NY Post cartoonist under fire for portraying stimulus author as a dead chimp.

Today, the NY Post published a cartoon by Sean Delonas showing two police officers shooting a chimpanzee, in a reference to the recent incident in Connecticut where a pet chimp attacked a woman. In this cartoon, however, one of the policemen says, “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill”:

02182009.gif

In a statement, the Rev. Al Sharpton questions the racism that appears to be in Delonas’s cartoon:

The cartoon in today’s New York Post is troubling at best given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous with monkeys. One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less than casual reference to this when in the cartoon they have police saying after shooting a chimpanzee that “Now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill.”

Being that the stimulus bill has been the first legislative victory of President Barack Obama (the first African American president) and has become synonymous with him it is not a reach to wonder are they inferring that a monkey wrote the last bill?

Update The NY Post editor-in-chief Col Allan responds:

The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist.
Update The New York Times reports on the reaction by Gov. David Paterson (D-NY):
“It would be very important for The New York Post to explain what the cartoon was intended to portray,” Mr. Paterson said in response to a question about whether the cartoon’s depiction of a monkey was racist, as Mr. Sharpton has suggested. “Obviously those types of associations have been made. They do feed a kind of negative and stereotypical way that people think. But I think if it’s enough that people are raising this issue, I hope they would clarify.”
Many NY Post staff members were also reportedly dismayed by the cartoon, and the paper's phone lines were ringing non-stop.

I think this joke has more to do with the infinite number of monkeys typing at random producing Hamlet than it does with President Obama, I don’t buy the racism.

  7. margerine says:

The implication to me is more that it’s so stupid that an actual monkey must have wrote it. You’d think the people involved with have considered the race connotations people would come up with, but it really doesn’t seem like an intentionally racist thing.

  11. fergus says:

Hey, it was just a joke. Just like “Barak the Magic Negro” was a joke. Just like “Back in the Saddle” was a joke. Republican humor should be the subject of a whole college course in abnormal psychology.

  12. The Dogfather says:

Just another example of the stupidity of the Murdoch empire. Even if it’s not intentionally racist, some editor at the Post should have caught the possibility that it would be perceived as racist, given the connotation that the word “monkey” has assumed over the years (after all, it’s the very use of that word on a Monday Night Football broadcast, when referring to an African-American player, that got Howard Cosell in trouble many years ago).

And if it’s not racist, it’s certainly gratuitously violent, particularly given that it tries to make light of the fact that someone’s pet chimp attacked and nearly killed a woman who’s now in critical condition.

As I said, typical of the Murdoch empire…

  13. katy says:

Yeah, it ranks right up there on the tasteless scale, considering the incident but racist? Just how many jokes and cartoons are there out there about Bushes ‘primacy’?

  16. Alejandro says:

Rev. Al, you’re going out on a limb on this one. Who wrote the bill? As ridiculous as the bill is, chimps might as well have written it. That was the point of the cartoon.

And, Obama did not write the bill.

  17. misshusseinmolly says:

This cartoon is disturbing to me on so many other levels, that the possible racism angle didn’t even occur to me.

First — why turn an extremely sad incident in Connecticut into political fodder? There’s really no connection between a pet chimpanzee attacking a woman for no obvious reason and the stimulus bill? In one of the situations, police had to shoot and kill an animal to protect human life. There is no comparable aspect of the stimulus bill.

Second — The cartoon doesn’t make it clear WHY these police officers just gunned down an ape. Is there some point I’m missing? Who are the police supposed to represent? Republican lawmakers? Republicans in general? The American people in general?

Third — What’s the ape’s connection to the stimulus bill? Are they implying it was written by a chimpanzee (who needed to be shot for some reason)? Or perhaps the cartoon was depicting the REAL Connecticut incident and suggesting that the chimp who was killed was — among his many other accomplishments — responsible for writing the stimulus bill?

This is just a bad cartoon all the way around — racist intentions or not.

  18. Buckie Boy says:

Of course it was racist, that is obvious…

…Conservatives don’t understand that they are racists, they think it is funny…

…they are sick in the head, and don’t have the capacity to understand why people think they are racists…

…they will never get it, it is not in their mindset.

