Obama’s Wasted Efforts At Bipartisanship

obamamccain.gifIn the early days of his young presidency, President Obama has already accomplished a great deal, making a clean break from Bush on a variety of issues, signing the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and expanding the Children’s Health Insurance Program. And in a few short days, he’ll be putting his name to an economic recovery bill that will largely hew to the principles he laid out months ago.

In the midst of these accomplishments, there have been some wasted efforts. And most of those wasted efforts have come from a sincere — but unwise — attempt to ingratiate himself with uncompromising conservatives. Some examples:

– What Obama did: Trusted Judd Gregg when he indicated that, “despite past disagreements about policies, he would support, embrace and move forward with the president’s agenda.”

– What Obama got in return: A “change of heart” from Gregg, who said that he “couldn’t be Judd Gregg” at Commerce.

– What Obama did: Reached out to have dinner with right-wing pundits Bill Kristol, Charles Krauthammer, and David Brooks.

– What Obama got in return: A ripping from his right-wing friends, who called it the worst in “galactic history.”

– What Obama did: Tried to work with the House GOP by preemptively including tax cuts, stripping stimulative spending proposals, and attending their conference meeting.

– What Obama got in return: Zero votes (and a bunch of false myths about his plan)

– What Obama did: Tried to reach out to John McCain to work together on “solving our financial crisis.”

– What Obama got in return: Nothing. McCain voted against the legislation, and even went so far as to call it “generational theft” and hypocritically complained that it contained “corporate giveaways.”

Fortunately, the White House seems to recognize the errors of its ways. Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel conceded, “White House officials allowed an insatiable desire in Washington for bipartisanship to cloud the economic message a point coming clear in a study being conducted on what went wrong and what went right with the package.”

Update The House voted 246-183 to pass the economic recovery plan, again with zero Republican votes.

Like I said the other day, just as it takes two to fight, it also takes two to work together. The Rethuglic party attitude since Newt Gingrich and his ‘contract’ in ‘94 is this:
Democrats are the enemy, enemies can not be negotiated with, they can only be destroyed.
Rethugs have sewn the wind with this policy, let them reap the whirlwind.

Gregg simply woke up (thank God!) and the census bullshit was the final thing that convinced him to quit.

It’s becoming more and more obvious that Brotha O’s inexperience is more than showing. He has absolutely NO idea what he’s doing and he’s showing (in only a few weeks) that he is becoming the worst president in our history.

    God help us all!!

Brotha O doesn’t care a thing about bipartisanship. It’s all a ruse. In fact he actually wants the opposite!!

There is a vast left-wing conspiracy in this country & these liberals are working together to attack every decent & honorable institution in the nation, trying to turn this country into a communist state. Shame on them….

“This was a symbolic killing. Who I wanted to kill was every Democrat in the Senate & House, the 100 people in Bernard Goldberg’s book. I’d like to kill everyone in the mainstream media. But I know those people were inaccessible to me. I couldn’t get to the generals & high ranking officers of the Marxist movement so I went after the foot soldiers, the chickenshit liberals that vote in these traitorous people. Someone had to get the ball rolling. I volunteered. I hope others do the same. It’s the only way we can rid America of this cancerous pestilence.”

“I thought I’d do something good for this Country Kill Democrats til the cops kill me….Liberals are a pest like termites. Millions of them Each little bite contributes to the downfall of this great nation. The only way we can rid ourselves of this evil is to kill them in the streets. Kill them where they gather. I’d like to encourage other like minded people to do what I’ve done. If life aint worth living anymore don’t just kill yourself. do something for your Country before you go. Go Kill Liberals.”

Republicans have failed so catastrophicly in governing that they now face the very real possibility of being out of power for a few decades.

Their biggest fear(and a real danger for them as a party) is for Obama, and all that he stands for, to succeed where they just failed so publicly and so historically.

So now they do what ever they can to undermine him, even if it means sinking the American economy in the process.

He gave them far to much credit in thinking they would set partisanship asside to work with him.

  16. Buckie Boy says:

  17. DallasNE says:

Even in hindsight, I would not have wanted Obama to do this in any other way. By doing it this way Obama was able to show once and for all where the lines of demarcation in Washington DC lie. This exposed the Republicans an not caring squat about the suffering of the American people. Instead there only goal has been the political talking points and the next election. Well, the Republicans have walked the plank and sawed it off behind them. Not too bright!

