At Least 22 Lawmakers Have Touted The Money From The Recovery Package They Voted Against

shuler.jpgOn Wednesday, ThinkProgress pointed out that several Republican lawmakers who voted against President Obama’s economic recovery package are now touting its benefits to their constituents. The New York Times picked up on the phenomena yesterday, writing that “the temptation to take credit for at least a few of those billions” has proved “irresistible” to the anti-stimulus lawmakers.

For instance, Rep. John Mica (R-FL) gushed after the passage of the bill he voted against, releasing a statement that applauded Obama’s “recognition that high-speed rail should be part of America’s future.” Mica’s chief of staff, Rusty Roberts, defended his boss to the Times, saying that “it’s possible to oppose the entire bill on principle and favor certain sections of it.”

Roberts isn’t alone in this rationalization. Thus far, ThinkProgress has found at least 22 lawmakers who voted against the bill, but have spoken positively about what the money will do for their constituents. Here are a few examples that the New York Times missed:

— Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID) bragged to Idaho lawmakers that “Approximately $400 million plus, maybe as much as $465 million will come to INL right here in Idaho for hundreds of new jobs and a significantly expedited clean up activity.”

– Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC) defended his vote against the bill on Thursday, but added that he was “prepared to fight” for “Western North Carolina getting its fair share” of the stimulus money.

ThinkProgress will continue to add to our list and follow members of Congress who tout the benefits of the recovery package that they voted again.

  3. KayInMaine says:

Personally, I think the republicans who voted against the bill should not have their states receiving any of the money. They need to be held accountable for voting against the interests of their constituents.

Specifically the money that is going to your own district.
    Phony.

  5. Above the Clouds says:

They WANT and NEED that money, their constituents WANT and NEED that money–they just can’t bear to think it is coming from a progressive, Democratic President and a supportive Democratic Congress. What has your GOP done for YOU, lately?

  6. Tundra says:

If they refused the money then they would be accused of “trying to make Obama’s plan fail” by not going along with it. If it did fail and not properly stimulate the economy the complaint from here would be “Almost half the states didn’t follow the plan of course it failed”. “It’s the rethugs forcong the economy to stay down”.

So basically most of you will never be happy unless everyone bows down and does exactly what Obama says, when he says it with zero disent.

You gotta love the party of NO. Their only agenda is to make sure Obama fails so they can win back congress in two years. They will take the money only to make sure the people of their states don’t vote their asses out, but in the long run they will continue to do everything they can to make sure Democrats and the country fails. I hope there is a special place in hell for these clowns.

Groups are keeping tabs on these frauds and this vote will be back to haunt those whose seats are up for grabs in 2010.

Jindal’s chances of being elected just plummeted proportionately as well. He now looks like a total “misanthrope” (people hater).

  17. Tundra says:

Yeah cut them out, the plan will still work with only half the people actually following it.

Why do you guys want to see the economic plan fail?

  18. Another Joe says:

While you are doing a good job flagging this for TP readers, and I am grateful that you keep us posted, much of America will never know nor will the “connect the dots” so understand that if the repugs voted as a block against this, they are hypocrites to take credit for and or “tout” the cash that comes in as a result of the bill the tried to block.

Even worse than trying to block it, is the dishonest rhetoric before and after passage.

Until we work together to influence the mainstream media, these lawmakers know that their hypocracy does not matter – their “base” will just be watching the likes of “faux news” anyhow.

  19. rimhotep says:

Let’s face it: It’s a LOSE/LOSE for the Party of No (PON).

If the plan works, they’re totally screwed; if the plan fails, they get blamed for all of the criticism and negative publicity.

Whether it was sheer genius of this administration or just serendipity, it’s worked and the GOP is looking lamer and more impotent than ever. Obama can’t lose now.

  20. rimhotep says:

Mary: Just look under the synonyms for “pure evil” and there you will see the members of the GOP.

  21. rimhotep says:

The mainstream media which is fascist owned and operated will never become enlightened and report the truth (facts). That’s why people are now boycotting them – with the exception of MSNBC. Fox news has been totally discredited and Murdoch’s empire is coming apart at the seams. I imagine that his newspapers will slide into total irrelevancy and we will see the end of his network news channel within the next two years. News Corp is hitting the skids right now and will not endure.

  22. angels81 says:

Jindal thinks he is going to be the next President, so he doesn’t give a shit about the people of his state, except the rich ones. He is betting on Obama failing and repugs will then gain control of the congress and then the white house. With repugs it always party and politics first and the country last.

