Holder: America is a ‘nation of cowards’ on racial matters.

holdera.jpg Today, Attorney General Eric Holder spoke at the Justice Department in honor of Black History Month. As the first African-American leading the DOJ, he called for a national dialogue on race — something the United States has generally avoided:

Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic melting pot, in things racial, we have always been, and we, I believe, continue to be, in two many ways, a nation of cowards. Though race related issues continue to occupy a significant portion of our political discussion, and though there remain many unresolved racial issue in this nation, we, average Americans, simply do not talk enough with each other about things racial. [...]

And we, in this room, bear a special responsibility. Through its work and through its example, the Department of Justice — this Department of Justice — as long as I’m here, must and will leave the nation to the new birth of freedom so long ago promised by our greatest president. This is our duty, this is our solemn responsibility.

Holder’s remarks are a refreshing break from the Bush administration, during which Justice Department officials allowed conservative political interests to trump civil rights concerns. Watch Holder’s speech here.

Update Jonah Goldberg says that he finds Holder's comments "both hackneyed and reprehensible."

Be afraid, skinheads. He’s got you in his crosshairs, and the resources of the Justice Department to back his play.

Has anyone noticed how Japan, Europe and Germany deal with their race issues? We do a nice job here of trying to eradicate all racism and we have become a very equitable country.

Yeah — repuglicans certainly aren’t cowards; why, they step right up and spew their racism openly all the time!

  7. tombaker says:

  8. StratRat says:

Well since the GOP is almost 100% made up of bigots and unAmerican racists, it is clear Holder is correct – at least for the 30 something percent still clinging to Bush and his failed policies. When the dialog is driven by 18th century thinking, there is not much hope for progress. The right side likes their little view of the world to remain unchanged. They feel safe in their worldview. Actually, they all appear terrified of any change which would force them to adjust to a new direction. Their success lies in never having to admit that they were wrong.

  9. drew3rd says:

Did I miss something, or did we just elect a black president? The first black man to be a serious contender for his party’s nomination? Where does this racism come from? The idea that America is segregated at this late date is absurd. He needs a reality check.

  10. raynman says:

When you have a major political party actually openly using “Barack the Magic Negro”, then, yes, I think that race is still an issue.

You’re absolutely right. The fact that America is still segregated and that racial inequality still exists more than 150 years after the abolition of slavery is indeed absurd. But it’s unfortunately true.

What’s even more absurd are the deniers like yourself who believe that racism ended in this country on November 4th.

Racism in America? It is very much alive and very easy to see.

Strong racial disparities still exist in schools, neighborhoods, corporate board rooms, prisons, foreclosed houses, formerly black neighborhoods of New Orleans, that sort of thing. You can shut your eyes and pretend that it deosn’t exist, but segregation is alive and well in 2009. It’s just very subtle.

  39. tombaker says:

Drew – you do mean the same France that welcomed black artists from the States dating back to the ’20’s, extending thought to the 60’s and 70’s, and provided a safe haven and loads of income to people who were not welcome here, don’t you?

If you do, then maybe you’ll explain how and when they veered so sharply to the right, ’cause I missed it.

  40. drew3rd says:

Folks, thwere is no segregation in America apart from self segregation. Not because of race, but because of class. White people don’t live in North Philly because it is racist. They don’t live there because it is dangerous and lacks opportunity for their children. Black neighbors are not a defining characteristic. You want to scream segregation, then you need to ask black people why they congregate around and accept the lack of opportunities in North Philly, not the other way around.

We’re not pretending it’s “Selma back in the day.” You’re the only idiot advancing that strawman idea. We don’t deny that the movements of the 60s made considerable progress in racial equality in this country. I also agree that other countries have FAR worse ethnic and racial tensions. France is a good example. So is China. So is India. So is Guatemala. Fair enough.

But “better than China at race relations” isn’t a very good metric. We know we can do much better than that. I salute AG Holder for acknowledging this so publicly.

Fu(k you clown ; waving your little Chinese-made American flag while adorning the same in pin form to attach to your lapel doesn’t make you arbiter of who is patriotic or loyal to the US.

