Anti-Obscenity Crusader Eric Cantor Sends Out Profanity-Laced Attack On Union

Today, public-workers union AFSCME launched a massive advertising campaign targeting neo-Hooverite conservatives who are trying to block President Obama’s recovery and reinvestment plan. One target is Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), whom the union faults for declaring he was proud that his party was “just saying no” to Obama. A Cantor spokesman responded by sending around a profanity-laced video portraying AFSCME as mob goons. The video uses the F-word six times in one minute and ends with the tagline: “AFSCME: We’re the f*cking union that works for you.” Watch it:

Cantor claimed the video was a “joke,” though AFSCME didn’t think it was very funny.

Yet it’s not just unions who could be offended by the video; Cantor himself has railed against obscenity, voting for the Broadcast Deceny Enforcement Act that allowed fines of up to $500,000 on broadcasters for airing any “obscene, indecent, or profane” material. Speaking on the House floor in support of the bill, Cantor condemned “offensive television” that will “damage our society” and “cannot be tolerated“:

CANTOR: The use of obscenity…should not and cannot be tolerated. As a parent, I share the concerns of many regarding the level of offensive television and radio programs that are transmitted into our homes. The recent violations that have occurred disgusted not only me, but damage our society.

He added that “we will not be satisfied until those responsible” for disseminating obscenity “have been reprimanded.” The heads of Americans United for Change, the AFL-CIO, and AFSCME have already reprimanded Cantor. You can tell Cantor what you think about his obscenity-laced video by leaving a message for him on his Facebook wall or on Twitter.

Update Cantor’s spokesperson, Brad Dayspring, released a statement taking responsibility for the video and apologizing on behalf of Cantor:
I would like to apologize for a joke that was in no way an official response from Congressman Cantor, but instead an inappropriate email. I apologize to AFSCME for my inappropriate email containing an old video. Let me be clear, we know people are hurting in these trying times and House Republicans completely agree that we must pass an economic recovery bill that preserves, protects and create jobs for Americans facing these economic challenges.

I’m not going to waste my time watching the video.

But what about the obscenity that is rush limbaugh, and the profane obscenities he spouts on a daily basis?

Why can’t something be done about ridding the public air waves of his hatred???

  2. larkohio says:

    Cantor talks garbage.

  3. woodguy says:

As a union member for many years, I laugh out loud every time I hear one of these wingnuts talk about unions. Virtually everything they say is a lie. Anyone with half a brain (we know you’re out there) can figure out how ridiculous their anti-union diatribe really is.

  4. Dumb Fox the Average Golfer says:

Seems Cantor’s name is due a vowel change.

Btw, anyone else notice that in order to justify some anti-union stuff, the GOP reaches for a fake teamster goon video. Just like in order to justify torture, they reach for a fictional character, Jack Bauer. When they want to get news, they switch over to Fox.

    Bunch of assclowns.

  5. EnnuiDivine says:

If there were actually Italian-Americans living in Cantor’s district…they would be pissed.

  6. katy says:

profanity aside, that video seemed really PRO-union to me…

i didn’t get it, if it’s supposed to be anti-anything…
    except azzholes…

  7. Zooey says:

MsJoanne posted this on TheZoo this morning — GTMA!!

I think Rep Cantor is going to be spending more time with the family soon. His wife is going to have to break out the big bar of soap.

  8. conniptionfit says:

Roflmao! I’m sorry, I F’in Love this video! This is the funniest thing I’ve seen since John McCain! And hey, I’m totally down with Unions, they’re our best hope of saving the middle class. But this is a very SNL send-up, and ya gotta laugh! And laugh even more at the right wing-nut idiots who take this seriously.

  9. RUCerious says:

So did Cantor use Cheney as a technical editor on the clip?

  10. ralph the wonder llama says:

Makes me wonder why the Republican leadership in Congress never tried to pass a broad-ranging bill making IOKIYAR the law of the land.