Cut them out? It’s more like make them stick to their principles. None of them said this could work. None of them said parts of the plan are good, lets work to make it better. No. They spoke with a unified voice and said this was a bad plan that was loaded with pork and what needs to be done is cut taxes on the rich, again. So be a man, and take responsibility for your actions. Or be a republican and whine.

  24. Old Goat says:

    Tundra says:

Yeah cut them out, the plan will still work with only half the people actually following it.

Why do you guys want to see the economic plan fail?

Perhaps you can point out where anyone said that they wanted to see the economic plan fail.

Personally, I think cutting funding to the states whose republican thugs didn’t vote for the package is a bit extreme, as the people still need the monty… but I can see the point. If the states don’t receive the money, they can thank their local republican representative or senator who voted against the package.

Since most (not all… I am not generalizing) right-wingers are military-minded… it’s the political equivalent of punishing recruits in bootcamp for the screwup of one guy.

Still and all, it is a bit extreme… no reason for those who need the money to be punished… but hey, their republicans were intent on punishing them anyhow by voting against the package… right?

    “You guys” indeed… generalize much?

  25. Old Goat says:

  34. backup says:

    – Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC) defended his vote against the bill on Thursday, but added that he was “prepared to fight” for “Western North Carolina getting its fair share” of the stimulus money.

If his constituents are going to pay for it, I don’t think you can criticize him for trying to fight for his constituents to get the benefit they are paying for.

On the other hand, If Jindal refuses part of the money because he doesn’t think LA needs it, why would you criticize someone for electing not to spend money.

There is an effort here to go after anyone that opposed the stimulus. I get it. But, besides going after the officials that want to take credit for funds they voted against, (Not Jindal and not Shuler and others), it just comes off as sour grapes against those that disagreed with your position.

It’s a big country. It’s a lot of money. People feel different ways. It’s okay to disagree.

  35. Old Goat says:

Umm… what? See, he didn’t even want his constituents to have it in the first place. He is being a hypocrite. Flip-flopping. If he disbelieves in it the stimulus package that much, why isn’t he sticking to his guns instead of refusing a cookie from the jar because cookies fall outside of his own diet plan?

Simple… because cookies are sweet and delicious, and he just can’t refuse.

But of course, if he says he’s doing it for his constituents… makes him look like he discovered the cookies that will feed all.

    Damn, now I’m hungry.

  36. Tundra says:

    “You guys” indeed… generalize much?

Used as anyone who doesn’t want those states to get the money. While I am not sure how many “teams” they have been on, but when you are making a plan you can be against it. Once it becomes the “official plan” you do everything you can to make it work, even if you don’t believe it is the best one.

I don’t know, why don’t you ask Rush?

Not a big fan of him because he is just as partisan as this site. As long as people keep insulting the other side and refuse to work together, nothing will ever get better.

By trying to refuse those states money you are forcing the plan to fail because it is a “total” plan. Doing half of it will fail, but then you can still have your “boggieman” and continue to be upset. Win/Win. Or you could get behind Obamas plan and want to see it implemented as it was written and see if it can fly on it’s own merits.

backup, Jindal is not saying they don’t need it. Jindal is saying that he doesn’t think people who have lost their jobs should get anymore help from the feds, because in his mind they have gotten enough. Maybe they will just die and then it would solve their problem by having less poor people that they have to deal with. New Orleans would be such a nice place if there were less poor people. I’d say it’s the same thing w/ Roland Burriss.

The Dems didn’t want to seat Roland, if I recall. GOOPers immediately called them racists for not doing so. The Dems were in a bind. They had no legal ground to not seat him but they might have suspected something like this was going to come up. and so did the GOOPers.

So now the Dems and the St of Illinois have to go thru this whole circus of dealing w/ Roland, who should just come to his senses and resign. And now the GOOPers will try to use Burriss as an example of Dem corruption.

First they were racists and now they’re corrupt, but they didn’t want to seat him for all the right reasons in the first place.

i sent some links to the TP stories about this to the “ace stenographer” at my local daily… there was a story in yesterday’s paper about the IL 19 congressman john shimkus, who was speaking here… he said he is “disappointed” with the focus of the stimulus package…

“It’s passed so I have to cheer for it [...] In 18 months, I hope they prove me wrong.”

“It’s an embarrassment,” he said. “It’s the largest spending bill in the history of this country — equaling all emergency spending since 9/11.”

