Jindal may reject recovery package money.

jindalnewt.jpgLouisiana faces a possible $2 billion budget shortfall next year, and the state is being hit hard by unemployment. Yet Gov. Bobby Jindal (R), rumored to be a future presidential candidate, said this weekend that he may turn down the roughly $3.8 billion for the state in the economy recovery package, which is expected to create 50,000 jobs:

We’ll have to review each program, each new dollar to make sure that we understand what are the conditions, what are the strings and see whether it’s beneficial for Louisiana to use those dollars,” Jindal said.

Jindal seems to be taking an even harder line than his colleagues, such as Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC), who both may accept stimulus money while opposing the stimulus legislation. Jindal is scheduled to give the official GOP response to President Obama’s address next Tuesday.

Fine, Dickhead. Don’t take the money.

In fact, I’d be very pleased to see all these “principled” GOOPs refuse the money! Time to put our money where your mouths are.

So the question is, who does Jindal serve by rejecting the money?

Himself. GOP — Party before country. Now you can add — career before constituents.

I hope other red state governors follow his example. If they can make things work in their states without the stimulus, they will be making a positive statement.

Since most red states lead the welfare lists, I think they will be in for a rude awakening. As will the whiners in their state.

Jindal shows us that the false principles of repugniscum will reject stimulus funds that may help their citizens because the party must come first: The repugniscum party of obstinancy and obstruction.
It’s easy to declare your so-called principles from your warm house, with your riches and your full belly.
I feel sorry for the citizens, but I hope they storm their capitols and tar and feather Jindal and others who may follow his lead.

  17. Marie says:

Obviously LTDan does not live in LA, where he may not have a job, or be losing his house.
Selfish, short-sighted partisanship of another repugniscum.

  18. Anacher Forester says:

Yep, this would have been a true test of Jindal’s mettle. Unfortunately, he’s painted himself into a corner. If he rejects StimPack cash, Jindal appeals to GOP hard-line fiscal conservative types. This will open him wide up to attacks from all sides re: governship of his state during a national economic crisis. If he accepts StimPack cash, Jindal looks like a flat-out pussy.

A more seasoned politico would have waited to get a better read on the lay of the land before spouting off. Once he was picked to respond to Obama’s address, Jindal just couldn’t keep his trap shut.

  19. slappy magoo says:

I really want Jindal to accept the money, as Louisiana desperately needs stimulus. But I can’t lie; Part of me would luuuuv to see how his state will react if he refuses the money. The more this debate rages on, the more I really start to understand how deep Republican Derangement Syndrome is. It reminds me of people who are high-ranking members of a cult, BUT who aren’t part of that cult’s inner circle that knows the cult is nothing but a scheme to score some tail, eff with people’s minds, take their money and demand tax-exempt status. The ones who believe their cult leader is the Messiah, and to leave the compound without his blessing is to invite death on the entire cult, so they must keep you there against your will, lest they all die. The idea that progressive plans might be good for the nation so messes with their concepts of right and wrong, they’d rather the country fail than succeed without tax cuts for the upper 1% in time of war. They’re willing to stand in the way of the fire exit because their Messiah once lectured them on how to stop a fire with your mind. It’s that deep. It’s that deranged. It’s today’s GOP: Contribute today!

  37. Mr. Evil says:

I used to live in Louisiana until about 2 1/2 years ago and Bobby “wonderboy” Jindal was supposed to be the new savior of the state. All the Louisiana legislature will do if he rejects the funds is try to raise local taxes in every way they can to compensate. That’s right, raise taxes on people that are unemployed, struggling and generally are just having a tough time surviving. Louisiana already has some of the highest sales taxes in the country. When I left Baton Rouge the sales tax in East Baton Rouge Parish was 9.5%. That’s just too damn high. I live in Lexington, KY now and the sales tax here is a paltry 6% in comparison. And Lexington is far and away a much better place to live.

So, you go ahead Bobby, don’t take the people’s money to help the people. We know how much more important it is for you to be just another rubber-stamp republican. And just like Wiley @ #8 said, lets see how you feel about federal money after you’re hit by another catastrophic hurricane.

Bobby Jindal; just another idiot, selfish republican that puts party before humanity.

  38. Wayne A. Schneider says:

I think LTdan knew that, he was just trying to make a lame joke.

    Very lame.

