Pelosi foresees prosecution of senior Bush administration officials.

pelosiweb.jpgLast month, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said she is open to pursuing investigations of abuses by the Bush Justice Department. “I want to see the truth come forth,” she said. But in a new interview with Rolling Stone, Pelosi went a step further, saying that she believes some senior Bush officials — such as Harriet Miers, Josh Bolten, and Karl Rove — will be prosecuted:

RS: Do you foresee a scenario in which senior members of the Bush administration are actually prosecuted?

PELOSI: I think so. The American people deserve answers. Where we are now, in terms of prosecution of White House staff, is that we have charged them with contempt of Congress. We’re talking about Harriet Miers, Josh Bolten and Karl Rove. The natural course of events from here is that the speaker will determine what charge we’re going to pursue, because there are more than one. Under Bush, the Justice Department told the U.S. attorney not to prosecute the case. So the beat goes on — it just gets worse. We don’t know what will happen, because they’ve delayed it a long time.

Pelosi later said that “we should have a full examination” of the Bush administration’s alleged crimes, adding that what Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) “is putting forward, in terms of a truth-and-reconciliation committee, has always been helpful. It was helpful in South Africa, [and] it was helpful in Rwanda.”

Update Salon's Alex Koppelman argues that there aren't going to be any prosecutions.

  18. curious says:

My what a change in her rhetoric. I will believe it when I see it.

The President can encourage it. But legally speaking the mandate is already written into the Constitution. It is the law. If Ford had not pardoned all that wrong doing, and Clinton had pushed for prosecution of Reagan and the rest for Iran Contra etc, we would not being contending with what Bush has done. If there had been accountability, no one believes for a minute that Bush and his criminal regime would have tried doing what they did. They were able to do it because the former Presidents that broke the law were not punished.

Obama is not the one who will say if REAL INVESTIGATIONS are done. It is already mandated by law. And as a Constitutional lawyer he knows this. It is up to what is left of the Justice Department to investigate and prosecute, not the President.

As I said, I will believe it when I see it happen. The Democrats lack spine, I won’t hold my breath. They can’t take Republican heat, they always fold.

Pope to Pelosi: Catholic politicians must oppose abortion

Congressional leader responds with family photographs

    Nancy Pelosi

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has described herself as an ardent Catholic, has responded to a call from Pope Benedict XVI for politicians to work to protect “all stages” of life with comments about how much a joy it was for her to share photographs of her family with the Vatican.

The Vatican said Pelosi and the pope met briefly in private, and Benedict shared with Pelosi, a prominent supporter of abortion, the church’s teaching “on the dignity of human life from conception to natural death.”

According to a report from the Associated Press, the expression often is used by the pope to oppose abortion.

The Vatican’s statement about the meeting confirmed Benedict told Pelosi Catholics – and specifically political leaders – need to work toward a “just system of laws capable of protecting human life at all stages.”

    BINGO.

The utter hypocrisy of doing absolutely nothing to stop Bush when she had the power to do so because it was bad politics for the Democratic Party and now, after the fact, after they have won their elections, to start comparing Bush policy to Apartheid and Genocide and saying maybe we’ll act now? I mean, if it is like Rwanda, wouldn’t you want to do all you can no matter what the political cost?

Amazing cynicism. Personally, the comparsion of Bush to Rwanda is completely absurd on its face, butif you actually believe it, why did you do nothing?

It is very hard to not despise Pelosi. Sorry.

  37. Comrade Rutherford says:

After blocking every attempt to hold Bush accountable for his war crimes and willful violations of the Constitution since 2006, now she thinks that maybe some day Bush might have to answer to the Law???

Why is she Speaker, when she announced ahead of time that she had pre-agreed on to be an accomplice in the Bush Administration’s crimes against humanity and egregious violations of the Constitution?

The law is very clear, if you help a criminal in his crime, you too are accountable to the law. Pelosi, by adamantly refusing to uphold her Constitutional duty and actively helping the Bush Administration get away with mass murder, she too is culpable under the Constitution and the Law.

Why is she Speaker, because she is under the direct control of the Republican Leadership. What other possible reason could there be for her o ignore her constituents demands for the Rule of Law to be upheld?

If bit were called in by the leadership of the congregation where he attends and told that his actions were inconsistent with the beliefs of the congregation, he would take it as something very serious.

From the same WND link in the above bitblt post…

WND reported this week a Catholic website has launched a petition that targets Vice President Joe Biden and Pelosi, calling on Catholic church leaders to discipline them by withholding communion because they “not only disregard the Church’s teachings … but actively and publicly promote policies and legislation that undermines, opposes and contradicts the church.”

I personally could give the proverbial rat’s ass what the Pope thinks. Let’s hope that Pelosi is actually aware of the separation of church and state, and doesn’t give any credence to what an old man in a white robe wants her to do, in violation of her oath to uphold our Constitution.

And, I know I am in the minority here, but how exactly do all of you think impeachment was going to get off the ground while Bush and his DOJ were in power? The sensible thing to do was to wait until prosecution had a chance of success. Yes, it would have been a grand gesture, but only a gesture, whereas now we might actually see some jail time for this scum.

I am as frustrated as most people about how long it takes, but the reward of actually putting Rove in jail should be worth the wait.

I don’t understand who will bring any charges against the criminals that ran the country for the last eight years. Will it be a Congressional Committee, or the AG? Why is pelosi even talking about this now? Conyers, Waxman, Wexler, and Kusinich tried while the crimials were in office, but she said, after the 06 election, that impeachment was off the table. pelosi apparently even threatened Conyers with loss of his chairmanship if he pushed for impeachment. One of the things that led to the Dems gaining so much in the House was the idea that there would be impeachment. Our Constitution does not have any section calling for a truth & reconciliation process. I don’t want that; it is nonsense and it probably didn’t work all that well in SA or Rwanda. Not everyone came forward. I want some real prosecutions so we have something for future generations to look back to solve their problems should this arise again.

This comment is wrong on so many levels. Let’s just start with the idea that the United States is a nation of laws, starting with the Constitution and including any and all international treaties that have been signed over our history. Members of the Bush administration disregarded or broke several of those laws. The effects of their acts on this country and the world will be felt for years. It is NOT “done with.” In order for the U.S. to again become a nation of laws, and a true world leader again, the perpetrators of those unlawful acts must be prosecuted. Our laws demand it.

The “much more pressing issues at hand” are issues that were caused by or under Bush’s “watch.” We’re too busy cleaning up his messes to be ‘pouting’. I suspect that you would be singing a different tune had a Democratic President done one-tenth of the damage that Bush has done.