… he is ‘particularly disappointed with the relatively small amount of money earmarked for infrastructure’…

he ‘charged congressional Democrats with putting together sloppy legislation too quickly.’ “I don’t think they cared what was in it,” he said. “This was supposed to be a job creation bill, but there’s more money for growing government. We did something, but we could have done so much more.”

i wish †he story was online because typing so much is a drag…
but it was an interesting story… not sure what he was saying elsewhere, but this is pretty friendly territory for him… has gotten re-elected 2 more time since promising to only serve 2 terms…

oh, this is good: he said ‘many of those jobs [in the 19th] will be in the energy business, baring growing concern about global warming… a coal fired plant is under construction in washington co., [others] proposed for [2 other areas]‘…

“But the climate change debate could threaten all those jobs.”

‘Shimkus pledged to be an advocate for traditional forms of energy in Congress.’

“You can’t build enough windmills or solar panels to run factories,” he said.

Business as Usual is no longer an Option.

If this plan is to succeed, it will require Transparency, Scrutiny, Evaluation, and Follow up.

    Obama stated clearly:

If a federal agency proposes a project that will waste that money, I will not hesitate to call them out on it and put a stop to it,” …And I want everybody here to be on notice … if a local government does the same. I will call them out on it and use the full power of my office and our administration to stop it.”

Here a democrat congressman who voted against the stimulus bill, and now he says that he wants to fight for to get it, why? You weren’t thinking about state citizens when you voted against, now you do think about them, how nice of you :)

Here’s an attempt at explaining it. Let’s say you live in a condo complex and at an association meeting there is a proposal to get new plumbing for the aging building. Many people want to plumb the building, but there are no funds to do it. The association will go into debt to do it. There are a few people in the building that don’t want to spend the money, because they don’t think it’s necessary. But, the association decides to go ahead.

Those people that voted against the new plumbing might go back to there families and say, ‘well, we did not want to spend the money for new plumbing, but if we are forced to pay for it, I’ll make sure our unit gets the new plumbing.

Some of those (Jindal) decide that they are so confident in the old plumbing that they tell the association to skip plumbing their unit, so the association can keep the money for other projects; that’s their prerogative and it actually benefits the association.

I agree that it is hypocritical for someone to try to take credit for an initiative they voted against. But, I don’t think that’s happening in the case of Shuler or Jindal.

  128. McWars says:

You know, I didn’t expect — yes, I didn’t expect — the outrage from the bobbleheads over $75 billion in money for we the people that has a great chance of paying for itself, when these types haven’t put up much of any fight over hundreds of billions of dollars, if not over a trillion, in combined spending between TARP and the Federal Reserve on the banks in trouble. And guess what? The banks have shown no real appreciation for the money. They’ve created controversy, not restored wealth for the people.

Was is Citigroup who, after Obama’s mortgage plan unveiled, informed a man they were pressing ahead with their plans to foreclose on his house? I think it’s time to do away with personhood treatment of corporations.

let me turn you over to our friend backup again:

    *

    backup Says:

I understand the point that some behaviors should just not be condoned.

But, I also believe that it is easy to call someone an idiot, or stupid, or a racist, or a bigot. I just don’t think that does much to change the individual’s mindset.

    *

    does that help?

    no? well here’s backup’s friend

    and “southern strategist” bert convy:

    *

    BERT CONVY Says:

GAD! The Rapist and Chief and Her Thighness bought a mansion with the scam they did with the Secret Service after they carpetbagged their way into New York. We are actually paying for their palace and you demulous-porkulous-stimulus libby-loons are still throwing the mother of all hissy-fits about GW? Pull them panties out of that bunch and get over it.

    *Yippie-Ki-Yay Democrappers

    *Bert

    *

    feel better now, angel?

    :)

i do have a question: is that moniker redundant?

  150. angels81 says:

cantwell, that was cute, but I don’t see what that has anything to do with me. And by the way, I feel just fine.

  151. Jane E. Schneider says:

Hope all is well in the Schneider household.

Tundra, not too bad, thanks for asking. At least we’re both still employed, so it could be worse. Hope all’s well with you. Say hi to my old buddy squeegeeboo.

Go back to your middle eastern heaven and get the f**k out of this civilized country. Will you? You ignorant, nearly illiterate hillbilly!

I kinda did too Katy but see my post at 141.. I tried to give the person an out and got slapped in the face for it…..see their response at 147

Now Joe, you know that calling someone ignorant isn’t the same as calling them stupid. Calling someone ignorant is just an observation, calling them stupid is name calling.

  159. youtube says:

dont get between us gummitch, i really wanna smash this junk, or whatever he is, or maybe he lives in trailer park or something, his language is like a people who lives on the street and ask for a dime to get drug or weed

  160. angels81 says:

Fred I’m not trying to get into a pissing match with anyone. I have posted my opinions about this issue, and I’m not really interested in name calling. I have no problem with people attacking my point of view on any given issue, but when someone starts off by calling me a troll I take offense. Also, if you know anything about the bike world, it shouldn’t be hard to figure out my moniker.