Ronald Reagan was possessed by an alien from a moon of Saturn and he used the Iran Contra affair as a ruse to send Oreo cookies laced with mind-control substances into Iraq for Saddam Hussein. This was an effort to make Saddam link with al Quida and attack the US, leading to WWIII so the alien and his colleagues could take over the earth. Saddam still hated al Quida and the Taliban anyway, being unaffected by the Oreo cookies. So, the aliens possessed a bunch of other Republicans and established PNAC to accomplish the same purpose.

  42. tombaker says:

It was important to make a real attempt at working with the R’s. It was in deed, not just in words, as with Dubbie.

Now that the effort was made, and rejected, publicly, O is immunized against counter-charges in the future and can move on to other priorities. Again, he’ll get there and set things up in advance, so that by the time the Graham/Boehner guys catch up to him he’s already prepared their fate.

O is simply putting the debate 180 degrees ahead of where R’s try to keep it. Bettering them at their own rhetorical game. Hopefully more and more D’s will learn from him how to do that, and we won’t have to put up with any more mis-leadership from guys who can play games well but really represent only a tiny fraction of us.

Trivial criticisms aside, this new Pres. is kicking a ton of ass already, and I can’t wait to see how he punks the R’s next.

  43. Leftside Annie says:

And…this article doesn’t even mention the asshat CEO of Caterpillar – who told Obama *in private* that the stimulus package would enable the company to hire back laid off workers, and who then pulled the rug out under President Obama in public.

I’d bet the farm that was deliberately done.

  44. mary says:

I like the way the WSJ linked article ends:

‘But, he (Emanuel) said, Washington should have learned something about Mr. Obama as well, with the shift from bipartisan overtures to outright mockery of his opposition.

He has an open hand, Mr. Emanuel said. But he has a very firm handshake.’

  45. rimhotep says:

Now he can say “F&ck ‘em” and the people will be behind him every step of the way.

  46. scytherius says:

NOT NOT NOT a waste at all. The people both parties need are in the middle in varying degrees . . . the “independents”. And Independents care a lot about who is reasonable and who is not. Obama looked the epitome of reasonable and the GOP looked the epitome of Party Before Country a/k/a Rush Limbaugh.

This was not only a wasted effort but it probably ensured that, no matter what, the Dems are in power for at least a generation.

I don’t often disagree with you, but I am in complete disagreement with your ehadline.

  47. SP Biloxi says:

“A house divided against itself cannot stand…Our cause must be intrusted to, and conducted by its own undoubted friends-whose hands are free, whose hearts are in work-who do care for the result.”—Abe Lincoln’s remarks in the book ” Lincoln on Leadership” from “A House Divided” speech in which he accepted the nomination for Senator at the Republican State Convention in Springfield, Illinois (June 16, 1858)

So much of Obama’s speeches and actions echo Abe Lincoln. And the lawmakers who continue the path of destruction of Obama’s Presidency and hurting their continuents for either greed or pure political motive have given themselves a death sentence in their own run for re-election. Every decision that one makes good or bad come with consequences.

  48. McWars says:

Last time TP only removed JK’s single post. Hopefully this time they’ve banned him. Either way, thanks TP!

  49. rimhotep says:

“a very firm handshake” – I translate that to be the kind that puts a death lock on you and then mangles your knuckles until they touch each other across your hand.

    Screw them all now.

  50. paleolib says:

Aside from Rahm’s astute observation that letting the message slip for four days before going on the attack was a mistake, the bipartisan effort has the beneficial effect of exposing the Republicans as the conniving obstructionists that they are. Seeing the pigs line up at the trough after attacking the bill as wasteful will be icing on the cake. Not that seeing Gregg look like a sputtering goofball trying to explain why he withdrew over a stimulus bill he knew about before campaigning for the job was half bad either. Obama seriously wants to work with the Republicans. Failing that, having their reaction serve as a reminder to the voters that they deserve to be a shrinking minority is a decent consolation prize.

  51. politicscorner says:

It takes two parties to be bipartisan. Democrats were willing! re-puds were not!

re-pud definition of bipartisanship – include all of our ideas, regardless of whether or not they work or we vote NO!

Remember that Obama said he would consider good ideas.

If there are any moderate Republicans left in the House, you should rethink whether you want to go down with this re-pud sinking ship.