That’s the same nonsense the Chimpy administration insisted on pushing , and which the GOP still tries to use ; you’re either “with us or against us”.

If you want to stumble through life blindly while sporting rose-colored glasses , that’s your perogative ; it is those like yourself that have been pre-eminently responsible for the decay and falling in standing of this country , while you desperately search for scape-goats or others to pin it upon.

Instead of viewing the situation for what it truly is and try to work out a reasonable solution for it , you deny and deny it some more , and when finally confronted with it personally , your only interest is to try to lay it at the feet of those who are completely blameless.

You are cowards of the most despicable sort , and a GOD-DAMN disgrace……..Get out of MY COUNTRY

“I haven’t read the whole speech, but I’m going to sit in judgment on it, anyway.”

First, I think this is nonsense as we talk about race a great, great, great deal in this country. Endless courses in colleges and universities, chapters in high school textbooks, movies, documentaries, after-school-specials and so on are devoted to discussing race. We even have something called “Black History Month” — the occasion for Holder’s remarks to begin with — when America is supposed to spend a month talking about the black experience.

Hey, Pantload, a few academic courses on race does not mean “we talk about race a great, great, great deal.” Not even close.

    _________

    Who said it was “okay?”

Recognizing that different cultures handle racial issues differently is not an endorsement. It’s simply a recognition of the fact that you can’t compare apples and orangutans. Racism in Japan (which, allow me to state for the record, is a bad thing) must be looked at from a Japanese perspective in order to be fully understood. Racism in France (which, allow me to also state for the record, is a bad thing) must be looked at from a French perspective in order to be fully understood. Same thing with racism in China and India (which I’ve witnessed personally during my travels, and which I’m also stating for the record to be a bad thing).

America has done pretty well with race over the last 50 years. We’ve made great strides in equality, and we can be proud of that fact. But that doesn’t mean we’re finished. It doesn’t mean racism is over, just because we’re not as bad as China. It doesn’t mean we don’t have room for improvement.

The fact that you’re here denying the fact that racial disparity exists in this country is proof positive that we have a long ways to go, and is exactly what Holder was referring to. Thank you for proving him right.

I, for one, know damn well that there is still considerable prejudice in this country, which is itself racism. I know because I have to fight it whenever it raises its ugly head in ME. I am not afraid to admit that. Rather, I am proud that I can and that I try to overcome it. That is true patriotism.

Racism is epidemic in America, we are only beginning to see its depths. The election of a non-white President is flushing all the race haters out of the woodwork.

    ________

Ohhh, so racial and ethnic disparities are just a product of Eric Holder’s imagination, right? He’s just making it up, isn’t it?

Perhaps you should mention this to the Census Bureau, cause they were apparently also victims of an overactive imagination in their Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States report:

Real median household income of white households rose 1.1 percent between 2005 and 2006 (from $50,100 to $50,700), the first real increase in annual household income for this group since 1999. Asian households had the highest median income at $64,200, followed by non-Hispanic white ($52,400), Hispanic ($37,800) and black ($32,000) households. Income levels remained statistically unchanged between 2005 and 2006 for each of these groups.

In 2006, women earned 77 cents for each dollar earned by men, statistically unchanged from 2005. Real median earnings of both men and women who worked full time, year-round declined between 2005 and 2006. The median earnings for men fell 1.1 percent to $42,300; for women, the corresponding numbers were 1.2 percent and $32,500. (The apparent difference between the decline in the earnings of men and women was not statistically significant.)

For Hispanics, 20.6 percent were in poverty in 2006, down from 21.8 percent in 2005. Poverty rates remained statistically unchanged for non-Hispanic whites (8.2 percent), blacks (24.3 percent) and Asians (10.3 percent) in 2006.

The number of uninsured, as well as the rate without health insurance, remained statistically unchanged in 2006 for non-Hispanic whites (at 21.2 million or 10.8 percent). For blacks, the number and percentage increased, from 7 million in 2005 to 7.6 million and from 19 percent in 2005 to 20.5 percent. The number of uninsured Asians remained statistically unchanged, at 2 million in 2006, while their uninsured rate declined to 15.5 percent in 2006, from 17.2 percent in 2005. The number and percentage of uninsured Hispanics increased from 14 million (32.3 percent) in 2005 to 15.3 million (34.1 percent).

