Majority of Americans disagree with Andrew Card: Jacket and tie not necessary in Oval Office.

card.jpgLast month, former Bush chief of staff Andrew Card criticized President Obama for not requiring a jacket and tie in the Oval Office, claiming that it brought a “kind of locker room experience” to the White House. Obama Senior Adviser David Axelrod hit back at Card recently, saying that “[w]e’re wearing short sleeves because we have to roll up our sleeves and clean up the mess that we inherited.” According to a new Fox News poll, 68 percent of Americans agree with Obama and Axelrod:

But when Obama decided to ditch the suit coat in the Oval Office some people took offense, such as former White House Chief of Staff Andy Card who said there should be a “dress code of respect” in the White House. The public is a little more button-downed about it: 68 percent are okay with a more “relaxed and casual” dress code, while 26 percent think a coat and tie should be required in the Oval Office.

Andy sure cuts a fine figure of manhood there in his “charlie-brown-goes-to-the-flea-market” getup.

Hmmm. 26%. Why does that sound so familiar?

  3. raynman says:

They could all be in thongs just as long as they run this country better than the last Administration.

okay, not all of them in thongs…that was a disturbing image….

  4. Theresa says:

Andy Andy Card should never go anywhere in shorts or without his bra. Quite the moobs!

Dude has some serious man-boobs! ROTFL! Seriously, America is in too much hot water to worry about this shyte!

  7. misshusseinmolly says:

Well, when you consider the “brag sheet” of all that went on in the West Wing during Card’s tenure, perhaps the dress code is about all he’s got.

Personally, I wish the current staff would turn the heat down a couple of notches and put on sweaters if they find jackets and ties too constricting — from a conservation standpoint, not because I give a rip about what they wear. But that’s a small nit to pick, and winter will give way to A/C weather soon.

  8. sectionop92 says:

Andrew Card really needs to stop playing the Mr. Blackwell of the Beltway role.

We’re talking about a guy who was basically a chimp in a business suit under Bush.

Then again, you could apply that saying to the whole administration.

  9. DRxJ says:

Oh dear lawd! At least I know why Andy Card usually wears a suit and tie. To cover up his manboobs and his THOs!!!
    YIKES!

  10. StratRat says:

I think this poor country has many, many more important things to discuss – not Card’s stoopid opinion about sleeves and jackets. And then to enlist a poll to determine if the newly poverty stricken citizens care one way or the other. I mean, we lost tens of trillions of wealth the last few months and this is what is getting airplay? It is truly no wonder this country is doomed. We care about things which don’t matter, and ignore issues requiring attention.

Haha, thought the same thing. It’s all the people who still think Bush was a good presidunce.

  12. tombaker says:

We could just start referring to that fraction of the populace as “The Quisling Quarter”, which would be fun, because none of them would know what that means.

  13. Hoodathunk says:

It is incredibly obvious that the only way Andy would possibly get a little respect is if he was dressed like an undertaker.

Personally I vote for large burlap sacks, a few rocks and a bridge drive by.

  14. lokidog says:

..while 26 percent think a coat and tie should be required in the Oval Office…

Yeah, and that’s exactly what that non-thinkning 26% got in the Oval Office:

a coat and a tie AKA an empty suit.

    Empty f***ing head, too!

    Awesome!!!

Seriously though, what do you think that 26% “slice” breaks down into as far as age, ethnicity etc?

I’m thinking, 75%+ of the 26% are 65 or older. 98% of them are white. Porbably 60% are men. See the trend?

  16. woodguy says:

This should read “buttoned-down”, not “button-downed”. I think that in order to address the public, one should be required to pass a basic English grammar test. I heard another brilliant “newsperson” the other day talk about “runner-ups”.

Aargh!! The stupid, it hurts. Don’t even get me started on syntax.

  23. Jackie says:

26 per cent are getting GOP kick back money. Remember Clothes Don’t Make The Man as we have seen for 8 years with the Bush Administration. Now Card is doing this best to protect Bush and Cheney but he to will be indicted let’s see if Bush/Cheney speak up for Card. Remember Libby was left hanging and will go to jail.

Shocker. You mean the same 26% who have blindly supported every move Bush has made for eight years? *rolls eyes*

  29. MyOwnPeace says:

I once had a boss who was too stupid to even realize who was doing an effective job in the building. So, since he didn’t know good work when he saw it, he focused on little things that even HE could understand:
    What time you arrived
    How you dressed
    What time you left
If you had your paperwork submitted by a certain deadline

Effective leaders know how to lead effectively
    Ineffective leaders “boss.”

For RepuBillys, perception is always more important than reality or actual results

For RepuBillys, murdering 100’s of thousands (Iraqis) and looting over $6 trillion in generation-theft deficit with (0) nothing of substance, benefit or improvement to America to show for it is “great leadership”

    - as long as you look good (as the policy with most large crime families) while doin’ all the “Criminalizing“…

    Broke…but smiling. Heh.

  34. krystalviews says:

Why is America broken? Because for the past 8 years these morons have focused on the shallow, superficial stupidities and left the important things go to hell in a hand basket.

  35. Khamron says:

Hey Krystalviews… absolutely no doubt. I mean this 2 or 3 trillion that the President is gonna spend, is sooooo worth it. We absolutely NEED that frisbee golf course. How come the Republicans don’t see that!

Hmmm. 26%. Why does that sound so familiar?

After stealing over $6,000,000,000,000 in generational-theft from our Kids and Economy and still “war spending” over $20,000,000,000 per month for a non-war, surprised the RepuBillys have not yet pounced on the chance for more “pretend outrage” at Obama:

For wanting the White House “tropical” which may increase the heating bill by about $500 per month

That additional frivolous complaint would fit their deranged hypocrisy policy perfectly

Wasn’t Andy Card one of the thugs of the Bush Crime Family that lied us into an unnecessary war in Iraq? I thought so. He should take a seat and await his trial.

Andy Card ( and the rest of the crew like him) acts both awfully arrogant and like he (they)has (have) a broomstick shoved up his (their) a#*. They simply cannot understand simple things, like the fact that the American people would rather have the folks in the oval office do good work than just look good.

  48. Constant Weader says:

What is laughable about this statistic is that probably 92.7% of the 26% who stand firm for the coat and tie dress code don’t actually own a coat & tie.

  49. joe cantwell says:

from ron suskind’s book, “the price of loyalty”:

“Go get me Andy Card,” Bush said to one of the Secret Service agents. Card, the designee as chief of staff, entered from an adjoining room. Along with Cheney, Card was running the transition, and he had a long history, having served every Republican President since Ronald Reagan took office. He is stolid and jovial, a man of solid, loyal character.

Bush looked impatiently at Card, hard-eyed. “You’re the chief of staff. You think you’re up to getting us some cheeseburgers?”

Card nodded. No one laughed. He all but raced out of the room.

O’Neill watched it all, not sure if he was seeing correctly. When he ran Alcoa, he had a rule if he was considering buying a company, and he bought many: See how the CEO interacts with the receptionist, the secretary, with whoever is at the very bottom. It’s a sign of how the boss values the people around him. It’s a character issue.

    memories, memories.

  50. HungryHungryHippo says:

I agree with comments made previously that the press and everyone else for that matter should have much more important things to discuss than a dress code. But I do think that there should be a certain level of respect that an administration should have for tradition and a country’s history. The oval office has been home to all of the great presidents and should not be taken casually or approached with a laid back attitude. I would like to see a certain level of respect Obama has for the office and history, especially in his first few weeks on the job.