You know Bush would have signed it.

  11. NOLIESPLEASE says:

They are protrayiing union people as idiots.

Take a drink of water my friend…water pure from you friendly union who looks after you and you family.

  12. Jackie says:

Well well now Eric Cantor is that good old Jewish boy after all. Yes nice suit big home and alot of money but behind the door there is a diry faul mouth and who knows what else. Does Eric Cantor deal in any sexual acts he’s not talking about he can well pay for the Emperor VIP Club price. You just never know with these guys who protest to much. Sounds like Mark Foley working to protect the kids and the Paster saying having sex with men is a sin while both got busy themselves. Who is Eric Cantor really?

  13. SKdeA says:

    So Cantor’s a hypocrite, am I surprised?
Can’t we find some really good dirt on this guy before he becomes the R candidate?

  14. Rich H says:

Another republican talking out of his a**. Target him and get him out of office. The sooner the better.

  15. tombaker says:

    Cantor = Santorum

Just keep following in good’ol Rick’s footsteps, lil feller, and you’ll find your rightful place in the scheme of things.

  16. MysteriousTraveller says:

  17. Uncle Ho says:

Cantor, another fine upstanding Rethuglic party upholder of public morality and “family values”.

    snark

  18. Fontsdeleon says:

I think he’s the guy that said the Republican’s opposition to the Stimulus Plan is giving the Republicans a “voice”. That their “belligerence” is really Republican principles and core values at work, fighting against the scourge of socialism. “It’s our chance to show the American people that were fiscally-responsible after all.” He probably said.

  19. Tweedster says:

Cantor is a brain-dead pretty boy. I wonder how much his coiffe costs?

  20. Zooey says:

CANTOR: The use of obscenity…should not and cannot be tolerated. As a parent, I share the concerns of many regarding the level of offensive television and radio programs that are transmitted into our homes. The recent violations that have occurred disgusted not only me, but damage our society.

Well, I guess Cantor just NUKED our society with that potty-mouthed video.
    :-D

  21. liberalinaredstate says:

Cantor is a self absorbed narcissistic twit who probably has a shrine of Tom Delay in his closet. He looks like he enjoys lying everytime he speaks, as if it’s his duty, his personal honor to spew bulls**t. He would problably throw his own Mother under a bus if she got in the way. I really cannot stand that man! He started popping up last year and now he’s everywhere.

  22. lapdogs says:

Hey Cantor! I hear Scarbourgh has an extra “7 second beeper” you can use!!

  23. zuch says:

What?!?!? Another Great American Hypocrite? That’s not news … or even surprising; he’s a Republican.

    Cheers,

  24. Alejandro says:

You want to know what’s really obscene?

Obama is continuing Bush’s most disgusting abuses of power, the “state’s secret privilege.”

  25. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

Color me confused but at the link, some of the comments said this vid had been up on you tube for quite some time. If that’s the case, why would Cantor’s team be sending it to AFSCME now? It seems like it’s a pro-union vid.

    MysteriousTraveller Says:

I don’t know, man… you’ve got Michelle Bachman, Steve King and now Steve Austria to consider…

    lots o’ competition.

  27. CageyCretin says:

Oh, come on. When a republican says a “joke” it is all okey-dokey.

Ever hear about the n!@@*r and the Pollock prostitute… what? It’s JUST a joke.

Ok, how ’bout some good ol’ incest jokes. Repugs just LOOOOVE some incest jokes. (I actually can’t forget, as hard as I try, a couple disgusting incest jokes, told by a friend of a friend, loudly, while camping at an event with lots of children about. And HE thought his little jokes were just SOOOOO funny. Until we had to tell him to STFU).

  28. Hoodathunk says:

First, could someone please explain the IOKIYAR acronym?

And second, Cantor is enough of an obscenity all by his little lonesome.

  32. Deschanel says:

Oh God- this video is meant as comedy, and has been around for YEARS.

