Openly gay, African-American comedian Wanda Sykes to headline White House Correspondents dinner.

207139949.jpgYeas & Nays reports that comedian Wanda Sykes “will headline the annual White House Correspondents Association Dinner this spring.” Sykes, who is well known for her roles on Curb Your Enthusiasm and The New Adventures Of Old Christine, came out of the closet last year in protest of California’s anti-gay marriage measure, Proposition 8. In September, Sykes mocked Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s foreign policy experience, saying “maybe I should be Secretary of State” because Palin had “just got a passport last year.”

She’s Gay? As in a practicing lesbian?
    Really?

Good on her then. Can’t wait to see the show.

  7. Zooey says:

    This should be good…

  8. Mr. Evil says:

I can’t wait to see what the rethuglicans will say about this. They will get the evangelicals to start an uproar. They will puke up everything they can about family values and how being gay is a choice and that gays are anti God and endless shit like that. Both shows should be fun!

  9. Jim Wolf359 says:

I just watched her apperance on Leno again where she talks about the election. Very funny but also a little seriousness their too. She should be a hit a the dinner.

  10. fletc3her says:

Wanda Sykes at her best is both hilarious and biting. This is as ballsy a choice as Colbert. Nice to see after several years of boring safe picks.

  11. katy says:

WOO HOO! oh my my my… that’n’s gonna be good…

No doubt they will demand that Dennis Miller be put on the program, to address the liberal imbalance of the affair.

But who can she make jokes about? Bush is gone and you can’t mess with the Messiah.
    ____________

Actually, you’d be surprised. Unlike up tighty righties, we on the left have REAL senses of humor. I’d expect this to be a truly hilarious affair.

So… how’d that 1/2 Hr News Hr show work out?

Or “An American Carol”? Oh… that’s right… the box office for “An American Carol” was DESTROYED by dastardly lib plot to sabotage the film! ***snicker…***

Yeeaaaah… I was just thinking about that. One of the most daring performances I’ve ever seen. Can’t help but wonder what Colbert would say he was on this bill…

  16. backup says:

Super funny. Good looking. It’s very cool she came out of the closet.

She’s a great choice. It will be a great show.

But if Wanda is going to be showcased by the Administration and progressives in general after comparing the Republican Convention to a meeting at Dr. Evil’s lair, where Bush is unwilling to show because he’ll be bludgeoned to death by Rudy Gulianni… maybe progressives could cut some slack to comments like these:

Maybe Wanda will help lighten everybody up.

    __________

Sorry… you’ve got it wrong Captain.

Wanda Sykes is a comedian. No one would confuse her comments w/ “serious” political commentary, which is what Billo and Bernie were trying to pass their schtick off as. Wanda did not ridicule the GOOPers for their age, or physical appearance, or gender, which is what BillO and Bernie did.

I don’t feel particularly outraged over what BillO did. It’s just part and parcel of his schoolyard bully persona, and stupid as all get out.

There’s a huge difference between the two. If you don’t understand, that…

  20. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Do you think that’s why LameTrollDan does it?

  23. Jim Wolf359 says:

Um, yeah Danny Boy I have. One of the funniest people I’ve seen. I haven’t seen her live yet. If she gets to Denver, I’ll definetly go see her.

    ___________

I think Dan is just a little too incoherent to be deliberately setting up a challenge round of Whack-A-Troll™, ralph. I’d say it’s a combo of self-pity, rage, and Sterno, along w/ a little too much cheap fortified whine for this time of day.

Hope Dan isn’t driving anywhere any time soon…

Just take a look at Bush’s face — he understands he’s being ridiculed.

It’s pretty sad when George Bush understands something better than you, eh Captain?

  42. The Republic of Stupidity says:

    ___________

    “I took ran across”???

Yer entitled to your own opinion Capt. I thought Colbert was incredibly brave and hysterically funny. Perhaps you need to stick to comedy acts like Dennis Miller, or the 1/2 Hr News Hr. More to your liking, huh?

I, on the other hand, felt terribly embarrassed for Botch and the GOOpers there that night. They were so out of touch, they didn’t even know who they had booked.

  43. backup says:

It’s pretty sad when George Bush understands something better than you, eh Captain?

Bush got it and so do I. The point you seem to miss is that it was supposed to be a comic event.

Colbert used it to push his partisan ideology. I get it. It wasn’t funny. It was sad and classless. I was embarrassed for Colbert and I would imagine he is probably embarrassed about the performance himself.

  44. backup says:

They were so out of touch, they didn’t even know who they had booked.

They knew who they booked. They just didn’t think anyone was classless enough to exploit the occassion the way Colbert did. It looks like Obama has probably learned from the experience and solicited someone in lock step.

  45. RandomChaos says:

Backup spews:I would imagine he is probably embarrassed about the performance himself.

    Houston we have a problem.

