Clinton hits GOP for automatically opposing Obama’s agenda.

On Sunday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said that President Obama is off to a bad start in part because Obama didn’t “sit down together” with Republicans (even though he did). Today, CNN asked President Clinton to respond to McCain, and Clinton ripped the GOP as being simply “automatic” in its opposition to Obama’s agenda:

CLINTON: [T]here’s 100 economic studies which show that you get a better return in terms of economic growth on extending unemployment benefits or investing money in energy conservation jobs to improve buildings than you do giving people in my income group a tax cut. But it doesn’t stop them. Those guys are on automatic. You punch a button and they give the answer they give you.

Watch it:

“I find it amazing that the Republicans who doubled the debt of the country in eight years and produced no new jobs doing it, gave us an economic record that was totally bereft of any productive result are now criticizing him for spending money,” Clinton added.

    Krugman:

Last week the Federal Reserve released the results of the latest Survey of Consumer Finances, a triennial report on the assets and liabilities of American households. The bottom line is that there has been basically no wealth creation at all since the turn of the millennium: the net worth of the average American household, adjusted for inflation, is lower now than it was in 2001.

At one level this should come as no surprise. For most of the last decade America was a nation of borrowers and spenders, not savers. The personal savings rate dropped from 9 percent in the 1980s to 5 percent in the 1990s, to just 0.6 percent from 2005 to 2007, and household debt grew much faster than personal income. Why should we have expected our net worth to go up?

There’s a republican infestation eating away at our country, fomenting disease and death…we need to spray…

The Carlyle Group grew like a mustard seed during the new millenium. They went from $12.5 billion to $91.5 billion under George W.

They also benefit from the $26 billion tax cut for companies buying back debt. Guess the break the less wealthy citizen gets for dipping into their IRA or 401(k) to save their house? Nada, zippo, zero.

    WaPo says:

District-based Carlyle Group, a giant private-equity firm, has raised around $1 billion and hopes to add $2 billion more for investments in financial institutions that come up for sale under President Obama’s economic rescue plan, according to people familiar with the company’s plans.

Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner last week said he will seek private-sector help for the banks, offering loans at favorable rates and putting up government backing to reduce the risks to investors like Carlyle.

With $40 billion in cash on the sidelines waiting for the right play, Carlyle could find many profitable deals in the financial sector.

Say what you will about ‘Slick Willy’ but the man left his administration with the economy in a surplus, nations trusting him (evidenced by the fact that his outreach programs in the past 8 years have been successful.) and the fact that he could have spoken up (and should have) about the Shrub.

Ok, he got a hummer in a closet. That was personal and amongst three people. I will buy the fanciest pizza anyone can imagine if anyone can convince me that George could have gotten the same treatment without cash.

  8. Jackie says:

It’s clear that with the 8 years of the Clinton Administration all Americans did better and Clinton balanced the budget. Now when Bush stole the election Republicans and their close suppers benefitted from the thief of the US Treasury. Those who continue to have blinders on are doing so because they want to continue to get taxpayers kick back. When Bush came into the Oval Office he set out a stimulus plan that amounted to 1.6 Trillion dollars to build jobs and help the American people. That money was then divided between friends, business and Republican Law Makers. Those that got the money are still looking to continue the GOP mission. Now President Obama has a Stimulus for the millions of American taxpayers left behind but he’s including those who even got Bush money. It is strange to hear both Clinton and Obama talk with such intelligence while for 8 years Bush spoke Bushism or what ever that excuse for stupidity the Media made up for him.

  11. Chris LeJeune says:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The republicans had their turn. They completely controlled the congress for nearly 12 years, and the presidency for eight. There is no reason for them to tell us now what they would do or what their ideas are. All we have to do is look back at the last 8-10 years, and you can see prime examples of what their reaction would be. And what the results of those decisions were. Now they want to criticize President Obama, but have nothing to offer except for the same methods we’ve seen over the last 8 years that didn’t work.

  12. citizen_pain says:

Bill did a great job. I liked the press a button and get your talking point line.

I wish he’d comment on the right wing’s obsession with blaming him for all the debacles of ‘Lil Bu$h. Especially this fallacy that he caused the housing meltdown by forcing Fannie and Freddie to make risky loans to minorities or unqualified buyers.