  19. drew3rd says:

That’s ridiculous. This mess lies at the feet of Pelosi and Reid. I wish Obama had crafted this thing, it might have had more fiscal responsibility involved in it. Instead it is a tax cut and spend nightmare that is reasonably portrayed as being crafted by a maniacal chimpanzee. The chimp could be said to have attacked Wall Street after the reception it received yesterday.

  20. avchavis says:

This was rascist and very stupid. Delonas should know better than to use a monkey when referring to the stimulus bill just signed into law by an African American President. Rascists have been trying to depict African Americans as monkeys for decades. It’s not a new or orignal concept – just another sick joke. Not funny or smart! SHAME ON YOU DELONAS, SHAME ON THE NY POST FOR PUBLISHING THIS RASCIST CARTOON!

  21. jkilvik says:

Why am I not surprised Republicans don’t see the problem?

  22. Luis M says:

One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less than casual reference to this when in the cartoon they have police saying after shooting a chimpanzee that “Now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill.”

Well, One thinks Al is over-reaching a bit.

If they have said “they’ll have to find someone else to sign the stimulus bill”, that would be more obviously racist. This one? Not so much.

I also agree that they’re comparing Congress (both parties) as a barrel of monkeys.

  23. larkohio says:

I find it offensive. Relating people to monkeys or chimpanzees has been common in America as a wat to put people down. They did it with the Irish in the 1800’s. They have done it with African Americans, as well. It is not funny.

    2) It makes reference to the infinite monkey theorem suggesting that this chimp typed the stimulus ‘at random’ (Stupid- but not racist)

No. It’s not hypocrisy to refer to Bush as Chimpy while denouncing use of the term for Obama.

If great apes had been used as epithets for spoiled dry-drunk Texans for decades, it would be quite a different story. However, this is not the case. They were used as epithets against African-Americans, and thus any reference to Obama as primate is, by extension, a racial slur.

It’s not hypocrisy, just a double standard. Life is full of them – get used to it. African-Americans have.

That’s right, Barack Hussein Obama, whose skin happens to be black. Sorry folks, but you just don’t equate African Americans with monkeys. Well, unless your a damn racist (Please see the ThinkFast thread where I challenge blotchdog with the Howard Cossell parallel). Also, the assassination overtone is quite scary.

Agreed. But I think an argument can be made that knee-jerk cries of “racism” can also contribute to the institution of racism. They reduce racism, in the public sphere, from a broad-based system of oppression and discrimination, to a series of “gotcha” moments. Public debate begins to focus on who said what in a fuzzy YouTube clip, and ignores institutionalized segregation in housing, education, employment, and other critical areas.

We also have to look at intent. I don’t believe the cartoonist’s intent was to make a racial statement. Was the cartoon ill-advised? Yes, on many levels. But let’s kill the cartoonist for his bad verses, not for his perceived racism.

No, what is significant about the ‘racist’ implications is that they are murky enough thatthere are some folks who have to explicitly point them out… see Sharpton’s statement above.

I don’t deny that Obama faces racism every single day- see any post by Mr. Sucks for evidence.

I don’t deny that the cartoon is stupid and pointless- see any NY Post for evidence of stupid and pointless cartoons.

I do think that Sharpton is reaching here and that the reach, by equating this stupid, tasteless and pointless cartoon with stuff like Mr. Sucks posts, diminishes the racism that Obama actually faces… ’cause Mr. Sucks then thinks that we’ll complain about anything and therefore he’s not racist, we’re reactionary.

A monkey is a nonhuman primate mammal with the exception usually of the lemurs and tarsiers. More specifically, the term monkey refers to a subset of monkeys: any of the smaller longer-tailed catarrhine or platyrrhine primates as contrasted with the apes.

Let’s get into the real Sean Delonas.

