Santorum ignorantly refers to language of Qur’an as ‘Islamic.’

Yesterday, former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) delivered “a lecture on Islam” at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Santorum argued that the American public knows too little about the Islamic faith, and to prove his point, he asked the students whether they knew the difference between Sunnis and Shias. Only three audience members raised their hands. He continued:

santorum.gifSantorum said he believes Muslims’ religious views cannot be changed or altered, so Middle Easterners reject American, democratic ideals.

“A democracy could not exist because Mohammed already made the perfect law,” Santorum said. “The Quran is perfect just the way it is, that’s why it is only written in Islamic.”

As a self-anointed scholar of Islam, it’s surprising that Santorum would assert that the Qur’an is “written in Islamic.” It is, of course, originally written in Arabic. Islam is not a language, but rather a religion. Santorum concluded, “I think that if every citizen was fully informed about the war, it would create a commonality between faiths.” Indeed, much work remains to be done.

A survey by the Washington based Pew Global Attitudes Project, described in the Guardian, Knight Ridder in Pioneer Press and the Fort Louis Dispatch has found that globally, countries are more opposed to America than ever. In Britain, for example in 2000, 83% held a favourable view of the States, but that has sunk now to 56%.

Do you even read the links you post to, or do you just see a blurb that excites you?

Notice how that disapproval dropped from 83% in 2000, BEFORE Botch launched his self-professed bloody f-in’ crusade, down to just 56% in 2006, after the Toy Emperor had managed to kill prolly HUNDREDS of thousands of Iraqis, all in the name of democracy…

Seriously (snark over), Santorum is onto something in that we truly need to understand faiths other than our own. It makes absolutely no sense to fight people and attempt to change the lives of other people without even bothering to understand the fundamentals of what they believe. And Santorum needs to learn a great deal more before he attempts to educate others.

Which is why TP should start repalcing deleted comments with one of their own. They can say whatever they want like, “Stupid ignorant posted deleted by Admin”. Keep that phrase on the clipboard and use it often. But just deleting the comments, often long past time the damage was done, just screws up those comments that reference comment numbers.

TP, I appreciate that you excise the disgusting crap (and people) from the blog, but please do us a favor and leave the comment numbering intact. There are a couple of other threads with missing comments. It’s hard to follow the conversations when the comment numbers they reference aren’t the right ones.

Here’s a suggestion. Have someone who didn’t write the thread go through the comments and try to follow the comment number references. See how difficult it is when you come in later. Thank you.

    February 19th, 2009 at 4:12 am

OK, well if you really stretch the definition of language you could make a case for what Santorum said. Sort of. Bear with me here, I haven’t had any coffee yet:

Arabic isn’t A language. It’s three. Maybe seven.

The language of the Qur’an is technically Arabic, but it’s not a language that anybody speaks, or even writes in, today. It’s a classical, extremely formal version of the language that’s only used for reading the Qur’an. At the same time, the Qur’an is largely credited with formalizing the rules and patterns and measures and structures of Arabic, so it is a grammar text as well as a religious one. This classical language is intimately tied to the religion, and among certain circles over the past one-and-a-half millennia it was considered sacrilegious to, say, use the wrong vowel when speaking.

Arabs speak in local “dialects” of Arabic that are based on this classical language. Note that these are “dialects” in much the same way that Spanish and Romanian are “dialects” of Latin. They have their own distinct vocabulary, phonemes, and grammar.

Modern Arabs read and write in al-fu97aa (Modern Standard Arabic) a 20th-Century blending of the classical and colloquial languages with some commonly used loanwords. Literacy in Arabic is not merely a matter of learning to read the script – native speakers have to learn an entirely new language to become literate. On the positive side, this language is standard from Morocco to Iraq, so it enables Arabs of widely different dialects to communicate.

That all said, one could make a (very convoluted) case that the modern spoken dialects are “Moroccan,” “Levantine,” “Iraqi,” “Egyptian,” and “Gulfic,” the modern standard language is “Arabic,” and the classical language of the Qur’an is “Islamic.”

Whether Santorum was actually thinking along these lines is, of course, highly doubtful.