  13. AngryOne says:

As predicted, House and Senate Republicans on Friday maintained their unified front in turning their backs on President Obama’s economic recovery package. As it turns out, Obama wasn’t the first Democrat to learn the hard way that bipartisanship is a one-way street for the GOP when it comes to the economy. In 1993, Bill Clinton’s $496 billion stimulus and deficit-cutting program passed without a single Republican vote. But in 1981 and again in 2001, substantial numbers of Democrats acquiesced in backing regressive Reagan and Bush tax cuts which, also as predicted, drained the federal treasury.

For the details and a table comparing the party line votes, see:
“On Stimulus, Republicans Party Like It’s 1993.”

I say that bit of character assassination is a ripoff from the far more apropos “Tricky Dick.”

The Right is so fraudulent, even their bloody smears are plagiarized.

If you think about it, “Slick Willy” is a hell of a goddam thing to call a guy who was tied with FDR as most popular President of the 20th century. When you factor in a multi-million-dollar smear campaign directed again him, his family, and his cat–along with a relentlessly hostile media–his popularity amounts to an absolute, provable miracle–like levitating. Somebody alert the Pope.

Clinton has more intelligence, more charisma, more global acceptance, more integrity than Bush, Cheney, McCain, Palin, Steele, etc. will ever have. People listen to Clinton; they scorn & laugh at the others in my list. 43. spanky1984 says:

    To my fellow American’s

    When will we say enough?
When will we say no more?

While we are being kicked out of our homes, told that we no longer have a job, told that we have no more health care, told we must take pay cuts, our government continues to loot our treasury for the benefit of the elite oligarchs and the rich corporations that really run this country. While we have everything taken from us, our government continues to give everything we have left to the same people that are taking everything we have. When will we say enough?

Look around you. How many of us are losing our homes? How many are losing their jobs? How many have lost their health care? How many have lost their retirements.? How many have lost their savings?

Our government demands that we the people give out trillions of dollars to the banks and the greed of wall street, all so the elite oligarchs can continue to increase the control they have over us. In just the last five years the elite have gone from owning 37% of everything in this country to 60%. Thats right they now own and control 60% of everything in this country. In this same time we have seen what we the people have drop by about 40%. When are we going to say no more?

How many us us realize that since September 2007, more than 9 Trillion, thats right more than 9 Trillion dollars of OUR money has been either given to, loaned to or guaranteed by our government to the bankers and robber barons of wall street. How many of us realize that Bank of America has been given almost 150 Billion dollars in direct cash and guarantees, You could go out and buy BOA for a mere 27 Billion. If the company is only worth 27 Billion, then what in the world are we doing by allowing our government to give them that much? It is the same story with all the banks. They are being given 5 times what they are even worth. They are insolvent. When are we going to say enough?

Think about this for a moment. Our government says we must give them trillions to keep the economy going. The money is taken from OUR treasury,(yes, OUR treasury not theirs) is given to the banks, and we the people must pay it back with interest. Then those banks loan this money, (thats right the same money we already have to pay back with interest) to us the people with interest again. We are paying for this twice in every aspect. Even though we have given almost 10 trillions dollars already, they still want more. Now our corrupt government stands up and tells us they will need to give 2-3 trillion more of our tax dollars to the banks and robber barons of wall street. When will we say no more?

But even as they ask for more, they try to stop any help from going to us the people. Those that demanded, (almost all those demanding were Republicans) even threatened some members of congress with martial law if the bailout know as Tarp was not passed right this minute. These are the same corrupt politicians , that when a stimulus bill that might actually help a few of us was being worked on, stood up and declared in front of congress that passing the stimulus was the same as welfare. They even called it generational theft. Wait a minute here. They can demand that we give from OUR treasury to the rich elite and their company’s, so they can loan it back to us, and pay their ceo’s 20 billion in bonuses and take lavish trips worth OUR money, but yet will tell us that giving anything back to us, the people is welfare. Who the hell do they think pays the taxes that puts that money into the treasury in the first place. Not them. 50% of the companies in this country don’t even pay taxes. They then have the balls to stand up and tell us that they still need another 2-3 trillion dollars more of OUR tax dollars to GIVE to the banks and robber barons of wall street. I don’t know about my fellow Americans, but right now I don’t have any more to give. Do you? When are we going to say enough?

Every corrupt politician that demanded and voted for the Tarp, but against the stimulus should be removed from office. I mean, removed right now. We the people have that right. USE IT!
That would send a message to the rest , to start listening to us. It is no longer a system run on the good ole, OF the people, by the people, for the people. Right now it’s, Of the people, by the rich and special interest groups for the rich and special interest groups. When will we say no more?