  46. dasm says:

    _____________

Well, I for one was pretty upset when Botch joked about not finding those weapons of mass destruction, after invading another country and killing THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of its civilian poplation, including untold numbers of the old, women, and children…

Ooops… when you said “sad and classless” I instinctively thought you were talking about Botch here. ‘Course, there’s always the chane you found that sort of material to be HYSTERICAL, huh?
    ______________

I was embarrassed for Colbert and I would imagine he is probably embarrassed about the performance himself.
    ______________

I kinda doubt that, Captain. If anything, it made Colbert an enduring legend… kinda like that guy in Iraq who threw his shoes at Botch.

I got a picture of that big shoe statue.. you know, the one the freedom-loving people of Iraq already took down, strictly for political reasons, mind you… and I had some of those personalized postage stamps made up w/ it.

  48. RandomChaos says:

I love Wanda Sykes. Jane and I have been fans of hers for years. She is very funny, and I’m sure she’ll do really well. I’m glad she came out last year. Just makes me love her even more.

  54. fergus says:

LtDan and backup are SOpissed that Obama is in the Oval Office instead of the butlers pantry that they can hardly catch a deep breath. Their constant panting is causing them to hyperventilate. They are scared to death that everything is going black right before their eyes. “Damn uppity fool thinks that he really is President. Somebody wake us up, PLEASE!!! It’s a horrible nightmare.” They just don’t know their place do they, Dan?

  55. backup says:

Republic. This fantasy that conservatives are so ignorant that they don’t know that Colbert is a liberal, is really pathetic.

Colbert is usually funny. And I appreciate his humor, although I disagree with many of his positions.

The idea that Bush was some kind of despot unwilling to be questioned or lampooned doesn’t hold any water. That is why Colbert was invited. The deal was that Colbert was supposed to be funny. He wasn’t. Bush and the press corp sat through it. Colbert did garner some fan support from Bush opponents. But, just because you get 10 bucks at the end of it, doesn’t mean the trick with the drunken hobo was worth it.

It was sad. I’ll still watch Colbert. Nobody’s perfect.

  56. green says:

I think LtDan is a dick – and a friggin idiot to boot. Why can’t the RNC send in better trolls?

  57. green says:

    ___________

He was… extremely funny. Everything you’ve said here is simply “You Opinion”, which you’re entitled to. I’m entitled to mine. I thought Colbert was FANTASTIC that night. What was he supposed to do… tell 2006’s equivalent of “Obama Cakes” jokes?

Apparently you expected him to make jokes about being a dictator… or perhaps the Constitution just being a piece of g-damned paper… or mebbe tell some real slappers about Clinton and Monica… AGAIN.

No doubt you find Dennis Miller HYSTERICAL…

Bullshit backup. If you honestly believe this, then why in the hell did he make sure that in all of the town hall events he attended, the only people who were allowed to attend the event were those walking in lockstep? Those who never questioned him, never talked truth to power, and never said anything that would seem as being a form of dissent against him?

    LTdan Says:

Why does she deserve to head the dinner?

Why did BushCo deserve to head the US government?

Wanda Sykes has not bought and stole elections; has not declared an illegal war; has not caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands; has not abolished civil rights; has not engaged in massive smear campaigns; has not lied to an entire country; has not perjured herself; has not evinced awe-inspiring hypocrisy; has not brought the US to the brink of bankruptcy; has not given multi-million dollar contracts to cronies WITHOUT making them bid on those jobs; has not appointed scores of advisers, cronies, and hangers-on who have been/are being tried for their crimes. . . what is it in these “qualifications” that would make anyone with a cerebral synapse conclude that they “derved” to head our government?

    LTdan Says:

Have any of you actually watcher her “act”. It usually goes like this. ” White people do ____, but black people do ____ ” * liberal audience laughs and claps *

    1. She is Black. When SHE includes Blacks in a routine, she’s willing to make fun of her OWN “in-group.” I’ve yet to find a repug who is willing to make fun of his/her repugnancy.

    2. She is willing to laugh at HERSELF. “Liberals” laugh because we have a sense of humor that does not rely on “pull my finger” jokes or pratfalls. Liberals can laugh at THEMSELVES.

    3. She does not base her humor on lies, slurs, attacks, delusions, sexism, or general nastiness.

We probably laugh at her almost as much as we laugh at you. Only we’re laughing WITH her. . .

  71. telestai2 says:

    backup Says:
They just didn’t think anyone was classless enough to exploit the occasion the way Colbert did.

–Much of the country didn’t think that anyone was “classless enough” to exploit 9/11 as a basis for eroding civil rights.
–We didn’t think that anyone was classless enough to launch an illegal war and lie to the electorate while so doing.
–We didn’t think that anyone was classless enough to proclaim “I hope Obama fails.”
–We didn’t think anyone was classless enough to compare his political party FAVORABLY to the Taliban.
–We didn’t think anyone was classless enough to out a CIA operative for possible political gain.
–We didn’t think anyone was classless enough to engage in multi-million dollar profiteering while the economy was so obviously crumbling.

Do NOT attempt to define Colbert’s performance as “classless.”
