Huckabee: ‘One thing is clear,’ the economic recovery package is ‘anti-religious.’

huck.gifIn an e-mail to supporters yesterday, former Gov. Mike Huckabee (R-AR) wrote, “The dust is settling on the ‘bipartisan’ stimulus bill and one thing is clear: It is anti-religious.” To support his claim, Huckabee “pointed to a provision in both the House and Senate versions banning higher education funds in the bill from being used on a ‘school or department of divinity.’” But as Steve Benen explains, “Huckabee is bearing false witness“:

[T]his myth has been making the rounds in right-wing circles for about a week. Originally, the American Center for Law and Justice, a right-wing legal group formed by TV preacher Pat Robertson, said the stimulus bill includes a provision that would prohibit “religious groups and organizations from using” buildings on college campuses. [...]

[T]he standard language in the bill simply blocks spending for on-campus buildings that are used primarily for religion (like a chapel, for example). This same language has been part of education spending bills for 46 years. It’s just the law, and it’s never been controversial.

    That’s the good news, Chuckleberry…

  2. Hoodathunk says:

The only separation these clowns understand is about people and their money.

The government isn’t supposed to support religion. Its why they get tax exempt status. If you can’t get enough money from your ‘flock’ in donations, you might want to take a look at your message.

  3. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

The rule is “areligious”, not antireligious. Big difference, preacher.

Why rely on the government to help y’all, Huck… don’t you have a gawd for that?

  10. Chuck Feney says:

I should hope that any bill coming out of our secular government should direct taxpayer funds to secular projects.

I say, eliminate the deficit by taxing the churches that stick their noses into politicking!

  11. nofltwlt says:

Yeah, well? Is this a bad thing?

The devoutly religious are the most dangerous people on earth and contribute more to the divisiness of people across the world than any other factor.

Why on earth would we wish to promote religion with tax dollars – it’s like putting a gun to our own head.

  12. larkohio says:

Why would the stimulus bill have anything to do with religion at all? We need to get America working again. Religion has nothing to do with it. This is a stupid argument.

  13. kasinca says:

Huckabee and the other wingers need to concentrate on the Book, the Bible. They are not in government and need to stay the hell out of it and they should allow the government to stay out of their churches, otherwise, they should start paying income tax, property tax, etc.

  14. WaltinTexas says:

“Bearing false witness” means nothing to ‘holier than thou’ types like Huckabee, Palin, Bush, etc.

It is all about keeping the base fired up. Huckabee has to manufacture false issues since talking about the record of the Bush administration is a sure loser. His greul is getting pretty thin by now, however.

  23. mk3872 says:

Huck is working the base to raise his profile and $$ for his next prez campaign.

Fact is, this claim is bogus, overblown and FoxNews blown up.

All this tries to do is to not have the gov’t fund building places of worship or those meant primarily for worhsip.

This is not new. This have been in Fed Govt bills for a long, long, long time.

I enjoy and agree with most of your posts, but don’t accidentally take a page from Huckster’s book by flexing a fact out of context. . . as he’s trying to flex the prohibition of the State establishing any religion.

telestai #46…( on Pork) The prohibition was given to the Jews; was lifted for Christians under the “new covenant” which did away with blood sacrifice and the old Levitical laws.

Fair enough ( and I appreciate your frequent comments too).
But, if God is the Alpha and Omega and His word is law, and HE is perfect, why the change, why the ‘nuance’?

It’s a rhetorical question of course. I am as guilty in this instance, as you charge me, as Huckabee is.

Except that I was making a joke with a play on words) whereas Huckabee makes policy and whilst I’m subject to challenges here, Huckabee is well protected from the same.

No need to take this further, it’s good to have you around telestai, and I shall remember your correct admonishment–the quality of a joke is arguably defined by it’s truth or absurdity and mine was somewhere in between. Joking about religion is a serious business.

    Cheers!

  69. 5th Estate says:

nanlichi #50 Anybody know where to find a good carpenter? These clowns don’t have a clue.

I happen to be a good carpenter ( actually cabinet/furniture maker and architectural woodworker)–or rather I was. Interestingly although most of my clients were millionaires ( and multimillionaires) they always stopped spending during economic downturns, so in fact when times are tough the rich DON’T create jobs for the working classes–they either hoard or invest elsewhere.

  70. Hoodathunk says:

5th Estate Says: But, if God is the Alpha and Omega and His word is law, and HE is perfect, why the change, why the ‘nuance’?

Maybe he can change his mind when he sees people don’t get the message? Don’t forget, he has a sense of humor too. Just look at the platypus.

  71. nanlichi says:

5th Estate, I too was joking about religion with a reference to the Huckabee type Christians not being able to find a good carpenter.

I work with carpenters, most are wood butchers, but the cabinet maker is an artisan. Slow as molasses but quality.

The rich will spend their money eventually. They will swoop in like vultures to pick the bones clean of those of us who can’t keep our homes. There are winners in this economy, no doubt. Those that have the cash to take advantage of other’s losses.

  72. incredulousnyc says:

Whew. I love to read the comments here on TP because you all make me feel just a bit more sane. Sometimes I get so disillusioned with the American public that it makes we want to leave the country. Thank goodness….not gawd…that there are others who think this way.

  79. Shayne says:

Yeah that was my other thought, they hadn’t received their talking points yet. I didn’t know they got “plugged in” to get them. It makes sense now though. :)

  80. 5th Estate says:

nanlichi… the carpenter reference blew right by me the first time, LOL!

NB: Funnily enough a lot of Christians of Huckabee’s ilk I’ve noticed often describe Jesus as a carpenter whereas the Bible only describes his cuckolded father Joseph as such.

One thing is clear, Huckabee, like Palin, is a Christian right-wingnut. Huckabee is a typical Baptist hypocrite (fear-monger, hate-monger, war-monger), more Anti-Christ then Christian.

  88. AlexLawyer says:

Huckabee is right, and it’s a damn good thing! Conservative Christians have enthusiastically, unreservedly and aggressively supported the Bush-Cheney agenda, including massive tax cuts for the wealthy, astronomical deficits, reductions in services for the needy, warmongering, war profiteering, war crimes such as torture, forced disappearance and slaughter of civilians, infringements on civil liberties, carte blanche for Wall Street predators, corrupt defense contracting, and other outrages.

Since these things are part and parcel of the religious right’s agenda, we should be pleased that the stimulus package doesn’t pass muster with them.

  89. wizard2000 says:

We already endured a Dick who was head of the vice presidency for eight, torturous years…so what is Huckabee’s excuse?