NY Post cartoonist compares stimulus author to chimp

A political cartoon printed in Wednesday’s edition of the New York Post is already stirring controversy. The image, which was drawn by Sean Delonas — who has a history of work perceived as racist, homophobic and misogynistic — can be viewed below. It depicts two police officers standing over the body of a chimp one of them has just shot; the other remarks, “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”

The specific reference being made is to the story on the cover of the Post, a chimp in Connecticut who mauled one of his owner’s friends before being shot dead by police. And the “joke,” presumably, is the old 1,000 monkeys on 1,000 typewriters eventually writing Shakespeare bit. But given President Obama’s prominent role in the stimulus debate, and the history of racist comparisons between monkeys and black people, it’s hard not to see something else in the cartoon. Even if it was accidental, originally, it’s still difficult to believe that Delonas could have spent the time needed to draw the image and that it could then go through what was presumably more than one layer of editors without someone noticing a potential problem and then making a deliberate choice to run it anyway.

Turns out the guy has been caught ‘borrowing’ other cartoonists’ work and even reprinting his own cartoons. (Just flipped so no one can tell…shhhhh!)

At this link, you can watch the fallout:

Threats to New York Post Have Begun
Regarding this morning’s Sean Delonas monkey cartoon, a tipster tells us that New York Post is already getting lots of calls about it—some threatening to burn their building down!

It’s also a rather twisted misreading of the “monkeys at a typewriter” analogy, which is a thought experiment on the nature of infinity.

The fact is that an infinite number of monkeys tapping randomly at an infinite number of typewriters would have written the stimulus bill. Not could, would. Both the House and Senate versions.

They also would have written a version with every instance the word “funding” replaced by the word “spatula.” And they would have written a version in Pig Latin. And they would have written a version in perfectly Pinyinized Mandarin Chinese.

And they would have written the San Francisco telephone directory from 1972. And every paper you ever wrote for every class in high school and college. And this web page, including HTML markup. Including these words I’m typing right now.

    Is it satire? Yes.
Is it in poor taste? Yes.
    Is it racist? Possibly.
Does it display callous disregard for the implicit racist overtone of depicting the author of the stimulus bill, widely percieved to be our African-American president, as a dead chimpanzee? Absolutely.

    Olby Sucks Says:

    LINK for that cheering please.

  196. Constant Weader says:

The reader responses are interesting, varied & not definitive, so let’s dissect the elements of the cartoon & see if we can ferret out authorial intent.

The cops have shot what we know was a 200-pound chimpanzee who was thought to be a tame, harmless pet but who attacked, mauled & severely injured an innocent woman, a friend of the chimp’s owner. The chimp is a bad guy, and the cops, by extension, are good guys. They oppose & overpower the chimp.

The cop’s remark indicates the chimp wrote the “first” stimulus bill. President Obama wrote the first stimulus bill.

Ergo, the chimp is a stand-in for Obama.

So it is clear it was the artist’s intent to liken the President of the United States to a 200-pound chimpanzee who was thought to be a tame, harmless pet but who attacked, mauled & severely injured an innocent woman. That is to say, the artist believes the President is not the “tame pet” he seems to be. He is not “housebroken.” Behind his nice manners lurks a savage who will maul your women.

During the campaign, we saw a few “comments” like this, though most were much less blatant.

The cops — the good guys who represent law and order — have disposed of the President/chimp by violent means. Because they are “authorized representatives of the people,” their violence is presented as a justifiable means of returning law & order to the community/nation and “saving” women the President endangers.

Sorry, but this cartoon is worse than racist. It advocates the assassination of the President.

I don’t know what’s in the artist’s conscious mind, but I do know what’s in his subconscious mind — and it is sick, sick, sick. And dangerous. Rather than have Al Sharpton complaining about the cartoonist & the editors who approved the cartoon, I’d like to have some FBI profilers step in. Now. This is not something to take lightly.

The stimulus bill was not being characterized as stupid. It was being characterized as malevolent socialism, an insidious excuse by the Democrats to put forth their gay, socialist tree-hugger, feminazi, anti-white agenda. ACORN! Mice! Illegal Aliens getting free money! “Stupid’ was not part of the mix.
I don’t think you’re going to find much Republican ink at all about those amiable goodhearted but slightly dim-ocrats who want to help, and that’s nice, but they ignore what the experts say.
Defending the cartoon on the basis of ‘all sorts of people are saying the stimulus bill is stoopid’ is illegitimate, and not what wither Republicans or the Post had been saying.
Moreover, the chimp in the actual news story was not a dim, clueless animal who did something silly, but a dangerous beast who was intent on maiming and killing. This, interestingly enough, turns out to be a good match for the right wing characterization of the stimulus bill: a dangerous move by an enemy bent on hurting and destroying us.