  52. po says:

I’m not thrilled with the results, but Obama got a lot more in return than many are giving him credit for. He’s shown — and it’s been reported all over — that he’s actually for bipartisan solutions and trying to get things moving in DC again. He’s also shown the GOP for what it is and has been for the past 20 years — an obstructionist party void of original ideas, but happy to trash anything someone else proposes.

As he stated, it’s a long term process. The next time the negotiating begins, let’s hope he’s learned his lessons gets promises before handing out the the goodies.

  53. McWars says:

Despite Obama being sincere, it’s become a masterstroke of genius for destroying what’s left of the pathetic GOP.

Obama’s numbers are rising; GOP frauds’ numbers are sinking.

    Masterful outcome, I’d say.

Besides, once someone is as evil and as brainwashed as these republicans, there’s literally “no hope” they they’re capapble of “getting it”.

    They’re totally braindead.

I don’t think it has been a mistake to showcase early how strongly and stubbornly opposed to him Republicans have decided to be. He does not need their support, in fact, and so he was graciously offering them an opportunity to participate. They’ve turned an ice cold shoulder to him, showing that they are not interested in the country’s well being, but only in the pocketbooks of the wealthy. And now the whole world knows precisely that. This has been, then, a very, very important way to display just how reactionary the Republicans have decided to be.

  68. ralph the wonder llama says:

    watchdog Says:
What liberals seam to be ignoring, is how this bill does nothing to stimulate the economy for the long haul.

What trolls constantly ignore is that a STIMULUS is not supposed to stimulate “for the long haul”.

It’s intended to give the economy the kind of boost it needs to regain its footing, and then the private sector should be the source of growth and wealth creation for all Americans.

Criticizing the stimulus for not working “for the long haul” is like criticizing a plumber’s snake for not keeping the drain cleared “for the long haul”.

  69. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

watchdog, what you seem to be ignoring is the fact that President’s with one-syllable names have historically created huge economic and social crises for the United States and that the subsequent President with a multi-syllable name has had to clean up the mess. You need to support O-ba-ma and his efforts to repair the damage of Bush. If you don’t learn from history you are doomed to repeat it. Water always seeks its own level. A bird in hand is worth two from Bush.

    This troll-logic is really fun.

  70. woodguy says:

This stimulus bill costs less than the Iraq occupation SO FAR. It’s amusing to hear the wingnuts argue that the Reconstruction and Recovery Bill won’t be spent until two years out and on the other hand the jobs won’t be “long term”. Hard to have it both ways. In road constuction, two years IS a long term job.

Wingnuts, for all their great economic acumen (heh) can’t connect school rehabilitation with “long term” stimulus. HELLO! Ya think an educated citizenry might help our economy?

    Critical thinking, anyone?

  71. Hoodathunk says:

Sorry, Bilbo but I doubt it. He will always listen. It is just time for him to nod, pat them on the head and go ahead with what must be done.

Every responsible parent knows you have two choices when confronted with a child throwing a tantrum. Reason with them logically (and waste your time) or put them in the corner for a timeout.

  72. rimhotep says:

Bilbo: I’m with you on that! The people are behind Obama right now after watching these juvenile idiots show themselves. Actually, I don’t believe anyting could have been more damanging in the eyes of the people at this critical time in this country than the way they acted. I hear people are planning to run against every last one of them who voted “no” when their terms expire. Huge campaigns will be mounted on the internet, through moveon, etc.

The Republicans became irrelevant during this last election. The small number still sitting in Congress will be ousted in 2010 and 2012. The republican party will be no more. And, they have their recent behavior to blame for it.

Obama extended his hand; they spit in his face. The american people were front and center and saw it all.

I don’t believe I’ve ever seen more disgust for the Republican Party on the streets right now in my entire lifetime – this past election included. The rage at these charlatans by the people is reaching a fever pitch.

Obama doesn’t need to continue to extend his arm across the aisle. He doesn’t need these thugs at all. He won the election and this country is his to move forward. Screw the obstructionists and put them into the corner of irrelevancy where they belong….where they’ve placed themselves by their abhorrent behavior.

  73. rimhotep says:

hoodathunk: I believe Obama will exercise the second option: Since they’ve already put themselves into the time-out corner, he’ll just speak to them from there and make further fools of them all.