Odd as it sounds, it really is pro-union, but the main point is that it’s comedy, not a real PSA or political endorsement.

My buddies, blue collar guys, find it hilarious, and have sent it around for years now.

  33. CageyCretin says:

    Hoodathunk Says:
First, could someone please explain the IOKIYAR acronym?

ooooh! Ooooooh! I second that. (I thought “I” was the only one here not up to speed on all these texty/bloggy acronyms).

(hope this doesn’t embarrass me too much…)

  40. Rich H says:

    Deschanel,

Is that so? What kind of comedy is it exactly? What union members do you know that find it funny? Do you know people who would like to be in a union who find this funny as well?

    Why, the fish, of course.

And, no I DON”T know an ACTUAL joke of that nature.

  42. Luis M says:

Cantor: “Do as I say, not as I say… er, no, wait. Do as I said, not as I did say… Don’t say what I said, just do what I say… ah, F*** THIS!”

katy Says: ha! hoodathunk – i’m trying to find out what GTMA means!

  44. Hoodathunk says:

I do. Well, not about the fish actually.

Republicans don’t get satire or figurative language or anything like that. I got axed from a neocon forum for using metaphors.

  47. CageyCretin says:

    Hoodathunk Says:

I do. Well, not about the fish actually.

Well, I am ONLY interested in fish jokes (and jokes about squirrels — squirrels and tiny kangaroos), so you may retain it for your own future uses. Thanx.

    Cuz I’m a frickin’ idiot.

    Heh.

  51. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Obscenity is in the eye of the condemner.

Personally, I thought the Cantor ad was funny and, being from New York, I didn’t notice any profanity.

That being said, it is pretty hypocritical of Cantor to send out such a message while also being on an anti-profanity crusade. Well, I have three words for people who think we should censor language because it might offend people:

    Go fu(k yourselves.

  52. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    Eric Cantor is an obscenity.

I REALLY DO still have that thing. And the cassette player to load programs.

Well, good idea: I will go harvest some squirrels. Play nice everyone… well, as nice as anyone deserves….. ;)

  55. Fred says:

    Deschanel
No union person finds being the butt of a joke like this to be funny…… Blue collar guys don’t translate to union men…

Portraying hard working honest Americans in this way is how the gop stooges demean and dishonor unions.

There has in the past, been some ganster involvement in unions. It was a necessary evil to combat the pinkertons and police who used violence against union members who were doing nothing more than striking and boycotting corportations who wanted nothing to do with unions against the wishes of their employees……

  56. Hoodathunk says:

It is a crying shame that political correctness and right wing propriety have taken away the ability to appreciate ethnic humor. Being able to laugh, especially at ones self, is an important part of being human.

Cantor totally doesn’t get the joke.

  57. Shayne says:

I’m guessing Kantor won’t be running for higher office any time soon.

  58. stateofthedivision says:

Eric Can’tor represents the hyper-competitive red team. America’s leadership is abysmal. Eight years of George W.’s pathology ended in massive corporafornication.

Eric Can’tor is the poster child for horrific leadership. My guess is as a kid, no one wanted to play with Eric.

  59. nanlichi says:

OK Hoodathunk, you asked for it.

Three guys, an Italian, a French and Cantor were on Oprah discussing what tricks they had during sex to get their wives hot.

The Italian said (in his best Italian accent)..”I pour wine all over her body and lick it off. That really gets her hot!”

THe Frenchman said (in a beautiful French accent)…”I put rose petals all over her body and blow them off with puffs of air. Puff, puff, puff. That really gets her hot!”

Cantor said (in his grating Repugnant whine)…”When I am done I wipe myself off on the curtains. That really gets her hot!”

  60. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Spokesman Dayspring: Let me be clear, we know people are hurting in these trying times and House Republicans completely agree that we must pass an economic recovery bill that preserves, protects and create jobs for Americans facing these economic challenges.

    and thanks zooey!