  161. backup says:

joe. you’re trying to tie me to a poster from a different thread that I was never even on. I’ve never engaged with Convy. The post that you reproduce from Convy, is repugnant, I agree. But, how am I responsible for his comments, especially when he’s making them on a thread I was never on?

To be kind, I’m not seeing it. Please explain what you mean.

  162. Tundra says:

or maybe he lives in trailer park or something

What’s wrong with people that live in trailer parks? There are plenty of single parents, low income workers who reside in them.

  163. katy says:

you didn’t get slapped, fred… he just took it wrong and got defensive…

don’t get mad here, but, i was thinking angels was acting kinda like you when you first arrived… heh.

    you did good @141…

  164. youtube says:

  165. Fred says:

angels81, I believe that if you were honest that I was just trying to help you out…..it’s your game so play through.

the one great thing about life is that you always get a chanced to start fresh if you want to.

If you’re not willing to understand how it can happen then I’d be surprised to find out that you were really interested in what anyone else has to say…..

If you are easily offended, as most bikers are, then this probably isn’t the place for you.

  166. Tundra says:

tundra thats offended to you ? get a second job then

I personally don’t live in one, however I don’t have a problem with anyone that does. While you may prefer that they live in government subsidized housing, some of them live where they can afford and don’t take handouts.

Maybe isolating someone with wrong views works and is the answer for society.

But, much like our prison system, maybe it is just any easy short term solution that doesn’t address the root of the problems. Problems that will persist, until we address them with more difficult dialogue.

Anyways, I know I’m outnumbered. So, I’ll let it go.

    *

it isn’t numbers backup (see the post on am radio).

    we’ve seen “compassionate conservatism”.

we’ve had eight years of a “uniter not a divider”.

your soft soap doesn’t sell because it’s the same

product with a different label. and spare us your bogus

piety about easy name calling. the man in the above picture

(rush limbaugh, you remember him?) has been name calling for

over twenty years and made millions off of it. without protest much less

“difficult dialogue” (who writes your material?) from the likes

    of you.

  173. angels81 says:

Come on Fred, I’ve been reading the comments on this thread all morning. There is plenty of personal attacks going on and I see people responding in kind. In your case, that “second job” would be remedial English classes.

  181. McWars says:

And please, can you wingnuts knock off the “second job” talking point? The last time we checked, there’s a despicable tax break on the books for companies that send first jobs overseas.

  184. osage says:

    REPUBLICANS TORPEDOING AMERICA

Republicans are practicing seditious DEMAGOGUERY and insurrectionary OBSTRUCTIONISM intended to destabilize our economy for purposes of political exploitation.

Republicans AREN’T making a sincere effort to STOP the bleeding THEIR incompetent leadership and failed policies created. Instead, they’re using conflicting economic theories as a smokescreen to conceal their subversive agenda, which is to cause President Obama and America to fail so they can blame Democrats for the consequences of THEIR calamitous mismanagement.

Republicans are preposterously professing that THEIR disgraceful political WHORING had nothing to do with the banking, real estate, stock market and employment catastrophes that resulted.

Republicans are trying to hamstring Democrats to prevent them from undoing the damage caused by a Republican presidency.

Republicans are offering controversial arguments they know no one can agree on to disrupt and prevent progressive change. They’d rather divide America and create political gridlock than endure the political consequences of effective Democratic governance. That’s how they gained power and that’s how they’re trying to retain it.

Republicans are not the LOYAL OPPOSITION. They are the ENEMY WITHIN whose personal priorities have eroded their moral and ethical standards to the point that treachery and betrayal are their preferred modus operandi.

It’s one thing to advocate their conservative beliefs; it’s another thing entirely to willfully sabotage America’s government because a successful Democratic presidency would not be vulnerable to the fears and hatreds that have produced and sustained the radical Republican corporatism and extremism that have poisoned and crippled America.

I hope those people in my former home state remember this bit of hypocritical theater and lying come vote time. Missouri is an ultra conservative state. I hope it’s people are not stupid too. Although Ashcroft was from there. I am still doing a mea culpa for that.

  196. jverner says:

Tundra, members of Congress can’t decide whether to accept the bailout bill. That’s up to the governments of their respective states. And it’s one more reason that these representatives’ statements are so cynical and hypocritical: They are in the best of all possible worlds. They have no responsibility for whether the bill succeeds. At the same time, they “brought home the bacon” for their constituents.