  162. EugeneDebs says:

Highly inventive and entertaining argument. Far from compelling but a VERY good effort. I doubt Chomsky or any other Linguist would subscribe to it. Your argument could just as easily be used to say that the Koran is written in Koranic. Not only is it HIGHLY doubtful if Santorum was thinking in those terms. A troll stupid enough to argue that not only is Hebrew a faith but that someone with the basic knowledge that it clearly ISNT was somehow embarassing it couldnt POSSIBLY be thinking in those terms.

  163. drobert_bfm says:

Funny, because Santorum believes the Bible is already the perfect law, which cannot be changed or challenged by human law…

  164. drobert_bfm says:

    @hussein_toasterhead:

Please read up on historical linguistics. You are sadly mistaken about the difference between dialect and language, mode and dialect, as well as to the nature of language evolution over time.

Simply put: Spanish and Romanian are not “dialects” of Latin in any way. They are languages historically derived from Latin (as all Romance languages are). The relationship between Classical Arabic and Modern Standard Arabic is significantly closer that that between Spanish and Latin; whereas the language of the Qur’an and the language of Modern Egyptian newspapers are recognizably the same, although in different dialects and different modes, no one can mistake a text in Spanish from one in Latin and claim they are the same language.

Arabic is not 3 languages, not 7 languages. It is one language, with numerous variants of various kinds; just like any other language spoken by more than a few thousand people. Only languages limited to small geographic areas, or tiny population have the luxury of homogeneity. Arabic is certainly not that.

    _________

Fair enough. In fact, I’ve also seen classical Arabic referred to as Qur’anic Arabic. But yes, no notable linguist would actually refer to the language as Qur’anic. That would be rather Mor’onic.

And the semantic debate rather buries the larger, even more Mor’onic point Santorum was trying to make, which is that Islam is unchanging and somehow incompatible with democracy. There would be a lot of Islamic scholars and clerics out of work if that were the case.

    ___________

I have read up on this, quite a lot. The difference between language and dialect has little to do with linguistics and a lotto do with the power politics of in-groups and out-groups. Cantonese is considered a “dialect” of Chinese because of the Chinese government’s desire to unify China. Meanwhile, Uyghur, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Uzbek, and Turkmen are considered languages rather than Turkic dialects because of the desire of Russian and Chinese occupiers to break up a group they considered threatening. The distinction is political.

Speakers of Arabic dialects identify their language as Arabic because of the prestige attached to Arabic by its association with Islam. Yes, the basic structures are common, but there are vast differences between the dialects, from the existence of the verb “to be” to the formation of the future tense to the structure of negation to the pronunciation of the Qaf. This is why MSA was created – to unify the colloquial variations.

Perhaps the comparison to Latin and its derivations is not an exact depiction, but I think it’s still illustrative of the gulf between colloquial and classical.

    http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hITyqVOjG08VRKlLCe5j7Wx4nhCQD96C3FEG4

An appeals court in Afghanistan upheld 20-year prison sentences Sunday for two men who published a translation of the Quran that drove religious leaders to call for their execution.

The controversial text is a translation of Islam’s holy book into an Afghan language without the original Arabic verses alongside. Muslims regard the Arabic Quran as words given directly by God. A translation is not considered a Quran itself, and it is believed a mistranslation could warp God’s word.

Chief judge Abdul Salam Qazizada invoked Islamic Shariah law when reading out the sentence, saying death would not have been an extreme punishment.

“He who commits such an act is an infidel and should be killed” according to some interpretations of Shariah law, Qazizada said.

As if Christians have a clue about their own crap…

He probably means things like these: the number of battles in which Mohammad participated or commanded; the number and ages of his wives; the two important communities where he lived; and his community organizing activities.

Remember, with Islam it’s always RPM – religion, politics, and military.

To the best of bit’s understanding Christ never sought power in any of these arenas.

    _____________

Whilst Christ himself, IF he actually existed, may not have, it certainly never stopped many a Christianist after him from trying.

    Crusades, anyone?

    White man’s burden?

I wonder what the students thought of his statement? Did they laugh, gasp or walk out?
    ___________

Actually, according to the lined article, they gave him two standing ovations.