  74. rimhotep says:

  78. McWars says:

Criticizing the stimulus for not working “for the long haul” is like criticizing a plumber’s snake for not keeping the drain cleared “for the long haul”.

Great analogy, ralph. The president sees this legislation as enabling us to find a bottom, provide a jolt to the slumping economy by reestablishing some pattern of sufficient spending activity, and laying the foundation for long-term economic growth. And you lay that foundation by investing in the person — health care, education, infrastructure. Because there is no sustained economic growth when you have uneducated, diseased people all over the place. Well, maybe the tire shops would do well with all those potholes in the roads.

rhf and I will disagree (and spar) on many things, but this we will agree.
When Bush took office, he promised a “bipartisan” hand to heal wounds, only to completely shut out the left for 6 years, leading our country deep into a recession with his failed policies.
Obama promised “bipartisanship” and actually extended his hand, only to be repeatedly bitten by the rabid right. Fool me twice, shame on me (or is it “Won’t get fooled again?).
The mandate demands action for our country. The right demands that the left fail. It’s time for Obama to do what’s right for the country!

  109. Fred says:

DRxJ, I think the right is being played. How can they dig out if they keep doing what they are doing?

Time will tell. Obama gets to play out his hand and we will see.

    So far it’s:
    Obama: 1
    Rush: 0

  110. WAYNEBRO says:

All the republicans did was buffalo the Obama administration into making concessions that were guaranteed to cripple the bill right out of the gate.

Then after getting those concessions, they all voted against it knowing that the damage they did to it have a good chance of making the bill ineffectual. So when it fails to stimulate the economy they can brag about not voting for it.

Even though the reason it may turn out to be ineffectual is due to the concessions they demanded in exchange for their votes.

The votes they promised in exchange for those concessions.

    Which they got.

And then reneged on their promise.

Showing President Obama that they have no honor and cannot be trusted.

  111. wonker says:

I actually think he’s doing the right thing by appealing for bipartisanship.

the harder re-election campaigns they’ll be facing.

Look how popular congress is right now.
democrats are enjoying a much higher favorable rating
    than republicans.

He needs to keep up with killing them with kindness.
The public is obviously not happy with the gop

  112. WAYNEBRO says:

Its time for the love jamboree to end. Enough of the Charlie Brown act. It was nice that President Obama wanted to reach across the aisle and no one can say he didn’t go out of his way to extend his hand. But all they’ve done is spit in it and worse, they’re playing him for a fool. They are using his good nature to trap him and cripple his efforts to save the country.

And in the process, the people are being screwed.

Its time for President Obama to stop kicking the football every time Lucy promises not to pull it out from under him making him fall on his ass. Its time for him to get smart, and let Lucy realize she doesn’t have enough players on her team to win the game so either get on board with the recovery efforts or get out of the way.

The republicans have done enough damage to this country and to the world over the past 8 years. Its time for President Obama to honor his commitment to protect the Constitution and the people from all enemies, both foreign AND domestic.

Not bad for just the first 60 pages…

    WAYNEBRO Says:
All the republicans did was buffalo the Obama administration into making concessions….

Obama got most of what he wanted. I think he’s the big winner of this pissing contest.

Well I disagree with that somewhat Fred. Of course he got the bill passed but we had the votes. So he got the bill but honestly if a democratic President who has a party majority in both houses of congress couldn’t get an economic bill passed in a national economic emergency then that would be ridiculous, so passing it while a win, isn’t much of won.

Especially in how it was won. Did you see the laundry list of programs that got cut? Billions to programs that had promise of either stimulating the economy or providing relief to those who needed it. Sure theres some good things in there but I’m with Rachel Maddow on this one.

He’s the President. Its an emergency. He has a majority in both houses of congress. We need a spending bill, and more spending means more relief as Rachel pointed out last night.

Giving concessions to the republicans that took away from that spending weakened the bill, and that’s not much of a win if you have to weaken the bill to get it through when you are the dominant party.

Work the the republicans, sure. But when they all voted no in the House after giving into their concessions the dems should have scrapped the bill, rewrote it the way they wanted it, and told the republicans to suck an egg.

And when the old fat warthog republicans in the Senate led by Bonehead Boner threatened to filibuster, the dems should have ordered in mattresses and some good Chinese take out and said “bring it on”.

This was a win, sure. But it wasn’t much of one.

