George Allen pitches the GOP to minorities: In sports, ‘you don’t care about race.’

ap061109020760.jpg Today, former Republican senator George Allen spoke at the Capitol Hill Club on “The Future of Hispanics in the GOP,” hosted by the Republican National Hispanic Assembly. Allen — who was disgraced after calling a young man of Indian descent a racial slur in 2006 — was trying to make the case on why Republicans need to be more tolerant on immigration. Dave Weigel captured some of Allen’s remarks:

I grew up in a football family. In sports, what you have is a level playing field…you don’t care about race, all you care about is who can help you win. Team America has to have that same competitive spirit!

People at the event also joked that Allen was an “honorary” Hispanic.

Allen clearly hasn’t seen Team America

“I tell you we never cared about Race when I played for the Richmond Macacas.”

  4. Shayne says:

Yeah that’s why there were so many African American coaches and quarterbacks back then. Idiot.

  5. tombaker says:

love’em on the ballfield – cross to the other side of the street from them downtown – that’s macaca love, and georgie knows all about it.

  6. DidHeJustSayThat says:

He didn’t learn that from his family experience! Papa Allen’s Redskins weren’t so color blind. The atmosphere was reportedly hostile to black players. Confusing tolerance with acceptance here.

  7. 5th Estate says:

    Allen translated:

” If we can’t fool immigrants and minorities to vote for us the GOP will become a permanent minority. I;m not asking you to abandon your racist principles, I’m just asking you to do a better job pretending you aren’t racist”.

  8. ralph the wonder llama says:

And, not coincidentally, African Americans are able to excel.

O course, when it comes to coaching and management opportunities, the field is not so level anymore. A mediocre white coach can get hired by team after team. An excellent black coach has one shot.

  9. EugeneDebs says:

Allen used to hang both a noose AND a Confederate flag in his office. The man is a racist pure and simple. He should be beaten with a copy of the civil rights bill until he has an epiphany

  10. 5th Estate says:

Is there any issue for which football isn’t the perfect analogy?

  11. Jackie says:

Allen will be labled with his racist remark forever because he still holds the inter hate. America has changed and Allen hasn’t caught up. Now like other Repubicans he thinks he can fool the minorities while cusing them at the Country Club.

  12. raynman says:

This analogy is perfect for the GOP. Just like Football, the GOP will use minorities to win games and bring fans to the stadiums. And, just like football (esp. college football), the GOP will then give minorities absolutely no shot in running the team.

Who’s the next disgraced and irrelevant right-winger to weigh in on the world view, Tom DeLay? Geeze.

Except when it’s race that you’re counting on to “help you win” — which is why the GOP puts their tokens front and center to give the illusion they have more minorities in their camp than they actually do. Powell, Rice, and now Steele — it’s doubtful they would have gotten nearly the exposure they did had they been white (no matter how well they did their job). Meanwhile, other nefarious forces in the GOP engage in voter caging and invent stories of widespread voter fraud in an effort to disenfranchise minorities.

The GOP acting sanctimonious about race is gag-worthy.

watchdog was totally pitching a fit on the Megyn Kelly thread. he was going nuts – so scared, so confused, so defensive…it was hilarious.

  24. sectionop92 says:

George Allen thought hockey would be the perfect sport for him, then noticed how many Canadians and Euros were in the NHL.

Then to George’s surprise, he saw the low percentage of African American ballplayers in baseball and thought he could get the good Latino American baseball players to go GOP.

Because as Michele Bachmann put it, the Republicans are running out of richers.

  25. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

**bbzzz, click, whirl, click** Hey, my AutoTranslator just went off. Here’s how it spit out what Allen really meant:

“I descended from a plantation owning family. On a plantation, what you want is a level growing field…you don’t care about the race you’re getting to do the work, all you care about is who can help you make money. Corporate America has to have that same plantation spirit!”

I wouldn’t write it in pen, joe.

Better use a white board and erasable markers.

Who was the first black quarterback to start in the NFL?

  28. DRxJ says:

In sports, what you have is a level playing field…you don’t care about race, all you care about is who can help you win.
Well, maybe in sports that’s true, but in politics, when you have a history of consistently degrading others of different color, we DO care!
And let’s face it folks, even recently, those hockey players that don’t have pearly white skin, where often mercilessly insulted and targeted for illegal, bone crushing hits.
And since our country is so young, care to explain our history of not letting minorities play, if all you care about is winning?
Hank Greenberg, Jackie Robinson, and Satchell Paige come immediately to mind.

  30. wwew says:

how many black QBs were there when allen played?

  31. MapleStreet says:

In sports you don’t see race. Jackie Robinson would have been as welcome in the Negro League as Babe Ruth was in the White League.

  32. kasinca says:

Yesterday Ricky Santorum the man dog former senator from PA and tody George Macaca Allen the bigotted former senator from VA. I guess the GOP is going deep to the bench…they must be suffering big time.

  33. Keith says:

In sports, what you have is a level playing field…you don’t care about race, all you care about is who can help you win.

Then why do I remember there being only one African-American basketball player in the entire Atlantic Coast Conference and only one African-American in the entire SouthEastern Conference? They’re just not very good at basketball?!?

  34. Zimzone says:

    Redskins. REDSKINS. Redskins. Redskins.

That’s your daddy’s legacy, Mr. Macaca. It’s perhaps the most racist name in sports.

You’re proud of that, right, Georgie?

  35. Keith says:

Allen said he was going to teach Mr. Macaca what it was like in Virginia—-when the guy was born and spent his whole life in Virginia.

  36. celtic cynic says:

In sports you don’t pay attention to race, but in politics you do??

Thanks for clarifying that for us, Mr. Allen.

  37. Zooey says:

If race doesn’t matter to former Sen Macaca, why is he always harping on it?

George Allen:I grew up in a football family. In sports, what you have is a level playing field…you don’t care about race, all you care about is who can help you win.

    What George Allen really meant

George Allen: In politics, the republicans want more of the minority vote. We don’t give a damn about Black Americans but we will pander and lie to you to try and get your vote because you can help us win, so then we can continue to support policies that aren’t in your best interests.

Well, the Republicans have also convinced blue collar people about the same thing…only they use divisive issues like gays, guns, God and abortion to divide the people and delude them into voting for Republicans. So maybe they don’t care about race, but the again, they don’t care about people in general either. Unless you come with a corporation in your back pocket.

  41. dbearton says:

And not a single reich winger would actually agree with the race part, but they would agree it`s all about winning!

  44. InOnTheFly says:

Oh George, I am sure that you are about to cause your poor, embarassed father to turn over in his grave once again! George Allen, one of this fine, upstanding, highly IMmoral group of Republicans (DeLay, Gingerich, Santorini, and now Steele among many others) just does not see the light. I can’t imagine just what his father would think of the not-so sterling example he sets for his children! Pathetic!

  45. jerseyboyblue says:

Ah, Georgie, when will you learn? The GOP forfeited any right to court minorites when you ideological ancestors (like Ronnie Ray-gun and Billy Boy Buckley) decided to ally themselves with some of the most virulent racists in US history.