Santorum lecturing about Islam is the equivalent of drew3rd lecturing about the “gay agenda”…

  178. kali90 says:

well, the guy’s a religious fanatic; these folks foster ignorance and irrational thinking; I don’t expect him to be too knowledgeable on any subject not related to his own rigid ideology or religious dogma…

  179. rastaman says:

SO YOU’RE SAYING HIS KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE QUR’AN IS A LITTLE FROTHY?

  180. jpopphan says:

First, let’s just go ahead and state the obvious: Rick Santorum is an idiot. His ignorance is frankly astounding. He is an embarrassment to this country and to the Senate where he served.

In regards to Islam, Santorum is perhaps one of the worst choices to deliver a lecture on the religion and culture. “Islamic” is an adjective; “Arabic” is a noun. If he can’t get the basic terminology right, then how can he be reliable on anything else on the topic?

“A democracy could not exist because Mohammed already made the perfect law.”

Well, Muhammad did not “make the perfect law”. He didn’t write anything – he was illiterate! The Qur’an was recited by him, following revelations from God. It was not written down until much later, some sources indicating that a written version of the Qur’an as we know it today did not exist until decades after the death of the Prophet.

It is also false to declare that Islam is incompatible with democracy. Muhammad was not a dictator; he regularly met and consulted with others and would follow the decision of the majority even if he disagreed with it. These councils are called “shura” and were an early form of democracy within the Muslim community. In fact, the nation with the largest Muslim population – Indonesia – is a democracy! Turkey is a democracy!

Yes, these are indeed exceptions. Most countries with a Muslim majority population are not democratic. This is not the result of Islam, but rather the legacy of colonialism and centuries of rule by monarchs and oligarchs.

Having Rick Santorum speak about Islam is no better than having the Ayatollah Khomeni speak about Judaism or Christianity. Both of these men have/had an ideological bias against those not of their own faith. Why anyone would listen to Rick Santorum is beyond me.

Besides, I bet Santorum doesn’t even know the answer to his own question re: the difference between the Sunni and the Shia.

  181. liberalinaredstate says:

“I think that if every citizen was fully informed about the war, it would create a commonality between faiths.” Indeed, much work remains to be done.
This kind of logic is so stupid and so onesided. Translation: if all the “Islamics” converted to christianity we would own the Middle East.

Dear Mr. Santorum, the only work that needs to be done here is you, you’re not even a work in progress. Remember Terrie Schiavo you cluck head and the mess you made of what was left of her life, ON A FEEDING TUBE? Go Home and shut the f**k up!

  182. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Is it just me, or does Santorum remind anyone else here of Neidermeyer, from “Animal House”?

  183. kpaul says:

I guess he is another guy who thinks people in Latin American speak Latin.

  184. LizCoro says:

Can the university demand the Santorum’s speaking fee be returned??

  185. EugeneDebs says:

    hussein toasterhead Says:

And the semantic debate rather buries the larger, even more Mor’onic point Santorum was trying to make, which is that Islam is unchanging and somehow incompatible with democracy. There would be a lot of Islamic scholars and clerics out of work if that were the case.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Mor’onic, VERY good. Not only that if it had ANY reality we wouldnt have had to overthrow the FIRST Islamic democracy in Iran in 53. Santorums cookie has clearly crumbled.

  186. EugeneDebs says:

    bitblt Says: 176

Wow bit you really are an astonishingly stupid moron. How many battles are recorded in Judges, Chronicles Kings? How many times did God instruct Joshua to kill everyone in a village every man woman and child and the farm animals? How many wives and how old did Solomon have? You are not only a bigot you are stupid. You dont know your own religion and just hate Islam out of knee jerk stupidity and being brainwashed. Being an ignorant brainwashed bigot is no way to go through life moron. Save yourself.

  187. lastory2006 says:

Actually, the Koran was ‘ORIGINALLY’ written in Aramaic, which is the reason that scholars argue over some specific meanings such as the whole 72 virgin thing. People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

  188. youtube says:

Europe schools does teach christian and jews religions and muslim, in usa seems like they don’t teach anything about islam, if you don’t teach then you don’t know anything about it.