  117. Liberal Kelly says:

I’m GLAD they all voted no. Eff them. I don’t want them taking any credit whatsoever for this bill.

  118. Bonnie says:

    Got it.

  121. dasm says:

The real lesson here, which is no surprise to the majority of Americans, and the vast majority of the rest of the world, is that Republicans have no connection to the people, except the disgustingly rich; the Republicans have no interest in actually improving the economy and helping ordinary Americans; and the Republicans are not at all for country, but are only for their party, which will soon be obsolete if they don’t embrace some change of their own. At present they continue to embrace only past Bush failed policies, tax cuts for the rich, and the total blocking any attempt at parties working together to help America.

  122. Game of Life says:

Under Clinton: He’s not MY president
    Under Bush: Support our president
Under Obama: back to 8 more years of He’s not MY president.

  125. curious says:

Poor Obama. He thought civilized behavior and discourse would bring a like response from Republicans. Not possible. They see the desire to be civilized as a weakness. They see compassion as something for suckers. They see anyone promoting good for the many as anti-everything Republican. And they are right.

Everything comes with the dollar sign for them. The only social program set forth by a Republican that worked was from Nixon. It was the EPA. Social programs that benefit the majority of Americans is an anathema to them. They never set forth social programs. Bush tried with no child left behind. He not only forgot to fund it, but it failed because it did not work.

Nothing will work regarding bipartisanship. It is sad but true. Obama is finding that out. He has been rejected every time. Eventually Obama will have to admit a sad failure in that area. It’s like trying to explain color to a blind person. They cannot see it.

  126. Rascalcat says:

Cut the Prez some slack, my friends!

Did it ever occur to anyone that these bi-partisan gestures just might be a shrewd political gesture on Obama’s part. I mean, since he ran on a bi-partisan platform, how would it look if he had not made these gestures. Who looks bad? Obama for making the gestures, or the Repubtards for ignoring them.

Let’s say the economy is still bad or only slightly improved, in two years at election time. Who looks bad? Obama who bent over backwards to include the tards, or the tards who decided to be viewed as obstuctionists?

Give BHO some credit. He may be the shrewdest, the smartist, and the best communicator of any President in my lifetime.
    He’s like Reagon with brains.

Give the guy a little trust, I think he has earned it.

    “Hell, yes!”

    Zooey Says:
Actually, I’m beginning to think President Obama is playing the Republicans like the proverbial fiddle.

If only that were true! Unfortunately for the stimulus bill and the country Obama is confused as to his job description. He still acts like the minister trying to make peace with his congregation instead of the leader telling them to sit down a listen for a spell! Even Rahm admitted today that Obama made a mistake in focusing the goal on bipartisanship instead of JOBS – well DUH!

Obama envisions himself as the great peacemaker in the mold of Lincoln. But he forgets Lincoln made WAR and not PEACE and that is his legacy!

You are way off the mark. Rahm didn’t call President Obama’s civil gestures toward the repugs a mistake.

President Obama is making reference to his beloved State and lincoln who happens to come from his state. Second President Obama only referenced raybraindead when it came to him reversing the populace way of thinking during that time. you have to admit, during his presidency, racism came back like it never had before. Civil rights were destroyed.

    Game of Life Says:
I wish people would stop comparing President Obama to raynut.

Unfortunately OBAMA makes that comparison and reference himself. In fact two of Obama’s biggest inspirations are both Republicans – RayGun and Lincoln. That always gave me pause and was one of the reason he was not my first choice to lead us. Obama is still quite naive and has an unhealthy admiration for both politicians that aren’t well grounded in reality. Unfortunately for our economy and the stimulus this distraction of Obama’s image making is taking him away from his duties of leadership and imperiling us all. Obama needs to start channeling Bill Clinton and not an idealized vision of Lincoln if he wants to save our country!

Zooey you may have a point. He is enjoying being President even under all this pass and present repug mess.

Please don’t take President Obama’s civil nature as a mistake. Kindness is never a mistake. It’s the repugs’ mistake and they look like widdle bitty dumbass marionettes.

President Obama isn’t worried about his image, you silly goose, he wrapped that up a long time ago, ask the majority of the US voters, go ask Germany too. he’s a natural. He has a natural love of our country.
I know why you would take his kindness, truth, honesty and courtliness as weaknesses; you being a repug and everything.

