for eating crackers.

Gawd, what a awful thing to say. Women don’t want to be in any man’s bed that would “do her.”

Another thing what makes you think that’s a compliment? The other gem I hear is “I’ll do her.” What kind of man would “do a woman”? It’s so infantile. And it says a lot of a mindset of the rapist out there all women are whores.

  33. Hoodathunk says:

GOL, at no time in that post did I refer to your pathetic ‘do’ mantra. I am not responsible for your hearing nor would I want to be. If you want to project, pick another target. Check my other posts, the lady is a professional.

  34. bula says:

Wasn’t Jessica Savitch the first Network News Anchor?

    Weekend Anchors count too…

  35. ecthompson says:

Kurtz is proving that is dumber than dirt.

  36. Hoodathunk says:

Now I see where the ‘do’ mantra comes from, GOL. Its yours. For your information, I would have no problem with telling Ms. Couric that I thought no man would lick her out of bed for eating crackers’. Right to her face. And I bet I could do so in a fashion she would accept it as the off hand compliment it is intended to be.

I would also bet you couldn’t.

  37. Hoodathunk says:

and have your fun with the typo.

  38. Rich H says:

    zero

    contributed much?

  39. RandomChaos says:

    OT,
Is TP filtering the threads after the fact?

I notice alot of responses to Zero’s post, but no post by Zero exist.
They are obviously not banning the Moniker, because it still keeps posting.

    What gives?

  40. Hoodathunk says:

a bit of social responsibility about flaming?

  41. sectionop92 says:

    I see Kurtz was intimidated.

Did Howie have to buy a fire engine after the interview to regain his masculinity?

You don’t comprehend too well. Talk about what you said, not what others had said that’s right on the line of your thinking.

You know that wasn’t right to say that about katie. And it’s just as sexist as kurtz comment.

  43. DutchHenry says:

Sheeesh! another insipid media figure.Somehow the big shots in the media keep putting forward thes detestable media figures,Kurtz,David Gregory & Joe Scarborough.I just refuse to reward these creeps ,I just find it better not to watch the BS they put on over the air.

  44. Max-1 says:

    Diamonds or pearls…
… Is this the best interview question out there?
