Goldberg: ‘A man needs a humorless feminist like a fish needs a bicycle.’

On Monday night, after Helen Thomas asked a question at President Obama’s news conference, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly mocked her by comparing her to “the Wicked Witch of the East.” During his show last night, O’Reilly responded to the outrage over his comments, saying that he’s “a nice guy” because he could have called her “a pinhead.” Later in the show, right-wing media critic Bernard Goldberg chimed in, claiming that “a man needs a humorless feminist like a fish needs a bicycle.” Watch it:

Transcript:

O’REILLY: The play is about 30 yards from me. We’ve invited Will Ferrell. We don’t expect to see him, but he is invited.

Now, Helen Thomas. You know, Bernie, I know I’m a mean guy, and –but what do you think?

GOLDBERG: Let me first say a man needs a humorless feminist like a fish needs a bicycle, OK? So that’s No. 1.

But it’s interesting to me that these left-wingers, who — who didn’t say a word when their fellow left-wingers called George Bush a moron, when they called Dick Cheney a fascist, when they called Sarah Palin a racist, and when they threw Oreo cookies at Michael Steele because he had the nerve to be a conservative black man. They didn’t say a word about all of that.

So here’s my political analysis, and feel free to bleep this. Screw them. Screw them. They are unimportant people. They are on important people who shouldn’t be taken seriously.

When you made a good-natured joke, I very seriously said that Helen Thomas’ 15 minutes were up during the Lincoln administration. And you know what? If they want to take shots at me, and if they want to take shots at you, they need to know one thing: they’re throwing spitballs at battleships.

O’REILLY: But they never — they never learn. They do it, and then we get a segment at the top and two other segments out of it. Everybody sees it. Everybody knows how absurd it is. I should send Media Matters a little — I said Helen Thomas flowers already, because I have nothing against Helen. I want to send them a cake, but I want something to be inside the cake, and I might get…

GOLDBERG: You should send them flowers: black, dead roses.

O’REILLY: But they never learn, Bernie. They’re still doing this crap, and the poor lady who came in, who is a very courageous woman, she buys into this nonsense. She doesn’t know it’s a George Soros generated, you know…

GOLDBERG: They’re humorless. They’re humorless.

O’REILLY: Right.

GOLDBERG: Bill, they’re humorless, and they’re unimportant, and they’re un-serious.

O’REILLY: All right, we’d love to talk to Tina Fey about satire sometime, but I don’t expect to see her.

Ummm… did ANYONE ever do this? I think my weekly memo from the ‘militant left wing’ has been getting blocked by my spam filter. Is Goldberg just making stuff up?

  9. margerine says:

You’d think they’d just drop this entirely. It’s not like she did anything specific in recent memory that would rile them up. They’re essentially picking on her for no reason… It’s childish.

  10. ralph the wonder llama says:

Yes, deebaser, Goldberg is just making stuff up.

Well, to be fair to Goldberg, Steele made stuff up and Goldberg is just ignoring the evidence that it’s made up and propogating it further.

Point one: Bush IS a moron.

Point two: Cheney IS a fascist.

Point three: I don’t recall anyone calling Sarah Palin a racist.

Point four: No one ever threw Oreo cookies at Michael Steele. This is a conservative urban myth.

Point five: Goldberg would like all of us to take responsibility for the statements of individuals who profess to be liberals. Can we then tag him with responsibility for Jim D. Adkisson?

After all, Adkisson identified Goldberg as an inspiration in his manifesto.

Missed the point entirely, Goldberg, didn’t you? Not one of these was based on their appearance, like BOR’s comments were. And the Steele thing never happened. All of the things that Goldberg lists are “Observable Facts” based on actions, not superficial appearances.

If Goldberg wanted to make an equivalent point, he should have criticized the people that liked Palin as a candidate because she was “HOT” looking… oh, wait, that was mostly Republicans… can’t criticize the Repubs….

  34. Dumb Fox the Average Golfer says:

Glinda, the good which, was from the North. The house that Dorothy Flew dropped on the Wicked Witch of the West’s sister, who was the wicked witch of the east, but one never actually see anything of her except her shoes… if I remember the Wizard of Oz correctly.

    “- classic projection.”

But it’s an absolute fact that they are unimportant.

Trace, we have to talk about this concept of “absolute fact” you seem to carry around…

See, what you just said there? That’s your opinion.

Insisting it’s “absolute fact” doesn’t change that. See what I’m saying? The difference between “opinion” and “fact”?

Opinion is subjective, meaning that it is true for you but may not be true for others.

Fact is objective, meaning it is true in an objective, deterministic world. A Fact is true across the Reality-Based Communty™, while opinion is personal.

Let’s stop there for now and if you can get this one small thing down, maybe we can move on to the next step in your slow evolution as a thinker.

Oy. Way to miss the point of the thread, TiredTread.

O’Reilly displayed his lack of respect for women and for his elders (and betters) and then he brought on his drinking buddy Bernie to yuck it up about how “feminists” should lighten up and not get so bent out of shape every time some pinhead calls them a witch.