It’s the repugs that are stalling.
It’s the repugs taking credit for stalling.
It’s the repugs self-congratulations and to each other because of their stalls.
It’s the repugs who wanted more tax breaks for the wealthy.
It’s the repugs who are stalling jobs to the people.

repugs miserably failed for 8 long ass years, It’s not feasible to following them one second more.

President Obama is doing a lot for the people. This is the way it should be and not your way.

  133. Constant Weader says:

It’s never a mistake to be polite to the dumbclucks (and to refrain from calling them names!) — & a lot of noncynical right-wingy voters appreciate Obama’s outreach.

Obama should keep on being real nice & inviting the wingers over to his place to sit on the historic wing chairs, but he should ignore everything they say because they are mean and stupid. With all due respect.

  134. Old Uncle Dave says:

The Repugs represent the corporate aristocracy. Their objection to the stimulus bill is that it might actually help the proles.

  135. 45ACP says:

I suspect President Obama is a master strategist and has lured the goppers into a trap. It helps, of course, that the goppers seem to amazingly tone-deaf and / or frightened to death of their lunatic base.

I live in Texas, which seems to me to be the as*hole of the universe (ok, Mississippi and Louisiana are in the running). And, I interact with these racist, regressive goppers every day. I don’t think the southern states will vote Democratic (much less for a black man) for at least another 100 to 150 years.

Children here are propagandized from birth with hardcore racist gopper and /or religious right beliefs. Little children have no initial defense against this vile indoctrination. But, a funny thing happens as the kids grow older. Many of them throw off the propaganda and begin to think for themselves. It’s a very long process.

I think Obama understands this state of affairs better than anyone. Neither he nor the Democrats will carry the deep South for decades to come, if that soon. BTY, I think this applies to Tennessee, West Virginia, and Kentucky as well. I mean Christ, JAY ROCKEFELLER a Democratic Senator representing West Virginia. He votes consistently with the goppers.

My thesis holds, oddly enough, only if the pain in the South doesn’t reach titanic proportions. It’s ironic that if the pain gets bad enough because goppers obstruct a recovery, even these goobers will throw their elected officials under the bus. But the economy here will have to get really bad for that to happen.

The paradox is that if the goppers succeed in obstructing an Obama recovery, they lose in the South. And, if they don’t succeed in obstructing an obama recovery, they lose in the South.

So Obama will continue to extend his hand and the goppers continue to bite it. Henceforth, however, Obama stays well ahead of the news cycle and keeps the gopper reacting to his message. A message communicated with style and grace. His effort will be made in the “swing states” that have shown they are open to a change.

With this strategy in place, the Democrats will be offering less and less compromise to the goppers who will become even more obstructionist and shrill just before their heads explode.

    What say ye?

  136. Wang111 says:

If Obama helped black people, his efforts would not be “wasted.”

Obama is a disgrace to black people.

Is Obama going to financially reward black Katrina victims for having been racially discriminated against by Bush?

    Where is the money?

I don’t think Obama would have any problem, hypothetically, with slavery happening all over again.

Maybe one remembers that Kanye West said, “Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

We have uncovered something far more horrifying.

It is practically like Obama “doesn’t care about black people.” (And Obama is black.)

There are all sorts of personalities.

There actually are screwed up black people who secretly don’t like their own kind.

There may even be black lunatics or freaks who would fancy themselves prancing around wearing a KKK outfit or uniform with the swastika on it.

Maybe Obama even fantasizes about hanging black people by nooses.

    I like black people.

    Black people are cool!

    Black people are great.

But now, white people don’t have to worry about Obama interfering with racial discrimination inflicted by white people against racial minorities while Obama is president of the United States.

It is practically just as bad as if the white supremacist at heart, George W. Bush, is still running the country.

For example, Bush murdered a black woman—Margie Schoedinger.

“One of those very least were George Bush’s personal complicity in the death (murder to be precise) of my friend Margie Schoedinger in September of 2003. Determining the exact whereabouts and contacts of [then] president-elect George Bush on September 21 thru 22, 2003, should be entirely lacking in difficulty” (Leola McConnell (Nevada Progressive Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in 2010). Retrieved November 29, 2008, from http://leolaforussenate.blogspot.com/2008/02/le…).