Right now there are talks going on behind closed doors, where the oligarchs that run this country are trying to use social security and Medicare to pay for bailouts The elite oligarchs are trying to take everything that we have. After all if you are destitute you will then do whatever they want.

Even the energy commission is floating the idea of a carbon tax to place on us. Heck, they even have introduced legislation to tax our cows and pigs. Stop and think how much we actually pay in taxes already.

    We all pay Federal tax
We all pay Social Security tax.
    We all pay Medicare tax.
We all pay State income tax.
We all pay local income taxes.
Most all pay local sales tax.
    Most all pay property tax.
    Most pay vehicle tax.
    Etc. Etc.

Then we also have to pay taxes on our phone bills, cable bills, electric bills, water bills, heck we even have to pay tax on the tax.

I mean, think about how much the average middle class American actually pays in taxes now. How can we continue to afford these new taxes they are going to hit us with. How much greed must we put up with. When will we say enough?

How many of us realize that the Federal Reserve is NOT part of our government. It is an independent group of robber barons that have been looting our treasury since 1913. They simply print the money and then give it to the treasury. We must pay it back with interest. There is a provision in the law that would allow us the people and our government to buy back the reserve for 500 million dollars. In fact several congressmen have tried to introduce legislation to do just this, but they are always blocked by those that control our congress and senate. We have the power to buy it back. USE IT!

The United States of America belongs to us the PEOPLE.
It does not belong to the government. It does not belong to wall street, and it sure the hell does not belong to the ruling elite oligarchs who are every day gaining more control over it.

The corruption in our government has become rampant. Our congress and senate do only what is good for the ruling class and themselves. They even gave them selves a pay raise last year. Did we get one? NO, we had our pay cut. They continue to pass laws that give more power to the government and the ruling elite. While at the same time passing draconian laws that continue to take our rights and our property from us. When will we say enough?

Every day that passes, we see the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Every day that passes we see the ruling elite get stronger as they make us weaker.

The people of this country must remove those rose colored glasses that we wear, and open our eyes to what is happening, before it is too late.

If we the people do not stand up, be heard and take our country back, there will soon be no country left to take back.

We must stop the greed and corruption in our government before it destroys OUR country.
We must stop the elite oligarchs before they destroy OUR country.

If we do not stand up and be heard right now, it will be too late for our children and grandchildren.

Is the tyranny and economic collapse we are facing, something we wish to leave them? It is not something I wish to leave them. For they have done nothing to deserve it.

We can no longer allow them to loot OUR treasury with more bailouts of the banks and greedy wall street.

We can no longer allow our congress, senate and the oligarchs to take away OUR rights and shred OUR constitution.

We can no longer allow them to take everything we have.

When are we going to say enough?

When we no longer can. Or maybe when we are all living in those FEMA camps and begging them for food.

We must stand up against this tyranny that we face. If we do not, we will all be the slaves of the ruling elite oligarchs and their minions.

We should not fear our government. After all , we the people are the ones that should control this country.

We must no longer allow the debt that they are piling on us and our children.

    SAY ENOUGH!!

    STAND UP AND BE HEARD!

    THIS IS OUR COUNTRY!

    TAKE IT BACK!

Our forefathers fought tyranny to make this country free. They earned our freedom with their lives, we must continue to keep this country free and in the hands of the people. We cannot allow them to have died in vain.

The United States Of America belongs to it’s PEOPLE, not it’s government.

We must protest what is happening. We must take to the streets and be heard.

If we can not do this peacefully, then we must do it any way we can.
For we are fast running out of time.

We must remind the government and their elite handlers, that there are 200 million legally registered fire arms in this country, that we the people posses . There are another 200 million illegal firearms in this country. We the people are 300 million strong, that means we have one for every man and woman that wishes to stand up and defend our country.

We must all take off those rose colored glasses before it is too late.

I want to share a few quotes before I go.

“A patriots must always be ready to defend his country, even if that means defending it from his government.”
    Edward Abbey

“When the government fears the people, there is liberty; when the people fear the government, there is tyranny”.”
    Thomas Jefferson

“Liberty, once lost, is lost forever.”
    John Adams

“None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free”
    Johann Wolfgang von Geoth

Please feel free to pass this on to others. In fact please do

    IT IS TIME TO STAND!!
    STAND UP AND BE HEARD!!