If someone had used this trope in a written piece, on the order of this: “The authors of the stimulus bill, like the drug-crazed chimpanzee in CT, seem poised to rip our face off”–would we be much in doubt about the racism? If someone wrote “The chimps who wrote the stimulus bill,” would that be grounds for scoffing about racism.

I applaud Al for this riposte. It’s not a reasonable measured response–but I see no reason why Rev. Al can’t be his old angry and obstreperous self. Push them, Al. Make them depend–er, defend themselves

Attacking Sharpton for calling bullshit on the racist performance on the Post’s editorial page is very much a racist strategy, when viewed in the structural, as opposed to the individual sense. The fundamental excuse offered always by racists is that what they’re doing is just being misunderstood by overly sensitive people. How your editor allowed this to go to press says alot about your paper and I may never pay to read it again

P.S. I didn’t notice it, but the “Beware of the Dog” sign on the phone pole is an intentional reference to dogs attacking civil rights advocates in the South. The white cops depicted in the cartoon recall Bull Connor’s troops.

    _____________

Don’t you think it’s possible you’re reading a bit too much into the cartoon? I don’t deny that it’s racially insensitive, but this interpretation seems a few steps too far.

If there were a fire hydrant in the cartoon, would that be a reference to cops spraying civil rights activists with firehoses?

  251. billsmile says:

The page prior to the cartoon in today’s New York Post is completely devoted to the stimulus bill. There is only one photograph on the page & it’s a large half page B&W photo of Omama actually signing the stimulus bill.

Turn the page and the stimulus bill chimpanzee cartoon really stands out.

  252. clgray says:

The ape reflects the Post’s author’s barbaric mentality. A sign of what is in his heart – a desire for violence. If it wasn’t a crime, Sean would be the number one hit man. The cartoon shows a Peace officer that is SUPPOSE to uphold the law – caught – breaking the law. Dirty cops have broken a lot of laws and a lot of injustices have been against the people they should have been hired to protect, but instead abused-the black race. Coward fighters usually use a weapon to leverage their inferior position which is what is portrayed by the author’s violent use of a gun. The author is in the picture and modern day cameras are every where-got cha!. It never amusing to me to portray any US President assinated. The current President is a very loved man and he is attempting to undo some of the huge damage that men that look like Sean D. has been getting away with for far too long.

  253. BigIslandDave says:

I usually don’t like Al Sharpton, but anybody who doesn’t see that this is clearly racist (as well as insensitive to the tragedy of the murdered chimpanzee) is dull, stupid and obtuse. Or just mean and twisted and pernicious.

We have a lot of very sick people in the country — and a good number of them are so-called conservatives and Republicans. The Post, by the way, is nothing but a neocon rag. Shame on them.

What kind of logic is that. It’s racism. You can’t decide what is racist to other people idiot.

  256. had enough says:

Under no circumstances can that cartoon be tolerated.

Stimulus + ape + gun shots + death = seed of assassination

some calling into progressive radio justify this as bush was also characterized as a chimp… but never as a dead chimp.

    Response to #318:

Yes, it would. And I’m not the only one who has said so in regard to this particular cartoon. When an artist puts an element in a cartoon, he does so for a reason. As Chekhov famously said, “If you put a rifle over the mantlepiece in Act 1, you’d better use it to shoot somebody by Act 3.” We’re talking art comp 101 here.

All on this thread approving of the cartoon, this would be a good lead for a secret service investigation weeding out possible suspects of a presidential assassination.