  39. SP Biloxi says:

Wow, turning down the economy package money? Did Jindal check in with the Louisiana citizens to ask for their approval and opinion since the money is going to the people of Louisiana? I think not. If Jindal is serious about turning down the money and not allow that money to rebuild Louisiana and help the taxpayers in that state, I look for Jindal along with Cao to be one term lawmakers. Turning down the economic recovery money by Jindal is most stupidest act to a state that is hurting and will cost him a future run for President.

  40. Jane E. Schneider says:

Mr. Evil, you’re much better off in Lexington. Nice town, but a little flat until you get outside to the horse farms.

  41. KayInMaine says:

  44. Jane E. Schneider says:

Mr. Evil, I used to insure harness horses for a living, and got to go visit some of the big farms out there. Beautiful!

  45. wizard2000 says:

Louisiana, like so many other states in our liberal democracy, is in desperate need of an infusion of capital, to keep afloat, to keep further job losses from happening in both our public and private sectors, in Louisiana and so many other cash-strapped states.

Federal money, capital, is now available.

Gov. Jindal (R-LA) is considering turning down this capital infusion, essentially adding insult to the injury Louisiana suffered during and after Hurricane Katrina.

    Is Jindal nuts?

Which made me think of the Bush/Republican legacy over the past eight torturous years and what a perfect title would be for any book detailing all that these conservatives have done to our nation.

    “The Bush Legacy: Capital Murder”

I think this possible title for a book detailing all the crimes of the Bush/Cheney years works on several levels, both involving torture and what they did to the economy: capital murder.

I don’t want to see anyone suffer for Republican grandstanding. Just looked at a few Louisiana newspapers. The fear is palpable. There is much talk about not having recovered from the last hurricane.

Am curious to see the response to Jindal’s idea of rejecting the money. There seems to be a feeling in LA that Jindal is a little too busy being a Republican star on a national level and not busy enough in LA.

If he refuses the money, and anyplace in Louisiana is flooded by the failure of levees that could have been repaired with money from the stimulus, then I think charges of criminal negligence will be in order.

  48. Mr. Evil says:

  50. tbone says:

From a purely political/strategic viewpoint, I would love to see this thing play out. The (R)s are definitely banking on the stimulus failing. The dark side of me (the “I told you so” side) wants to see Jindal reject the money, and have that decision destroy his career. People need to realize that their votes have real consequences. Vote for idiots, and you get idiot policies. What better way to illustrate that than not helping your state in an economic crisis? Only thing is, we don’t have the luxury to see what happens without people being miserable.

In boot camp, Forrest makes friends with a man named Benjamin Buford Blue or “Bubba” (Mykelti Williamson), who convinces Forrest to go into the shrimping business with him when war is over. Forrest excels in training and after finishing boot camp, Bubba and Forrest are assigned to the same platoon in Vietnam. As soon as they arrive with their new platoon, they meet their new platoon leader, Lieutenant Dan Taylor (Gary Sinise). Dan comes from a military family and has lost an ancestor in every American war. After a brief sequence showing Forrest writing letters to Jenny every night regardless of the varying weather conditions, Forrest’s platoon is ambushed while on patrol. Though Forrest rescues many of the men including Dan, whose legs were severely injured and are later amputated, Bubba is killed in action, dying in Forrest’s arms.
    .
    .
Jenny tells Forrest she is suffering from an unknown illness. Together the three move back to Greenbow, Alabama. Jenny and Forrest finally marry, with Dan arriving for the wedding (now able to walk with the use of prosthetic limbs) along with his fiancée, Susan. Dan says that his legs were made out of the same material as the space shuttle. Jenny dies soon afterward.

While I think states should have the right to refuse money (and I think it’d be very interesting drama if they did), I don’t think it should be withheld from them. That makes Obama out to be the multi-billion-dollar bully. “Voted against my bill? Well F*** YOOOOOUUUU, DUDE! Suck on poverty!” It’s the sort of thing that would rally Republicans even more – “Obama’s so partisan, he’s making whole districts or states suffer.” Bad move all around.

Oh, and while I wholly believe there are people out there who think as LtDan writes, anyone who takes LtDan seriously deserves the agita he’s giving you. He’s playing you like fiddles and you fall for it everytime. Take a step back, attack his points as points, because certainly people out there thinks as he does, and it’s constructive to see how the points can be debunked, for those who dont argue as well. But don’t delude yourself into thinking he feels like he has a horse in this race.

