Bachmann’s stimulus plan: $1 billion to each of the 435 congressional districts.

bachmann.jpgLast month, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) voted against the House version of the economic recovery package, claiming that it had “far too little actual stimulus” and “far too much plain old political pork.” In an interview last week with the St Croix Valley Press, Bachmann said that she wished “the bill would contain more money for transportation and roads and infrastructure building.” She then offered an odd proposal for how to do that:

“There are 435 house districts across the United States,” she said. “Let’s say congress limited itself to $435 billion on the stimulus package and $1 billion to the 6th district and put that on infrastructure spending and build the Stillwater bridge, for instance, or widen I-35, or build overpasses by Forest Lake by I-35 where we need them.”

Is that like the most confusing audible ever or something?

  2. deebaser says:

so instead of targetd federal stimulus, Bachman wants it to be 100% pure pork spread out evenly?

  3. ralph the wonder llama says:

I’m convinced that Michelle Bachmann doesn’t have a thought in her head. Every time she speaks, it sounds like she’s just pure impulse, verbalized.

And it’s not good impulse, either.

  4. raynman says:

I really need to move my children out of her district… whatever she has might be contagious….

  5. Uncle Ho says:

It’s pork only if it’s not in MY district.

    snark

  6. sacomment says:

it actually works well for the congressional districts that have no land, air, or water connections with other districts, and don’t have any ingoing or outgoing trade or communication. otherwise it would be complicated.

  7. krazeeinjun says:

I’m convinced that if one were to peer deeply in to Michele Bachmann’s eyes you’d see the inside of the back of her head.

    Just saying . . .

I got a stimulus package for the beeotch right here…

  9. spencers mom says:

Absolutely no filter. She’s like her own brand of Congressional Tourettes Syndrome!

Just how would that work? If one district has major freeways and bridges running through it, while the next district over was primarily rural, would the first district need to charge residents of the second district a usage fee to cover the infrastructure? Oh, never mind…

This woman is simply batshit crazy.

    PEACE

Shelley “Bimbo” Bachmann is certifiably nuts. She was on a local radio talk show in the Twin Cities this morning lying about socialized medicine being in the stimulus package, republicans being shut out of conference negotiations, yada, yada, yada.

She was playing “victim” in the most melodramatic way and laying groundwork for the “Sgt. Schultz Defense” (”I know n-n-n-n-othing; I see n-n-n-n-othing”).

Her elevator definitely doesn’t go all the way to the top. She is a unique combination of Little Annie Coulter, Katherine Harris and Sarah Failin’ Palin. That’s about as close as I can come to paying her a compliment.

  11. DvlsAdvocat says:

i would support her version over one penny in additional tax cuts. As much as “pork” is decried, infrastructure targeted construction projects would do more for the economy, faster, and provide actual long-term benefit to the country than any tax cut EVER would.

If I were in charge, the full stimulus would be purely construction projects.

Well, Shell, if you’re so against “Pork”, we’ll just go ahead and not give your district ANY.

  15. fletc3her says:

$435 billion is an absurd figure of course. What would my local congress person do with a $1 billion budget at his own discretion? My county’s discretionary budget was only about $100 million in 2007!

However, I actually kind of like this idea as a way of taming pork. I think it would be a reasonable idea if we gave out a reasonable amount to each congress person to spend using their own discretion and then didn’t allow any pork line items in the budget or other bills.

O/T: Why is the Obama Justice Dept. siding with agribusiness and an insecticide manufacturer in California to keep the “inert” (toxic, actually) ingredients of Checkmate spray secret?
Why is the Obama Justice Dept. not siding with the residents of Monterey County and Santa Cruz county who were sprayed with Checkmate last year in a vain attempt to sexaully harass the light brown apple moth (LBAM)? For details, search Google News for LBAM.

  22. Steaming Pile says:

#15 – Districts are supposed to be of approximately equal size. You run into problems when you have at-large states like Wyoming or Vermont who are guaranteed one House seat no matter how few people live there, or other small states that have enough population for one and a half congressmen. I’m sure this would only require an act of Congress, but there ought to be a limit to the number of at-large states of about three, and the average population of those should be used to apportion the rest. Sure, you’d have something like 900 members in the House, but so what?

You are all assuming here, I take it, that Ms Bachmann has the capacity or understanding to know better than what she actually said.

Let us all remember some of her recent rants and frequent media appearences to leave little doubt about 1 thing:

She is the classic GOP tool with an empty noggin that they fill in with hours of Limbaugh & Hannity tapes so that she can recite the talking points.

  32. tokin librul says:

It’s that old metaphor thing, the difference between “pig” and “pork”. Tax-breaks for the wealthy are “pig”, job stimuli are “pork.” The thing about “pork” is that it can be edible.

The stimulus ought to go to the unemployed, those on fixed incomes, the working poor. They’re the ones who’ll spend it, and pump up the economy. They won’t save, and they don’t have houses or car loans to pay off, many of ‘em.

I also like the idea of spending money to replace government auto fleets with new, cleaner equipment. States set a price they’re willing to pay for a certain product, and buys equally from all who meet it. It’s sorta the wal-mart approach…

Hmm Bachmann wants to now widen the new 35W bridge. Could that be for purposes of the NAFTA super highway those on the right fear some much?

  40. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Michele Bachmann the embarassment from Minnesota, the woman who collected a lot of state money for raising over 20 foster children which is commendable unless in the process you are brainwashing them.

Last night on C-SPAN she was at the podium on the floor of congress praising the GOP God Ronny Raygun and his tax cut policies of the 80’s, of how Ronny saved Merica from a deep, deep recession brought on by Jimmy Carter. I thought she was going to tell us all how her God Ronny Raygun chopped down the Berlin wall with the edge of his hand (Apology to Jimi Hendrix).

Then she attacked FDR and his polices that built infrastructure and put millions of Americans back to work in the process. She quoted from the book “FDR, The Forgotten Man” written by another right wing nut job Amity Shlaes, who has defended Phil Gramms and his policies of deregulation.

Question is why didn’t the democratic leadership in congress censure her when she spouted off about so called anti-Americans in congress? (code word for anti-republican) And what would the snake from Stillwater say if the democrats said the same thing about the former criminal administration?