Obama should have the guts to assemble workers from the FBI and/or one or more state attorney general offices and say something similar to the following:

“I, Obama, am the most powerful person in America now. Bush is no longer the president and thus no longer the most powerful person in America. I, Obama, am in control now. I, Obama, demand that the ultimate law-enforcement workers in this country investigate Bush and then proceed to have him locked away for life or executed for murdering the black woman—Margie Schoedinger. I, Obama, am black, and I find Bush’s murder of Margie Schoedinger to be personally offensive. I, Obama, feel it is once again like the time of slavery when white people killed black people with no sheriff, prosecutor, or court to stop it from happening or prosecute it. I, Obama, am not going to go around in the modern-day democracy feeling like a black slave of white people—especially while I am the president of the United States. I, Obama, want Bush brought down for murdering a black woman. I, Obama, want Bush brought down for racially discriminating against black people pursuant to Hurricane Katrina. I, Obama, am going to supply financial rewards to the black people who were harmed by Bush’s racial discrimination and who are still alive. I, Obama, am taken aback by Bush having been so evil in wrongfully causing the deaths of so many black people pursuant to his racist response relative to Hurricane Katrina. I, Obama, am going to take advantage of my time as a racial-minority president and not allow “Bush’s KKK-Neo-Nazi mentality” to rule over and oppress black people in America.”

Obama is not doing anything about Bush’s murder of Margie Schoedinger.

Obama has not given a penny to any black victims of Bush’s racial discrimination.

Obama needs to say: “I can change and act like a black person instead of disgracing myself all over the place!”

Obama needs to say: “Change—Yes I can!”

Put “George W. Bush” AND “first 100 days in office” AND “2001″ in the Google search engine and you will find the overwhelming majority of the articles are about Obama. Most of them are ridiculously damning.

Here is some of Ws accomplishments from his first 100 days:

Table shows amount paid (in millions of dollars) to the Republican election campaign and that amount as a percentage of each industry’s election spending.

    Industry | $m | % | The payback

Tobacco | 7.0 | 83% | Killing off federal lawsuits against cigarette manufacturers

    Timber | 3.2 | 82% | Restrictions on logging roads scrapped

Oil and gas | 25.4 | 78% | Restrictions on CO2 emissions abandoned; Kyoto scrapped; moves to open Arctic refuge to drilling

Mining | 2.6 | 77% | Scrapping of environmental clean-up rules; arsenic limits in water supply

Banks and credit card companies | 25.6 | 60% | Bankruptcy bill making it easier for credit card companies to collect debts from bankrupt customers

    Pharmaceuticals | 17.8 | 68% | Medicare reform without price controls

Airlines | 4.2 | 61% | Federal barriers to strikes; backpedalling on antitrust legislation

And, of course, the biggest taxcut since the Reagan era.

    Here’s a quote from a banking lobbiest:

“We have come out of the cave, blinking in the sunlight, saying to one another, ‘My God, now we can actually get something done,’ ”

    Here’s an early warning:

The only risk to the mega-corporations’ control over Washington appears to come from within – the danger of overreaching and provoking an electoral backlash against their greed and environmental damage. “At some point – perhaps as soon as the 2002 midterm elections, surely no later than the next presidential election – the public will be aghast at what is happening,” Reich argues. “The backlash against business may be thunderous.”

Being “Bi-Partisan” isn’t a ploy, it’s not a tactic – it’s a philosophical shift from the “My Way or the High-way” attitude of the past. It’s not about what you “GET” this time, it’s about being a honest broker Each and EVERY Time so that people know they can trust you, and therefore they *should* be trust-worthy themselves or else end up looking like the asshats they are. Obama didn’t lose any significant clout by at least *trying* to do this deal with some humility and outreach – in fact, he gained something far more valuable. Respect.

  140. trysomecommonsense says:

How about some honesty? President Obama reached out his hand and offered to work with the Republicans. The Republicans shook his hand and agreed to work with the Democrats. Then, neither side did a damn thing. I agree with Vyan that “It’s not about what you “GET” this time, it’s about being a honest broker Each and EVERY time”. However, both sides seem disingenuous…only paying lipservice to “bipartisanship” doesn’t move anything forward and both parties share equal blame.

  141. LiberalVoter says:

The Republicans are doing everything they can to tank the country. Screw the little guy getting hurt. Hopefully the koolaid drinkers that are left will see the light. Country First, another idiotic oxymoron.

He had to try but do not believe that he did not learn by this. Next time around the GOP will be hung out to dry and it will serve them right.