  68. Deschanel says:

Is that so? What kind of comedy is it exactly? What union members do you know that find it funny? Do you know people who would like to be in a union who find this funny as well?
Some joke. Nice apology for horrible sentiment and behavior.

What behavior? What apology? I was not addressing Cantor’s sending it out, just purely the video itself. Believe it or not, blue collar guys can have a very good sense of humor about themselves. And the crux of the video is sincere- telling yuppie white collars all the things they do, but in a profane and funny way.
If you are too snobbish and politically correct to get the joke of the video, come down from your ivory tower once in a while.

Cannot believe people taking this ancient comedy bit so seriously. If Cantor thought it was anti-union when he sent it out, the joke’s on him. Blue-collar Democrat here, btw.

  69. curmudgeon says:

Did he apologize for future, similar offenses at the same time?

  70. Dr.TobiasFunke says:

  72. dsmith says:

What kind of job are Jewish mothers doing? I realize they are the chosen people, but damn, Cantor talks like a deranged idiot, Bernie Madoff steals billions, the entire Israeli government cracks jokes about starving Palestinians (We put them on a diet).

Look for 60 Minutes, to do a puff piece on Cantor in the next few weeks, in order to rehabilitate his image.

  73. curious says:

Cantor represents the total disconnect the Republicans continue to have from the rest of us. As his vulgarity was not a joke. It is typical of Republicans from Cheney on down. Nothing is too vulgar, no lie too big and no obstruction from ignorance and hatred of this country is too big to at least contemplate.

    The thing speaks for itself.

  74. dasm says:

I’ll feel he apologized when he pays the 3 million dollar fine ( 6 times $500,000) that he voted for. Until then, he’s a foul-mouthed, lying hypocrite Republican.

  75. delafield says:

Hatred is the only thread that holds the Republican Party together. The GOP needs hate mongers and racists like Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage, and FOX News in order to survive.

  76. dbearton says:

Just what you would expect, from a low life RepubliCon.

  77. labman57 says:

Basically, Cantor is saying “f*** ‘em if they can’t take a joke”.

Just another typical example of the old GOP adage: Do as I say, not as I do.

  78. wiley says:

Not swearing is about the cheapest form of “morality” around.

  79. fergus says:

I think everybody is being too hard on Mr. Cantor. According to the update it was one of his aides who sent the e-mail, and, the aide apologized, profusely, for causing any embarrassment to Mr. Cantor. In realspeak the punk polished Cantors ass and tried to take the bullet. The boy will go far in Limbaugh Party politics. He has all of the necessary talents.

  80. wizard2000 says:

Get out the bar of soap. Cantor has potty mouth.

  81. eyesopen says:

“neo-Hooverite”? I like that. That is a term that says it all with five syllables. My congratulations to the person who coined this term. It has made a great contribution to the language in terms of economy of expression.

  82. Middleoftheroad says:

Yeah, the nerve of anyone cutting down the unions…. after all they’ve done for Michigan economics and the Detroit car companies. :^)

  83. DICKERSON3870 says:

    My dear Honorable Congressman Cantor:

Nine deaths from salmonella-tainted peanut products? What a nice departing ‘fare-thee-ill’ from Herr Bush and his merry band of Republican “evildoers”. But then, I suppose it’s really just the latest manifestation of ‘Reaganomics’ .

    Keep up the good work!

    Your devoted supplicant

  84. Middleoftheroad says:

DICKERSON3870: I believe it’s Carter who has the peanut market cornered. What? ….. Bush filled the jars as a part-time job?

Reaganomics? You mean the economic tool that have America over 86 months of un-paralleled economic growth? It worked when Queen Elizabeth the 1st did it, and when Kennedy did it, and Reagan and Bush Jr., too.

  85. majii says:

No spin or justification needed, Mr. Cantor. It’s too late now. The rat has escaped its’ hole, and it’s name is Eric Cantor. You just showed the entire world your true nature.
    Hypocrite, thy name is Cantor.
