What are Kathleen Sebelius’ views on health care?

Top advisers to President Obama are telling the New York Times that Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D-KS) — the former insurance commissioner and two-term blue governor from a red state with a knack for bipartisanship — is Obama’s top choice to head the Department of Health and Human Services:

It remained unclear whether the White House would finish vetting Ms. Sebelius in time to nominate her by next week. Advisers described her as “the leading candidate,” although they said other names were still in discussion and emphasized that no final decision had been made.

The Wonk Room reviews Sebelius’ record on health care and concludes “her ability to reach health policy decisions by soliciting the views of a broad spectrum of stakeholders suggests that she’ll be an important player in promoting Obama’s health reform agenda and a strong consensus builder.”

    – - Thew more pertinent question is, does she have any tax issues?

I’m not real happy about this pick. I think she is way more valuable to progressives tamping down the reichtwingnutz republicans in Kansas for two years and running for (and hopefully winning) a Senate seat in 2010.

  4. spencers mom says:

All I want to hear is whether or not she is opposed to at least looking into a single-payer system. If not, please keep looking. (hint: Dr. Dean)

I am on the emailing list for plenty of the existing insurers, and they are counting on more money/profits from more government business. Healthcare lobbyists are gonna be very busy. And very profitable.

    PEACE

I like her. Her dad was the governor of Ohio for awhile. He did a good job.

i don’t know why HOWARD DEAN is getting the shaft in the Obama admin……but it’s clear that he’s been blacklisted.

all progressives should be mad as hell

  7. COProgressive says:

The more important question is when are we going to kill the medical insurance industry that is sucking up 30% of every dollar spent on health care?

Why do we still have an industry between the care giver and the patient that makes its generous profits not by PROVIDING Health Care, but by DENYING Health Care?

The time is now for Universal Single Payer Health Care!

Put a stake in the heart of the medical insurance industry! Let the medical insurance industry go the way of the buggy whip industry. Universal Single Payer Health Care now!

It is instances like this where I really begin to see why a lot of people were up in arms about Rahm Emanuel heading up Obama’s staff. He some prior beef with Dean and I believe is someone in the administration who is directing the search to go elsewhere. Dean has all the credentials you would want – he’s proven he can organize large groups and bring change AND he was a doctor and his wife is a doctor. It is unbelievable he isn’t being mentioned as the common sense pick…

  9. pablito says:

This is pretty disappointing. Bipartisanship is clearly a joke given the current climate in the House and Senate GOP, so why bother with someone who can play both sides? Howard Dean is bipartisan enough, but more importantly is a progressive, clear, and strong thinker who actually knows something about health care delivery.

    I second that emotion!

It is completely insane how someone can try to justify health care for profit. It is a ridiculuous concept that really is – at its core – a true example of where capitalism goes WAAAAY wrong.

I also hate the Con trope about, oh we need consumer choice and free market to get the best health care. This is pure bullshit – for-profit companies FIRST AND PRIMARY CONCERN is to make money. The easiest way to make money off of health care is by NOT providing care all the while charging high premiums and deductibles.

  11. APEC not OPEC says:

This will turn into a circus. Dr.Tiller the “baby killer” is from Kansas. Fox news and O’Reilly will go nuts.

Dr. Howard Dean…Here we go again…Or should I say ,still…..I was and am for Dean…Probably no one here will agree with me on this and other matter’s of our President Obama. Let me start off by saying I did vote for him and it could be worse, we could of had another election stolen and got stuck with the wack job’s on the reich…

Having said that now I will get to the meat of my complaint….Imanual’s skirt’s don’t seem to be very clean from all the item’s I have read on the net highway and any one who is so closely tied to the pres. that can prevent good people from being installed into the appropiate position’s because of a personal vendetta can’t be a good thing…I was against Obamas choice of Imanuel from the start for many reason’s, now it’s just adding one more…This could turn out to be a slightly better version of Rove/Bush if you get my drift….Blessings

If something is not done with our existing corrupt health care system in the Obama administration, I along with may other will be disappointed… and will look forward to another candidate in ‘12…. will wonder if Obama is in bed with the corporate giants.

Going to a single payer medicare for all health care system will bring corporations back to the US and help ease that burden on businesses in general. It makes no sense in staying with a system, a system other countries do not want to follow, one that picks and chooses who to cover, finds ways of not paying, tells the physicians how to do business while taking a 30% profit off the top.

    BRING ON HR 676 !

IF Rahm is behind Dean not getting this post then we are in deep doodoo as Witch1 sez above.

IF Dean doesn’t want the job because Rahm is there then again, we (everyone who needs healthcare) are in the poo.

This is all about Rahm accepting credit from the media for the congressional wins of 2006 because they didn’t want to credit Dean. They hate Dean because he harnessed this community right here and did an end run around the media. Let’s not forget they lost serious campaign spending $$ to the internets. All that bank that candidates raise used to get spent on TV and print ads. Now they spend first on building web presence and less on big (old) media buys. Good luck ever finding good “press” on Dean ever again. Grudging credit at best. Did you read all those hossanahs about how Howard rebuilt the Dems from the ground up during his all-to-brief tenure as DNC poobah? Neither did I.

So Rahm accepts credit in ‘06 without saying anything (publicly anyway) that Dean’s 50-state strategery was as much a factor (more so, if you ask me).

Rahm’s not the only one with ego though. You have to have a health self-regard if you run for POTUS which Dean has.

But right now the POTUS needs to get these 2 in a room. If there was ever a time for D. Kearne-Goodwin’s famous “team of rivals” scenarioit’s right now and the issue is healthcare.

Dean’s the best choice. Rahm’s the roadblock. They need to hug that shit out (as Rahm’s fictionaized brother would say).

  16. had enough says:

Obama’s choice to head the Department of Health and Human Services will be the make or break, the truth telling as to where Obama stands in this disgusting multinational corporate trend we have today.

He either chooses a Dean or Kucinich for the people type or succumbs to corporate power, continues business as usual.

I have contributed several times to the Obama campaign, worked for his campaign, but now my heart weighs heavy with doubt.

    We will see.

  17. pimothy says:

Nobody deserves HHS more than Howard Dean, let’s remember the talk about the need for adults in the room when refering to the republicans.
Let’s go the single payer route administered by MEDICARE!