So about that “equitable nation” with “opportunity for everyone…”

Folks, thwere is no segregation in America apart from self segregation. Not because of race, but because of class. White people don’t live in North Philly because it is racist. They don’t live there because it is dangerous and lacks opportunity for their children. Black neighbors are not a defining characteristic. You want to scream segregation, then you need to ask black people why they congregate around and accept the lack of opportunities in North Philly, not the other way around.

Dude, let me give a little anecdote about segregation. A former white classmate from LA said this to me. I paraphrase,

“In the south we don’t care how close African Americans get as long as they don’t get uppity” In the North you don’t care how uppity they get as long as they don’t get close.”

You might pick up a book called “Sundown Towns” by Loewen and read it.

Pointing to a problem is not “baiting”. If it was, wouldn’t it be fair to say that your are “baiting” in this screed. Or are you just masterbating?

America is not cowardly, it is not racist and it deserves the defense of reasonable people.
There are cowardly and racist people in this country. Reasonable people acknowledge that and demand equality, not platitudes and pollyanish pronouncements.

Boy is that ever right. We do not discuss race as individuals or as a society. We are afraid. And there is the possible anger that comes from discussing. We never will either. No one wants to face racism. And it is not simply white racism. There is black racism too.

In a country where civilized discourse is now dead, and the savage talk is now the norm, I don’t look for it to change anytime soon. We are cowards.

  245. drew3rd says:

Sorry WayneBro, I don’t want you confused litle fella. I LOVE AMERICA.

  246. belac says:

Wait- drew3rd… I’d still love to get your opinion of ‘anecdotal’ evidence and it’s place in this discussion…

  247. tombaker says:

who doesn’t, Drew. other than the strawmen in your basement?

  248. McWars says:

The Latinos could upset the balance of tings as there is a pride problem among the people here in Texas.

Obsessive talk of a race war falls under the category of racism, drewy. You quickly canceled your claim that no bigotry exists in Texas, an argument you based on supposedly never witnessing such bigotry in person.

And FLORIDA!? Don’t get me started on that dump of sex offenders.

Kidding yourself and being in absolute denial doesn’t further your argument , just in case you were wondering ……….As well as your constant mentioning of your (phony) patriotism

I just quoted off of the speech’s transcript, DB. No mention of a war on poverty or drugs, but he speaks plainly of a war on terrorism.

Funny how TP left out the part about the war against terrorism when they cherry-picked Holder’s quotes.

    February 18th, 2009 at 6:08 pm

See any quote(s) by Holder that torture is legal and acceptable ?

Neither do I ; then why did you always excuse-make for Chimpy and CO’s illegal behavior ?

  259. Mouth of the South says:

I am over 50, and I grew up in the South. I always lived in multi-cultural neighborhoods – always. As a child, I had Asian Neighbors, Hispanic Neighbors and Black Neighbors. All the kids played and did everything together. It wasn’t until adults tried to tell us that we shouldn’t get along did we have any problems and I don’t mean our parents. We could walk to a local park and there were enough of us that we had our own baseball team. When we tried to join a park commission league, we were not allowed because we had ‘coloreds’ on our team. Because public schools were still segregated, we couldn’t go to the same school. It was so stupid and we kids vowed that things wouldn’t be that way when we grew up. I think that we’ve come a long way but we still have a ways to go. But for the AG to completely and totally ignore the progress that has been made, I think his comments are the insulting and insensitive ones.

Backup is right to point out how diverse we are. If you’re okay with a race baiter running the DoJ, I think you are a small, mean, person. Whatever trauma affected you as a child needs to be excorcised and got on with. America is not cowardly, it is not racist and it deserves the defense of reasonable people. Screaming, bogeyman, doesn’t make you hip or cool, it makes you marginal. Scream racism, soon no one will know what the word means when it actually shows up.

Either you’re in deep denial or you really haven’t been paying attention. And calling Holder a “race baiter” doesn’t make him one.