As Chekhov famously said, “If you put a rifle over the mantlepiece in Act 1, you’d better use it to shoot somebody by Act 3″

Actually the rifle only has to ‘go off’ in Act 3, not shoot somebody… shooting someone would often be overly dramatic, as is your in-depth analysis of the fictional fire hydrant…

Reprehenible to publish a violent, hateful, racist cartoon like this. Freedom of speech includes newspapers depicting a racist image alluding to the assassination of the president? If the answer is yes, then they take absolutre responsibility for any violence their cartoon incurs. Trashy, tabloid crap from the NY Post, but what else do they spew? Repub propaganda for historians to highlight.

  264. WAYNEBRO says:

Al Sharpton just laid it out on Countdown.

What he said cannot be refuted.

There was no reason to use a Monkey. The monkey shooting had nothing to do with the stimulus, and there was nothing humorous about it considering a monkey had just been shot to death during a brutal attack on a woman.

There was just no reason to tie a monkey, a dead monkey, to anything to do with our president. While Congress wrote the bill, every newpaper, online article and pundit out there refers to it as “Obama’s Bill”.

Americans see the bill as President Obama’s bill, thus the cartoonist must have known that MOST Americans would conclude the monkey was intended to represent the President.

  265. WAYNEBRO says:

In fact, it was the press who called the Bill President Obama’s bill.

How many stories have we read over the last few weeks about “President Obama’s” bill? How many AP stories and Reuters stories referred to the bill as the President’s victory, or the President’s bill?

No reasonable person could conclude that the average American would not associate the bill with the President since the media’s been presenting it to them as his.

Thus, the New York Post must have known that the average American would conclude they were talking about the President in this cartoon.

Particularly given all the “monkey” references we’ve been subjected to over the past year.

They knew what they were doing, and I hope Al Sharpton kicks their ass.

  266. Jane E. Schneider says:

Waynebro, I agree with you completely on both comments (#332/333.)

I didn’t hear about the chimp attack story until Wayne told me when I got home from work. Shortly afterward, Tweety showed the “cartoon” on Hardball. Before seeing the “punch line” in the balloon, I already questioned what could possibly make this funny. My first visceral reaction after reading it was “Oh my god – he’s making a racist joke plainly showing a dead, bullet-ridden chimp as President Obama? And if that wasn’t the cartoonist’s intention, then WTF was? I’m totally confused, and the cartoonist’s own ‘explanation’ that the dead chimp wasn’t President Obama, and referring to Nancy Pelosi’ doesn’t help us understand exactly what he is trying to portray. Also, he has to realize that not everyone seeing it is aware of the chimp attack incident, so was he counting on only the tri-state area (NY/NJ/CT) would see it? Anyone who had not been aware of the chimp attack would be seriously wondering ‘why the dead chimp?” The whole thing, no matter what way you look at it, is disturbing at the very least.

And, as others have said here, there was nothing funny about the chimp attack itself. It goes without saying that no one should keep a chimp as a pet. Some here have mentioned that ‘it served the owner right’, and in my mind that would be true if the owner had been attacked, but it was the owner’s friend who was attacked and is now in critical condition. Just wanted to clarify that.

Wayne and I also discussed what we thought our reaction would have been if this ‘cartoon’ had been published 6 months ago by a liberal-leaning cartoonist/paper, with 8 years of ‘Chimpy” references in mind. We honestly believe that we would have been similarly outraged. It’s just wrong.

  267. Wayne A. Schneider says:

This cartoon is, literally, wrong on so many levels. Does anyone have the paper’s owner’s reaction? (Rupert Murdoch)

When did that happen? Seriously. Maybe I don’t view the same news media as you. When was Rice portrayed that way, and by whom? Can you give us specific names of papers, cartoonists, whatever? Thanks.

  270. erfBlatz says:

OK Here is a link to three racist cartoons, one by Jeff Danziger, one by Thomas olaphant (the Black Bird though not in a cage) and one by Gary Trudeau. The blogger basically explains them away giving only Oliphants a rating of boarderline racism.

    http://www.amptoons.com/blog/archives/2004/11/20/racist-cartoons-of-condoleezza-rice/

A Madison DJ Named Sly Sylvyster refferred to Rice as Aunt Jemima. He apologised to blacks but not to rice. He called Colon Powel an Uncle Tom.

    http://www.channel3000.com/news/3943395/detail.html

Three is a referencr to Rice as as Bushes Porch Monkey in this blog. It is rather obscure.

    http://www.dibsblog.com/index.php?s=oprah

The cartoons and the DJ were blatant. In Madison, there was comdemnation of DJ Sylvester But the NCAAP biggies were nowhere to be found. There is truely a double standard. There are many more examples form past campaigns, the way Clarence Thomas was treated etc, But it all gets explained away or ignored. Whats the point? Any objective person can see it.