My best regards to anyone that reads this,

Nice way of saying Republican’ts are all “Kneejerk Reactionaries”.

Philandering or not, you can always count on Bill to play it classier than his detractors ever do/will/could.

And, as I KEEP telling the Botchlings who cannot understand why I “gave the evil Clinton a pass” but unfathomably–to them–despised our deeply-religious Botch: Clinton only got HIMSELF into trouble. Not ONE of his actions cost Americans their lives, jobs, civil rights, economy, safety, welfare, retirement, or self-respect. Not ONE.

    Hoodathunk Says:

Ok, he got a hummer in a closet. That was personal and amongst three people. I will buy the fanciest pizza anyone can imagine if anyone can convince me that George could have gotten the same treatment without cash.

B-b-but THAT would have been a SIN!

[Whereas effing an entire nation and most of our allies was just business as usual.]

    Hoodathunk Says:

spencersmom, say what you will of Condi (and I will agree with most of it) but if she ’serviced’ the Shrub I will keep you in pizza for life.

Rove is another (and totally disgusting) matter.

Excuse me. I have to go hurl at that visual: Rove and ANYONE.

The Jap Ambassador was in the White house as the sneak attack was being carried out.

I purely HATE having to acknowledge bm’s accuracy. Damn. But, being a progressive rather than a troll, I do acknowledge it.

And I’ve always wondered WHY the US spent so much time and money to re-build a country that had tried to take over much of the world. Must be that tired ol’ “do unto others” ethic: the one that says “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The rethug version of that ethic, so touchingly illustrated when Botch declared war on Iraq, varies just a bit: “do unto others BEFORE they do unto you.”

    MCMetal Says:

Why in the hell is the least knowledgeable old fart in the US government even listened to on a topic he has admitted he knows absolutely nothing about ?

I admit to some confusion, McMetal: I can’t choose “the least knowledgeable old fart” from amongst the vast array of rethugs, trolls, neocons, hate-spewers, “true believers,” and/or knee-jerkers who know nothing about ANY topic upon which they pontificate.

Kevin Draher–regards right back at ya! Good selection of quotes.

    @Kevin,

Brevity is the soul of wit.

Ergo, the incessant spewing of repugs proves precisely that they HAVE no wit. [Or, as me dear old grey-haired Mummy used to say, "If [fill in the blank] had half a wit more, he’d be a half-wit.”]

    Wayne A. Schneider Says:

No one is getting to me. There is no frustration. Trollstabbing is not just a moral imperative its how I amuse myself. You are an excellent poster. I love your stuff but you wont be telling me how to post. Not now, not ever. I watched the left take this kind of abuse from the right for a decade or more and ignore it and get characterized as weak because of it and have the nonsense become conventional wisdome. You handle things anyway you want for me its time to fight back. These morons come in here LOOKING to annoy us and pick a fight. I am going to be returning serve. As for how we are supposed to be that isnt up to you either. YOU can decide how YOU are. I will decide how I am. Taking a pummeling without fighting back just isnt my style

  68. drew3rd says:

I love Hillary, but isn’t there a way we can have her AND get rid of dufus? This guy is elbow deep in the housing mess and he is reprimanding the gop? He is not a person of substance on this issue, any issue, really. His legacy is secure, prom king president, Monica, Osama, housing bubble and impeached. What more is there to say abouit this boob?

  69. drew3rd says:

Schneider. Stabbing, fighting, returning serve? You sound like a chizophrenic Castro dweller. We have been fighting back. Don’t act like we are all a bunch of sissies. You are a frustrated punk who suffers from severe narcissism. There are plenty of us in the fight.

  70. Cats r Flyfishn says:

Great interview. Once again, former President Bill Clinton speaks to the American people in a friendly, understandable manner. George W Bush could never have answered these questions. They were too intellectual for Bush jr.

  71. Cats r Flyfishn says:

Whew… these last several comments have become quite hostile.

Of course, you have to remember that in McCain’s senile-addled brain, “sitting down” means bending over and grabbing your ankles.

  74. Deuce Coupe says:

Thank God for Obama, he makes Clinton look good, even makes Carter look good.

  75. drew3rd says:

You can’t be serious Deuce? Clinton couldn’t carry Obama’s jockstrap. Carter I’ll go along with.