  263. Nevar says:

Drew – if you feel this passionately about Mr. Holder’s remarks, why don’t you and your pals here get together, and get a rope, and head on down to D.C……

Seems like the only logical conclusion to the tangent you’re on. Be courageous – cut to the chase – fight for your deeply-felt love of country and boundless self-righteousness.

You’ll show that bad, old race-baiter who’s boss, wontcha??

  273. drew3rd says:

Well if you’ve spent as much time as you claim, you would know that there aren’t toilets or sewer systems that can handle toilet paper South of our border. In Costa Rica, there are only flushing toilets where the tiourists stay and you certainly don’t drink from the tap. People live in cardboard and tin shelters and subsist on very little. 277. gummitch says:

    drew3rd Says:

Rat and Mac need to look at that again. The coasts and the north are failing. The middle of the country is humming along just fine. Doesn’t change the fact that the only racism I’ve witnessed in my life was in Philly, not Texas or Florida.

So the only “racism” drew has ever witnessed was when a labor union was top-heavy with Blacks. The only “racism” drew has ever acknowledged is black-on-white. If this isn’t a perfect example of blindness to reality, I don’t know what is.

  278. WAYNEBRO says:

That sounds like an issue for your travel agent.

  279. Nevar says:

I offered a simple observation, waynebro. From my personal observations. It is not a racist comment, no more than Eric Holder saying that America is a nation of cowards with regards to race.
An objective observation is necessary to recognize social imbalances. And hopefully heal from them.

  280. drew3rd says:

I’m sorry, Gummitch, was Holder speaking of the strain between Taiwan and China. who do YOU think he was speaking about? Russians and Jews? Go home, your gonna get hurt here.

Okay, if we agree to your premise will you then confront the racism in America, greatest country in the world?
’cause that’s all Holder is asking us to do here…

    You still won’t?!?!

    Coward…

  286. drew3rd says:

Sorry Dbad, I thought I was converisng with people who could follow basic principles. Maybe you should take a break. Not being able to follow puts you at a major disadvantage when discussing important issues like a race baiting head of the DoJ.

All I understand so far is that he has a raw nerve somewhere regarding race relations. Don’t even know where he’s coming from, indicating fear of something…

  292. doctorfixit says:

I agree with Holder. For far too long, blacks and Mexicans have been cowardly, refusing to acknowledge their own racism, refusing to acknowledge that European-Americans ended slavery before any other modern country, and European-Americans have built the most tolerant, most generous, most inclusive society in human history. Instead of expressing gratitude, they retreat to the cowardice of their own racist bigotry. As part of Black History Month, let’s examine the cold-blooded regimes of today’s Africa, where Europeans are hunted down and their property stolen, where cannibalism, rape and slavery are still used as instruments of government oppression. Let’s look at the outrageous levels of crime that blacks commit against european-americans. Let’s look at the un-COnstitutional preferential treatment programs that permeate American society and that have apparently done nothing to improve the lot of blacks. European-Americans hsould be indebted to Eric Holder for his statements, because they illustrate the futility of an appeasement approach to the race-baiting liberal fascists of the Democrat party. It is clear that Obama is wasting no time in promoting race war and anti-European genocide as part of his illegitimate regime.

  294. drew3rd says:

belac, there is no racism in America. There are some racists, but the idea that America, as in the American people, need to confront racism is preposterous for the head of the DoJ. First of all, it isn’t illegal. If there were racism, The DoJ would have nothing to do with it. Good people would have to shout it down. Something that has been done and is being done today. That’s why racism in America is all but eradicated.

I am part indian and I looked it when I was younger. Now people think I look Italian, go figure. My grandparents are the great ones. they left the res and refused to live off of thwe tribal money. they started farming and did quite well. My parents were entrepreneurs and taught us Martin Luther King’s Dream speech when I was young. My family broke out. That’s the important thing. People who live on the res are the same as crack addicts. the difference is a tribal check versus crack.

  323. doctorfixit says:

So you , a white individual , have a more accurate and reasonable assessment of race relations as far as black-white integration and racial matters are concerned , than an educated black man ?

Here we have the time-worn liberal fascist argument: only a black person can talk about (white) racism. And this “well-educated” moron Holder womders why no one will talk to him about race?