  275. iheartwordpower says:

In the case of this cartoon, it is important to remember the sensitivity of racism and how many ideas can be conceived as racist, even if they are not. Journalists sometimes take freedom of the press to mean that they do not have to think before they act and are therefore not responsible for the backlash of a bad choice. Whether Sean Delonis meant it as a racially charged metaphor or not, the use of the monkey in his parody was entirely inappropriate.

  277. woke says:

NY Post’s Racist Ape Cartoon Is No Small Matter
By Phillip Atiba Goff, Miller-McCune.com. Posted February 19, 2009.

Persistent simian stereotypes tagged to blacks are not mere small and unimportant post-racial leftovers of the bad old days, argues a UCLA psychology professor.

Though much of the reaction to the cartoon has been outrage at the implication that our 44th president is remotely simian, there have been other messages in the blogosphere as well. A few pleaded with us to see reason in this post-Obama era. They begged us to understand that the cartoonist clearly meant to impugn congress, Wall Street executives and academic economists and that there was no racial subtext to the piece. Others saw the cartoon as racist but declined to become outraged. Saw the injustice in the image, but saw it as a minor injustice, not one worth worrying too much about. After all, having a black president means that America is post-racial and does not need to worry about petty things like harmless pictures in a paper.

The messages in my inbox mirrored the commentaries I saw online. A few (though not many) defending the cartoon. Many more exasperated with indifference. All of them insisted this was a little thing.

The best science available suggests otherwise.

For the better part of the past seven years, my colleagues and I have conducted research on the psychological phenomenon of dehumanization. Specifically, we have examined cognitive associations between African Americans and non-human apes. And the association leads to bad things. When we began the research, we were skeptical of whether or not participants even knew that people of African descent were caricatured as ape-like — as less than human — throughout the better part of the past 400 years. And, in fact, many were not. However, even those who were unaware of this historical association demonstrated a cognitive association between blacks and apes. That is, when they thought of apes, they thought of blacks and vice versa — when they thought of blacks, they thought of apes.

Most disturbing of all, however, was a study of media coverage and the death penalty. Looking at a sample of death-eligible cases in Philadelphia from 1979 to 1999, the more that media coverage used ape-like metaphors to describe a murder trial (i.e. “urban jungle,” “aping the suspects behavior,” etc.) the more likely black suspects, but not white suspects were to be put to death.

Not surprisingly, black suspects were much more likely to be described in ape-like terms. And they were more frequently executed by the state.

Similar psychological mechanisms of discrimination are at work in the bloated incarceration rates of young black men, the trenchant educational achievement gap between blacks and whites, and the racial bias evidenced in law enforcement officer’s use of force. Though some are demonstrating leadership towards equality, we find that many of our nation’s oldest racial shames have persisted into a period when a black person can reasonably aspire to the highest office in the land.

I mention these depressing findings because it is tempting to ignore them in the wake of President Obama’s inauguration — to downplay the significance of “isolated events” of bigotry and “harmless words or pictures.” But precisely because the dream of post-raciality is seductive for so many, it is all the more important that we not forget that cartoons like the one in today’s New York Post are never isolated-and consequently, never harmless.

Today’s Post cartoon is not far removed from the “Curious George” Obama sock puppet, a “Curious George” Obama T-shirt, a Japanese advertisement depicting Obama as a monkey, and countless other Obama/monkey comparisons that cropped up throughout the year-long Democratic primary and presidential campaigns. Psychological science has long known that words and pictures, far from harmless, can be the very instruments of dehumanization necessary for collective violence-regardless of how innocently they are intended.