    THE ENEMY WITHIN IS SELF-DESTRUCTING

Republicans are practicing seditious DEMAGOGUERY and insurrectionary OBSTRUCTIONISM intended to destabilize our economy for purposes of political exploitation.

Republicans AREN’T making a sincere effort to STOP the bleeding THEIR incompetent leadership and failed policies created. Instead, they’re using conflicting economic theories as a smokescreen to conceal their subversive agenda, which is to cause President Obama and America to fail so they can blame Democrats for the consequences of THEIR calamitous mismanagement.

Republicans are preposterously professing that THEIR disgraceful political WHORING had nothing to do with the banking, real estate, stock market and employment catastrophes that resulted.

Republicans are trying to hamstring Democrats to prevent them from undoing the damage caused by a Republican presidency.

Republicans are offering controversial arguments they know no one can agree on to disrupt and prevent progressive change. They’d rather divide America and create political gridlock than endure the political consequences of effective Democratic governance. That’s how they gained power and that’s how they’re trying to retain it.

Republicans are not the LOYAL OPPOSITION. They are the ENEMY WITHIN whose personal priorities have eroded their moral and ethical standards to the point that treachery and betrayal are their preferred methods of operation.

It’s one thing to advocate their conservative beliefs; it’s another thing entirely to willfully sabotage America’s government because a successful Democratic presidency would not be vulnerable to the fears and hatreds that have produced and sustained the radical Republican corporatism and extremism that have poisoned and crippled America.

  73. barfly says:

If he’s taking advice from Newt, the next phase is already clear: whine loud and long until it’s actually time to take the money, and then have a big press conference, and announce that although it greatly offends his conservative sensibilities, he would not be serving his state’s citizens were he to reject the money, while other surrounding states are taking it. And so to remain competitive with the other states, he has no choice but to accept the funds. That throws a meaty bone to his base, while not appearing to be too hypocritical to the state’s voters.

As a current resident of Booby’s state, I can tell you there are some who’d be happy to cut off their noses to spite their faces if it helps the GOP. And the isms over here, namely racism and Christofascism, is palpable. But I digress..

My point is that I’m happy to learn of Bobby’s comment. Now, when he takes the money, and he will, that will be akin to admitting that a) he’s reviewed the terms and find them acceptable, and b) the money will help LA. Now, how’s he going to explain away the GOP’s main talking point against the package, that it won’t help, if he reviews the terms and then accepts the money? His big mouth has set a nice trap for himself.

But to those with half-a-brain, his statement sounds like he’s really thinking about refusing the money. But the halfbrains will be disappointed, because he’ll cave within the week.

    ____________

Are you referring to the pre-exorcism Jindal… or the post-exorcism Bobby?

At least we didn’t derail the thread (not like Saturday’s ‘Newt’ party thread!)

Ooooo… and now Miss “Can I have a hit too?” gets all proper on us…

Marie, I would never live anywhere in california! I don’t even consider that part of the USA anymore.
    February 17th, 2009 at 7:56 pm

I was going to ask “how stupid are you?” but I don’t want to be here all night.

  95. telestai2 says:

    LTdan Says:

Marie, I would never live anywhere in california! I don’t even consider that part of the USA anymore.

That’s good, because we Californians don’t consider you part of the human race any more.

  96. telestai2 says:

    Olby Sucks Says:

Jindal is a man of great integrity.

Obviously, you have a really weird definition of “integrity.” From here, his stance looks a lot like cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face.

  97. ScaryBrownHusseinChick (ThinkOutsideTheBush) says:

A year ago, Jindal would have been too brown for the Republicans to have embraced as their next hero.

  98. telestai2 says:

    Thinking Southerner Says:

His big mouth has set a nice trap for himself.

When I lived in Texas, we said it thus: “He let his mouth overload his a**.”

  99. Clumberfeet says:

We’ll have to review each program, each new dollar….
    ….and then take the money.

  100. DallasNE says:

Jindal is just playing to the base here. He will end up quietly taking the money. All 50 Governor’s will. Some, like Arnold, will lay off the people and take the money, the shameless lot they are.

  101. Cats r Flyfishn says:

    wizard…

    “The Bush Legacy: Capital Murder”

I think this possible title for a book detailing all the crimes of the Bush/Cheney years works on several levels, both involving torture and what they did to the economy: capital murder.

You can add economic treason to the title: “The Bush Legacy: Capital Murder and Economic Treason”.