I see you’re taking that commitment to “serious debate” as far you’re able.

Folks, TiredTread has bestowed upon us a clear definition for “terrorist”.

It refers to those who crash planes into buildings, and no one else, apparently.

So suicide bombers in Israel — not terrorists. Car bombers in Baghdad — not terrorists.

And Jim Adkisson, the Knoxville church shooter who specifically targeted liberals — not a terrorist.

  43. Fred says:

    LibertyLover Says:

So, if you are correct, and I bow to your knowledge on the issue then that means that after all of these years oliely finally got one thing right…….that’s a milestone for him.

  44. DontTreadOnMe2009 says:

If the terrorists were truly freedom-fighters, they would be attacking the oppressive despots that run their own countries – better yet, they would throw off the shackles of the Franco-Anglo created nations that were drawn up by the same Colonial-minded folks we revolted against 233 years ago.

Maybe we’d even lend them a hand.

But instead, they project their problems onto the US and Israel because we are “infidels” i.e. non-Muslim.

They won’t go after their own “leaders” because they know they will be given the same treatment they dish out – beheadings, public execution, etc. – easier to go after the US and get their day in court.

Hijacking airplanes isn’t the ONLY method of terrorism, you know. Indiscriminately kidnapping and torturing and raping and executing civilians – all atrocities reported by Human Rights Watch as being committed by the Contras – are also acts of terrorism.

  47. DontTreadOnMe2009 says:

  49. dbadass says:

The vast majority of terrorist attacks DO happen against the leaders of these countries, which is why they tend to occur in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, etc. It’s a rarity that terrorist groups will cross borders – let alone oceans – and attack another state.

It’s certainly not easier to go after the US, and it’s damn near impossible for them to get their day in court, as the folks at GITMO will attest.

It’s absolutely my opinion. But I didn’t say it was “absolute fact” now, did I?

I’m perfectly qualified to express my opinion. In fact, I’m better qualified than anyone else to do so. Now, if I go and overstep my bounds and try to claim that my opinion is “absolute fact”, then you’ll have some room to criticize — as long as you cease expressing your opinion as “absolute fact”.

Or maybe if Helen Thomas is someday quoted as saying, “Press passes can’t be that hard to come by if the White House allows that old tranny Annie Coulter to sit within yards of the President,” you’ll have leave to call her vile names.

When your criticism is comprised solely of playground taunts, I’d say you’ve lost your argument.

Good job Clinton. The ol, what the definition of “is” is. Total BS.

So, Trace, is it your position that whenever someone makes a simple statement of “A is B”, this is to be taken as an assertion of “absolute fact”?

Is it not possible that one could state “A is B” as an opinion, without identifying it as such?

“I think I’m on pretty strong ground there.”

Uh, not you aren’t. You are trying to do the same thing that everyone saw right thru when Clinton tried it.

So, Trace, if you say “It’s cold out” but Sarah Palin thinks you’re nuts because she just came from Juneau where it was -5, and it’s only 35 in Traceytown, can see slam you for stating something ridiculous as ‘absolute fact” or could you claim that it was your opinion that 35 is cold because you weren’t in Juneau?

T5-I just wish I didn’t have to waste time by having annunciate on things that you should be able to figure out prior.

    That’s a serious question?

Well, if it were directed to a serious individual it might be, but it’s directed to you, so no.

But I’d still like to know — how exactly does my ability to vote make it critical for you to confirm my lack of importance?

Do you think that information will affect my vote in any way?

Tracist, I understand what “is” means.

I also understand how language works.

I recognize that when someone says something is an “absolute fact”, that is supposed to mean something specific.

Not to mention, that if “is” means “it’s an absolute fact” it would be redundant to write “it is an absolute fact” because “is” already means “an absolute fact”. Whew.

Glad to school ya there, sonny, or ma’m, as the case may be.

    http://www.relfe.com/media_can_legally_lie.html

In February 2003, a Florida Court of Appeals unanimously agreed with an assertion by FOX News that there is no rule against distorting or falsifying the news in the United States.

    FOX: RIGHT TO LIE

Pretty much everyone who cares about Truth is of the opinion that FOX “News” doesn’t put much stock in it. I wasn’t aware until reading this summary of a recent court ruling that FOX had set its lawyers out to defend its right to lie to its viewers though.

During their appeal, FOX asserted that there are no written rules against distorting news in the media. They argued that, under the First Amendment, broadcasters have the right to lie or deliberately distort news reports on public airwaves. Fox attorneys did not dispute Akre’s claim that they pressured her to broadcast a false story, they simply maintained that it was their right to do so.
    __________

    Tomato.. tomato… (It’s a spoken thing…)

The 2nd link goes directly to the Court’s opinion.

No doubt, t5 will engage in an absolutely STUNNING display of verbal gymnastics trying to make it appear that Fox, and the Court, really didn’t come to that conclusion…

Later all… don’t beat t5 up too badly.