And to answer the question, as a european-american, yes, I have a more accurate and reasonable assessment, because my brain is not addled with hate, as all liberal fascist brains are.

  324. tombaker says:

that’s the biggest batch of nonsense bs of the day mr. fixitperson.

$50 to MoveOn in honor of your hysteria!!!

    Congratulations, and cheers, special friend!!!

  325. Khamron says:

Do you think a white man killing a black man by dragging him behind a truck is racism?</em

The act of one person killing another is not automatically racism unless their is evidence to prove that racism was the motivation for the killing. For example, if a 500 lb JDAM is dropped on two Al Queda members in Afghanistan, does it automatically make it racism if the pilot was white? What if the pilot is black? What if it was a Predator drone and it was a hellfire missle fired from Texas via remote control?

You see racism is not always the underlying cause of murder. Despite attempts to make it so. If there is credible evidence that it was racism, then in Texas and Oklahoma, we have taken positive steps to shorten the time that maggots sit on death row. ‘Hate Crimes’ is a ridiculous classification. If you kill someone here, then you get the needle. Simple as that.

  326. drew3rd says:

Random, have you come to run and duck again? I can see by your post that you are a psychologist. I’m not, but I can tell you are a coward. Now befiore you get mad, you need to explain your position on Holder’s cowardly Americans comment.

And to answer the question, as a european-american, yes, I have a more accurate and reasonable assessment, because my brain is not addled with hate, as all liberal fascist brains are.

He shoots the man and woman and kills them both. Is that any LESS heinous than a person getting killed because they are gay?

If a person ties a chain around a man and drags him for several miles resulting in his death, what makes the individuals race so important? Obviously, it was NOT a crime of passion because tying a chain to a truck and then around a person kind of takes time.

Use your head my man… don’t listen to your emotions.

This is our duty, this is our solemn responsibility.

This is good news. Holder is basically stating we must talk about the past and present to move towards a better future.

  391. Wang111 says:

Holder and Obama: a couple of cowards on racial matters.

Holder and Obama are a disgrace to black people.

Is Obama going to financially reward black Katrina victims for having been racially discriminated against by Bush?

    Where is the money?

I don’t think Obama would have any problem, hypothetically, with slavery happening all over again.

Maybe one remembers that Kanye West said, “Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

We have uncovered something far more horrifying.

It is practically like Obama “doesn’t care about black people.” (And Obama is black.)

There are all sorts of personalities.

There actually are screwed up black people who secretly don’t like their own kind.

There may even be black lunatics or freaks who would fancy themselves prancing around wearing a KKK outfit or uniform with the swastika on it.

Maybe Obama even fantasizes about hanging black people by nooses.

    I like black people.

    Black people are cool!

    Black people are great.

But now, white people don’t have to worry about Obama interfering with racial discrimination inflicted by white people against racial minorities while Obama is president of the United States.

It is practically just as bad as if the white supremacist at heart, George W. Bush, is still running the country.

For example, Bush murdered a black woman—Margie Schoedinger.

“One of those very least were George Bush’s personal complicity in the death (murder to be precise) of my friend Margie Schoedinger in September of 2003. Determining the exact whereabouts and contacts of [then] president-elect George Bush on September 21 thru 22, 2003, should be entirely lacking in difficulty” (Leola McConnell (Nevada Progressive Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate in 2010). Retrieved November 29, 2008, from http://leolaforussenate.blogspot.com/2008/02/leola-mcconnell-for-us-senate.html).

Obama should have the guts to assemble workers from the FBI and/or one or more state attorney general offices and say something similar to the following:

“I, Obama, am the most powerful person in America now. Bush is no longer the president and thus no longer the most powerful person in America. I, Obama, am in control now. I, Obama, demand that the ultimate law-enforcement workers in this country investigate Bush and then proceed to have him locked away for life or executed for murdering the black woman—Margie Schoedinger. I, Obama, am black, and I find Bush’s murder of Margie Schoedinger to be personally offensive. I, Obama, feel it is once again like the time of slavery when white people killed black people with no sheriff, prosecutor, or court to stop it from happening or prosecute it. I, Obama, am not going to go around in the modern-day democracy feeling like a black slave of white people—especially while I am the president of the United States. I, Obama, want Bush brought down for murdering a black woman. I, Obama, want Bush brought down for racially discriminating against black people pursuant to Hurricane Katrina. I, Obama, am going to supply financial rewards to the black people who were harmed by Bush’s racial discrimination and who are still alive. I, Obama, am taken aback by Bush having been so evil in wrongfully causing the deaths of so many black people pursuant to his racist response relative to Hurricane Katrina. I, Obama, am going to take advantage of my time as a racial-minority president and not allow “Bush’s KKK-Neo-Nazi mentality” to rule over and oppress black people in America.”

Obama is not doing anything about Bush’s murder of Margie Schoedinger.

Obama has not given a penny to any black victims of Bush’s racial discrimination.

Obama needs to say: “I can change and act like a black person instead of disgracing myself all over the place!”

Obama needs to say: “Change—Yes I can!”

It is amazing that Mr. Holder challenges Americans to talk more about race by calling them “cowards”. Why not really stimulate the discussion by calling them “honkies” or “crackers”? Right, let’s encourage civil discourse by starting with name calling. You don’t start building bridges with this kind of discourse, you continue to burn them. If there is a failure to adequately discuss race in this country, it is not borne of cowardice, but disgust.

Holder is right. The liberal fascists refuse to confront their own anti-european racism. They use racist terms like “white”, they stereotype all european-americans. Of course every european-american knows about racism – their own government hates them because of the color of their skin. A fringe minority of commu-nazi liberal bigots runs the country, and using their Hitler-style tactics in the media they run a relentless racist anti-european hate campaign. Liberalism is a hate crime we can no longer afford to tolerate. The only way we will ever wipe out racism in this country is to exterminate liberal fascism. The haters must go!

HERE’S A SYNOPSIS OF THE SO-CALLED PROGESS AMERICA HAS MADE TOWARD ELIMINITAING RACISM :

    A) Modern Slavery 1442 Ghana (aka The Gold Coast )
to the Present (Media-Suppresed ) Slave Trade In Sudan

    B) 1884 – 1885 : Fourteen European Nations , Turkey & America got together in Berlin , Germany (called The Berlin Conference). Here they divided up among themselves the riches of Black Africa ( Daniel 11:14).

    * NAACP Lynchings Records / Tuskegee Institute Lynching Records
From the 1880s to 1940s : 4,700 + Black Africans were reported Lynched.
Sometimes crowds of 10,000 would gather to watch THE SHOW.
    - (See “100 Years Of Lynching ” By Ralph Ginzburg

    * The CONVICT LEASE SYSTEM – forced Blacks back into slavery by imprisoning them for refusing to work for some white man who were cheating them out of their wages
    (Daniel 11:14) . .

    C) March , 1957 – Ghana , West Africa became the 1st Black African Nation to declare its independence from the U.K. .
Kwame Nkrumah was their 1st President. Within a few years he was overthrown.
    * This was followed by a host of other Black African countries declaring their independence. And being overthrown.
The Congo via Patrice Lumumba was overthrown by U.S. CIA backing (trouble-makers of the World).
    * On the surface it looked like Black Africans were in charge, but who had control of the natural resources of the country (Daniel 11:14). DeBeers via Cecil Rhodes for one.

    D) The phony CIVIL RIGHTS era : used a lot of well-meaning people (who sincerely wanted peace ) for public viewing , while America found some new NI**ERS to kill (In Asia). Using their Old Black African NI**ERS To Do The Job for The Bush Dynasty started by Prescott Bush and company.

    F) RACE, RELIGION, AND RACISM – A lecture series by Apostle Dr. Frederick K.C. Price Jr. went in-depth for 76 Weeks ; pulling up the roots of Racism in American Society & The Church .
    * During this Lecture Series, many Americans showed there true colors no matter what so-called race they were.

    * 1990s – Besides infesting our Black Communities with Crack, America made a law for crack & a law for power cocaine. And they added the 3 strikes Life sentence . All designed to lock up more Black Africans. {The New Form Of Slavery )