  102. Dabb says:

I live in Louisiana. Not accepting stimulus money would be be a great disappointment to me and this state. In fact it’s scary that Jindal would even think the thought. Of course he didn’t think it….Newt thought it for him. I have a feeling Jindal will be in political trouble if he turns down this money and more and more people begin losing their jobs.

It seems more and more Republicans are becoming political puppets. Can they not think for themselves? Can they not assess the situation and make a decision based on the situation and consequences? Or do they need a hasbeen wannabe like Newt and Limbaugh to make all their decisions for them? And since when has good decision making become making the decision before the plan is put forth? How can Cantor turn his nose up at plans he knows nothing about? How can Jindal say he may not take the money until he knows what the money will do to help his state? This is all getting absurb and very childish….and so dangerous.

  103. continuum says:

Maybe we can convince the other GOP know nothings to follow Jindal’s example. I am tired of saving the neocon conservatives’ rear ends’ while they kick us in the face. Let these jerks and their ignorant constituents fail. Why send my tax dollars to support those conservative neocon jerks. Their states are already on their way to becoming 3rd world countries. I have no desire to reward their screwups.

  104. politicscorner says:

This is just political posturing. Jindal is just trying to “show” everyone his political philosophy. He would be a fool if he does not accept the aid and could be political suicide.

  105. christopher wiwi says:

Jindal will give his political career a much needed kick in the groin, he will be doing nothing for his state just like Brownie and the Boy Emporer did after Katrina hit.

  106. drew3rd says:

Now THAT’S leadership. If we could find a few on our side to tell Pelosi, Reid and the remaining band of idiots that they are spending us further into oblivion than that idiot, The Shrub, ever did. If we continue down this path, Democrats are going to get killed in 2010. We cannot continue the spend, spend , spend of the Shrub years. It is desrtoying our country.

  107. MapleStreet says:

One one hand, I hate that the people of Louisiana will suffer for the stupidity of their elected official.

OTOH – Please! Please! Not taking the money while your state sinks into the abyss will show you to be a true patriot in your next election cycle.

  108. MrBrown says:

“The Exorcist” obviously is thinking along the lines of his GOP brethren. Constantly thinking of future elections, rather than the will of his constituants.
The people need that money no matter what his conservative beliefs tell him. New Orleans is still in shambles years later after Katrina, and thats a “shovel ready” project if I’ve ever seen one.

  109. Alejandro says:

    Jindal is right.

    It’s all about the STRINGS.

    It’s called federalization.

  110. QXXIX says:

Jindal is scheduled to give the official GOP response to President Obama’s address next Tuesday.

Next Tuesday is Mardi Gras day.
Is he hoping many Louisianians may be distracted that day?

  111. BalRog says:

Somebody please correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t SOURCES OF REVENUE the purview of the Louisiana LEGISLATURE, not the Governor?

Seriously, if I’m wrong, please correct me. But if I’m not, then Jindal is just blowing smoke. It’s none of his dad-blamed bidness how the legislature funds things.

I suppose he could veto any funding bill that included accepting stimulus money, but, really, what are the chances that the state leg would not override *THAT* one in a Big Easy minute.

  112. JohnnyRussia says:

The GOP Confederacy loves Jindal. Not only is he as capable of stupid political stunts as party elders, but the party’s racially-ignorant hierarchy also thinks Jindal matches up well against President Obama in 2012 because they think he’s black.

Moi? Getting proper? (Ralph Wiggum) “That’s unpossible!” I enjoyed Saturday’s party immensely, it’s been a long time since a bunch of us got together and had a party here. But I do get a twinge of guilt ’cause I’m sure that TP doesn’t enjoy our parties as much as we do. Just a twinge, I was raised by nuns, after all. ;)

I say let’s do it again soon – but let’s have something other than pizza rolls, they didn’t last long.

  114. Marshabar says:

Bobby Jindal doesn’t want to stick his hand in the Obama cuff. Can’t say I blame him. That inept, inexperienced, arrogant, angry, antipathetic dead beat of a president hasn’t proven to be a very trustworthy guy so far.

Took a bunch of payoff from Raines at Fannie Mae while they were selling garbage on Wall Street.

Hasn’t paid his Chicago extravaganza bill. Apparently they are still looking over the items. Right! Dead beat language for the check’s in the mail, sucker.

By the way, I’m just curious, are there any normal people in New Orleans?
